A word from Wayfare Tavern
Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.

All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

This was one of my favorite places that I could always rely on to bring friends. Unfortunately this visit was a real disappointment and I won't be back as long as this menu is in effect. There used to be some interesting appetizers and sides that were must haves, ie the brusssel sprouts and the balsamic appetizer. These greats are gone from the menu and what's left is - boring. I had trouble ordering sides because there was so little to choose from and the one I used to love, the mac and cheese, was bland and lacked texture. I've had some amazing meals here, but this menu is now completely lackluster. My husband did really enjoy his lobster and the fried chicken was perfect as usual, but beyond that there was nothing to rave about.

We live only a few blocks away. It's very much like a bar, stylistically, and has a bit of a meat-oriented menu that changes quarterly. But the food is truly excellent. We had a very nice meal matched with a very good sauvignon blanc. Quite enjoyable. Some of the other tables were loud, but this reflects the bar-like atmosphere. But it is still easy to talk.

Tyler Florence has guts, serving poutine on is menu and having an hungry french Canadian craving Poutine. His was perfect, the Oxtail was buttery and melting in my mouth, the vegetable base sauce was simply sublime and the dosage of the light cheddar was to die for. We also had half a lobster with some Oysters (again, the oyster we're all from Canada). What can I say about the donuts that we had for desserts: simply out of this world. My favorite meal I had in 5 days in San Francisco.

Great ambience. Tasty food. Fantastic service. Complimentary small desert and candle for birthday. Tables were a little too close together for intimate and romantic dining. Ordered the fried chicken. Was surprised that was ALL it was, no accompanying side. Justice fried chicken - and lots if it.

I can't begin to say what a wonderful dinning experience we had at Wayfare Tavern. We all ordered the fried chicken. It was flavorful all the way down to the bone, very moist and fried perfectly. The waiter was attentive and so warm. We will be back. :)

Really rejoyed this restaurant. The energy was thru the roof as was the food. We ate at the chef counter and watched with amazement how the staff worked together to create some incredible dishes. Just to see the precision of how this staff works and the pride in which each and every dish was prepared just made our evening so special. And of course what we heard of the fried chicken was absolutely true, AMAZING!!!! Don't forget to make reservations ahead since this is really a hot spot. Will be back when in San Francisco. The entire staff was so friendly. Also, the ambience is cozy and beautiful as well.

My experience was not very good at this restaurant . Service was slow and fried chicken was overly salty perhaps from the brine used on the chicken. Food was very slow to arrive and server did not seem to be concerned. Never checked back after food was delivered. All in all was disappointed.

I don't know that I can express how much we enjoyed our dinner at Wayfare Tavern. My wife and I had been on vacation for almost two weeks touring around the Northern California area, and this was one of best meals we had during our entire trip. We came in just before the dinner rush and everything about the meal was just about perfect. The French Onion Dip starter was excellent, and the fried chicken, mac & cheese, and finally donuts for desert were just out of this world perfect. Next time we are in San Francisco we will definitely return, and advise anyone going to the area to visit this restaurant.

We had a work birthday lunch here. When calling to confirm the reservation we inquired if we would be able to get in and out within an hour at 12:00pm. They said yes. We only ordered one course and non alchoholic drinks. The server took about 7 minutes to even come in the room. When asked if we could eat and depart by a certain time frame she said she could make it happen since we were only ordering one course and knew what we wanted. We ordered all 6 items by 12:15pm. At 12:47pm we still had nothing delivered and had to leave by 12:50. We ended up having to box up all items and tak them back to the office. Wish the communication and expectations were set properly as the food is amazing. Prob not going back for any group functions.

This restaurant for my companion and myself was disappointing from the start to the end. It began from we were early 25 minutes and told they could take us at 1pm and we watched as table after table was available all the way till the time they called us for our reservation for lunch. The first disappointment was to be told the truly only real vegetarian option other than a sandwich was "out" or not available. We decided the best way to break down the menu was to eliminate the options we weren't able to end due to dietary restrictions and see what might be left. Shrimp Cocktail, Hearts of Palm and Avocado Salad, A few fresh oysters, and Broccilini side. Just Disappointed. The popover was excellent however.

I was very excited for an evening out with my sister at Wayfare Tavern. For a bill over $100 dollars for two people without drinks I had expected good food and good service as is standard for this type of restaurant. The server was not very friendly and only really engaged when he brought the check and it was time to tip. I am in sales and dine all over the city in nice restaurants with clients and while I am young- I was taken aback how he acted like we were not important diners. Also, we ordered the steak medium. It came back pink and when the waiter never came to check on us- my sister ate the parts of it that were cooked enough. Overall, the experience was underwhelming and wouldn't go back.

Came here with my fiance and parents for dinner and sat upstairs. The bar area downstairs seemed a bit more loud but it was quiet more quiet upstairs. The popovers before were excellent and the wait staff was both friendly and engaging. The menu has items that might seem like bar food but they have been 'done up' big time to make them worth the extra $$. This includes the friend chicken and burger, both of which were delicious (lots of sharing happening at the table). For desert our group of four shared the doughnuts and chocolate cream pie, both incredible. Not a huge beer selection but great picks available and good variety. All in all an awesome dinner, we will come back.

