The veggie sushi is back! The quinoa salad is great, flavorful and healthy. The variety and presentation are wonderful. The choices for seating (booths, indoor tables, outdoor tables, beautiful function rooms, and an outdoor function area) are fantastic. Take your time and enjoy the ambiance. Don't fill your plates heaping. Just take some food and relax. Then, go for another course. Make up your own five-course meal. Sip the bottomless champagne or order one of their handmade bloody mary drinks. Bring friends and solve the world's problems as you watch the ships go by. Take a break to see the seals and sea birds (cormorants, pelicans, sea gulls, great blue herons, snowy white egrets) right at the side of the restaurant -- or do so after your meal.

  • I dined at this place when it was Shanghai Red's

Now it is Whiskey Pete's - from the exterior, OMG you would think it was still the Class Act it had been. I booked the restaurant for my Birthday Celebration, everyone commented on the beautiful entrance. Inside of the restaurant reminds me of my High School Cafeteria. Due to the fact that my family was all there, it didn't matter what the place looked like, I was just happy to be together with everyone. The wait staff acted like they were in a hurry to get us out as quickly as possible. I ordered the Prime Rib and it was tough like shoe leather, I asked for an end cut and I get it, it is typically well done, but this was dry, cold and had no taste. They brought me a birthday piece of cheesecake and set it down for me to blow out the candle in spite of the fact that 1/2 of my party were not seated at the table to join in the Birthday Song part of the celebration, great...as well another party of about 20+ people were seated right next to our table and they were screaming, yelling and because they were drinking alcohol, I am sure they didn't realize just how loud they were. I still had a good time with my family, as they are wonderful people, but this restaurant isn't what it had been years ago when it was Shanghai Red's which was an elegant fine dining restaurant.

I have been coming to Shanghai Red's and now Whiskey Red's for over eight years now, and expect to keep coming. Some brunch buffets cost less; some have more options; none has the view, the quiet comfort (at least until 11:30am), the attentive servers and help, and a nice selection of veggie options. I'd love to see the fruit augmented with mangoes, kiwi fruit, and papaya. The quinoa salad is a great addition and very tasty. The main buffet room remains very attractive. The steamed veggies were a bit overdone, almost mushy. Don't know how you can prevent that. Perhaps, smaller amounts early on and more often replaced. Some dishes remain good on a steam table; others don't. These are great when freshly prepared.

Overall, the experience was highly disappointing and the service was downright sad. The one positive is the outdoor seating. My feeling is that Whiskey's Red's needs a complete staffing overhaul. For the price, I expected at least to enjoy the afternoon. I'm one for giving second chances, but I would have to think twice about this place again. After my brunch experience, I needed a shot of whiskey!!!

A great entry with the koi pond & the waterfall, probably best in LA, beautiful landscaping, immediately got me out of the doghouse! Great views from the dining room, food was good, service was good not great, lots of smiles and politeness, overall definitely worth the trip. A few people hanging out by one of several firepits makes me want to come back sooner to have a cocktail

First time in since a long time ago, was met at the door, the hostess was nice, we had requested a patio table, she suggested inside because it was busy and I had a little one with me. She got us to our seat, the view was great, clear skies, pelicans playing with a fisherman's catch was pretty amusing. The buffet was okay not great, but then again, I'm not a buffet fanatic. I was not offered anything off menu so that was a bummer, server was efficient and nice, will be back

Whiskey Red's, as they have renamed themselves, is different on different dates. Sometimes, it's fantastic. Sometimes, everything is good except for the food. This visit was excellent. Archie provided great sushi. Gonsalvo provided A+ service. There was plenty of vegetarian food. The prepared salads were plentiful. Warning! Sometimes the prepared salads are not vegetarian, and it's not obvious due to the dressing. They don't label them. Ask someone if you are concerned about their content. Have to love the raspberry tart in the dessert bar.

