A word from Wayfare Tavern
Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.

All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

I brought a friend to Wayfare tavern for a birthday dinner. When I made the reservation through opentable I made sure to make note that it was for a special occasion. I also called a few hours before the reservation to make sure they knew we were coming for a birthday. I'm really disappointed because there was no birthday card or birthday dessert like other reviewers mentioned. My friend didn't mind because they weren't expecting anything, I also did not want to cause a scene over it. However, I am really disappointed because I wanted to make the dinner more special with the birthday extras. The Kobe tartare was really good, the burger was ok (best part was the bacon), the fried chicken was amazing, and the macaroni and cheese was good.

We spent a few days in San Fran and we dined at the Wayfare Tavern on the last night. Perhaps our expectations were too high after some of the other great meals we had or perhaps they had the 'B' kitchen team in (it was later on a Sunday evening), but almost everything was lacking seasoning (except for the pea tendrils... they were very good). Overall... nothing horrible, but nothing to make me want to come back(or recommend to a friend)

We had a great time and the food was really great. Our waiter was fantastic too. The only criticism I have is that the hostess at the front door could have been a bit friendlier. She gave us the attitude like we were bothering her.

We have been to this restaurant maybe 6 or 7 times. Each visit prior to our most recent time had been excellent. I felt like our waiter was always rushing us. It seemed like he couldn't get away from the table quick enough. He would leave before we had a chance to ask our questions. Prior to this visit I always felt like the wait staff would go out of their way to make our dining experience wonderful. Unfortunately the service fell a little short of their usual excellent mark.

There isn't a huge selection on the menu and ultimately we all had the burger (three with egg - one not - the egg is MANDATORY!). The meat tasted like real meat and the brioche bum was spectacular. Desserts were also very good - peach cobbler is recommended. Very nice wine list and not over priced. All in all - straight forward - great tastes

Food was amazing & service was excellent! The pop-overs to start off the meal were so unique and fun. We got the fried chicken, salmon, and short rib sandwich on the lunch meal. Salmon was perfectly cooked and the flavor was on point, though we personally could have done with less of the cannellini beans. Fried chicken was SO GOOD. The flavor in the batter with all of the spices was wonderful and portion size was certainly more than I was expecting. Short rib sandwiches were also delicious. No complaints here, we absolutely enjoyed our dining experience!

  • Disappointing

Fried chicken and seared octopus were good, the recommended caesar salad turned out to be a 6 minute egg on a couple of lettuce leaves and not the "green salad" we had asked for. The waitress was sullen and not knowledgeable about the menu - we asked about gluten free options and she said, "there's plenty on the menu you can eat" without any suggestions. She said the pork shank came with "brown rice" but the menu said barley. When asked again (see gluten free) she said barley "like" brown rice risotto. Whatever. The menu had papas bravas with the scallops but instead came with steamed fingerlings - whether the kitchen made a substitution without informing the waitress or she failed to let us know, it was a disappointment. Not going back.

  • Delicious food, but rushed service
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014
    Dined on 8/12/2014
We really loved the food, but unfortunately felt very rushed through our service. Entrees arrived before our starters were cleared, and we had just ordered more oysters to enjoy more of for starters, so it all then went very out of kilter - we ended up having the extra oysters being brought to us at same time as our main course - which was just wrong! The waiter then got quite grumpy with us, which was a real shame as he had been a joy to start with. We generally then felt really rushed through things which ruined our evening really - a great pity because it would otherwise have been great. All in all, I'd highly recommend the food, but perhaps make it clear that unless you want to be done quickly, you'd like to eat at a normal pace!

we've been here a number of times, and have never been disappointed on any count, service, cocktails, wine list, or menu. the food is delicious. It's approachable, California/American, with the chef's own special touches. I finally had the buttermilk friend chicken, and i must say, coming from the South, i was a little nervous because how can you beat Southerm fried chicken? Well, folks, you CAN, and by a mile!! Unbelievable. But don't just take my word, Y'all get on down heah and git you some!

My cousin and I dined at Wayfare Tavern on August 11, 2014. It was one of the most amazing dining experiences of my life! We really enjoyed the Wayfare Tavern, from the bar to ambiance and food! We both ordered salads, avocado & little gems and then split the fried chicken and Mac n Cheese and had more than enough food!! The fried chicken was wonderful (especially with the fresh lemon) and the smokey Mac n cheese was perfect. We will return!!

There were 5 of us, so we did order assorted appetizers and entrees. All the appetizers were heavily salted, but the steak tartare was perfectly seasoned. The menu is too heavy on fried foods. The fried chicken is good, especially with 2 pinches of salt on the side so the diner can adjust. The scallop entree looked good but my son thought the tortollini entree size was too small. The doughnut dessert is unbelievable and the chocolate cream pie is good. I'd come back for dessert, but nothing else. The service was bad. We waited quite a while for our drinks and our appetizers came before the drinks. Utensils were not replaced before the next course came, and he was not very attentive on the wine refills.

Good news: A birthday card awaited my husband on on our table and a chocolate birthday message finished our meal. Bad news: Our waiter was great until we tried to order 10 Beausoleil Oysters and were told they were only for novices who weren't sure if they liked oysters. Maybe true, but we love Beausoleil oysters and didn't like being "bullied" into trying a different kind. We each ordered fried chicken which was a huge family-size serving with batter was so salty it had to be removed (why eat fried chicken if you can't eat the battered skin?) Basically if you are into over caloried, over salted food, this is the place for you. Kind of surprising given that Tyler is practically a vegetarian and only eats delicious, organic food.

Came in to try the famed fried chicken and was not disappointed. Amazingly delicious, excellently cooked, wife had a variety of oysters that were clean and fresh, the only complaint food wise would be the mac&cheese. They had a somewhat smokey flavor that jarred with the dish a bit. All that was forgiven by the time dessert rolled around though, the made to order donuts are nothing short of spectacular. Will be back to try the burger soon.

My wife, daughter and I had a marvelous time. The decor is simple yet very nice. The food is fantastic as is the presentation. The appetizers are all freshly made at a separate station from the kitchen (the shrimp cocktails are excellent). The entrees and desserts are nothing short of fabulous. The portions are good and everything is ala carte. It is expensive, but in my opinion worth every penny. NIce cocktail list. The service from the entire staff was outstanding. All in all a wonderful dining experience. We will definitely be going back.

I've used open table twice to reserve tables at Wayfare tavern! Both times have been great experiences. The staff are super friendly and helpful. We started out with the oxtail poutne - which I think I could eat every day! The fried chicken was delicious as usual. But the salmon my friend had was under-cooked and didn't have much flavor. Drinks were very tasty and the doughnuts for dessert are always a go-to. This place has a wonderful atmosphere and overall I would definitely go here again!

We wanted to have dinner at a special place to celebrate finishing the Bar Exam and Wayfare was perfect. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic. The Rocketeer cocktail, and deviled eggs are a great way to begin the meal. The fried chicken was absolutely delicious...trust the chef on this one and squeeze the lemon on top. You MUST finish dinner with the homemade doughnuts and coffee. They were amazing and worth going to the restaurant all on their own.
