A word from Wayfare Tavern
Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.

All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

Had the Caesar salad, grilled broccolini & Fried Chicken. Salad and chicken were excellent, broccolini was barely cooked & it didn't taste or look grilled. Chicken entree had great flavor, meat was juicy, and was piled high on the plate! Had Cosmos and they were below average!

"We loved the feel of this place – like some places we would go in London . We definitely will be going back. The fried chicken was very good and had to try the devilled eggs and they were outstanding. Great wine list. Our server was outstanding (Elaine) she was very friendly easy to converse with, we would ask for her again. All around great experience.

We really wanted to try Tyler's place but unfortunately left completely underwhelmed and disappointed. We were seated right at the top of the stairs which ended up being a busy thoroughfare. The waitress rushed us to order and then we didn't see much of her. The sommellier on the other hand was fantastic and ended up explaining more about the menu and restaurant than our waitress did. Our meal included: fried oysters, octopus, fried chicken, mac & cheese, skirt steak and donuts. Octopus was overcooked, tough and chewy; steak was lukewarm; chicken was too salty borderline inedible, Mac & cheese was bland; husband left most of the oysters behind; donuts were good but not enough to make up for everything else.

Enjoyed lunch with some out of town friends. Brought them here for a taste of San Francisco. Staff was very attentive and responsive. The cocktails were spot-on -- I had the Tavern Sour. Food-wise, the deviled eggs were the only disappointment -- I'd read about them as being special, but they were just fine. The mushroom poutine and fried oysters were delicious -- prepared perfectly, and I ate every bite.

Tyler Florence's restaurant is just as I expected. To start off with, the warm from the oven popovers are amazing. I wanted to make a meal of these. We had the braised pork loin and sea scallops - both of which combined an excellent array of flavors. However, I must say the dessert was the icing on the cake. Roasted peaches on a tres leches cake, with homemade ice cream, and meringue kisses on top. Also, I forgot infused with fresh basil. One bite of this and all you can say is WOW! Never had anything quite like this. Tyler is my all time favorite chef, and his Wayfair Tavern restaurant is a gem in this city. Wish we weren't so far away in Atlanta, so we could come more often.

  • Excellent except for the seating
    OpenTable Diner Since 2004

Our comment is how uncomfortable the seating is at the "captains counter area". They are high stools, fixed position, small / short seats that cut into our legs and made us want to leave after appetizer course. All 3 of us experienced the same discomfort and we were of varying heights and porportionss - 5', 5'9" and 5'10. It wasn't a relaxing environment which is shocking in this age of hospitality. The steak tartare was excellent. I had notified the reservationist there were 2 of us celebrating our birthdays - they forgot and then, when they remembered, they only brought one candle for the two of us to blow out.

Popovers were great, whiskey sour too. Deviled eggs were green and pickled to the point of embalment noting that I love deviled eggs. Excellent waitress noted that after two I was beginning to resemble them and returned them to kitchen on her own. Fried chicken was more briney than a stale oyster and the overly thick salty crust as tough as it's shell. Waitress noticed my distress but my guest took my portion home. Chocolate pie was well flavored but here too the crust was cookie thick and hard. Overall disappointing in light of reputation but, as noted, attentive caring service. It must be very distressing to be waitstaff knowing food is being served that is not very good

One of the most memorable dining experiences, the fried chicken was so flavorful, tender and moist, I am still thinking about it! The popovers were light airy and yummy. Just an overall wonderful evening of food and then topped off by meeting the ever so charming, talented and kind Chef Tyler Florence. I will be back to dine again, again and again!

I have to admit I was a tad disappointed. The service was great. The deveiled eggs app was the highlight of the meal. But I'd heard so much about the fried chicken, WF's "signature dish", and how AMAzing it was...and it was good. Good. Not amazing. Maybe there was too much hype? I enjoyed it but if I go again I'll try something different.

