Diner Reviews
  • "Food good but not spectacular Place needs to be remodeled. Old stuffy feel and decor. Wine list not impressive either. Service good; delicious steak and Mac and Cheese. Restaurant next door has better food and ambience plus no reservations required!"

  • "We enjoyed dinner recently. Two ordered steak and one ordered flounder, and they were all very happy with their choices. We loved the appetizers of minestrone soup, watermelon salad and blueberry and bacon salad. The fourth entree, however, of pappardelle was drowning in sauce and the pasta was mushy. Not happy with that. Other than that, all was delicious and service was very good!"

  • "I'm never disappointed by Watts Grocery! The food is always inventive, fresh, and delicious. Wait staff is attentive, bar is well stocked, and parking is easy. But did I mention the food? Chef/owner Amy highlights North Carolina's best and leaves you wanting more."

  • "Watt's grocery's menu is not current. There were several selections on their web page that were not being offered."

  • "We have been coming to Watts Grocery for years. Although there are many great restaurants in Durham these days, we still like to dine at Watts Grocery, because it is one of our favorite restaurants. We chose WG for our wedding anniversary. The food is very good, and the presentation is always a delight. We will continue coming back for many years."

  • "Watts Grocery always have seasonal dishes from local products that aim to please. My friend visiting from Philadelphia was particularly impressed with the quality and preparation of the NC seafood. Service was friendly and professional! Go, enjoy!"

  • "The only word to describe the dining experience at Watts Gorcery is EXCELLENT"

  • "Food was tasty and fresh. The vegetables were prepared perfectly. Hush puppy's were tasty. Service was friendly and efficient. Only beer is local N.C. beers. We will be back."

  • "Chilled honeydew, cucumber and basil soup - outstanding. Black bass and nut-crusted Mahi Mahi - outstanding. Most outstanding of all were the collard greens. After a 3 day foodie tour of Durham, my husband and I voted these the best, and most decadent, we'd had anywhere. Service, also outstanding!"

  • "Food was great, but the restaurant was hot/stuffy. Our water glasses were never refilled. Our waitress was nice and concerned about the food, but we didn't get much love after that. All that said, I would go back. Maybe it was an off night."

  • "Watts Grocery is consistently delicious and always offers amazing, well-prepared food. The seasonal menu is always fresh and keeps me coming back as often as possible."

  • "My wife and I are from Los Angeles and travel on our stomachs. We wanted to try "New Southern" cooking and we were not disappointed! We had the grilled Romaine and roasted beet salads, fried green tomatoes, shared a steak and sampled grilled squash and some sort of "red-eyed" peas for sides. All very, very good and prepared for us without any salt per our request--we so appreciate our friendly, helpful waitress and the chef for actually doing what we'd asked! And the chocolate pound cake with Mexican ice cream was spectacular! The wine list (including by the glass selections) is short but extremely well chosen and fairly priced. A terrific evening at a terrific local restaurant!"

  • "My husband and I went for my birthday and had a great time! We LOVED the macaroni and cheese gratin and my blackberry mojito was super yummy. Our waitress was helpful and accommodating. I would highly recommend eating here."

  • "I thought the food was good but not the best food in Durham or the Triangle. Our server was lacking, we tried to ask questions about the menu and she was unable to answer them and kept asking us what we wanted to know. Overall the food was good but not outstanding."

  • "Great food and great service. I truly enjoyed my time at this restaurant!"

  • "We recently ate at Watts Grocery for our anniversary. I stated that it was so in my reservation notes. We were seated at a good table and given free glasses of champagne! As usual, the service and food were wonderful."

  • "This place was recommended to me by a couple while dining at another local place- and I'm glad I decided to go. The house made pork terrine was fantastic as was the pecan encrusted catfish. Nice wine choices by the glass. I only wish I could have seen the dessert menu before making my dinner choices so I would have known to save room for what looked like some delicious offerings!"

  • "This is a go to place for me in Durham. Not too stuffy, great food using local farmers. She is a whiz at vegetables and salads."

  • "We came to Watts Grocery with high hopes given the write ups we had read. We were under some time constraint due to a late arrival from bad traffic and needing to make a 8PM show. I understand this is a high end restaurant and we should take our time, but between salads to main course it was a 45 minute wait. The waitress must have been overwhelmed as she barely checked on us and our waters glasses were empty. My main dish was pecan crusted catfish. The collard greens were great. The fish itself was partly uncooked and ok. I am not sure we will return, although I do want to give them another chance as this could have been an off night."

  • "Dinner was delicious! If you prefer a quiet dining experience, I would recommend an early reservation. After 7:00, the restaurant gets quite noisy. Very lively, but conversation was a bit difficult."

  • "I've been to Watts Grocery several times before, and have always enjoyed my food. The chilled cucumber shop, was ok, not as good as I had hoped. But, that's probably because I really wanted the hushpuppies, which I've had in the past, and were delicious. So, next time, I'll go for what I want, not for what I perceive to be better for me. The Catfish Tacos were great, I would definitely get them again. The dessert, the Devil's Food Cupcake with Cream Cheese Icing was fantastic. I can easily say so, because I don't like Devil's Food Cake, but tasted the icing, and accidentally tasted the cake, and I couldn't stop eating it. However, my kids also got a taste, so I didn't get to have the whole cupcake, I ended up sharing, which was fair."

