  • "This was our first time to San Diego and had researched places to eat as we are definite foodies. Whisknladle was at the top of our list and it did not disappoint! Once we arrived, everyone we spoke with happily made recommendations on their favorite menu item. Once we decided on several items to share the server was able to bring those items in the perfect order. The ravioli was to die for, I waned to pick up the bowl to drink the broth. The hamachi was flavorful and super-fresh and the bone marrow was one of the best things I have ever eaten. Our 16 year old picky son had the tagliatelle and wolfed it down. Overall one of the best dining experiences and by far the best in San Diego!"

We were gonna go to Mimi's in Mira Mesa after church, but wanted to try something different. Glad we went. It was something new & interesting. Lots of local choices!"

  • "I had dinner at this place on 4/11/14 with a party of four (about $250 w/tip). I had been there before so I knew the food was good. I also know they marinate the olives themselves and they are good. I asked the waiter for some but he said I could only get them at the bar. No problem I thought I went to the bar and ordered some carried them to my table only to have him return telling me " I'm sorry we cannot allow them in the dinning room" (" dinning room" is a very loose term for what is actually a covered patio, are you kidding me? ) He took the olives from me and carried them off.I should have gotten up and gone next door to Karl Straus, anyway the food is good the hospitality is bad and the pretentiousness is off the chart"

  • "I love that every time I come the menu is different and the food is prepared perfectly. I just tried brunch here for the first time and the blueberry french toast was amazing, and the eggs benedict was the best I've ever had. Everything is made in house, even the english muffins, and they use high quality ingredients. I also tried the smoked pork hash, pancakes, and quiche, which were all very tasty. From the self service coffee and pastry table, I had the banana toffee muffin with dulce de leche sauce and it was incredible. Service was great and atmosphere is enjoyable. I've been here for dinner several times and they have been wonderful as well."

  • "Living in La Jolla means having friends visiting often. Since we first had our dinner at Whisknladle I have never hesitated bringing friends there. The chef is incredible. My wife and I now have our favorites - porkchop for me and sea bass for her, split a vacherin for dessert. Of course we deviate from our favorites regularly and everything is consistently outstanding. Service is impeccable."

  • "Normally this would place would be pretty pricey for me as a graduate student, but since dinner was on my in-laws we had a great time. We had the flatbread and cured meats and cheese platter for appetizers. The house-made olives were the best I've ever had. All our entrees were good--we ordered the sea bass with pozole broth, the lamb culotte, the yellowtail crudo, and the special that night which was a pea and carrot ravioli. My sea bass dish was excellent and the greens and radish complemented the fish very well. The kitchen even gave us complimentary peanut butter ice cream vacherine since it was my partner's birthday--what a nice surprise and a delicious treat! The waitstaff was great--very attentive and super nice."

  • "Every dish was amazingly constructed, with flavor combinations and ways of preparing that I hadn't ever thought of. However, there is a relatively long wait once you order your food and inbetween courses. The menu is set up such that as you move down the menu, the portion sizes get larger (moving from appetizer to entrée). I say this because it is presented without sections or demarcations. The portion sizes are what you would expect from a restaurant of this caliber and type, so adjust your expectations. That being said, we left decidedly full and happy. As odd as it sounds, get the chicken. It was the best chicken I've ever had."

  • "I enjoyed the atmosphere and great service here, but the food was a little below the standards I expected from all the hype and for the price. I had a lamb entree that was about $34 but was really just mediocre. It should have blown me away. The house salad was delicious as was the wine and service. Overall I enjoyed it but I think they could amp up the food quality and preparation of the entrees."

  • "We had reservations for 7:30 pm on a Monday and the restaurant was busy. The outside covered outdoor seating area was pleasant and not too loud, even with the crowd. Our service was attentive and friendly throughout the evening. Caesar salad: fresh Romaine with a traditional bright, clean Caesar dressing. Flat bread pizza: good collection of fresh vegetables and a sunny side up fried egg. Entrées: I had the seared ahi - a nice portion, well seared, subtly seasoned, with some baby potatoes, beets & avocado: my friends both had the burger - cooked exactly as requested (medium), topped with a fried egg, served with shoestring fries. In short: fresh farm ingredients, subtly seasoned preparations that let the ingredients be the star."

  • "We began our week-long gustatory explorations in LaJolla and decided to end there as well. Whisknladle came recommended in the Moon Guide and the farm-to-table menu sounded appealing. We found the food first-rate and the service friendly and responsive. It was a little noisier and more crowded than I expected, but it was "energetic" and festive, not unpleasant. I'd probably be a frequent diner here if we lived in the area - just one more reason to want to live in San Diego!"

  • "Started at happy hour - tapas were a great deal - the scallop crudo was divine and the crafted drinks were incredible. Nothing like a Nigroni done well, our friends were drinking something with roasted blood orange that they loved. We then went to our table - the burrata was just okay but still good. The Grouper was delicious, came with some maza and perfectly cooked. The lamb was incredible - the table shared and all agreed some of the best we had ever had. Super relaxed vibe but they still fold your napkin every time you get up - little details that make a difference in service. Peanut butter fudge thing and Rhubarb crisp for dessert perfect end to a perfect meal. Love the option to thank the chefs with a round of beer which we did!"

  • "We had a table of 5 . Originally it was 6 but one cancelled. When I got there early the host seated me right away at a corner booth and sent the waiter over . He was very good and was apparently training another wait person who also was great. Most of us ordered the 1/2 lunch. Mine was with the chicken; outstanding. Others had the shrimp sandwich. My wife had the Caesar salad which she said was outstanding. The Puree of Parsnip soup was a big hit. The only negative was one of the party ordered the fish tacos and didn't say anything until later that the fish was under cooked and cold. I'd go back it was enjoyable."

  • "While vacationing in San Diego we planned for a special dinner out. We were lucky enough to get a reservation at WhisknLadle. It is located in the heart of La Jolla and is a wonderful space with an open front which was perfect for a warm spring evening. The space itself is hip, but welcoming. We were seated immediately, and offered cocketails. The bar does a number of inventive craft cocktails and also has a wonderful wine list. Our waiter was knowledgeable, attentive despite also working a large group, and extremely patient. The food itself was wonderful, very creative. This restaurant is known for being farm to table and it didn't disappoint in the freshness of the food."

  • "The restaurant has a European feel to it without any air of pretentiousness. The atmosphere was youthful and energetic. The food was amazing with a range of portion sizes and prices available. I had a wonderful pork chop dish with an unusual crème-fraiche mustard sauce that added a bit of zip to the dish, whereas my friend thoroughly enjoyed the stuffed quail offering based on his comments and the pile of denuded bones on his plate. I would highly recommend the desserts, in particular I enjoyed the chocolate torte with a very tasty beet ice cream. The service is quite good with the staff being very informed not only about their specific dishes, but about food in general. The staff was delightfully engaging without being intrusive."

  • "Food was truly excellent. Coffee is self serve (ok - but...). Front people were very friendly and accommodating - great start. Our waitress, Kim was an absolute gem. The food was overall excellent - the hash browns were cold - everything else was terrific.. Portions are not large (which is ok) - might not be great if you are looking for a place to "go large" - all in all a terrific place to spend the morning. I think PKLJ is better for brunch - but love WnL for lunch / dinner."
