Diner Reviews
  • "This was a long-anticipated event for us and it didn't disappoint."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at WD-50 and had a wonderful meal. Out pre-dinner cocktails were excellent. We had the "From The Vault" tasting. Had the most perfectly cooked scallop I've ever had. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. We'll be sad to see it go."

  • "I wanted to love this place. It had been on my list of places I wanted to try for a few years. Our table ordered the 6 course tasting menu. It was the less expensive of the two options for dinner, but regardless, 6 courses at $15 each should not leave diners hungry at the end of a meal. I understand the hard work and preparation that went into them, but I wanted to be blown away by the food. I had eaten at Arzak in Spain, and I held WD-50 to a similar standard. Unfortunately it fell flat. The food combination of the pine with the scallops didn't work for anyone at the table. Scallops do not belong in the forrest. The lamb belly was a nice dish, but portions shoud have been a little bigger all around."

  • "13 very small tastes but only about 4 outstanding. Servers failed to bring sesame chips that everyone else had with their drinks before the 1st course was served. When we asked the girl who took our order she was a bit snippy. Bus boys were polite in asking were finished but not so the female order taker who took a dessert plate that was not finished. The hostess took a wine glass that still had a few sips in it. Good things were shrimp and grits, hamachi with blood sausage, pork collar and duck breast. Noise level way too high and loud music added to the difficulty in having conversation. Was glad to be out of there. Spend another $100 and go to 11 Madison where you will be delighted."

  • "The first time my boyfriend and I went to Wd-50 was 2 years ago and we just loved it. Food was absolutely delicious, service was perfect and we enjoyed the ambience. As we read that they would be closing in November, we booked a table there during a trip in NYC. What a change!!! Portions dramatically shrank (some dishes were just ridiculously small), quality is not as high as before, service got really snobbish (nearly rude at the bar) and still for big $$$. We left the place very disappointed and still hungry."

  • "I had an odd experience at wd50 . There was nothing wrong with the food per se , but the whole experience completely ruined the meal for me. To begin with tables are far too close to each other , for a meal of this cost I do not want to be sitting on my neighbours lap . Second service was extremely slow and the wine tasting matching was terrible , tiny winy portions and wines that did not really go + portions were tiny"

  • "Outstanding service without being uptight. Everyone was on point at all times. The food was as interesting and you imagined, the blending of different tastes and flavors you never thought would go together. The cocktails were made to perfection. We were able to go into the kitchen after the meal with the manager to see where the magic happens. The kitchen was super organized and spotless! I mean how often do you get to have a quality meal like this and then actually go into the kitchen where it was created?! We also saw Wylie Dufresne outside as he was leaving and thanked him. He was so down to earth and happy to be doing what he is doing! EXCELLENT!"

  • "What a wonderful meal! Service staff was outstanding and knowledgable. I am glad we were able to dine here before they close later this year."

  • "Generally, I don't frequent places like WD~50. Not because I don't want to but because I don't have the funds. However, this was a splurge to treat my brother, a big foodie, for his birthday, as well as a celebration of his moving to NYC. WD~50 did not disappoint. We tried tho 'From the Vault' menu with the wine pairing. The food was excellent, especially the lamb's belly course and the dessert. The wines, for me, were particularly good and very well paired. Our server was also genuinely friendly and knowledgeable, always appearing at the right time with water, food, wine, and information. While it may be a few more years before I can return to a place like this, I had a wonderful time and recommend going before they close in November."

  • "I had heard WD-50 was amazing and a must-do before they close in November. I really enjoyed the variety of the tasting menu - we did the wine pairing which was a great choice. The chef also sent out a few extra dishes so we left quite satisfied."

  • "But portions were truly minimal, the more concentrate the taste, the smaller the morsel. Food as experience, not as feeding. Would go back occasionally (but it announced that it is shutting down)"

  • "Every single dish is an adventure in flavor, texture, and appearance. The perfect place for foodies interested in something unusual and delicious."

  • "Had to get here before it closes and I am so glad that I did. The staff was wonderful, explaining each course of the tasting menu perfectly. Go for the wine pairing...it was well worth it as each wine actually enhanced to food. Could not have been any better from the moment we arrived till they took us on a quick tour of the kitchen when we finished!"

  • "I was looking forward to trying out the food. Each plate that came out was interesting and playful. I wish I would have had more time to enjoy the food because I felt rushed to move onto the next plate. I do not think the servers were purposefully rushing us, but we're trying to keep the table clean. Next time I would like to really sit down and enjoy my meal with my significant other."

