Diner Reviews
  • "The mussels: My wife had the Thai mussels they were outstanding. I had the Buffalo style mussels with blue cheese and celery, these were excellent and spicy which i like. The Belgian beer selection were great I had the Duval and my wife had the a light fruity Belgian (similar to Blue Moon)."

  • "I have always been pleased with the food & service at Waterzooi. When we went for dinner Sunday night, we were very dissatisfied with the service. We ordered from the price-fixe menu, & I upgraded to paella. I also ordered a beer. After we ordered, we did not see our waitress again. We had no silverware. She did not come to see if I needed another drink or to let us know that the food would be arriving shortly since we waited over 40 minutes for dinner. After dinner was served, she did not come to ask how everything was. In the meantime, she stopped at the table behind us 3 times. She did come to clean the table and bring dessert but never asked if we wanted anything else. While the food was good, the service put a damper on the night."

  • "The food & drinks are always good. Never disappoints. I love the many choices for different palates. It wasn't too empty when we went on a Saturday evening. But once it got a bit later the service slowed down a lot. Our server forgot my side dishe and returned less frequently to refresh our drinks. At one point we sat there staring at our Belgium waffle because we weren't given utensils and dishes. But then the dishes came but still no utensils and my drink was forgotten. I don't blame her since she was given a lot of tables by herself. She seemed a little frazzled. Still, she was kind and friendly and that's better than someone who didn't give a hoot. Will definitely return but not on a busy weekend evening. But then again I'm old."

  • "Food is very, very good and the service is professional and timely but the restaurant is so loud that we find ourselves shouting to be heard. Best bet is to try the mussels on a weeknight and an early time before the crowds arrive....."

  • "I don't always mind a loud restaurant. The energy can be good. But here it was ridiculous--people screaming to be heard, kids whining, crying. The place is dark and dingy with bad lighting. The food was mediocre, especially the mussels, which is supposed to be the main attraction here. I've never seen such tiny mussels, and the sauce was unimpressive. We ordered the Bouillabaisse style which came with some kind of crab or lobster meat and shrimp strewn on top of the pot of shells--what a weird way to serve it. The shrimp were teeny and rubbery. Frites were lousy too. Will not be coming back."

  • "Great food. I have been here a few times and liked everything. I won't say what my wife and I have had because people should try things out. The staff knows the menu well and can be a big help. This is also a great spot for beer - fantastic selection!! Check out this place for some great food and beer that you don't usually find on Long Island."

  • "Deal on weeknight is great. Mussels were fabulous. It was a cold night when we went, but the restaurant was cold too."

  • "Lots of variety and big portions in this Belgian Bistro in Garden City, NY. Took my wife and some family for some birthday mirth and we had a great time in this lively restaurant. Service was great and everyone liked the food, especially the mussels and frites."

  • "Good food and service but way, way, way too noisy. We ate in the heated outside area which saved our ears. But the dining room in unbelievably loud to the point of being unpleasant. Bring ear plugs."

  • "Amazing food, even if you don't love mussels, which are there specialty, there is something for everyone here!!!"

  • "Can get very loud if it's crowded and the tables are packed tight so intimacy is not gonna happen. However the food is delicious, staff is very attentive and they have a fantastic beer/wine selection. Will definitely go back again."

  • "My girlfriend and I went out for our first Valentines Day celebration. This restaurant was recommended to us by two of my friends. The items on the menu are expensive but it was definitely worth the price. Very generous portions and it was delicious. Service was great and the atmosphere of the restaurant was wonderful and very romantic. The only complaint we have, if you can call it that, was that space was very limited. I heard all conversations on either side of me and sometimes my girlfriend and I had to repeat ourself during conversation. Will we go back? Absolutely!"

  • "Best mussels I've had in a long time.. We split the oregonatta and the coconut thai.. The bread to dip with is the icing in the cake.. Server nick was great and helpful.. Definitely a place to return"

  • "The only reason to go here is for the mussels and fries. They never fail. The mussles are as good as the mussels in Belgium. Now the bad, the BBQ sliders. They are not my taste. The roll that the slider is on is very soggy. There is way too much sweetnes in the BBQ sauce. There is hardly any meat on the sliders and the meat that's there is very dry. Very disappointing. Their burgers are ok. I would stick to their seafood menu. This is what they are famous for."

  • "The muscles were very good. Everything else...not so much. The waiter steered us wrong. We ordered way too much food. My recommendation: two people, two appetizers, one pot of muscles."

  • "Food is great, just exceptionally loud and noisy, couldn't hold a true conversation because of the noise level."

  • "I've come to Waterzooi a handful of times but find myself blown away by their diverse selection of domestic and international beers and excellent fair each time. Any of the muscle pots are a great selection. Decided to their prefix menu including an appetizer and delicious mousse dessert. The wait staff are informative and never over- or under-involved while waiting on your table. The bar is a relaxing setting where you can grab a drink and glaze over their extensive drinks menu. I highly recommend this restaurant for lunch or a nice dinner with friends."

  • "We all ordered mussels, and they were all perfect! Gotta say the oreganata was probably the best. My friend ordered it with extra garlic and it was delicious!"

