Diner Reviews
  • "We had a remarkable dinner at WiskNLadle a few nights ago. My husband and I shared a salad to start, the parmesan was delicate and strong at the same time which was perfect with lots of ground pepper and greens. For dinner we shared the wild salmon that crimped our conversation as we were both quite distracted by the very perfectly prepared fish. Wild salmon is always at the top of our list, but this was extraordinary, with a gentle crust. For desert we shared a scoop of lemon sorbet, it was not too sweet, a perfect balance for ending the meal. I had a signature gin drink, but wished I would have gone with a dry Chardonnay instead, it would have paired perfectly with the entire meal."

  • "I couldn't be happier with Whisknladle! Not only incredible the food, but we had the most amazing service. That makes all the difference in the world. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "This is the best of prep kitchen restaurant group. Best food. Best menu. Best ambiance. But by far the most expensive!"

  • "have been here a few times and am always delighted by the new menu items and fresh, flavorful food. the service is wonderful. also, a unique drink list. great spot with great food!"

  • "Always a good experience when I dine at WhiskNLadle. It is a great atmosphere, the food is fresh and flavors are good. I like to go there for working lunch meetings... but I also enjoy the small bar with friends at night."

  • "Made reservation to celebrate my wife's birthday, & we really enjoyed the evening. Very Special Night."

  • "We ate here in a large group with kids. They were accommodating to the kids' needs but don't have a formal kids menu. The cocktails were unique & flavorful. We ordered the buratta and bone marrow for appetizers, both of which were delicious. Unfortunately the appetizers were the best part of the meal. The entrees lacked much flavor beyond being very salty. The pork was plated raw and when it was returned to be cooked more, we were told that was their idea of medium preparation. We opted to skip dessert after our entree disappointment. We sat out on the patio which offered a very nice ambience for our group. The wait staff was very attentive. But we just didn't think that the meal was worth it for the price. Maybe that's La Jolla!"

  • "A treasure on every level. Lovely decor, w/ a semi-outdoor front dining area along the sidewalk, and a somewhat more secluded dining area in the rear. Beautiful California casual, but elegant. Top-notch service and amazingly flavorful and artfully prepared and presented cuisine. A memorable experience."

  • "fried chicken sandwich, I really shouldn't have to say anything else. the burrata was also amazing, but the fried chicken sandwich stole the show. hands down best sandwich I have ever had."

  • "The concepts were generally fine, but the execution just wasn't there. The waitstaff was amiable enough and professional, but slow to make it to our table. The flavor profile on the appetizer was good, but there were two toothpick shards hidden amongst the diced tomatoes (fairly dangerous in low light). Bread plates were not changed, making it difficult to eat the particular appetizers that we ordered. The scallops would have been fine, but were way too salty (the salt overwhelmed the corn puree). No complaints about the dessert, the berry pudding was excellent, but the coffee was cold. Maybe we caught them on a bad night, and I would definitely overlook the problems at a less expensive restaurant. But we won't be returning anytime soon."

  • "The ingredients are of good quality. The service is spotty. Their portions have been dramatically down sized. A $15.00 salad, with a quarter of a peach ? I'm not a glutton mind you, but at this price point, I shouldn't have to run over to Bijou for a cheese plate afterwards, in order attain some degree of satiation."

  • "This was out first visit to Whisknladle & they did not disappoint. Very friendly staff & entree's out of this world. Props to the Chef. Scallop entree was perfect with chino corn, bacon, mushrooms & perfectly cook scallops. Thank You for a Great Evening!"

  • "not a factory restaurant. the focus is on ingredients. mostly local and fresh. unstilted service. it has become my go-to place in la jolla, beating out my old favorite, barbarella"

  • "Had dinner here several times (and lunch numerous times) and yet to have any problems or a bad meal."

  • "Every time I've been in, I've found something new that keeps me coming back again. Recently I tried the mussels, the waitress described the sauce as "so good you could drink it straight" and she was right! If you like to try new drinks, they have a good variety of signature cocktails to choose from. I get "London's Burning" with tequila rather than gin, it's spicy, but delicious! Go to WNL for good food, good drinks and to enjoy an evening on their patio! Only problem is the price, drinks, apps & entree can run up the bill... But every time I leave I'm not disappointed, instead I'm talking about what I'm going to try when I come back!"

  • "We had a GREAT dinner at Whisknladle Sunday evening! Everything was delicious! Try the bone marrow & cheese with greens & peaches! Both soooo yummy! The homemade pasta entree was fabulous; the steak terrific and the pork chop soooooo great! Its been quite a while since we had been to Whisknladle but we will certainly return much more often now! Great waitress too! Very knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely a place to put on your radar if you are a foodie!"

