  • "My food was very good but not outstanding. The service was pleasant - our waitress was a doll. Prices were what I expected. Good experience!"

  • "Friendly atmosphere, wide expanse of windows that brighten the room, wonderful food, and amazing staff who are welcoming, personable, efficient and resourceful. It's a 'gold star' experience for us always!"

  • "I am sure this little gem is often overlooked by foodies. It isn't in a "trendy" spot in the city. Nor is it "trendy". However, it is straight forward...excellent food, outstanding service, very friendly staff, with a NYC neighborhood feel. It seems settled and sure of itself. It should be, because it's terrific. Oh, and the best key lime pie I have ever eaten...and I'm from the south with a mother who was a baker."

  • "This is an unfound treasure. Food is excellent, using lots of local ingredients and different cuisines. Old fashioned meat loaf to lamb to fish. Three of us each had tasty dishes. Very nice wine selection and full bar. Service was attentive."

  • "I've probably walked past West Cafe a dozen times in my travels to Portland. It looks very unassuming from the street, and is deceptive in its appearance. I booked a reservation there through Open Table because it was close to where I was staying and the menu looked diversified. What a lovely place it turned out to be. There was live music - a soulful but relaxing jazz singer on keyboards with a wonderful guitar accompaniment - pleasant ambiance, fantastic staff, and amazing food. I'm looking forward to going back!"

  • "We enjoyed a nice dinner with four friends before heading off to a concert. Staff were very good about getting us finished in time for our 7:30 pm curtain raising, without seeming hurried about it. If you're in the southwest end of downtown Portland, West Cafe is a pleasant place for a good meal. The ambient noise is fairly low, so it's a good place for conversation."

  • "We have been going to the West Cafe for brunch every year at this time. Their food is usually very good. Unfortunately, the special (corned beef with a poached egg) was horribly overdone and not worth eating. We had several people at the table, but we were never offered more coffee, asked is everything was OK, asked if anyone needed new beverages, nothing. It was not overly busy, but communication was extremely difficult. If I pay $2 for coffee, I expect to have it on hand and ready to go. I expect to be offered a refresher or even a new cup, if the liquid is cooled. Our bill could not be split up for some reason-I guess you can't add the gratuity to everyone's bill, right? Disappointing to say the least."

  • "I don't often have lunch meetings in Portland, however, when I do, this will be a top choice. The staff at West Cafe went out of their way to make sure we were in a quiet corner away from the road construction the city had started that morning. They accommodated my very early arrival and took great care of us throughout our lunch meeting. The restaurant atmosphere was quiet and comfortable and we had a wonderful meeting, thanks in part to the work of the staff to attend to our needs. The food was excellent as well. My colleagues had dessert and it looked wonderful...as if in the nicest restaurants in town!"

  • "Unfortunately, my partner found a human hair in her Caesar salad. While the salad was replaced and comped, the incident left a bad taste (pun intended). The chicken pot pie was also disappointing."

  • "Wonderful location for great dinner prior to an event, parking is easy, food is great and servers get you out on time."

  • "We live a block from West Cafe (12th and SW Jefferson St)..............................it has never failed us. Birthday gatherings, Happy Hour, quiet dinners, solitary lunches.......................and special occasion Brunches.................................it fits the bill. The owners and staff are stellar and they know our names and try to seat us at our favorite table if it's available. The food is creative and delicious, especially Connie's desserts ! The wine list is not extensive but I think that's good. It's readable and there are excellent choices. And the prices are reasonable. West Cafe is our go to place for a meal or snack in our neighborhood."

  • "We have a friend who took a jazz workshop and the "final" was to sing three jazz songs on Wed. evening, Feb 26th. Although we were in the way back dining area - farthest from the floor show, we could see and hear all the jazz workshop students just fine from where we were. Plus we were able to have a fabulous dinner while listening. Thanks for a great evening!"

  • "Four of us celebrated Valentine's Day with a delightful dinner. The staff is attentive and the food was excellent and beautifully presented. Outstanding breads and salads started our meal. Our entrees were well prepared and nicely seasoned. Excellent desserts as well. We'll happily return."

  • "I took my wife here for Valentine's dinner and it was perfect! We both had a drink, appetizer and a meal and the final bill was only $56 dollars. The grilled meatloaf was wonderful. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a romantic restaurant with very good food. I gave it four stars on the food only because the olive dip was a bit salty.. but that is very very minor ding. Overall, I highly encourage you to try this place out!"

