Diner Reviews
  • "I've been going to the West Bank for a very long time and have always considered it an old pre-theatre friend. But this time, things seemed a bit different. My martini was a couple of dollars more than before, my hamburger was smaller than before and not as tasty, and they wouldn't let me substitute salad for the french fries (which they had before). What used to be a packed house for dinner was sadly somewhat deserted, and there was a feeling of neglect in the air that I hadn't felt anytime in the past. Not sure what's happened there, but it looks as if the place is slip-sliding away."

  • "West Bank Cafe is ideally situated for the newly developed theater district on 42nd Street West of 9th Avenue. With Playwright Horizons, Signature, Pearl and a host of other small scale off and off-off Broadway theaters dining in the area has become a challenge. West Bank is on the upscale side of the ledger, along with Chez Josephine across the street. But there are also less expensive and good options. When you want a real treat of a meal to fit in with your probably inexpensive theater seats West Bank is the ticket. The menu is imaginative and modern, and every dish we have had was excellent. There's a good wine list and service is attentive and friendly. We visit several times a theater season, and have never been disappointed."

  • "I've been eating here for years. Our friends met us for dinner and they had not eaten here before. They enjoyed the restaurant, but were not overly impressed. Food was fine. Service adequate. Bread unimpressive. Martini $15 -please! (Grey Goose, yes, but the glass was not too large) A bit noisy."

  • "Conveniently located, service is in tune with pre-theater scene, food is good/servicable. Not a destination restaurant but excels at serving this specific purpose."

  • "We ate here a few weeks ago and had a fantastic dining experience. Couldn't wait to come back and do it again. We were seated at the only table situated in the bar area despite an open table reservation. Our waiter seemed to be more of a busboy. After he took our order, we never saw him again. I had to continuously flag down busboys and the hostess for ketchup, salt, butter, etc. In addition, I was never asked if I wanted another Mimosa. Night and day service from the waiter we had on our last visit. Food was still very good, though my omelet which was ordered well done came out liquidy. Did my "waiter" not understand what I said? Very disappointing overall experience."

  • "We have reviewed West Bank Cafe many times, and it remains the ideal place for pre-theatre dinner. The service is always just right and the food sometimes pretty good, if not outstanding. We are theatre subscribers in that area and grateful to have that nice friendly restaurant with its pleasant setting to turn to."

  • "In my reservation I requested a table not under a fan. And sure enough we were seated away from any drafts. The food is always great, and wait staff leave you alone when they see you just want to relax and have a conversation. The is the place we always come to have brunch and catch up."

  • "Read reviews for the West Bank Cafe, having no knowledge of it before. Reviews were quite positive and I would like to add another positive review. Good food at a good price. Service was excellent. I would recommend the West Side Cafe for a good meal."

  • "Our waiter was very accommodating and went above and beyond. The food was solid: good ingredients prepared competently, you won't have your mind blown but you will enjoy every bite. Have the creme brûlée you won't regret it (even if it's 15 min before curtain :-)"

  • "I've eaten at West Bank Cafe for many years. Sometimes with one friend, sometimes with many. I've never had a bad experience there. The staff is friendly and try to help with any request made. I've also gone there with groups and have been treated equally well. The food is always well prepared."

  • "West Bank was recommended by a friend as a great pre-theater lunch spot. It far exceeded my expectations. We were celebrating a couple birthdays and from the moment the host took our coats to our celebratory dessert with candle -- it was an incredible experience. We ordered the house specials -- eggplant parm and the spinach/smoked salmon omellete. Both were fantastic as well as the Pasta Bolognese ordered off the regular menu. We topped off the ocassion with dark chocolate bread pudding ala mode. A perfect end to a great dining experience. I'll be back when I'm in NYC! There aren't enough stars to rate the service -- 10 stars!!!"

  • "New chef, changes to menu. Number of entrees the same on a mostly ordinary salad/pasta menu. Looked forward to favorite: scallops with a cauliflower puree sauce - imaginative as well as delicious.. Disappointed when saw it was no longer offerred. Had mundane salmon instead."

  • "Sunday brunch before theater was excellent. The hustling staff served the food hot under the watchful eye of the owner. Food excellent, and reasonably priced. We'll definitely go again."

  • "We always hit West Bank when we are in this neighborhood - especially if we have theater tickets. The restaurant is very professional, efficient and responsive. We're pretty particular, but even if there is ever an issue, which is very rare, they are on it right away. Food consistently good."

  • "I eat at West Bank Cafe regularly and, for many years, have enjoyed it as a reliable and pleasant option before and after the theater. My recent experience, however, fell short of the usual. The service was unusually inattentive, in spite of the fact that I was there alone for an early dinner and the place was half full. My server rarely came to my table and instead spent most of her time wandering around the hostess stand while those of us in her section tried in vain to catch her eye. I always order the risotto balls and the beet salad: usually, both are delicious but the kitchen seemed also to be having an off night. I was disappointed in my experience. I will be back, but I would like to feel more confident about the place."

  • "I've taken business colleagues to the West Bank Café on several occasions for lunch and have never been disappointed by the food or the service. It's far enough from the touristy hubbub of Times Square so that it is quiet and unhurried (although I don't know what it's like at night). They offer a very nice and reasonably priced Prix Fixe for lunch in addition to regular ala carte items. Leave room for dessert and treat yourself to the butterscotch toffee parfait. It's incredible."

  • "The West Bank Cafe has been our favorite restaurant for YEARS. We've always liked the location, between Times Square and the Lincoln Tunnel, and celebrity spotting adds to the fun, but we enjoy the food and appreciate the service from a very friendly and able staff."

  • "I love the place. It was our 2nd visit & did not disappoint. Our waiter was friendly, pleasant & very attentive. The menu is perfect with something for every palette. The dessert menu is delicious. If you are a salmon lover, they have the best ever. The restaurant is clean, tables have white linen tablecloths. Ladies restroom is small, only 2 stalls, but clean. Love the waterfall faucets."

  • "Selected this restaurant on the basis of location. Since it's a little more expensive than other alternatives in the neighborhood, thought it had the potential to be a bit better, Chicken dish at $23 was mediocre. Noise level made it difficult to conduct a conversation over dinner."

  • "pre theatre dinner, good reliable food if a bit pricier than comparable restaurants."
    Dined on 3/9/2014
  • "The food was very well prepared and delicious! What they need is service coordination, meaning bringing coffee with the dessert and timing things to come to the table together. Service was slow and we couldn't tell if the kitchen was behind or the waitress was not mindful."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "Service was ok. They forgot our appetizer. They did make up for it with a complementary appetizer (not the one we ordered and not all our party enjoyed it) and a free glass of wine. The servers seemed rushed and it was a hectic environment. The food was wonderful, but I wouldn't go for a relaxing or romantic setting."

  • "We had reservations at 5:30 prior to 8:00pm Theater tickets. The resturant was nearly empty when we arrived and was packed by the time we left. The location is perfect for pre or post Theater dinner. The menu is limited, but we had 4 different dishes and all were very well done. Great place!"