  • "Prior to our visit, we contacted WD~50 regarding food allergies. They responded positively within 24 hours. On the night of the dinner, instead of removing items from dishes, they replaced the entire dish with another menu item. I was extremely grateful and floored."

  • "It was rainy and we stood outside the locked door at 5:50 for our 6 pm reservation; better to be seated inside and be dry and ignored. Nice ambiance; underinformed but nice waiter; pretty and interesting food, but a bit dull. Under-seasoned perhaps. Nothing popped nor did any one item stand out. There were many (out of 12) that were fine and tasty but just not enough oomph. But they were very good on substituting items that were gluten free as I have celiac and the subs were interesting items, not just wheat-less as is sometimes the case. But I think the 3 gluten eaters agreed things could have been tastier. My companions had great wine and I had a yummy ginger/apple/lemon "mocktail." All that said, I'm glad I got to go."

  • "Our server pretty much mentally checked out when we ordered the "from the vault" menu rather than the larger tasting menu. I had sparkling wine, which arrived quickly while my boyfriend's pea shooter cocktail (which was delicious) arrived after our second course was served. Each course was dropped off with curt explanations - no mention of techniques or method except for sous-vide once! We can't be the only ones that expected to see and hear about really cool stuff! The sous-vide beef tartare was gross, cod tasted frozen, and the lamb was very tough and sinewy. The gazpacho and dessert, however, were very tasty. Our server was mostly out of sight and we weren't offered more drinks until the last course and by then we had lost all interest."
    Dined on 7/20/2014
  • "There are only 2 tasting menus. No a la carte eating unless you sit at the bar. However when eating a la carte you have to choose items from the tasting menu, which are very, very small. We made reservations and we're not aware of this. So when we asked to order a la carte we were told that we had to move to the bar. Food was good, no excellent, and again, overly expensive."

  • "Enjoyed great meal in beautiful restaurant with good service, but only for real foodies. Pretty pricey so only good for a splurge."

  • "Were it not for a price of $155 per person--there is a $95 option for fewer dishes--plus $95 for a uniformly superb wine pairing, we expected almost perfection, and were a bit disappointed with a couple of the dishes. Overall, this was an exceptional adventure in the latest chemistry-style cooking. There were too many dishes to list them all and they're listed on their web site. I would only highlight that the Black Bass was possibly the best piece of fish I can recall eating, The service was gracious, helpful, well informed and non-intrusive. The decor, while minimal, is tasteful and non-distracting. Overall, a delightful experience that we would hope to repeat once they get settled in their new location, wherever that is, in the Fall."

  • "Upon hearing wd-50 will close this fall, we went back to our old neighborhood for one last look/see. The room is unremarkable, but food was as palate-expanding, fun, and delicious as we remembered from almost ten years ago. How many chefs could maintain such a track record over that amount of time, especially in NYC's hot-house environment? "Molecular gastronomy" has many imitators, but Dufresne is an American original - grab a reservation while you can!"

  • "It's almost inconceivable that Wylie's signature restaurant won't be here in 2015. Wylie lives up to the hype - our party of three (my wife, my 17-year-old son, and I) all had the extravagant 12-course (+ cookie dough ice cream!) tasting menu. Only one of the 12 dishes was less than a one-of-a-kind taste sensation (for some reason, the bloodless sausage left us unmoved...). The service, the plated presentations, the mind-blowing tastes/flavors - it was everything we had expected after a decade of living in the area but never venturing forth. The icing-on-the-cake is was when we were invited back to the kitchen to meet the chef. A more fantastic, memorable evening we could not have dreamed of."

  • "You must try this place at least before it closes in November. Great food, served in unusual ways. Makes you consider how your food tastes before you eat it."

