A word from Wayfare Tavern
Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.

All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

  • "Everything was FABULOUS! The cocktails were great, the prawn cocktail was outstanding! Fresh, firm, sweet prawns that didn't even need cocktail sauce or lemon. The popovers were delicious and served right out of the oven. The fried chicken was wonderful, really moist inside, with a good crunchy buttermilk breading. The hamburger was cooked perfectly and served with Gruyere on a soft homemade bun. And the chocolate cream pie...OMG, the chocolate cream pie!!! My friend and I had a wonderful time. Our waiter was friendly, informative, and very attentive, and everything was just as good as it could be! Thank you!!!"

  • "The food at the Wayfare tavern is delicious comfort food - from the hamburgers to the fried chicken to the chocolate pie. The bar is great too! It is a comfortable, fun place."

  • "Four of us had dinner, each ordered something different than the others. The food was not bad, it was just nothing special.... And the fried chicken was too salty. Servers were confused as to who ordered what so the meals were served incorrectly. Obviously, easily fixed; but it shouldn't happen. Miscommunication regarding sides so we ended up with too many of one thing. Strawberry shortcake was dry, donuts were very good. They do the best they can with seating, but it is a little snug. I hated that the waiter, servers and bussers would rest their hand on the back of my chair when they were at the table. Especially annoying given my sport coat was on the chair. Nothing the dry cleaner can't fix, but they should know better."

  • "Wayfare is close to work so we thought it would be appropriate for a birthday celebration. I've been there on several occasions and the food and service have been very good, and while the fried chicken and mac 'n cheese rock, the service was barely "good". We were rushed by the wait staff; because we were in a large booth (for 6 people) we were constantly handed plates and silverware and asked for them back when we were done. This did not create a very relaxing experience. Our server seemed to be so rushed and distracted that he could barely muster a smile. Also, the people at the end of our booth could not hear what the interior people were saying. As for the birthday boy, he got a "happy birthday" from the server but that was it."

  • "Everything that the server recommended was amazing. The burger is out of this world and probably the best burger I have had in the bay area!"

  • "We had a great dining experience on the 4th of July! Everything about our experience was out standing; the service, food, attention to detail, cocktails, wine, dessert every aspect was above our expectations. We will return!"

  • "I had dinner at Wayfare for the first time and went with the oft-recommended fried chicken. To die for, as were the fried oysters. Major amounts of food, but you only live once. Excellent service as well."

  • "Great after work feeling. Good food and service, specially liked their oysters."

  • "The fried chicken at Wayfarer Tavern is my wife's favorite meal in the city. Saturday night for her birthday they did not disappoint. Service was outstanding!"

  • "We found it to be generally over-seasoned. The flank stake (ordered medium rare) steak was medium at the least, and the long thin cut of it made most of it well done. It was coated in butter and kind of .. not great. The salmon was very good, but had patches of being very salty. The ceaser salad was good. The deviled eggs were great, and the poutine was authentic. All that said, I expected more. We had dinner at credo the previous night in the same price range/neighborhood, and ... credo was just better. We were visitors to SF so perhaps I'm missing something. The popovers were delicious and they provided plenty of them."

  • "Always return to Wayfarers Tavern. Detailed and creative food "always." Immaculately dressed servers that pay attention to details. Love the fact that there is always something new added to the menu. As a restaurant owner myself, I find this restaurant "right at the top," and will always return and recommend them as one that deserves a return visit."

  • "We've eaten at Wayfare Tavern twice so far and have not been disappointed. The fried chicken is a house specialty and like none we've ever had. The fresh pasta fettuccine is made to perfection. Super friendly wait staff. Try sitting at the bar at the open kitchen."

  • "From the wine pick to the perfectly seasoned pasta, this eatery is abosute heaven. The pop-overs were warm and tender served with black salted butter were the perfect accompaniment. Service was jovial and attentive. Will certainly add this to my SF favs list."

  • "Made reservations but when I got there they didn't have a table for me. We had to sit at the bar. Meanwhile others were sat at tables. Saw a chef mixing steak tartar with a spoon, taste it directly from the spoon and continue mixing with the same spoon he just mouthed. Everyone else's Caesar salad had anchovies except ours. They have us someone else's check. It was just not a good experience. Definitely don't come here for a business lunch unless you don't mind having to sit at the bar despite having made reservations. If you have to come here, I would advise against eating the steak tartar unless you don't mind the chefs saliva in your food."

  • "We had the deviled egg appetizer. Amazing! Chicken was really good. Mac and cheese out of this world. Portions are big so share the sides. Great service. Can't wait to go back."

  • "This was by far the best meal we ate while in San Francisco! From start to finish everything we ate was out of this world. Our server was amazing and very welcoming, knowledgable and made great recommendations. Our drinks were fabulous! But beware everything comes in huge portions so pace yourself! Also we brought a toddler and they were incredibly accommodating."

  • "Our waiter was great...helpful and funny. The food is still good, but not as good as I remembered. The popovers are as delicious as every, the fried chicken was as good as I remembered, but the deviled eggs, poutine, chopped salad were good, but nothing special. The donuts were the best thing we ate. The meal ended very tragically for me...I was washing my hands in the ladies room when the raw sewage backed up and I unfortunately was standing right above the drain pipe and needless to say...it was not good. I think the worst part was the lack of response from the restaurant. No concern or apology. The most sympathetic person was another patron who asked me if I was okay. It was handled very poorly if you ask me."