  • "We went to Whisknladle with group of 12 for a Saturday brunch after a morning swim at the Cove & the experience could not have been more perfect. From the menu offering both breakfast items & sandwiches to the spot on service. Everyone in the restaurant made the day memorable. Thank You!!!"

  • "The food was fantastic and the service was great. We made the reservation based on Yelp reviews and we would definitely recommend this restaruant."

  • "What appeared to be an upscale restaurant with a unique menu turned out to be a high end Chucky Cheese with an eclectic collection of simply odd tasting food and drink items. Everything served looked amazing but not even the waiters suggestions of a bone marrow appetizer for two or the scallops entree passed as good. Just as the unique description of each of the 7 menu items we ordered turned out to be odd, so did the restaurant itself. The place was filled with children scurrying about perhaps drawn by the hamburger we didn't order but described by the waiter as amazing. Overall for a dinner for two at $200 the food and drink should be more than good looking and the eatery itself shouldn't confuse fine dining with children's offerings."

  • "I've been here a couple of times and have had better meals so I hope that this was just a one off experience. They change their menu every day and the amount of choices was very limited yesterday. The gazpacho was bland and the flatbread was weighed down with heavy toppings like sausage. The restaurant was half fill yet it took over 20 minutes to get our food. So I'm not rushing back anytime soon but would be willing to go back as long as I could see the menu beforehand."

  • "This spot was super. The food was outstanding. Everything was done perfectly, and inventively! The classic dishes were done to a T. The bone marrow was perfect, the gazpacho was inventive, the tagliatelle boars sausage was amazingly flavorful and well balanced. The cocktails were superb, and the wine was well ranged and all tasty selections. The service was equally matched. She was present and chatty the right amount, and read all of her tables well. Overall this dining experience was perfect! Everyone should put this on the top lost of restaurants to try!"

  • "Great place for brunch. Food was excellent. We had the gazpacho which was one of the best I have ever had. Refreshing and light. The Benedict and goat cheese omelette were excellent. The service was a little slow. Specialty cocktails were great."

  • "We were visiting La Jolla on vacation and decided to try Whisknladle. This was our first time dining here and we absolutely loved it! We shared the cutting board and summer salad for appetizers and they were wonderful. I ordered the scallops as my main course and I can honestly say they might have been the best I've ever had! My husband and son's entrees (roast chicken and ahi tuna) were equally remarkable! The service was fantastic--extremely friendly. It made for a very memorable first evening of vacation! We live in New York City and have eaten in some of the best restaurants it has to offer and Whisknladle was right up there! Highly recommend...."

  • "We love, love, love Whisknladle - and have for years. They're fit for foodies, but there's no ego or pretentiousness. Everybody there is genuinely excited to share their love for food, we've never had a bad dish or a bad experience. The advice of the servers on the special items, or interesting finds are always worth taking note of. Two things to not miss are their craft cocktails & any of their house smoked meats."

  • "I made an open table reservation the same day, I mentioned the special occasion in my reservation. The hostess, the manager, the wait staff and the kitchen all made such a big deal out of our visit. It was fantastic service, the food was really delicious and the meal was timed perfectly. No rush, just an excellent dining experience."

  • "While the setting was fun and service pretty good, the dishes we ordered turned out to be very salty and quite rich. Not the clean, light fare we've come to expect in California."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "This is a very pretty restaurant with some of the most fantastic, attentive service we've experienced. All of the ingredients are extremely fresh and very high quality. They just don't "come together" as they should. A watercress/peach/balsalmic salad that should be bursting with flavor is almost tasteless. A beautiful pork chop is so salty that you can barely eat it. A pasta ragu that lacks any "zip" and is buried in Parmesan, making it just so-so and not outstanding. I have not attended culinary school, but if I can determine what each dish is lacking, then the chef should be able to as well. We really wanted this place to be as good as it looks, but it doesn't quite hit the mark."

  • "Came here on a bustling brunch day, the food was tasty and satisfying. There was a cute table with fresh pastries and coffee to serve yourself while you wait which is a nice touch. Staff was super friendly making for a warm environment. My sweet tooth enticed me to have dessert on a full stomach and the chocolate olive oil cake with cherries was amazing! Boysenberry ice cream was also damn good!"

  • "Great food! Great atmosphere! Made reservations to ensure outside seating for our special day and was seated promptly with a great table. I highly recommend Whiskinladle, I just wish our server was as enthusiastic about our special day as we were. We will return despite our "flat" service as everything else was great."