  • "The house salad and the appetizer (mushrooms in sherry w/brie on a bed of arugula) was good. My wife loved the butternut squash with hazelnuts and grilled chicken. I was slightly less happy with the chicken pot pie whose crust was good, but uninspiring, as were both the chicken and the vegetables in it. Desert was a redemption, the dutch apple crumb pie ala mode being fabulous. So what keeps me from rating this place higher? It was a bit too noisy, I didn't care much for the atmosphere - a bit too industrial for me and the dining area layout made you feel as if you were in a fishbowl. My food being a bit uninspiring was not a deal-killer, as I'd come back again, just with my expectations set a bit lower. It was a great value for the price."

  • "I drive by West Cafe often but we'd never been there until Valentine's day when we neglected to make dinner reservations prior to the concert. I used Open Table to find something available at 5:30. Based on the reviews I read, I selected West Cafe although from the road it hardly seemed romantic. Friends joined us and all of us enjoyed not only our dinners, but the atmosphere as well. A little jewel and within easy walking distance to the Performing Arts Center... another plus."

  • "Place was all but closed down by 8pm on a Saturday night. Felt like we were bothering them. Bar was looked completely shut down....even though you could order something from waiter. It was horrible atmosphere so we left after a quick glass of cheap champagne."

  • "Enjoyed the ambience and the meal. Very good place to eat."

  • "Our table was ready on arrival. Staff was pleasantly thoughtful and prices affordable. The "Whisper" salad was generous and the vinaigrette dressing outstanding! As was the flat cracker-style bread and olive bread. This was a wonderful dining experience compounded by unexpected live entertainment, and being welcomed like old friends even though it was our first visit. We plan to return, and have already made several recommendations to friends!"

  • "There were four of us for dinner and every meal was very good. Not overwhelming amounts but very satisfying. We enjoyed the setting and the wait staff. While we would normally have liked the timing of the service and chance to enjoy our guests we were a bit rushed because of another venue."

  • "West has been one of our favorite places for some time. It helps that we know the owners, but they are easy to get to know and love, as are the staff. Awesome bar and comfortable atmosphere always. Brunch is inspired and fresh"

  • "We reserved for a special New Year's brunch. It was anything but... Though there were several open tables we were seated in an awkward table next to the kitchen. The coffee was just average and the food was less than. Definitely not worth the price, or the bother of making the reservation."

  • "We dined with two out of town friends, on New Year's Eve before attending the symphony. We felt proud of our city, taking our friends to a restaurant they ended up loving, then hearing beethovens ninth played by a great orchestra! Couldn't have asked for better!"

  • "I have been here before Portland Baroque Orchesta concerts at First Baptist Church a few blocks away. I love the blood orange old-fashioned. The menu suits my taste perfectly. On the lighter side but still substantial. Last time I had the mushroom bisque soup, rich and fresh, and the lamb salad: marinated and seasoned lamb with spinach. Son and daughter-in-law shared chicken pot pie and quinoa salad. It's a nice space, both open and intimate; service is excellent. Will go again soon."

  • "This neighborhood restaurant is well appointed and has a modest size menu with lot of gluten free options. During our lunch we ordered a variety of plates including, mac and cheese, frittata, grilled portobello sandwich. All were reported to be good. Wines by the glass are reasonably priced."

  • "Once each month our group of retired music professors from Portland State University have lunch at a local restaurant. We feel that West Cafe is a perfect place to congregate as the food is always great as is the wait staff -- especially the wait staff! They are all very attentive and explain the dishes perfectly so we know exactly what we are ordering. Our coffee cups are refilled without our having to flag the waiters down. Every part of our experiences at your restaurant have been A+. We will look forward to returning soon after the first of the year. Happy Holidays to you all. Gordon Solie"

  • "We love West Cafe and go there regularly. This time I had a group of 8. The food and service is exceptional, as is the live Jazz music (which is not loud and overbearing). They also have a nice Happy Hour menu, and parking by 12th and Jefferson is easy. Highly recommend West Cafe'!!"

  • "My wife and I wanted to give our (4) Asian business guests a more American experience than usual, so we took a risk on a new place. I'm glad we did. West Café seems to attract an older clientele, perhaps owing to the proximity of Theaters, Churches, and high-rise retirement condos. I loved it. It's a great place for a medium-sized group. You can actually have a conversation. Service was a bit slow at first due to a rush of guests leaving as we arrived (for the Theatre?) Our waiter was patient as he helped our guests make their selections. The food, the presentation, the service, and the atmosphere were all excellent, with reasonable prices. We'll definitely return, perhaps on a live-music night."

  • "We have enjoyed West Cafe several times over the last few years and have never been disappointed. The food is interesting and creative while striking a home cooked comfort food sensibility. We spotted a South African Cabernet Sauvignon on the wine list which the server also recommended and we were pleased with the choice along with the lamb with quinao tabouleh and chicken pot pie that hit the spot before a show at the Schnitz."
