Diner Reviews
  • "Another wonderful meal at The Waterboy.... Great recommendations by Josh our fantastic waiter. I'm going back for sure!"

  • "This was a date night occasion and it was excellent all around with service, food, and atmosphere. We started off with salad and then went to a dozen oysters that were fresh and divine. The waiter, Josh, was very attentive and I went with a special which was Ono. My wife had the duck which was also very tasty. I will be back!"

  • "Consistently excellent food and service. Although we ate inside this time, the outdoor dining is very nice in the evening."

  • "Finally got the chance to eat at the waterboy. We opted to sit outside, though I think the next time I'll go for indoors, it was a bit loud and kind of had a negative effect on the ambiance. We started with a cocktail each, which was very average for both of us. We ordered the melon and prosciutto appetizer, which I really enjoyed! Very tasty, though pretty skimpy on the prosciutto serving. For entrees, my boyfriend chose the picnic plate and I had the bouillabaisse. We were both extremely happy with our choices! My bouillabaisse was full of mussels, clams, shrimp, halibut and rock cod. It was really outstanding, a great recommendation from our server. My boyfriend commented that his picnic plate had the best fried chicken he's ever had!"

  • "The shrimp egg rolls were delectable! The picnic basket was divine! Small dining room but comfortable."

  • "Food is great, staff great, very busy place but worth it"

  • "My wife and I visited for the first time on a Monday night. The room was moderately full for most of the evening (not packed but with a good energy). The noise level was comfortable and we could have a conversation without shouting but also without sharing every word with the table next to us. We had a wonderful meal that spanned across the menu (appetizers, firsts, seconds and dessert). The food - every item - was very good and our service excellent. Straightforward french-inspired dishes with their own twist that are well prepared, nicely portioned, and appropriately priced. We'll be back."

  • "We went to Waterboy for the first time on a weekday where there seemed to be plenty of open tables (see what I did there?) and no wait. The restaurant was recommended by many and it did not disappoint. The oysters were some of the best I've ever had, even if the waitress could not count up to the 12 we ordered (we got 11). The service was good, not great, as there seemed to be some disconnect between the servers and our waiter. Surprisingly, they also had an excellent beer selection. Three different entrees were served and were enjoyed by all. The food, casual ambiance, and value are the real attractions here."

  • "I vist Sacramento several times a year on business. Waterboy is a real good location for business dinners. Food is always excellent, best restaurant in Sacramento."

  • "Accomodating, attentive service, appropriate prices, and a lunch menu that gave choice without overwhelming. We had a party of six and were well cared for. Plenty of street parking."

  • "Food was good. Wait staff was good. But seemed the food came out a little bit slow. But would definitely go back."

  • "My go to in Sacramento for a wonderful meal. Never have to worry about what to order because each dish is perfectly planned out and executed. One of the few places I will eat sweetbreads."

  • "Always a favorite place to bring family and friends for a relaxing evening and awesome food and drinks!"

  • "I was in town visiting my sister for the first time since she moved here. I was pleasantly surprised about all the Sacramento has to offer in terms of dining and nightlife. Of all the places we went to during my 4 day visit, Waterboy was by far the best. We ordered mostly seafood with the exception of our appetizers which were a steak tartar and a tomato & borata (sp?) salad. The tartar was amazing and well flavored. The heirloom tomatoes were very tasty and complimented the creamy cheese very well. All of the seafood entrees were fantastic. My only complaint is everything started to taste the same after a while because many of the ingredients were the same. But it was all fresh and delicious."

  • "We are unfamiliar with the Sacramento area and Trip Advisor gave us very good information as to location and type of dining, etc. Making reservatons through Open Table gave us the confidence to know there would be a nice table reserved for us. It is a wonderful service and one we will be using even more of in the future."

  • "I had read great things about the food here but was warned that some of the entries may be small in size as witnessed by my husband's scallop lunch which had three scallops on the plate and were on the bland side. It was kind of like an appetizer. My fish taco dish was fine with two tacos that tasted great. The service was very good."

