Diner Reviews
  • "Whispers is a small gem in a lovely hotel setting. It has it's own entrance and easy parking. The entire staff was wonderful. The food service was top notch and the food was inventive and great. We had a wonderful time and would go back in a heart beat. It is the rare restaurant that does not serve alcohol but allows you to bring your own wine and they happily serve it at your table. The atmosphere is welcoming with just the right level of noise. Thanks Whispers for such a lovely evening."

  • "After a while, you get tired of boardwalk food and shellfish bars. Whispers provides a lovely setting in an old inn. The menu is relatively small but is compensated by superb dishes and diversity: soft-shell crab, rack of lamb, steak. They have some New Jersey wine, but you're well advised to bring your own, not unusual at shore restaurants. They spread their seating so that the service is very attentive, and management does everything possible to respond to requests and make you comfortable. I'd like to see more of a uniform dress code (everything now from jackets to shorts and loud shirts, dresses to casual jeans). Parking can be difficult, meaning a couple of blocks of walking. But Whispers is well worth the effort and is a gem."

  • "Whispers is very small and they have the maximum number of table settings that they could possibly have in their main dining room; so it is very cramped and very noisy. It appeared to us that Whispers was a staple for the senior local residents. The wait staff is good but not great. My wife's place setting was short a fork; she requested some ice and the waiter forgot. We did not take advantage of their BYOB option and should have; we purchased a bottle of a New Jersey Pinot Grigio which was just okay. The entres that we ordered were good but no WOW factors. I was looking for a special place for our special date and Whispers turnout to not be that place."

  • "My wife and I have eaten here a number of times and have always enjoyed our experience. The meal we had the other night was even more exceptional than usual. We'll keep coming back when we're in Spring Lake."

  • "A very fine restaurant enjoyed last weekend! Rarely do my husband and I dine in New Jersey where we a) love all the offerings on the menu and b) love everything from appetizer to dessert. I started with the lobster crepe which was overflowing with lobster (absolutely delicious), my husband had the special scallop appetizer (equally enjoyed) then we each had a salad. Mine the special baby kale with watermelon (I could eat this every day for the rest of my life!), his the baby arugula; excellent. Main course: I had the sushi grade tuna (I believe was a special offering?) and my husband had the Chilean Sea Bass. Both incredible! Dessert-flourless chocolate cake and blueberry plum crumble!! Everyone we know will hear about Whispers!!"

  • "Great food in a wonderful setting. BYOB so you can bring your favorite wine or pick one from the winery they have an association with."

  • "I will say that the food was incredible. However their wine list as very disappointing and only had wines by the bottle and from one nj winery. I suggest you do the permitted BYOB!"

  • "When you are up for fine dining and NYC level service, almost, then Whispers is the place. Fine china and white linen tablecloths, you'll feel transported to an earlier simpler erra. Leave the smartphone at home and think about the shore of the past. And the food is excellent. Pastry chef also out did him or herself."

  • "Went for date night. Quiet inside although the ambience is a little dated. I was happy with their NJ wine selection. Food was SO on point (except we both thought the burr blanc sauce was super salty). I'm still dreaming about the cookie dough cake dessert and the ahi spec! Our server definitely opened our bottle of wine ON the table and didn't allow either of us to taste it first, but he said he was new so it was forgivable. Firing of courses was great- we weren't rushed and we weren't waiting too long, either. I asked for a latte but was informed that they push a button on a machine (as opposed to using a true capp machine), so no foam wasn't an option; however, it still tasted yummy, so I got over that, too. All in all, a gem of a find :)"

  • "We had the lazy lobster which was superb. It was $45.00 but we are from NY so that was cheap. Highly recommend. We also had the halibut and that was great. We brought our own wine which was nice. The waiter was friendly and helpful. Two thumbs up!"

  • "I was very disappointed in our recent visit to Whispers. I recall a more elegant dining experience, which this was not. Flip flops, shorts etc We were looking for an elegant date night experience. The service was very slow, one server rushing around perspiring my salad was not brought with my husband's so I said forget it. In this area and in the past they did require at least jackets for men. Way tooooocasual. I realize this is the Jersey Shore, but where is the fine dining?"

