Service was very efficient and friendly. It has the feel of an English country pub but the food is more upmarket, of course. We all liked our meals. Service was excellent until we ordered coffee, which I had told my dining companions was excellent. Cups were delivered but no coffee for an inexplicably long time. We flagged a staff member who went to check on it and as she left, our waiter delivered the french press coffee. They apologized for the delay and comped us the coffee. We ordered the poutine, fried chicken, veal schnitzel, grilled asparagus, and baked macaroni and cheese. I loved all the dishes except the fried chicken. There was some herb that was overpowering. I read about it from other diners in reviews of this restaurant. We plan to return to try other dishes.

My fiance and I went here on our engagement night. They took extra care of us once they found out it was a special occasion. This last time we went, it was just for a good meal. The manager came over to check on our meal and remembered us from our engagement evening. This is 3 months after the engagement. He was very gracious and congratulated us once again. Now that is service! This is such a great restaurant from the service to the food. The staff was very accommodating, especially with regard to food allergies. LOVED the popovers -- a nice alternative to a heavy roll or bread. I ordered the filet (medium rare). The first medallion was slightly tough, but the other two were very well prepared/cooked and were very tender. Had the crispy brussel sprouts. From the moment you walk in, you sense that this is a place of serious food, but not overly serious attitudes. Wine list is solid, and our waiter was clearly well-educated in making just the right suggestions for both drink and meal. The lunch menu made it difficult to pick just one thing, everything sounds so bone-achingly good. Steak tartare and butter lettuce salad are not to be missed, and the Rose (waiter's pick) was perfectly crisp and refreshing. Ambiance was very cool - kind of an upscale hunting lodge/barbary coast thing going on. Pop-overs were delicious. We shared two appetizers, two entrees, a side, and a dessert:
Poutine - Hearty, tasted very much like a beef stew.
Kobe Tartare - AMAZING. Stand-out dish of the evening.
Sweet Pea Ravioli - Delicious! Tasted like eating a garden, if that makes any sense.
Fried Chicken - Lives up to its reputation. Juicy, crispy. The fresh herbs in the batter added a very unique touch.
Brussels Sprouts - Perfect. Exactly what we TRY to achieve whenever we make them at home.

One star goes off due to: 1) the salt content should be significantly reduced in some dishes (Black Cod in particular) considering the growing awareness of grave health risks;2) brioches served in lieu of bread appear to be out of place at dinner time;3) the volume of music should be lower to facilitate communication at the table;4) patrons should be warned that street parking is not free on Sundays in this area of San Francisco.The above mentioned drawbacks do not significantly diminish the overall positive impression of the eatery and I certainly will return myself and will recommend it to friends.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were late due to traffic,We were late due to traffic, and still got seated. Poutine was bumped up with an oxtail gravy and some shaved truffles; grits had pine syrup to make it a sweet/savory treat; the tartar came with popover points (!!!!); and the fried chicken comes with roasted garlic and lemon rounds.
Did I mention that instead of rolls, they serve popovers?

Short menu and long wine list of excellent and some unusual wines. Description of menu items was spot on. Brown Pear, Red Endive and hazelnut salad was bautiful and tasty. Black cod was moist and outstanding. I would say the menu offers "comfort food". My wife had the fried chicken, and she had some difficulty eating it, but only becaue she wouldn't pick it up with her fingers! Outstanding popovers were served instead of the usual bread.
Service was attentive and not obtrusive. Ultimately the food and service were both excellent, it's the time it took for everything that really set the tone of the evening.
