Diner Reviews
  • "Fantastic evening. The Lamb cut was overpriced, but great. We loved it and will be back."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed our brunch with it's diverse options. Fresh food, amazing meat, and interestingly some of the best donuts I've ever tasted. Certainly worth your time. On top of all that we had wonderful service who showed us the true hospitality of Canada."

  • "Amazing food, inventive dishes - be prepared for the luxuries (fois gras, bone marrow butter, the most flavorful cuts of meat, etc.). Love the open kitchen (its about as open as any kitchen I've ever seen). Servers were very nice, knowledgeable, and attentive. Certainly pricey, but you should know that going in. Loved the ambiance. Left completely happy and stuffed."

  • "I felt that everyone in the restaurant really cared about the philosophy of the place, which is humanely raised, local product that is cooked seasonally, well and all the details matter. We brought guests from Norway and we were proud to showcase beautiful BC food by bringing them to this restaurant."

  • "My friend recommended this restaurant to me and I went with a few High School friends. I was pleased with the service, ambience, and the food quality. My only drawback was that the restaurant was a little bit difficult to find and the location was in an undesirable area. Other than that, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good place to dine in Vancouver."

  • "I would certainly not recommend this restaurant. The food is mediocre at best. While it may have been a good restaurant when it first opened, it does not live up to the hype these days. In fact, with so many good restaurants in close proximity I am surprised it is still open. Wildebeest has to be my most disappointing dining experience of the year. Two thumbs down. The ambiance and service are good. The food is not."

  • "We have dined here a few times now and everytime it is excellent. Service and food. It is definitely a meat lovers restaurant but most people could find something on the menu, even a vegetarian. Great salads."

  • "Thought we would check this place out after a hockey game, It's very close to the arena and I read some decent reviews here, looked at the menu looking quite forward to a new and exciting meal. We ordered the pork rinds - coated the mouth and too salty with too much smoke. The bone marrow butter- too salty and smoky. The oysters - needed an acid not whiskey and on a bed of ice, (they used salt). which made the oyster inedible. Wildebeest salad - decent but not spectacular could have used some micro greens or something fresh. The duck breast and hearts - too salty and breast not sliced on bias and too rare. The short ribs- salty and not anything special. Service was good but food could not have this for a return or recommendation."

  • "Love the dinner. It was great services with surprises on every plate. It was a quite celebration for my wife's birthday, the waitress was awesome at explaining the menu and the specials. Ordered pick olive (not so great, cause I am not a olive person), pork rinds (great snack to start), Pork schez (a bit ordinary, because it was similar to Japanese fried pork chop but on the dry-side. However, the sauce was pretty good), poach egg with sunchoke (the egg was done to perfection, but the sunchoke was a little to starchy for me), quail (tender, juicy and delics), bone marrow butter and bread and last but not least the Beef short-rib (best short rib i had in ages. Tender, juicy, with just the right amount of marble and charted to perfection)."

  • "I love restaurants that serve their dishes family style or tapas style. Being able to try several dishes from this restaurant was great since everything on the menu sounded amazing. The food was delicious, the WildeBEET salad and veal croquettes were our favourite dishes. Definitely will be going back."

  • "The service here is absolutely top-notch. My friend and I were seated at the bar for brunch, but decided that it was too cold since it was right by the door. We wanted to tranfer to the tables at the back and so the staff told us that we would once a table becomes available. They didn't even bat an eyelid at our request. Our server Raffi was also super friendly and knowledgeable and helped recommend some dishes to us. Great food, great service, what more could you ask for?"

  • "Food was interesting & good. The restaurant was initially booked for a birthday celebration - but this was not mentioned to the restaurant. I had to cancel & at that time I mentioned that I would rebook as it was for a birthday. The restaurant remembered the celebration, although it was 1 week later that I rebooked & again, never mentioned the birthday. I was quite impressed."

  • "The service was wonderfully attentive. Remember to request a table with a view of the open kitchen. We found the menu a bit disjointed and confusing. There was no theme and some dishes came with vegetables while others did not. It was odd that the fresh sheet did not include prices. The trout with toasted buckwheat and roasted celeriac in buttermilk and whey was amazing - crispy and nutty! The short rib on the other hand that came barren was disappointing - the meat did not fall off the bone and we had trouble with gristle. Perhaps it was just an unfortunate portion that we got. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience that we may try again."