  • "Water Boy was recommended for a special occasion dinner as it is on the high side of expensive, but was reputed to have excellent food and service. While the food was superb, the service was merely ok. The wait staff was cordial but not friendly or especially informative and the wait for appetizers seemed unnecessarily long. The noise level made conversation difficult. I am willing to pay a premium for a special dinner, but I kind of expect the experience to match the price. This did not."

  • "My son and husband are thoughtful and creative cooks. They love WaterBoy. Excellent food, wonderful atmosphere and great service."

  • "Requested nice, quiet corner table and that is just what we got. I can never resist their sweetbreads--always delicious. My friend ordered the gnocchi and that dish was also delicious. The beet salad is a standout. We were dessert given what we ordered. Good waiter."

  • "On a hot Saturday late afternoon Waterboy was a delight. Each of us had something different and were pleased with our choices. Two of us did have the carrot-fennel soup and would order it again. My steak had been marinaded and was served on creamed mixed greens, a pleasing combination. For dessert I had the strawberry-rhubarb sorbet and all but licked the dish. Besides the food, the service really makes Waterboy stand out. Servers were pleasant and knowledgeable and busboys kept us well supplied with ice water and immediately whisked dishes away."

  • "Somehow I usually forget to go here, but every time I do remember, I vow to visit more frequently. Everything so perfectly cooked, so fresh and seasonal, so delicious! This time I had the most scrumptious halibut, which was their special that day. Service is attentive and waiters knowledgeable - though I do hate their long-standing practice of folding your napkin if you step away from the table - makes me feel like a bumpkin for some reason. It's a little loud, but not terrible. Outdoor seating is always a plus."

  • "Overall the food is well prepared and tasty but the menu needs to change more often."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "The service as always was excellent, but this time the food wasnt the best. One would expect more that a wing, and thigh for $20+. On top of that the chicken wasnt anything special...it bordered on KFC."

  • "Took my fiancé out for dinner before a show. Her daughter is a chef in L.A. so food is very special in the family! My fiancé took pictures of the meal before we were allowed to touch it. Every bite was wonderful. I had the picnic basket. I don't usually eat fried chicken! Oh my! Wonderful! What a great pick! I will be back!"

  • "We have been wanting to go to The Waterboy for some time and finally it worked out to go there. We were impressed by the relaxed feeling of the restaurant and the attentive waitstaff. We had the gnocchi and scallops dishes and both were outstanding. We will return."

  • "Dining at Waterboy is never a disappointment. The menu is always fresh and exciting , along with their friends staff. My husband and I celebrated our 20 year anniversary there last Saturday and had fabulous duck ravioli as an appetizer. It was amazing."

  • "My wife and I took are son and his fiancee to dinner and we loved it. Our son graduated from Sac State and we celebrated with dinner and wine. We started at 6:30 and left around 11:00. Tried all their courses. Wine was excellent and are waiter was very attentive. Time flew by and we had a memorable celebration. "

  • "We came with another couple and none of us had eaten here before. Our server was somewhat stuffy but the rest of the staff was so efficient and friendly. We loved every item that we ordered. The menu offered something for everyone. The Waterboy is a Sacramento gem for diners."

  • "The menu has your standard fare - pork, chicken, steak, fish, and pasta - but the accompaniments are not the usual. Very refreshing and delicious. The wine list was also nice. "

  • "We were impressed with everything at Waterboy. We sat on a very busy patio and the server didn't miss a beat with service. Food was great and can't wait to go back for the beef tartar. Sweetbreads were also amazing. The manager spent some time at our table talking it up with us and really made us feel welcome. After a long day on the river this place really hit the spot. Next time we are in Sacramento we will be back. "

  • "With every visit there are several wonderful innovative surprises on the menu. My octopus with squid ink pasta and a rich tomato sauce was superb."

  • "I loved the food but my boyfriend wasn't too impressed. Almost everything on the menu is seafood related. There were two meat main entrées: hanger steak and mixed grill which had lamb, pork belly and sweetbreads. I'd eat both but he wasn't having anything that was with sweetbreads so his options were limited. I loved the menu but I also eat everything on it. Service was fantastic!!!"
