Diner Reviews
  • "We attended Easter Brunch with our three kids. Our reservation was at 11:30, and the first course was brought out reasonably quickly (there were no 1st courses that the kids liked, so they were waiting for their main dish). It wasn't until 12:30 that the kids were brought their meals, and then it took almost as long for the dessert course to come out. Our waiter was nice enough, but the service was so slow. The food was disappointing. Some of the flavors were good. However, it was clear that the food had been sitting out. The deviled eggs were not as fresh as they could have been, and my shrimp and grits had congealed. The salads were wilted, and the kids did not care for their food (except for the ice cream)."

  • "We have always loved this restaurant, but don't think we'll return on Easter. The set menu with choices was ok; they had to seat us in the coffee bar area so our table of 4 was a bit close; and the service was not that great. I'm sure we'll return on a "regular" day."

  • "While the food was good, there was an Easter menu which was not shown on the Weathervane's website when I made reservations. So it was surprising when we arrived. The food was good -- always good -- however, there was one item on the menu that deviled eggs with salmon and a bagel. When it arrived, my daughter, who couldn't wait to have that, was very disappointed because she was told it was a "type" -- it was deviled eggs with 2 "comma" size pieces of salmon topping each egg with "bagel spices" -- I think that's one heck of a typo, don't you? To go from bagel to bagel spices. We were also confounded when those deviled eggs were served on a napkin on the plate. Not the best presentation. BKWright"

  • "Four of us ate lunch at the Weathervane the other day. I had half a BLT and a bowl of tomato soup, both of which were delightful. The tomatoes were fried green tomatoes, which made the sandwich quite special. A friend had the full BLT and liked it a lot. Another friend had the hamburger, which she liked. And the fourth person had a salad with grilled chicken, which was also good. The waitress was especially nice and brought us lots of tea. One of the best things about eating at Weathervane is that you can then shop at A Southern Season."

  • "Great food at great prices...we were especially impressed by the quality of the cuts. The pesto cream that they serve with the bread is also fantastic. A great find in Durham."

  • "There were 6 of us celebrating our daughters 21st birthday and experiencing Weathervane for the first time. We will definitely go back and recommend it highly. The food and flavors were excellent. We had a little of everything from martinis and beer to shrimp hush puppies and deviled eggs to shrimp and grits, steak, and pasta to chocolate creme brûlée and ice cream. Everything was wonderful! A special thank you to George who was the perfect waiter!!"

  • "This restaurant has almost become a habit for me and my 88 year old mother after church on sundays. The access and egress is pretty ideal for partrons using walkers. Great variety. Prompt seating and service."

  • "This was our first visit here for brunch. We were pleased that we were seated even before a couple in our party had arrived. The service was excellent. We highly recommend the pimento cheese fritters for a starter. We also thought a couple of the sides were incredible. Both the sweet potato fries and the hash brown casserole were terrific. Definitely recommend a reservation."

  • "The menu was sparse and the entrees they did have were bland and uninteresting. We've had great sunday brunches there, but dinner was a disappointment."

  • "Very nice. Location is connected to a mall so not really where you would think it would be. I was a bit apprehensive until I was treated buy the hostess. Beth made me feel special and welcome while providing a professional appearance and demeanor. This continued right thru dinner. Very ice place, good food, great waitstaff."

  • "After the 501 Diner in Chapel Hill closed suddenly last year, we were stuck for somewhere to have Sunday brunch. A friend suggested the WeatherVane, which is an upmarket alternative to a number of breakfast places in Durham (e.g. Denny's, Elmo's Diner, One More Broken Egg) and Chapel Hill. The WeatherVane's menu is excellent, the prices reasonable and the service prompt. When the universities (UNC, Duke) are in session, and around graduations and public holidays, it is wise to book days ahead of time (we use Open Table). If you linger too long (e,g, more than 90 minutes), you may be asked to depart to allow others who have bookings to be seated. Vegetarians may select non-meat alternatives for menu items at no extra charge. Check it out!"

  • "I really enjoyed the large brunch menu. The food tasted very fresh and everything came out perfect. Their grits are the best I have had in a restaurant! Service was friendly and efficient. A relaxing and enjoyable spot for brunch."