Service is a little off-putting, the booths were uncomfortable (is there a reason we should be sitting so low our armpits are even with the table?), and we had trouble finding our waiter -- and that's on a slow Saturday lunch. We never did get the chicken that was supposed to be on the Caesar salad despite multiple discussions. They didn't charge for the chicken, but frankly they shouldn't have charged for the Caesar salad at all. The popovers are great (aren't all popovers?), the Caesar salad was declared excellent, the pulled pork sandwich nicely done, and the fried chicken was nicely flavored but none of the food was really exceptional. Perhaps the best of the main course food were the shoestring fries with the pork sandwich.

We got to the restaurant and Tyler Florence was overseeing the kitchen, so the food was on-point that night! The service was a little stiff - maybe a little self-conscious, after all the boss-man was there, but I am not complaining about it. It is a loud restaurant, but it's SF, what can you do. Most are. It was a memorable meal and a memorable night.

This place was recommended by a friend and was she right. This place is active without being overly loud. The wait staff was friendly and even met some local guys at the bar who recommended dishes to try. The table wait was just right amount of time to enjoy a before dinner cocktail. The service was outstanding, the table in the corner gave a great second floor view of the street. The fried chicken was outstanding, and was even enough to take home to enjoy later. An enjoyable locale, attentive service, and excellent food, fulfills what is needed for an enjoyable evening

We decided to try Wayfare Tavern and it did not disappoint! The restaurant is located on a nice side street and is a great surprise when you first come through the door. The first floor layout with the bar and "chefs counter" in front of the kitchen make for an exciting atmosphere. The second floor is more private with a small bar and table well positioned to enjoy a conversation. Ricky, our server, was absolutely phenomenal, he was so attentive and friendly that he got us engaged quickly. The menu offers a great variety of choices and everything was full of flavor. My only disappointment was that all the dishes were a bit too salty, only reason for a 4 on the food, but everything was cooked perfectly. I would happily attend again!

The fried chicken was ridiculously good. That alone made the trip worthwhile. One note: it seemed like a lot of the food was over-salted, especially the broccolini which had so much salt it was hard to eat. The tomato soup also was really heavy on the salt. But the fried chicken was perfection!

Third time to Wayfare Tavern. The food is exceptional but especially the pea tendrils and fried chicken. Both knock it out of the park. It's a bit away from the weekend crowds as it's in the financial district so that makes the restaurant a pleasant place to be. Just waiting for Tyler to walk in. That would be way cool.

We really wanted to try Tyler's place but unfortunately left completely underwhelmed and disappointed. We were seated right at the top of the stairs which ended up being a busy thoroughfare. The waitress rushed us to order and then we didn't see much of her. The sommellier on the other hand was fantastic and ended up explaining more about the menu and restaurant than our waitress did. Our meal included: fried oysters, octopus, fried chicken, mac & cheese, skirt steak and donuts. Octopus was overcooked, tough and chewy; steak was lukewarm; chicken was too salty borderline inedible, Mac & cheese was bland; husband left most of the oysters behind; donuts were good but not enough to make up for everything else.

Food-wise, the deviled eggs were the only disappointment -- I'd read about them as being special, but they were just fine. The mushroom poutine and fried oysters were delicious -- prepared perfectly, and I ate every bite.

Tyler Florence's restaurant is just as I expected. To start off with, the warm from the oven popovers are amazing. I wanted to make a meal of these. We had the braised pork loin and sea scallops - both of which combined an excellent array of flavors. However, I must say the dessert was the icing on the cake. Roasted peaches on a tres leches cake, with homemade ice cream, and meringue kisses on top. Also, I forgot infused with fresh basil. One bite of this and all you can say is WOW! Never had anything quite like this. Tyler is my all time favorite chef, and his Wayfair Tavern restaurant is a gem in this city. Wish we weren't so far away in Atlanta, so we could come more often.

Our comment is how uncomfortable the seating is at the "captains counter area". They are high stools, fixed position, small / short seats that cut into our legs and made us want to leave after appetizer course. All 3 of us experienced the same discomfort and we were of varying heights and porportionss - 5', 5'9" and 5'10. It wasn't a relaxing environment which is shocking in this age of hospitality. The steak tartare was excellent. I had notified the reservationist there were 2 of us celebrating our birthdays - they forgot and then, when they remembered, they only brought one candle for the two of us to blow out.

Popovers were great, whiskey sour too. Deviled eggs were green and pickled to the point of embalment noting that I love deviled eggs. Excellent waitress noted that after two I was beginning to resemble them and returned them to kitchen on her own. Fried chicken was more briney than a stale oyster and the overly thick salty crust as tough as it's shell. Waitress noticed my distress but my guest took my portion home. Chocolate pie was well flavored but here too the crust was cookie thick and hard. Overall disappointing in light of reputation but, as noted, attentive caring service. It must be very distressing to be waitstaff knowing food is being served that is not very good
