Recently revisited another of my top 5's and was disappointed so I was prepared to have my hopes dashed again. However, it was not to be as the elegant food and atmosphere of the White Barn more than measured up to my memories. I hope the management never surrenders their "jackets for gentlemen" policy because, in this day and age of jeans acceptable everywhere, it is nice to dress up for dinner once in awhile, even if forced to, as it adds to the specialness of the evening. Anyway the food was amazing, the service impeccable and the setting sublime. The variation of local oysters appetizer is just one of the creative, exquisite delights we experienced on a weekday night, but it is at the very top of my all time dishes, and visually it was spectacular. Each of the three variations on different themes was served in an oyster shell perched atop its own little pillar of salt; the fourth oyster contained a serving of horseradish ice cream, another delicate combination of flavors to complement the other three. The four courses ordered were interspersed with additional amuse bouches to expand this sensually luscious evening, all enhanced further by superb wait staff and pianist. The food was delicious as usual, and the presentation was appealing. The menu is diverse and worth spending some time over before choosing. We have eaten at multiple Relais & Chateaux in Europe and the US and Michelin-starred establishments but Grand Chef Jonathan Cartwright demonstrates masterfully that a truly memorable restaurant experiemce isn't just about great food (which the White Barn has), or a great sommelier (which it also has) but a perfect combination of attentive, thoughtful, knowledgeable and friendly service combined with cuisine that is perfectly balanced, creative yet comforting, and served with genuine warmth and generosity. A true definition of hospitality.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWhen my husband and I firstWhen my husband and I first arrived at the White Barn Inn, we were greeted by a valet, a doorman wearing a white jacket with coattails and white gloves, and the maitre'd. My first thought was, 'Great, another hoity-toity restaurant with a too high opinion of themselves and food that will surely disappoint'. As we were seated, it quickly became apparent that this was obviously not true. We opted for the pre fixe menu, which included bonus amuse bouche and mignardise courses. The service was gracious and not at all overbearing. The food was nothing short of an otherworldly experience. There were some eye-closing 'Mmmmmm' moments, as well as in my chair yummy dances. Consistently good quality of food and impeccable service. The food was prepared perfectly and presentation was excellent.
