  • "The name is so different we didn't know what to expect. Just moved here and heard about Watts Grocery and gave it a try. Our service was more than excellent. Alexis was attentive and friendly without being overbearing or intrusive. The food was exceptional. Warm, comfortable, inviting atmosphere. We will definitely return and bring our friends with us."

  • "I had flounder, my friend had pasta, and we of course started with pimento cheese. As always, a wonderful evening. Watts does it right, consistently."

  • "so wonderful to have a restaurant that can do a great job with both veggies and meats and where the meats come from animals that have been treated humanely. It tastes good and feels good. the way of the future, I hope."

  • "There were 3 of us. One person loved their dish( meat). The vegetarian found her dish bland. The person Who ordered fish thought the fish was good but the bed of greens was far to vinegar-y."

  • "My husband and I went for a mid-week birthday celebration. Food was great. We both enjoyed the appetizer salads and duck main dish with brussel sprouts was wonderful. Atmosphere was fine, but nothing special. Wines good and very reasonably priced."

  • "Dinner on a special night out should complement how wonderful your company is. Watts Grocery delivers a sensory experience that will make the night memorable beyond the jokes and stories from who's across or down the table."

  • "Great meal. Food was interesting and very food. Everyone had something different, fish, steak and duck. We all loved our entrees and enjoyed the appetizers . We shared the banana pudding for dessert and wished we had ordered two. Next time we go we will go lighter on the appetizers in odder to have room for the dessert!"

  • "I went for the first time on a Sunday night and everything was perfect. The beet salad had a generous supply of delicious red beets the dressing was a perfect complement. I also had the striped bass and it was cooked perfectly. I enjoy collards and the side of collards at Watts Grocery were as good as I have had anywhere. I was going to take three colleagues back to Watts Grocery the next night but learned that it is closed on Monday. Being closed on Monday was the only disappointing thing about this wonderful restaurant. Great ambiance. I will return on my next trip to Durham."

  • "Apparently this place is good for brunch (according to others). I was not impressed with dinner and the waiter seemed "over it". Maybe he had a long day. The food was so-so. Pasta too al dente. Grits were mushy."

  • "I tooky girlfriend here for her birthday. She loved it. The food was great and we really liked how most of the ingredients were local. I highly recommend it."

  • "Watts Grocery has the reputation for being one of better restaurants in the area, but my experience says otherwise. It's been a year since my last visit and everything has become sub-standard. The atmosphere and vibe is still nice, but the service and food were very poor. We arrived at 8:00 on a Friday and the restaurant was about 3/4 full. Everything we ordered was from the appetizer menu and could be prepared in less than 15 minutes, yet it took almost an hour to receive our food. The server gave no reason or apologies (her manner was brusk and almost aggressive). Almost as bad, the food was no better than mediocre. I can no longer recommend Watts Grocery based on this meal. Success seems to have made them complacent."

  • "This restaurant was highly recommended by some friends. Unfortunately, it fell far short of what we'd hoped for, primarily because of the rather standoffish and cold service, but also because our dinners were really nothing special. My husband's red wine came in a glass straight out of the dishwasher, and was quite warm. They did then chill the bottle, but did not tell him that's what they were doing, so I was halfway through my cocktail by the time our waiter (who we could not make eye contact with on a not very busy Wednesday night) returned with a fresh glass. Our smoked fish starter and a duck main course was excellent, but my flounder (with excellent sides) was overcooked."

  • "Fifth visit, usual outstanding food, excellent service. Pork loin outstanding, collards are worth the trip by itself. We have not found a poor choice on the menu. Noise level a little high at times, but what excellent, busy restaurant isn't noisy."

  • "I am new to the Durham area and Watts Grocery came highly recommended to me as having great food. It did not disappoint. We had the Mac and cheese appetizer and I had the ribeye steak entree. Both were delicious. A memorable meal."

  • "It was our first time at Watts grocery and we were disappointed that our server did not ask us and did not explain the restaurant to us or tell us any specials. I feel like we didn't get the best experience"

  • "I always enjoy Watts Grocery. The food was excellent. This is the first time I have tried the cheese plate appetizer and it was quite lovely. The pork loin over collards and grits was fabulous. Only complaint was that the cup of decaf I ordered with dessert was cold and after it came back the second time it was hot, and had several coffee grounds. Those little details matter."

