Diner Reviews
  • "Lunch food was great - excellent soup. Decent menu. would recommend more salads."

  • "These were the most uncomfortable chairs I have experienced. We have dined in hundreds of restaurants around the world. We are not heavy people at all, please replace those black chairs."

  • "The places was crowded and full of life. It was hard to hear the others at the table. The service was great. The fiood was tasty. My food came out cold, but they were very gracious and redid it. We were there for a birthday brunch and they brought out some ice cream and a candle as I had requested in the reservation. I was very grateful for that."

  • "Service was excellent, waiter was knowledgeable and friendly. We were running a little late due to traffic, phoned ahead, were informed. "Relax, no problem." Quickly seated upon arrival. Nice touch!"

  • "This is a lovely place, with great service, but the food was disappointing. The entrees consist of whatever the featured protein is- and basically nothing else. My husband scallops, and I ordered tofu. That's what we got. A plate of six or so scallops, and a plate of 10 chunks of tofu. No vegetables, no significant garnish. There was a pool of pureed something next to mine. For $28 in University City, I expected more."

  • "BUT has become a bit pricey compared to the White Dog I remember. STILL great food, local ingredients, but more upscale atmsophere"

  • "Met my children there and we were all coming from different states! One was late but the restaurant was very kind and patient. We never felt rushed, despite the fact that we were one of the last tables to leave. The food was amazing and we loved the many small dining rooms. I will go there again when I am next in Philly."

  • "The staff was absolutely wonderful! Our hostess was fantastic. She was courteous and went over the menu, explaining the ingredients. She was sympathetic to my issues with regard to spicy foods and even brought me a glass of milk to soothe my stomach. The food was fantastic! The lamb sliders were great! I loved the riggatoni, even though it was quite spicy. It had a lot of heat, which I was warned about, but I ordered it anyway, hence the milk. I would recommend it to my friends, and I will be coming back again. I want to try the burgers. My friend who has been to White Dog before says they are fantastic. I so appreciated the service we received. Our server/hostess was fantastic!"

  • "Brunch menu was unique and all locally grown. Bloodhound drink was the best Bloody Mary around! My favorite part was the ambiance and decorations. If you are a dog person you can't miss stopping in! Walking distant from the train station in Philly."

  • "I first ate at the White Dog Cafe almost 20 years ago, but this was my first time back in Philly in quite a while. I was hoping the restuarant was still as good as I remembered, but it was better. They recently redecorated and hired a new Chef, and the results are outstanding. Both long time customers and newbies will love the location, Ambience and food. The wait staff were very friendly, attentive and knowledgable. The Market menu (fixed price 4 courses) for $45 is a major bargain, and the wine pairing for an additional $15 is a nice bonus. Menu recommendations include the Mushroom Soup (out of this world), Fried Pickles (I know, but try them) and any of the seafood dishes. The cheese course is a nice way to start or end the meal."

  • "White Dog Cafe is always the perfect place to grab some reliably fresh and delicious food. We reserved a table online through OpenTable, but the wait would have been 15 minutes otherwise. Despite looking like a small place, the restaurant actually has a huge back and downstairs area. The service is always impeccable, food delicious, and wait time is next-to-none considering how many customers they cater too. A gem in the UCity area!"

  • "I found the luncheon - which was a bday luncheon very nice BUT the potions were miniscule, specially on the $19 charcuterie platter. $19 - come on!!! Way too much for so little. Otherwise, lunch was good."

  • "Probably the best restaurant I've ever eaten at. Terrific food, wonderful service, admirable farm to table goals. We can't say enough good things about this restaurant."

  • "Good food and service but uneven room temperature left us hot and cold."

  • "This was a complete find. All local meats and produce from local farms. Good was awesome and atmosphere outstanding."

  • "We tried the prix fixe menu and every course was very good. My wife enjoyed all of the chef's wine pairings with each course and I had the beer pairings, which were all well chosen. The service was good in spite of a packed house. Overall a great experience."

  • "We were visiting colleges in Philadelphia and had Sunday brunch here. Great food, mimosas and atmosphere. Despite a packed house, we experienced great service. A popular place, and well deserved!"

  • "Had brunch there on Sun. Service was so-so--only had coffee refilled once. Time it took for food to be served seemed lengthy for this time of the day, but it did seem as thought out server was busy. Maybe short-staffed? Otherwise, ambiance is so cute--love the eclectic look, food tasty, and location is relatively easy to get to. Will return & hope service is a bit more on the mark!"

  • "We always come here for brunch. We do not go anywhere else. Best bottomless option by far, food is always amazing, service is fantastic, and the neighborhood is great. Parking is never a big deal and I always leave happy! Always bringing a new group of friends here."
    Dined on 3/30/2014
  • "Have eaten here 4 times and never disappointed. Although we did have to wait this time 20 minutes even though we had a reservation, it was not the restaurant's fault. The people who were sitting at our table would not leave. The hostess made a special point of asking if it would be possible for us to sit in a very large booth or would it be too crowded. The booth was absolutely perfect as was the meal and the service."