  • "Dinner at Wildebeest on Friday included exceptional service and a decadent meal -- with lots of meat. The small plates are meant for sharing, and the server we had did a perfect job of advising us exactly how much to order (for us, 4 dishes). Vegetable choices on the menu were limited -- a beet salad or a seasonal choice, in this case carrots and kale -- plus olives, deliciously smoked. The beet salad was tasty and fun, including frozen mascarpone. We moved on to duck rilletes and then short rib, both rich and delicious. Cocktails are creative, and you'll spend a lot of time trying to imagine what parts of the menu mean -- hay jus? As long as you're not a vegetarian, you can't go wrong."

  • "Wildebeest was delicious! Very creative menu items with a huge focus on flesh. We ate a ton of meaty treats, which were all highly satisfying to our mouths."

  • "I do believe that review title sums it up. The food was fantastic, the waitstaff was fantastic. The price point is mid range so I wouldn't go here all the time but for a special occasion or a real dining treat this place wins!! Fantastic!!"

  • "Some of the best food in Vancouver. Second time there for dinner and again, not disappointed except maybe with the shirt rib. Before booking there though: this is not a restaurant for a romantic dinner! It's loud and most tables are long communal tables. This is best for group of friends wanting to have an experience!"

  • "interesting head-to-tail menu and good atmosphere. Humboldt squid is a must !"

  • "Had the mushroom and goat cheese omlet for bruch. It was very good. I must congratulate the resturant for using wild bc mushrooms, unlike another restaurant that I went to in Vancouver that used canned mushrooms."

  • "Always a great place to go. Amazing food, perfectly cooked, and great service. You also have the option to buy a six pack for the kitchen, which is pretty great. The wine list is also fantastic, with the house wine being from Road 13."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "The food was great, however the restaurant is so noisy it makes it hard to even have a conversation with someone across the table. I would only recommend this restaurant for a small group (4 - 6) and definitely not for a romantic dinner for 2:-) The waitress was very pleasant and helpful. Food definitely best shared family-style so only go with friends you don't mind sharing plates of food with."

  • "I had been meaning to eat at Wildebeest since I moved to Vancouver, and I finally made a reservation... Services centre was very attentive, food was amazing, ambience is pretty killer. Some of the best food for very had in Vancouver, or even really... Hazelnuts was a good "pre-appetizer", bone marrow butter was good. Angus short rib is to die for: good seasoning, nice smokiness, jus is great. Dessert rounded out the meal perfectly, had the cheesecake and ice cream."

  • "We enjoyed our evening at Wildebeest very much. Very good Lake Breeze wine by the glass. All our selections were great, we chose a good variety. The last dish was a bit slow in arriving, not sure the one at a time serving style is completely desirable as one eats a whole plate of vegetables, then a whole dish of protein. Would suggest serving two dishes that complement each other together. Waiter was pretty much over the top in his enthusiasm for discussing each molecule of food, but amusing. Only complaint the extremely loud noise level, the restaurant was full and the cacophony of voices combined with the overly loud music made conversation difficult."

  • "Two couples went for dinner and all agreed it was probably our best restaurant experience in years. The food was all interesting, creative and delicious. I've had enough chicken and steak to last a lifetime - what fun to be ordering off a completely different menu! The serving team was fun, knowledgable and attentive (in just the right way). Highly recommended if you're ready for something different (and better) than all your other restaurant dinners."

  • "I mean that in the best possible sense. The eight of us were perfectly pleased with everything - veal neck croquettes, marrow, more marrow, mackerel, trout, duck hearts, pig parts, big cow somethings, goat tonsils, a couple last of species specials and more than a few flagons of wine - nothing that several more hours on the snow shoes this weekend won't cure… Enthusiastic service, lovely room, good grub, good grog. We're all merry."

  • "I saved what I thought would be the best for my last night in Vancouver and I was not disappointed. The quail terrine with the game spice mayonnaise and a side of spiced pork rinds should have been heavy but somehow the fat on fat on fat felt light and bright without forgetting to remind you about the decadence. The sweetbreads with almond butter, Walla Walla onions and sherry gastrique literally melted; the sweet components with the faint mineral finish was exactly right and the Tonka bean ice cream dessert capped of a great first visit to the area. Can't wait to go back and definitely take Thor's advice about bars to visit!"