I think that it's upgraded from Shanghai Reds, but still needs remodeling---remove old carpets that have an unpleasant odor, update bathrooms, etc. I thought the food was pretty good overall and priced well, too. Nothing unique, but the lobster tail, although small, was not overcooked, etc. The waiters were very pleasant. The outdoor area, is always a plus---can't beat the Marina view. That location has alot to offer, so hopefully they can complete their renovations and keep the food interesting---I'd like to see it do well.

We went for the Sunday brunch with an elderly grandmother. The seating and staffing were fine. The food was good but nothing stands out particularly. if there was a complaint it regards the awkward setup of the brunch stations and tables where the flow of people is difficult and crowded at points in doorways and transition areas. The view is great as always.

  • Shangahi Red's Sunday brunch
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010
    Dined on 9/2/2012
Shangahi Red's Sunday brunch has much to offer but much to improve (or reinstate) as well. The restaurant offers a great variety of foods for all palates and those customers with food restrictions. However, the interior, the food, and the service, all seem to have been hit by the unavoidable curse that is time: conformity with fame. The decor can be "old fashioned" or "retro" and keep its appeal, yet the place looks neglected. The service is irregular: some waiters and chefs are very attentive, while others may ignore you or ask to do it yourself. Finally, the food tastes like a great chef's recipee passed down to youngers chefs, but has lost constancy and fidelity to its intended form (i.e. coffee, roast beef, eggs dishes, etc.)

On 8/26/2012, my wife and I went there for our 22nd anniversary. After being seated at a table we we requested to a move to another table. There were a number of unused tables available. Immediately, after moving my wife discovered that she had left her anniversary card and new bracelet(still in the gift box) on the first table. I went back to get them, but they were gone that quickly. We reported it to the our waiter. He checked around and found nothing. He did not seem that serious, because we noticed him across the way appearing to have casual chats with others, and then taking an inordinate amount of time getting back to us. We talked to the manager, but it did no good. We believe a staff member stole her anniversary gift and card.

Drove 2 hours from San Diego to find noisy kids running all over the place, and basically a $40 omelete bar where they soak the veggies in oil to keep them from sticking to the pan. Soggy, meatless crab legs, barren sushi bar, the roast was gone at 1pm and the buffet closes at 3. No other meat was available. The place settings resemble a cafeteria and we had to wait 25 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. Go to a casino (or a Sizzler) and get a much better meal at a fraction of the price.

this was one of the worst experiences I've had at a restaurant in quite a while. I took several of my friends and family there to treat them to dinner and it was a disaster. The server started out ok then we never saw him again. I had to leave the table to go find him twice. I actually sent one dish back, I couldn't tell you the last time I had to do that. The food was aweful and I can't believe they are still in business. Needless to say we won't be going back.

The Brunch was something I wouldn't expect to pay $36.00 for.The waiter service was just service, no personality and he poured champagne over top and onto the table more than once. Coffee took 6-10 minutes to arrive once ordered. We arrived at our 11am reservation time and were seated in a pleasant viewing area so we could see the waterfront. The first stop was the waffle/omlette station w/12 people and one cook who only greeted us with "next in line" Waffles made in 1st round were burnt and 2nd round chewy.Fresh strawberries were at least 2-3 days old and the king crab was overly salty and mushy. The chocolate fountain was a mess and mini churros there were so stale no amount of choc could compensate. Don't bother. IHop instead take coupon

My family met here to celebrate my birthday. We were not greeted at the reception area. We asked a passer by who stated that it was not his area. Service was terrible. We had to ask for the menus. I guess they assumed we would find the buffet on our own and not want anything off of their menu. I was waiting for dessert so that we could blow out candles....however we were given the bill and never shown dessert tray. Other tables were offered the dessert tray. I was sad. It appears that they are catering to a buffet crowd....not a lot of personalized service. We enjoyed the libations and the view. That's about it. I would not go back or recommend to anyone I like. Poor management.

The food has gotten worst each year and definitely not worth the heafty $36/pp price tag. At least not for the quality of food they offer.