  • "Went for a romantic "occasion" dinner out, but noise level and closeness of tables overwhelmed the experience. Food was very good but will only go back if with a group."

  • "Went with a couple of friends to celebrate and it was a great experience. Best burger I've ever had with a shareable portion of perfect French fries. We scored a very comfortable booth, the service was the right amount of attentiveness, and the atmosphere was energetic and fun. I'm looking forward to going back soon."

  • "Food is excellent here, their bread/croissants are phenomenal, I believe they bake them in-house. No wonder it's hard to get a reservation here for lunch especially. Their salads are a must-try. They have some cool appetizers too."

  • "Service was great. Still love the popovers. Finally tried deviled eggs. Yum! Stay away from the pie crust."

  • "An elegant but accessible spot. I like to take visitors here, as I know it will be nice without being overdone. So well done!"

  • "The good was great! I had the deviled eggs for the appetizer and the short rib for the entrée. The deviled eggs were delicious and the short rib was tender and flavorful. The dessert was divine! I had the chocolate pie. Despite feeling like I was ready to explode, I kept eating bites of the pie! It was simply irresistible. The staff was warm and friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant. It is definitely worth the money."

  • "Fix your noise level rating. Energic is not the same as so loud it is difficult to hear one's lunch companions or the server."

  • "This was our sixth time at Wayfare. The food and service were excellent, as usual. The deviled eggs are back and better than ever. Great for lunch and dinner."

  • "The 'renowned' fried chicken was perfectly prepared, moist, with just the right amount of flavorings. The Caesar Salad was the best ever made with the tenderest parts of baby romaine and wonderful Caesar dressing. My friend and I commented again and again about how warm and efficient the wait staff was. Our dining experience (topped off with yummy Chocolate pie) couldn't have been better."

  • "In a city with great food, why eat here? We had great service and the restaurant has a great tavern look, but the food is mediocre. Bland and uninspired."

  • "Was there for my friend's birthday and we really enjoyed it there with a good choice of wine. Food was good. We ordered tartar for a starter and it was amazing. Location was also good, close to Bart."

  • "Had a great dinner. For sure will return. The only thing that was troublesome was that the music was to loud."

  • "This restaurant is just plain fun. The great diversity of diners, the energetic staff and homage paid to our anniversary celebration made our second visit there memorable, too."

  • "Went with some friends to celebrate and overall, had a great time and most of the food was delicious. Popovers and deviled eggs to start didn't disappoint, and my friend's fried chicken and French fries were amazing. My scallops were excellent, but another friend's pasta had a cloying and unpleasant smokiness to it that we couldn't pinpoint. Luckily, there was enough food for all of us to share with her. The service was just OK. When we were finishing our meal, the waitress asked if I wanted another glass of wine. My friends and I were discussing how much longer we would be staying and the waitress told us they have another reservation for the table soon and left with my glass (and before I had a chance to give her an answer). Not gracious."

  • "Wayfarer took a bar food menu and up scaled it by a couple of orders of magnitude. We made the mistake of loading up on appetizers and couldn't finish our superb entrees. The skirt steak was perfect and my colleagues salmon done just right. The place is loud, lively and generally packed, as it should be. Oh, and the sommelier knows his stuff."

  • "My BF and I made a day trip to SF and decided to try out one of the restaurants on the top 100 list. We had an engagement at 7 so booked an early 4:00 dinner. When we arrived, there were a few people at the bar but the restaurant was empty. My first impression was not great since the hostess tried to seat us at the 2 worst spots while the best tables were all empty. Of course, I insisted on a booth. Then the waiter seemed a little unenthusiastic--perhaps start of shift and had to get into his groove. After that, when we received our order, everything was as it was supposed to be in my mind. We had fried chicken, mac cheese, butter salad, bocollini and strawberry shortcake. yum yum yum Would recommend this reastarant"

  • "Business dinnner at the resturant. One of our guests was running late from SFO. Resturant was very good about holding our reservation for about 20 minutes and then seating two in the party. Food was good and service excellent. Out of town guests really liked the vib of the resturant and would visit again next time in SF."

  • "A recommendation from a friend turns into one of the most memorable dinners ever. We started with cocktails at the bar which were perfect. The Cucumber Mule was the best and most refreshing drink I have had in a long time. We started our meal with the most decadent Deviled Eggs and the Avocado and Hearts of Palm Salad. Both items were light and full of exquisite flavors. We paired our dinner with an amazing Valpolicella. The Braised Short Ribs were accentuated by the spicy full-bodied Italian varietal. Service was spot on and the ambiance was fitting for so many different scenarios. Just the two of us and we will definitely be back with more."

  • "Service was excellent. We were a party of 7 which included two boys age 7 and 9, and a newborn in a carseat. There was plenty of room for all and our server, Brian, went out of his way to keep the kids happy. His food and wine recommendations were also great, and between him and the support staff, glasses were never empty and finished plates never lingered."