  • "I didn't know what to expect coming here, having heard only that the food was great. I was pleasantly surprised to find a very interesting looking restaurant, unique in decor. The servers were all very upbeat and pleasant. The food was delicious, ESPECIALLY if you are a meat lover! Portions may be a little small by some standards, but they were well seasoned and well prepared. I did not leave feeling unfed. My only complaint would be about the amount of fat in one of the dishes - I don't remember which one, some kind of pork cubes, short ribs? - some pieces were downright unchewable as they were mostly fat. I've never liked discrete fat chunks in any of my food, but tastes differ here. Overall, very delicious and good atmosphere!"

  • "The server was helpful, polite and friendly. The food was really tasty especially the sea urchin! While I don't mind family style, I wasn't all that keen on "served as they come". We only had one or two dishes on the table at a time and had to wait between them. A basket of bread would have been nice to carry us between courses. Try it out - it's priced well."

  • "We had been here for dinner before and were rather impressed. The brunch was just as good and surprisingly quite reasonably priced. The best part is that you can make a reservation so no sunday morning lineups. They also have an amazing morning cocktail selection including Slurpee Negronis. You really can't go wrong."

  • "Food: Lamb tartare was excellent; the ribeye was horrid, the worse I've ever had; the ling cod was mediocre. Service was good; but my overall experience was poor. The food and ambience was definitely not worth the price. I wouldn't go back......"

  • "Overall a greatest and I can understand why this place is the way it is. Service team is absolutely amazing. Food world class short ribs and desserts amazing only concern I had was the bone marrow and bread it was so smokey you couldn't taste anything else. Sorry I couldn't give you a five as I really wanted to. I WILL be back though as this IS Van's best place to eat"

  • "No. The restaurant has beautiful decor, exposed brick, clean lines and lovely modern fixtures while managing to maintain a warm rustic look. However food and service were only average. Instead of letting the food speak for itself, it seemed to be trying a bit too hard. The sharing plates for large groups looked interesting, but we didn't know that they had to be ordered through the website ahead of time. My advice: stop in for a drink and appie before committing to dinner."

  • "lincod ~ too salty and a bit under cooked olive ~ not a great choice as appetizers wait for more than 30 mins for the desserts"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "The food was fine, but every dish lacked a little something. Some things were too salty, some were bland, and some were just unexciting and unbalanced. My husband and I ordered the Omakase menu, where you get a surprise assortment, something we've enjoyed at other restaurants, but it was far too much. We received two small plates, two medium plates, and three entrees - one more entree than we were expecting. One of the entrees was beef rib and was a massive mound of meat which was paired with the veggie special of sunchokes, but this was surprisingly followed by a large plate of two lamb loins. It was way too much food! We could only muster a couple of bites each. If you have a multi-course menu option you need much better portion control."

  • "The ambiance is solid, the service excellent and very friendly. Like the cocktail list and the execution. We had 6 dishes, 3 were good and 3 fairly mediocre. The portions size is fine for me, but way out of touch with the price. I don't need a huge portion of food, but I felt like the prices were really high for the quantity and level of food being presented. Stick to the straight forward meat dishes. Sun Chokes were so very dry. Ribs were good, but simple. Beet salad was really way way too sweet (dessert level sweet) - the frozen ricotta was a miss and once it melted it was liquid and kind of a mess. Schnitzel tasty and simple - a great match for a nice beer at the bar."

  • "I went to Wildebeest with my Wife a few nights ago. The food was good, definitely a creative menu which I love. Portion sizes were great too, just the right amount of food. Service was ordinary and drinks were well over priced. I enjoyed the experience because it was something different. However it's not my new favourite."

  • "Solid food with great execution of red meats but mediocre execution of seafood. Very poor, inattentive, cold (attitude), slow service. Overall overpriced for the quantity of food you get, which could be offset by better service, but all four of us were extremely underwhelmed by our server throughout the entire night. Would recommend the restaurant with some reservation."

  • "We had made a reservation for Brunch for 5 people and were seated promptly but the service was very lacking. We waited 45 minutes to get our first order of drinks and 5 more minutes after that to get our doughnuts. They set down plates of food that we did not order and left them for two minutes and then picked them back up to serve to another table.. Also, be aware that if you are in need of a juicy ceasar on a Saturday mid morning it is made of a gin base instead of vodka. They won't tell you that before you order it and its almost 11 dollars!!!! (below average)We were super hungry and had been sitting beside the fresh loaves of banana bread or something, an actually had to REQUEST to have a taste of this? its complimentary as well??"
