A word from wd-50
wd~50 offers fine dining in a casual atmosphere on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The restaurant is open for dinner seven nights a week from 6pm to 10pm, and offers two tasting menus: twelve courses for $155, and five courses for $90 featuring classic dishes from past menus. Bar diners can enjoy either tasting menu or select two courses from the menus (sweet or savory items) for $25; additional courses can be added for $15 per course. We no longer offer an a la carte menu. Wylie Dufresne, Sous Chef Sam Henderson and Pastry Chef Malcolm Livingston II serve modern American cuisine renowned for its flavor, sophistication, and innovation. The dining room seats 70 and the private dining room 14 people. wd~50 has a Michelin star and in March of 2008 was awarded three stars by Frank Bruni of the New York Times.

  • "We went to WD-50 after seeing the recommendation in 'Where Chef's Eat'. Unfortunately we went after we had eaten at Ko a few weeks earlier and it pales in comparison. It was clear what they were trying to do with the various combinations of flavours and textures etc but it did not quite work. The result was still often a plate full of separate flavours that did not enhance each other. An exception was a chestnut soup which was very good."

  • "I was eager to visit this restaurant when it first opened a decade ago, but I moved out of NYC shortly thereafter. Finally I ate there about three years ago. I was not impressed -- but later I somehow forgot that I had eaten there. So a month ago, remembering that I had always wanted to eat there and not remembering that I already had, I made another reservation. As soon as I walked in the door last week, it all came back to me. The service was acceptable... but the atmosphere was claustrophobic; the decor was distracted and incoherent; and the food was hit-and-miss. (We had the 12-course tasting menu.) At these prices, that's just not good enough. I forgot my experience before; I hope I don't forget again."

  • "We went with the longer tasting menu, which was 12 courses, and while each was divine, I found myself getting a little antsy around the 9th course, which is right around when our courses started taking longer and longer to arrive. That being said, each course had its own unexpected and delicious combination of flavors and textures, the portion sizes were small and perfect. (I've had tasting menus where the portion sizes made you feel stuffed after 3-4 courses.) The presentation, the innovative forms the food took (fig tobacco--dark and rich and truly tobacco-y), and the flavors that they brought together on the plate were all incredible. Highly recommend this dining experience."

  • "We had the "From the Vault" menu and it was fantastic. It had these elements of molecular cuisine that WD-50 is known for without overdoing it on this side. The waitstaff was very attentive and the wine selection is also fantastic. The only downside was that the courses came one right after the other. At one point, we had to ask for a bit more time between the next courses because when I have such good food, I really like not to rush through the food. There was no problem at all for the kitchen to slow down the pace, so don't be afraid to ask for it. The tables are a bit too close to each other for a romantic dinner, but then again, this place is not about candlelights but about modern and fantastic food. Really deserves the Michelin star."

  • "Came here upon finding it in a search of the top molecular gastronomy restaurants in the US. All staff were all friendly and helpful. The dishes are always there to keep you wondering. As it is a tasting menu, all portions are enough for such and never too much. More importantly, dishes may be substituted for dietary restrictions. Personally for my taste, a wider selection on the wine list would have been appreciated. The wines by the glass were also somewhat limited."

  • "Overall, dinner at WD-50 was good, but not great. My husband and I had the 13 course tasting menu and three drinks each. With tax and a 20% tip, the total was $536. For that price tag, I expect to be blown away and I just wasn't. There were some definite hits (shrimp "grits"-shrimp ground into the consistency of grits with a corn powder), but some misses as well. There was a lot going on in each dish and often there were too many ingredients that just didn't work. With that said, the service was exceptional and the whole experience was a positive one. It simply wasn't great enough to warrant that kind of price tag. I wouldn't go back."

  • "The food was amazing as promised but at that price it should have been amazing. The portions were so small we were joking about heading to Katz's deli afterward. I suspect many people joke about that. But it was a great restaurant for our family celebration. The service was good but i couldn't help feeling we were being rushed or being pushed to order another bottle of wine. Our check came to over $600 so I think we deserved to take our time, considering we arrived at 6:30 and the place was not filled."

Wonderful cocktails and excellent service; we quickly left the world behind us. And the food! Every bite was a masterpiece. The food was good (and perfectly cooked), and the wine pairings both generous and spot-on. There's just one problem: I can't remember a single dish. Perhaps it's just the inflated expectations that come with a renowned restaurant — and perhaps I ought to have ordered the "greatest hits" version of the tasting menu instead — but unless you've got more money than you'll ever need, it's difficult to justify $200+ per head for an experience that's just... good. I'd go again if in the set for life department (and goodness knows there are plenty of those people in New York), but otherwise, my first time at wd-50 was probably my last."

  • "We booked WD-50 for a special birthday dinner of our son who is a real foodie. We found the booth rather dark and had difficulty hearing our waiter at all times. The tasting menus was beautifully presented but this is the first tasting menu we have ever had where one of the courses was actually unpleasant. The flavours did is not suit all our palates but most of the course were good or delicious. The matching wines were a surprise ( never had Greek wine with a tasting menu before) and mostly delicious. Particularly the black currant cider! For their price it was an overall disappointment ."

  • "Let's start by saying this is a very expensive evening...now that that's out of the way...GO! GO! GO! They have a 12 course tasting and a 5 course tasting of past favs...that's it!!! I consider myself very adventurous and I ate three things I have never had before. The wait staff is great...ask them questions! You WILL have questions and they are very willing and ready to answer. We did the 12 course, my wife was very tentative about the selections and the amount of food...but she tried everything and finished most plates. The amounts are balanced nicely so you will be satisfied and not stuffed afterward. And the best thing is we were there for 2.5 hours and we were never rushed..."

  • "I had the tasting menu the night after Valentine's day and was looking forward to wd50, and unfortunately it was a real let down. When I first arrived, we were asked--as is typical anywhere--to wait a few minutes while our table is set. We order drinks from the bar. I order a root cocktail which is supposed to be inspired after root beer. It was bitter and just didn't taste good. Then on to dinner. With the exception of the desserts the food just wasn't that good. It was either just Ok (in which case it isn't worth $400 for a dinner for two) or kind of bad. The amniance wasn't anything special. There wasn't anything wrong with the service, but again, nothing special. It is just a really expensive restaurant with bad food."

The ingredients are the highest quality, and the presentation of each dish is exquisite art on a plate. We ordered the long tasting menu, and WD-50 had no trouble accommodating our vegetarian diet. They amazed us with each course. The service was spectacular. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Well-choreographed staff made empty dishes disappear, new settings appear, and glasses replenish seamlessly. Quite simply, this was the best dining experience my husband and I have ever had."

  • "I have wanted to visit WD-50 for years and it was everything I hoped for. Did the 5 course with wine pairing. Went with 2 non-foodie friends, the whole idea was new to them, but they loved it. The restaurant was happy to prepare a vegetarian meal ( I called ahead). Every bite was memorable."

  • "We have been before but not for a while, and wanted an exceptional experience for a birthday dinner. WD-50 does not disappoint with it's immensely creative offerings. We were very impressed with a couple of courses while others did not have the same "Oomph " that we recall from past. Possibly we are less impressionable these days. WD himself has been present on every occasion which is notable. The one off putting event...we were seated in the rear by kitchen, and the service station. The busboys would loudly crash the dishes into whatever bin was back there which we found intrusive and surprising in a restaurant of this quality. Not sure what was going on but happened around three times enough to stop conversation."