  • "Food was great. Service was quick. Restaurant was relatively empty on a Sunday evening, which allowed for fast food preparation. Small plates seemed superior to large plate entrees."

  • "Always a wonderful lunch and attentive wait staff!"

  • "I always liked the Weathervane in the past, the menu has been excellent the wait staff knowlegeable and attentive (especially a gentleman who I believe was named Ivan). The most recent experience, not so much. To begin with, the spartan decor is not inviting as a romantic or special occasion destination--it used to be very tasteful and, for Chapel Hill at any rate, somewhat upscale. It more resembles a family diner now. While I appreciate southern cuisine, it is not what I (used to) go to Weathervane for. If I want southern, I will go to Crook's Corner--they do a better job with it and quite frankly, although noisy at times, the atmosphere is much more inviting. I just realized I was 2000+ characters over the limit for the review. WV=Fail"

  • "The service and atmosphere are great but our lunch was average. I have had better meals here so it may have just been my food choice. I had the chicken salad sandwich and it tasted overly seasoned. The sweet potato fries were good though."

  • "This is my favorite spot in Chapel Hill, PERIOD. Great food, great service, lovely atmosphere. An absolutely perfect afternoon. Thank you!"

  • "Butternut squash soup, tastes good, sat on counter too long before serving as it was luke warm and I prefer this soup hot. Entree of mahi was very good, great presentation, sauces fit the fish. Dessert, disappointing, ordered the Butterscotch Pot de Creme and the serving was two-thirds whipped cream, could barely taste the butterscotch. The service was average, given the number of table being served while we were there, which was three other tables, we would expect to see someone filling up water glasses long before they are empty and someone returning to see if anyone wanted another cocktail. Reasonable people as we are, people who eat out a lot have expectations about how service and food should be and best experience at best was average."

  • "We moved away from the triangle about 10 years ago, but I try to eat at the Weathervane when I'm back in the area. It's been a favorite of mine from the early days of A Southern Season. Delicious food and great atmosphere. I've always had a wonderful dining experience."

  • "Good Sunday brunch eating experience. Very good staff every time I have been there. We had a group of nine family with a reservation. Had a great experience. Eat there probably once a month with different groups. Good place to meet friends."

  • "It was 21 minutes to the first offer of water. It was 43 minutes to the delivery of our drinks It was 57 minutes to the delivery of our appetizer. It was 1+15 to the delivery of our entrees. My pork chop was TOUGH but I thought I would take a chance. Dumb on my part! I will not be back. We should have walked out before the drinks were delivered."

  • "Went there for brunch Sunday, our reservation was for 2:15 and a few people in our party was late; sadly the brunch cuts off at 3pm and this those who came at 3:10 had to order off the other non-brunch items. Overall atmosphere was nice and would go back to check out their dinner selections. No one was jumping up and down about their entry but I see the potential so would definately try again. 4 brunch items were sold out at 2:30 due to a busy morning which is good for the resturant but unfortunate for me."

  • "Great food, and their coffee is sublime! The service varies between excellent and so-so, depending upon the server assigned to your table. It's really fun to enjoy a meal with friends/family, then stroll through the store, which is nothing short of fantastic for anyone who cooks or enjoys good food, or needs to find a nice gift."

  • "We went for brunch on 2/23 & were disappointed in the food & service. Their older, more experienced servers have been replaced w/ less experienced servers. Very nice people but it is not the same. The food was not very good - not awful- just not very good. They had run out of two of my entrée choices by 1:30 p.m. I ordered Eggs Benedict. The English muffins were small, flattened & somewhat burned w/ only a light drizzle of Hollandaise. No garnish. I asked for more Hollandaise and got a little cup with at least an ounce of sauce in it. Thanks! My friend's breakfast was more substantial w/ a heavily breaded fried green tomato slice, eggs & a strip of ham w/ a garnish of five tiny little purple grapes rolling merrily around on the plate..."

  • "We were surprised that the restaurant was so busy for breakfast last Saturday morning. Glad we had a reservation for our group of seven. Our waiter was quick to take drink orders as our group arrived and he kept our glasses full. We all ordered standard breakfast food, eggs or pancakes. It was all good. They were able to provide gluten free toast for a member of our group who needed that. Over all, good service, good food, a little noisy but we were still able to hear each other fairly well."