  • "Went to celebrate a birthday, and as we usually do when trying out a new place for a special occasion, we went full on drinks to appetizers, entrees, and desserts. If we had known the portions were larger than we expected compared to similar restaurants, we would have cut back. Food was great, with good flavors. Would love to go back to try brunch."

  • "but service more than a little overbearing - always interrupting conversations, even with the best intentions, got to be a bit much. for a small group intent on a conversation ... but the food! terrific and a great place to take an out-of-town guest."

  • "I like Watt's Grocery, and I've had some very good meals there, but I can't say I love it. Here are a couple of reasons why: the food was good, but it wasn't awesome. That could be because there are so many other restaurants of equal or better caliber in area that I've become jaded. Also, while the atmosphere in the front part of the restaurant is lively, being seated in the back part is deflating. Bad restaurant feng shui back there, and made even worse by a server who was only perfunctorily helpful, like she had practiced perfecting the thousand-yard stare as a prerequisite for being hired. I'll still go back to Watt's on occasion, but I'll make sure I get a table at the front. And hope for more engaging service."

  • "Watts Gr. has become very uneven. For a recent lunch with colleagues, we found the waiter surly and the food mediocre. The salad with roasted beets, smoked fish, etc. was not as good as what I could have prepared at home with vegetables from the market. It simply looked thrown together, and the vinegar in the dressing was overwhelming. Minute amount of smoked fish. We asked for bread to go with the soup and salads, and were told "there is no bread service at noon". We were offered "sour dough toast", which turned out to be sliced white bread toasted, pretty much inedible, and we were charged $3.00 for it. We asked to split the check three ways and gave three credit cards, and one of us was charged ~ $6.00 more. (Ultimately corrected.)"

  • "I was surprised that we were locked outside the restaurant until a little after the time set for our reservation--i expect a restaurant in this price range to have their doors open 5-10 min before the reserved time for a seating. My companion loved her smoked fish salad but I was disappointed with my fish dish (fish and chips)--the batter had no real flavor and the fish was soft enough to make me a bit uneasy about whether it was cooked through or not. We were there less than an hour and there was a feeling of "you've eaten, now leave" from the staff. I will still recommend it for a special dinner but won't go there for lunch again."

  • "The quality of the entree was uneven from outstanding to ho-hum. For the price, the market fish dish was quite ordinary. Otherwise, everything was good quality but overpriced."

  • "This was my second time at Watt's Grocery. First, I went for restaurant week, and my group's experience was just meh (although we loved our waitress). This time, the entrees were outstanding and we didn't waste space on dessert. Our waiter was funny and knowledgeable. We were disappointed to find out that they were out of a handful of menu options. Also - this is weird - but Watt's Grocery smells very strongly of fish every time I've walked in the door. You fail to notice it after a while… but it makes me wonder if the hood in the kitchen is broken?"

  • "We have been to Watts Grocery in the past and have had great dining experiences. We went this week and were quite not impressed. The restaurant was extremely crowded at 6:30 PM and had several large groups that were so loud that we could not hear each other at a table for two. Our waiter was not friendly at all and seemed to not be interested in serving us and we had to ask for anything that we needed (bread, more water, etc). He informed us that he had check on the bread in the oven and it was still frozen which seemed odd for a restaurant that puts emphasis on fresh food. We will most likely not return again...there are other restaurants where we can get great food and great service."

  • "Food was very good, service was excellent. We enjoyed the Brined Pork Loin with Collards and Grits. The salads were also excellent. Also enjoyed the Pineapple Upside Down Cake with Ice Cream. The noise level started out moderate, but then became quite loud as three groups of 8 arrived."

  • "We've eaten at Watts many times over the past few years. Their food is "Southern," not fancy but excellently prepared and always spot-on. Their pastrami is outstanding, so are their fried pickles, biscuits, and ice cream sandwiches. When we have out-of-town guests, we take them to Watts, since all palates—from foodie to "keep it simple, please"—can find something on the menu that works. That's really hard to do."

  • "My meat was extremely undercooked and when I politely asked for them to cook it more, the waitress acted as if it was an inconvenience, went over and "discussed" me with a colleague and manager, and then brought it back after 15 minutes! It was tough as nails! When I addressed my concerns with the manager, he told me that Jessica was usually one of their best servers, that it was "restaurant week", and that he was sorry for the "inconvenience". He made no attempts to rectify the situation. I will NEVER eat here again and I'll tell everyone I know about the poor food quality and lack of customer service!"