  • "Our wait person was excellent. He was informative, patient with our questions, and easy about us not ordering anything but water and coke at the beginning. The food was even better than the service. The soup and the beef and greens were the absolute best. WE LOVED IT!"

  • "Another slam-dunk dinner date at Watts Grocery! We have never had a meal here that was anything less than fabulous. "

  • "I've been here twice now for dinner and once for brunch, and I have to say, brunch takes it. Both dinners have been overly salty for my tastes (but I guess that's also the South for ya...), but brunch was phenomenal. Try the churros with chocolate sauce to share - it's amazing. The breakfast mimosa and Bloody Mary are also quite good. Dinner portions are good for the price, and the meats are cooked well, as are the side dishes (the collard greens are tasty)....just salty. "

  • "This was my third time dining for dinner at Watts Grocery. I obviously enjoyed my self the first two times but I have to say that this third time was disappointing with regards to the food. My husband and I both felt the same way and we ordered two different things. Maybe they were just having an "off" night."

  • "The food choices are varied with vegetarian and carnivore options. Hush puppies are not to be missed."

  • "This is our go to spot for a great meal close to home. The food rarely disappoints and the service is always great. This was the first time we sat outside. It was very pleasant evening for outside dining and overall it was a nice experience. The only negative I would say is that the traffic on Ninth street can be loud with the occasional thumping stereo or overly loud Harley going by, but I would still recommend it for outside dining if that is what you like."

  • "After bring seated by a pleasant gentleman, it was all downhill. The menu we had viewed a month before was completely changed, and it wasn't for the better. And our server acted like he'd rather be anywhere but there. The restaurant wasn't even a quarter full so he definitely wasn't overworked. We ended up getting a starter and a veggie each, which were tasty but not dinner. The sangria was disappointing too a bit of red wine and 1/2 slice of orange. "

  • "Although she did not introduce herself, Jessica provided very good service for us. We have been at Watt's Grocery several times and it never disappoints. The hushpuppies were very good as well as the beet salad. Both our wines were very good. Excellent preparation and quality of food!!!!"

  • "It was an overall good experience, food was excellent, the service was polite but slow. After having been seated, we had to wait what seemed forever for the waiter to come (and she came after I asked for our server). Then the server was very nice and diligent. I would have liked to have more menu options than the 4 listed. I would have also liked to have options for kids menu printed on the menu. We asked for fruit for the kids, but the strawberries were caramelized which was not very healthy and we had not been warned about that. My children only have fresh fruit, so they did not eat much."

  • "I have heard a lot of great reviews about Watts Grocery and have been trying to get a reservation for a while now. I was not impressed with anything that I ordered nor was my guest. The portion sizes were great but the food was mediocre esp the pork loin. We also ordered the key lime pie and I think the graham cracker crust was taller than the key lime filling. "

  • "Led by memories of good meals I Once again went hopeful to WG and once again was disappointed. This is my third mediocre meal at WG in the arc of 3 months. The salad was wilted yellow, unwashed with brown strands of grass. The shrimp in grits was doused in fried butter and took a whole day to digest. The service was great. Server kind and prompt - but the quality and care in food prep has really gone downhill. After 4 hopeful attempts I give up on WG. Reluctantly and nostalgically. Too bad!It was nice to have a good place w good local fare."

  • "My wife and I and another couple enjoyed another wonderful meal at Watts Grocery. The special of the day (scallops in a green tomatillo=style sauce) was outstanding as was the rest of the meal. Do not skip dessert. Our server was knowledgeable, efficient, and friendly. I look forward to going back soon! "

  • "We loved everything we ordered! We started by sharing the beet salad that was particularly well-dressed. We also shared the pork belly with hazelnut risotto which was exceptional. For the main courses we ordered the pecan crusted catfish and the pasta with peas and North Carolina shrimp. Both were incredible. The catfish was a particular standout. The crust was amazingly crispy and the fish was cooked to perfection. The collard greens had a unique flavor which we all enjoyed. Service was attentive without being smothering. We felt well taken care of! If our daughter chooses to attend Duke we definitely visit Watt's Grocery again!"

  • "Food was quite nice, but we felt like the service was rushed. Before dinner drinks arrived just as appetizers did, appetizer plates not cleared before entrees arrived (and we'd wanted to order glasses of wine to go with entrees, but that had to wait until the bartender came to clear glasses). I know that professional servers are few and far between in the triangle, but really, all they needed to do was slow down a little. It wasn't as though there were folks waiting for tables or anything....."

  • "My brother and his wife were in town visiting us for the first time in the fifteen years that we've lived here. We decided to go out to dinner and they asked where we would go. The only name that crossed both my husband's and my minds was "Watts Grocery". We love food, we love our city of Durham and all of its choices, but this restaurant is THE BEST at what it does. We went, my sister-in-law ordered her beloved duck, and history was made. Thank you, Watts Grocery, for making us look really good!"

  • "I just love Watts Grocery. I have never had a meal there I did not like. Watts the go to restaurant for my husband and I when celebrating a special occasion. Also, I take all of my out-of-town guest and co-workers there the first time they visit. Many of my co-workers have make it a regular destination when they are in town."