  • "Our welcome was cool & aloof; no opened door, no "welcome to WD50" or warmness - almost unwelcoming! The sommelier had to look through the wine list to see if there were any nonChardonnay USA wines! Dietary requirements were well catered for with no dumbing down of alternatives. Some courses of the mega-degustation were brilliant; oyster, soup, fish in particular. Others were good, & the bloodless sausage was weird/unpleasant. The room was FREEZING, so much so that we were shivering. On numerous occasions we asked to have something done about it, but nothing was done and we shivered - hard to enjoy! The kitchen visit was special - THANKs. The service was a little rushed/constant. When we left they refused to flag us a cab! :-("

  • "like maybe you become a jaded new yorker and think oh like all the AMAYMAY restaurants in the city are really just ok and expensive and then you go to WD50 and are reminded that there can be really good and really delicious food and the world becomes bright again and why you live in NY makes sense again. So yeah WD50 was pretty AMAYMAY."
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "We had the 12 course tasting menu with matching wines. And although it was for a special occasion I wouldn't necessarily go back there. The food was amazing, but the dining experience left something to be desired. It was too fast and felt a little pushy when you should be able to take your time with the tasting plates. It just didn't give me the "WOW" factor for the price tag."

  • "Even today, no one is serving food with more originality than WD-50. The menu is a tour de force. An edible oyster shell? A stripe of chicken liver mouse winding its way around the plate to encircle a bit of melon puree? A bold and gorgeous smear of bright red pomegranate covering the plate under a strip of apple tart? The service is friendly and professional but not overbearing. We went with seven people of different food sensibilities and all enjoyed it. WD-50 is an institution that will be missed."

  • "Nice place but the ambitions of the kitchen was not followed through by the the service, personell and pre-mixed (!) drinks."

  • "We did the 12 courses with wine pairing. Each course was a vision that blissfully lingers as you review the incredible tastes in your mind's eye. We were shocked to learn that he is closing in November and very glad that we had made this reservation before the announcement. My advice go now to have the experience. We hope to see him open in another spot so we can continue to enjoy a bit of food heaven."

  • "No questions about it, you have to do the full tasting menu with the wine pairings. The sommelier really knows what's good. Every dish that was presented in front of me was a piece of artwork. Wylie Dufresne does not hold back. Each dish was about two-three bites, but by the end of my meal, I was delightfully full (and tipsy!). Hurry and get your reservations in before they close their doors in the fall. I even got a chance to meet Wylie Dufresne and had him sign my tasting menu. The manager on duty gave us a quick tour of the kitchen. My best dining experience by far."

  • "Amazing good food in different combinations that you never tasted before. WD-50 offers two menus, one big and one smaller (6 dishes) and wine-menues to complete the fantastic experience. Service was high and proffessional. Rather high prices, but it was worth every cent. We will return the next time we are visiting N.Y."

  • "I enjoyed the food, great for foodies. I didn't like that there is only two menu choices to pick from. Would had been nice to have sample plates. The staff was very attentive but kind of stale, they didn't make small talk or smile or laugh."

  • "Top class meal, we have ate in many top restaurants in Europe and this was amongst the best. So sorry to hear that it is closing."

  • "My third visit to WD50 and it did not disappoint. Perhaps a bit of the 'molecular' edge was missing, at least from our menu, but the execution and theory behind our 8 courses was excellent and well prepared. Especially loved the sunflower gazpacho! Great service, excellent wine list and a fun buzzy atmosphere (if a bit 90's decor) round out one of NYC best restaurants...still!"

  • "my second visit here and it was just as wonderful. We had the 5-course tasting menu, a great showcase for the chef's talents, particularly with the matched wines that enhance the dishes and show the sommelier's palate. A great experience, not to be missed. Food is innovative, cooked and presented with care. A truly memorable meal. "

  • "You'll feel like you're on a date with whoever is on either side of you. We were frequently interrupted by a couple on one side of us who couldn't help but overhear our conversation and wanted to chime in, which was very annoying and just the noise level in general, while being in such close proximity really takes away from what would otherwise have been a really cool and unique dining experience. For the price we paid, I really was expecting top notch ambience so I'm very disappointed in that regard. Not sure I would recommend or return myself, despite the quality of the food and wine. The cramped environment really brought my overall experience down several notches. "

  • "We had the current tasting menu and very much enjoyed it. The timing of the courses were perfect and our servers were friendly and attentative. Overall the food was very good, not many serious wow moments, but enjoyed all 12 courses. Would go back for future tasting menus. Also got to tour the kitchen, which was awesome."

  • "I really enjoyed the food at wd-50. Unfortunately I got a bad stomach a few hours later and was ill the next whole day. The food was still the best actually. Service was friendly but the dishes came in way to fast. Seriously, to enjoy a delicious 5-course michelin dinner, you need more than 90 minutes. Wine menu was very disappointing. Glasses were crazy small and the wine as not really that interesting and did no "magic" together with the food. Temperature in the restaurant was also way to cold. "