  • "Food was delightful and the service and ambience was excellent. Highly recommend!"

  • "Every time I come the wait staff is really good. I felt like the total dinning experience was perfect and it was just a Friday lunch. Food was prepared perfectly and the wait staff was very attentive. I will continue to suggest White Dog to people who ask about a great place to go while in University City."

  • "This is an unpretentious restaurant with food that is better than one would expect. Actually, that's unfair. This is a good restaurant period. The servers are knowledgeable and unobtrusive. The bartenders know how to mix a perfect manhattan and are friendly. And if you are looking for a place to take to take your Penn kid for dinner, you should all be happy."
    Dined on 3/24/2014
  • "White Dog is always a reliably good dining experience. I especially recommend for we students whose parents are visiting. The service is great and the food is delicious. Finally the quirky decor really makes it stand out."
    Dined on 3/23/2014
  • "Loved the new decor in the the room where we were seated for brunch ... Enjoyed the omelette, bottomless sangria and triple chocolate mousse cake! Having moved out of the area, we had not visited for quite a while but it was better than ever! Combined with a tour of the Barnes ... Perfect!"

  • "We had a lovely Saturday lunch in one of the tiny, quaint dining rooms. The menu was interesting, the food was good, the service was outstanding, and the decor set a charming, intimate mood. The location is great for anything in University City and Sansom Street itself is a step back in time. I will definitely return."

  • "We were looking for a spot close to Penn and Drexel to meet long time friends visiting colleges with their daughter. The restaurant came highly recommended by two Philadelphia-educated physicians and they were right on the mark. It was fun, friendly and the food was good. Even with a 7p reservation, they allowed us to linger and catch up."

  • "White Dog is a staple for us. Whenever family is visiting its a perfect place that is reasonably priced with great food and something on the menu for everyone. We always love it here."

  • "I've been dining at the White Dog since it was founded 1983, and I suffered through the year or so of dreary confusion after Judy Wicks sold it to restaurant mogul Marty Grims. I took a party of 9 there for dinner following a lecture at Penn. The food was very good, as is once again the norm. To drink, I asked our waiter, with a smile, for the house red, saying that, for a group of this size it would need to be cheap. We enjoyed 4 bottles of the La Loach Cabernet. It was very nice. And well it should have been, because when the bill was presented I learned it had cost $50 per bottle! A complaint to the restaurant a few days later came to naught. That's what house wine costs in Philadelphia, they said. Not so, of course."

  • "I have dined at White Dog a number of times and was so pleased to see during my recent visit that they are revamping the entire place. While it's not quite yet finished, what has been completed thus far is very appealing. My partner and I both had the usual turkey cobb salad. The heat in the honey mustard salad dressing cleared our sinuses to the point that we both looked like we were crying. The waitress cheerfully offered to bring us new salads. Since it was only the dressing that needed fixing, we suggested a little more honey and that seemed to do the trick. Despite the average food experience during this visit, I will be back."

  • "The garlic potatoe soup was the best. Not over powering but a great smooth taste. The beet salmon flatbread was the best flatbread ever. After this any other flatbread will come out flat tasting. The lamb rigatoni was not as great and too spicy but probably should save that kind of dish for dining in an Italian restaurant . Excellent service and waitress recommended an apple turnover for dessert and we were glad she did"

  • "Eclectic groups of diners, from young families to couples to larger groups. Pictures and paintings of dogs are everywhere. Good food, delivered quickly despite crowded Saturday night. Friendly and attentive bar and wait staff. Only drawback was that bottle of dinner wine (red) was chilled."

  • "We were in Philly for my wife's birthday weekend (really it was the whole week!). We wanted nice place for Saturday evening dinner and we certainly found it. Food, service, and ambiance was truly great. We had a memorable meal. Great little neighborhood find in and around the Philly Universities. We had a drink at the bar first and it was very nice. We would go back next week."

  • "This place is great! I went here with a group of my friends for my best friend's birthday. After telling the restaurant before hand that it was her birthday they had a card waiting for her. We all ordered bottomless brunch and the drinks came quickly and weren't watered down. Our waiter was Casey, he was very attentive and never made us feel rushed to leave. The food was delicious and the portions were huge. We will most definitely be returning!!"

  • "This popular restaurant is worth making a reservation for it's more popular than one may see to think. As I waited for my guest to arrive at least 50 people waited in line in a 10 minute period to get a table or seat at the bar. Once my guest arrived, we were swiftly taken to a fine table in a small room. The waitstaff is friendly and efficient and our dishes came on a timely basis. Fine salads and sandwiches. Will return again and again"

  • "I had been to the White Dog Cafe one other time and it was really great so I took a friend for lunch. It was crazy loud where we were seated and it was hard to her our conversation. My order was not done properly, but was quickly fixed. I had the Turkey Cobb Salad. That was great. The food makes this place a hit but there are some negatives."

  • "I have a 50 character minimum for this comment. It doesn't matter, the place is good; "worth it" in enough ways."