  • "The menu had a lot of fish choices(I am not complaining about that) but none of them appealed to me. They did have a lobster special which was fantastic. They also give a lot of food. We will def be back!"

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary at Whispers this past Saturday evening. The service was spectacular and the food was superb! It's a little on the pricey side but well worth it. Highly recommend dining here just book early it fills up quickly especially on the weekends."

  • "We have been to Whispers several times but this was a major disappointment. We had a reservation close to 8 and we were seated very promptly - perhaps 5 to 10 minutes after our reservation time. However, something must have been wrong in the kitchen for it was beyond slow and the presentation of the food sloppy. It took close to 30 minutes for the appetizers to come out after ordering. They all tasted very good but literally looked as if the food was quickly tossed onto the plates; a bit sloppy. It then took over 45 minutes for our dinner to come out. We were told the dinner was being plated and it still took another 20 minutes. So the food was overcooked, dry and again poorly presented. For >$230 for 3 people that is inexcusable. "

  • "The special appetizer treat from the chef was a nice touch. Same with the freshly baked roll. Candlelit table was romantic, but there were some loud guests whose conversation took over the whole room. Food was very good. There were quite a few specials which all sounded delicious."

  • "The best part of the evening was the dessert course - ultimate cookie cake and apple cobbler. Both were delicious! The crab cake first course and the lobster crab soup were good as well. Aside from these four items we were underwhelmed by our dinner. The tuna tartare was served too warm and the cut of the tuna made it chewy. The lobster crepes were bland, the cinnamon addition to the tomato on top of the swordfish overpowered the other flavors, and the cous cous served with the lamb was overcooked and the lamb itself had an odd flavor. It is unlikely that we will return."

  • "This was my third time dining on Mother's Day. Reservations are honored with absolute precision--never a wait. The food and service are excellent. Not inexpensive but a good value. A new feature is that they now serve NJ wine. The Old York Road winery Malbec we ordered was surprisingly good!"

  • "Saturday evening was our 2nd time at Whispers. Spending a special weekend at the Jersey Shore called for a special dinner - and that is what we had. The smaller room we ate in this time was just lovely - a bit less noisy and intimate. Our waitress, Ellen, was outstanding. She certainly added to our experience. The dinner options were varied, especially for this picky eater. My halibut was cooked to perfection. The lobster sauce, delicious, but the sauce a bit too rich and the swordfish (a chef's favorite) wonderful - none were disappointed. My dessert, with a candle!, was the best ever - chocolate graham cracker gelato! worth the trip just for dessert!! "

  • "We reviewed the menu online and made the restaurant selection based on menu, price and location. When we arrived, we found they had a special menu for Easter at one set price $75 pp + 20% gratuity + tax This was a big disappointment because we would have selected another restaurant if we knew it was at this price point. The food was good - we had to return the salmon because it wasn't fully cooked - definitely not worth the price they were charging. All-in-all, found the place a little stuffy for my tastes and I definitely prefer to dial in the gratuity based on service - not be told this is what you will tip for a party of 2. Will not go back."

  • "The restaurant was quiet and intimate. The food was very good and the chef accommodated my wife's dietary restrictions. The service was excellent. Although Whispers is limited to serving New Jersey wines and many of the patrons brought their own bottles with them, the wine we ordered, a dry white from Southern New Jersey, was a fine accompaniment to our meals."

  • "Really nice place and great food for a dressy casual dinner out. Service is very good. Food is well prepared and fresh. There are not a lot if places like this in the area so it is a gem. And BYOB is a plus and they are very attentive with that."

  • "Whispers is a beautifully appointed, well run dining venue located in a B & B across from the town lake. The wait staff is friendly, professional and accommodating . The menu is impressive but not too lengthy. There were a couple of specials in addition to the regular menu. It is BYOB but they have an arrangement with a local NJ winery to sell their wines by the bottle only to complement menu offerings. Otherwise, patrons are able to bring their own wine, beer, or cocktails. In the summer, there is a sushi chef on staff which creates another layer of offerings. We usually order some as an appetizer. There are 2 dining rooms, both beautifully appointed. The main dining room has all the windows and is overall brighter."