I brought a friend to Wayfare tavern for a birthday dinner. When I made the reservation through opentable I made sure to make note that it was for a special occasion. I also called a few hours before the reservation to make sure they knew we were coming for a birthday. I'm really disappointed because there was no birthday card or birthday dessert like other reviewers mentioned. My friend didn't mind because they weren't expecting anything, I also did not want to cause a scene over it. However, I am really disappointed because I wanted to make the dinner more special with the birthday extras. The Kobe tartare was really good, the burger was ok (best part was the bacon), the fried chicken was amazing, and the macaroni and cheese was good.

We spent a few days in San Fran and we dined at the Wayfare Tavern on the last night. Perhaps our expectations were too high after some of the other great meals we had or perhaps they had the 'B' kitchen team in (it was later on a Sunday evening), but almost everything was lacking seasoning (except for the pea tendrils... they were very good). Overall... nothing horrible, but nothing to make me want to come back(or recommend to a friend)

We have been to this restaurant maybe 6 or 7 times. Each visit prior to our most recent time had been excellent. I felt like our waiter was always rushing us. It seemed like he couldn't get away from the table quick enough. He would leave before we had a chance to ask our questions. Prior to this visit I always felt like the wait staff would go out of their way to make our dining experience wonderful. Unfortunately the service fell a little short of their usual excellent mark.

There isn't a huge selection on the menu and ultimately we all had the burger (three with egg - one not - the egg is MANDATORY!). The meat tasted like real meat and the brioche bum was spectacular. Desserts were also very good - peach cobbler is recommended. Very nice wine list and not over priced. All in all - straight forward - great tastes

Food was amazing & service was excellent! The pop-overs to start off the meal were so unique and fun. We got the fried chicken, salmon, and short rib sandwich on the lunch meal. Salmon was perfectly cooked and the flavor was on point, though we personally could have done with less of the cannellini beans. Fried chicken was SO GOOD. The flavor in the batter with all of the spices was wonderful and portion size was certainly more than I was expecting. Short rib sandwiches were also delicious. No complaints here, we absolutely enjoyed our dining experience!

Fried chicken and seared octopus were good, the recommended caesar salad turned out to be a 6 minute egg on a couple of lettuce leaves and not the "green salad" we had asked for. The waitress was sullen and not knowledgeable about the menu - we asked about gluten free options and she said, "there's plenty on the menu you can eat" without any suggestions. She said the pork shank came with "brown rice" but the menu said barley. When asked again (see gluten free) she said barley "like" brown rice risotto. Whatever. The menu had papas bravas with the scallops but instead came with steamed fingerlings - whether the kitchen made a substitution without informing the waitress or she failed to let us know, it was a disappointment. Not going back.

  • Delicious food, but rushed service
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014

We really loved the food, but unfortunately felt very rushed through our service. Entrees arrived before our starters were cleared, and we had just ordered more oysters to enjoy more of for starters, so it all then went very out of kilter - we ended up having the extra oysters being brought to us at same time as our main course - which was just wrong! The waiter then got quite grumpy with us, which was a real shame as he had been a joy to start with. We generally then felt really rushed through things which ruined our evening really - a great pity because it would otherwise have been great. All in all, I'd highly recommend the food, but perhaps make it clear that unless you want to be done quickly, you'd like to eat at a normal pace!

It's approachable, California/American, with the chef's own special touches. There were 5 of us, so we did order assorted appetizers and entrees. All the appetizers were heavily salted, but the steak tartare was perfectly seasoned. The menu is too heavy on fried foods. The fried chicken is good, especially with 2 pinches of salt on the side so the diner can adjust. The scallop entree looked good but my son thought the tortollini entree size was too small. The doughnut dessert is unbelievable and the chocolate cream pie is good. I'd come back for dessert, but nothing else. The service was bad. We waited quite a while for our drinks and our appetizers came before the drinks. Utensils were not replaced before the next course came, and he was not very attentive on the wine refills.