  • "My husband loves the mussels at Waterzooi, so it was the perfect place to celebrate his birthday. I do not like mussels, but there are many other options on their menu. Our waitress Alex was great. We couldn't decide on a wine selection, so Alex brought us a taste of the two we were considering. I ended up ordering a spicy Bloody Mary, which was very good. The atmosphere at Waterzooi is very comfortable and the food is delicious."

  • "Went here yesterday for the first time and we are hooked! We had the lobster bisque mussels and Thai mussels and both were terrific! We can't wait to go back and try different mussels pots. The service was great as was the beer menu (plenty if other drinks too, just love beer!)."

  • "As always, Waterzooi has amazing, amazing food. We met two family members from out of town and they were impressed as well."

  • "I definitely liked the ambiance of the restaurant. Every dish was delicious. The appetizers/tapas dishes were unique and each had aan outstanding flavor.. I would definitely go back for other dishes. The Moules pots were fabulous and bottomless. The baked hot chocolate dessert is delicious and beautiful. All in all - something for everyone."

  • "This place has a warm cozy feel to the decor but the bar is fun and inviting and always has a crowd. The mussel pots are all delicious and the frites are addictive! Never disappointed when we are in the mood for mussels."

  • "Its like a piece of Belgium on Long Island. The food was great, serves excellent. We had Lobster BLT , mussel oreganato and the cheeseburger. We were all very happy with quality and quantity along with the perfect frites and mayo. ( normally I hate mayo with fries but its a MUST at Waterzooi.) Highly recommend going here for lunch or dinner. Wish they had another location on the North Shore of LI say..........port washington?"

  • "I chose the prix fixe menu which was very reasonably priced. The lobster appetizer was okay, it was small and fried so nothing special. The mussels came in a very abundant portion and delicious sauce choices. I decided to try oreganto sauce which was simple but I will definitely try a more tastier sauce next time! It came with frites and mayo on the side. The chocolate mousse was okay, it was very light which I like about dessert. The other two entrees at my table were chillean sea bass and waterzooi (mix seafood combo). Both were not bad either. It is not a big place but it had comfortable red booths and simple decor to make up for it. This place is definitely worth to back for the mussels!"

  • "We chose the prix fixe menu which was very reasonably priced. The salad appetizer was quite good with some unusual touches. The lobster appetizer was just so-so; very small and fried which does not appeal to me. However, the mussel main dish was excellent. Very abundant with delicious toppings and fabulous broth. I was able to get three meals out of it. The paella main dish was also very good. The chocolate mousse was fine but not outstanding. The restaurant was crowded on a Sunday night and very loud. Tables are fairly close together. I would not call it a romantic spot, but definitely worth a return visit."

  • "We two couples were celebrating our Anniversaries and all chose different moules (mussels) pots with frites. With the price fix menu we enjoyed the more than generous entrée with a salad and chocolate mousse for dessert. Everyone enjoyed the service and food. My husband was even able to enjoy a gluten free Belgian beer."

  • "Came here on a recommendation. Upon entering we were greeted and shown to a table for two post haste. The table they gave us was in a heavy traffic area and I asked to move to a different table. They were accommodating but the maitredi was a bit hesitant. We got another table though, so I was happy. We settled down and were given the specials for the night. They had a BBQ pork belly prepared over a latke and fried onions. My date had mussels with shrimp and lobster bake in a tomato based broth. That, was, gigantic. We were barely able to finish it and had to walk it off for a solid 15min. I highly recommend ordering that item. The ambiance of the restaurant was pretty nice. It's reminiscent of subway station and the lighting was romantic."

  • "If you love mussels this is your place. The mussels are a must have. The lobster Mac and cheese was amazing. Huge chunks of lobster. And to top it off they have Great desserts. I had the Belgium waffle with Gelato, fresh strawberries a touch of whip cream and chocolate Drizzle. It was delicious. Nice bar scene for the 30+ crowd."

  • "Fun restaurant but I hit a not so good day. the service and food was good. The restaurant was cold. Apparently they were having issues with the room temp control"
    Dined on 11/13/2013
  • "The food is excellent and you have a great menu with variety. If you are a mussel fan, this is a must with a great choice of suaces, just as if you were in Belgium. The ambiance is very nice, but note the acoustics are not very good, the placen tends to be loud and difficult to have conversations amongst the table unless you speak loudly."

  • "Although we don't frequent Waterzooi as often as we'd like eye brought our friend who loves mussels there for his birthday. We were not disappointed even on a Saturday night we were seated promptly, the food was prepared correctly and served promptly. If you like mussels there is no better place to go."

  • "Waterzooi is close to my ofice and it's my good to spot for business lunches. It's always a local favorite for us when we're in Nassau County, and their "mussel mania" prix fix dinners are amazing values. If you love mussels, or Brussels bistro foods, this can't be beat"

  • "Waterzooi is an excellent restaurant. Their specialty is mussels and they do them well! The noise level is a bit too high and the lighting could be brighter, however, the service and the food make up for the previously mentioned. And do not forget to top your dinner with a Belgium waffle for dessert!"
