Diner Reviews
  • "The reviews were good; the menu looked interesting. The restaurant turned out to be one room, where the maitre'd, bar, serving cart and a dozen tables all share a space totally devoid of ambiance. The west-facing shades were raised much too early, letting in the harsh light and a visage of nothing but parked cars and a derelict apt house across the street. They would be wise to keep the blinds pulled down and add some interior lighting to create an atmosphere to go along with well-presented and tasty entrees. Our "chilled" Reisling bottle was not, the "hot" appetizer lukewarm, and the "exquisite tender pork cheeks" ended up being a stew. Fortunately the meal didn't cost a fortune. A lot of smoke & mirrors at this place. I'll try others."

  • "As we have had in the past, we had yet another very pleasant dining experience. For starters, we had the bruschetta with scrambled eggs and asparagus, which was very refreshing, and the veal sweetbreads, which are a must. The seafood gumbo and braised pork cheeks were both interesting dishes, very well-prepared and tasty. The service was discrete and efficient."

  • "We dine there about five times a year. The lunch menu is excellent. The waitress always remembers our preferred cocktails and salad. Now thats special."

  • "Went for anniversary celebration. Had not been there for over a year. Good return visit Appetizer/first course: April 8. 11:30 am sitting. Had beet salad with salmon. Very well prepared and flavorful. My wife had the sardine appetizer, which was tasty. Portion on the small side. Entree: I had posole. It was good-flavorful in rich tomato broth with tender pork. but the corn tortillas were oily did not have an attractive presentation. Wife had fish of the day, which was filet of sole, lightly dusted in flour, set atop a layer of fresh spring vegetables which were prepared at her request. She enjoyed it as well."

  • "My wife and I went to Waterboy for her birthday. The food and service were excellent and started before we arrived. The power went out at our home when my wife was getting ready. I called the restaurant to explain we would be late for our 7:30 reservation and Kevin said not to worry - drive safe and they would see us around 8 with a table waiting. We arrived a little before 8 and were promptly seated and had a wonderful meal with great service. Many thanks!"

  • "I had the steak tar tar as a first course and the dayboat scallops as an entree. The steak tar tar was amazing. It was a perfect balance on the pallet. The scallops was perfectly cooked."

  • "Waterboy is a great restaurant, with delicious food featuring farm-to-fork seasonal menu items. The food is consistent, service is amazing and is a an overall great experience. We will continue to dine at Waterboy!"

  • "We had an enjoyable dinner. They brought out 2 glasses of champagne which was a great way to start out the dinner! Started with Oysters on the Half Shell, Spring Garlic Soup. Entree's were Fish Special and Braised Niman Ranch Pork Cheeks. Ended with Chocolate Souffle =) Always look forward to evenings at Waterboy!"

  • "Service was super excellent! Raw oysters were fresh, well prepared, & delicious. Prime rib was not quite up to par; middle part was tough & ligamentous. Our wine had too much sediments at the bottom of our glass. Their deficits were forgiven because of their exceptional service."

  • "We try different restaurants when we go down town for shows. It is unfortunate that we waited so long to try Waterboy. The food was excellent, especially since we tried two unusual (for us) entrees. The Seafood Gumbo was a surprise with a wonderfully smoky flavor and the Bollito Misto experiment a hit with a special cherry based relish that made the dish extraordinary. The Almond Gateau was also a special treat. We will be back."

  • "I have eaten here three times now, two for dinner and once for lunch. I prefer the menu and ambience for the dinner service. The food is always good but I like more variety between my lunch and dinner menu choices, particularly if I frequent a restaurant often. The food is good, I adore the scallops and I appreciate they have affordable but very nice bubbles by the glass. Service is always very good and the funky decor is both romantic and fun, if thats possible? My only complaint aside from the lunch menu which lacks a stronger distinction from the dinner menu is, the temperature of the restaurant was so cold we were uncomfortable. I have and will continue though to send people but I'm biased to the evening experience."

  • "This is a great semi-neighborhoody spot within the reaches of mid-town/down-town Sac. Not being familiar with the neighborhoods, we we're kind of lost when looking online for dinner spots, but this was a good hit. Small, but comfortable, stylish but not too trendy, we had a great time eating at the bar -- the bartender, Josh, was a great guy, and a great server, not to mention great bartender! We had a table rez, but got so comfortable chatting with him, that we just decided to give our table up to walk-ins and hang tight at the bar. Interesting and delicious wines, fantastic food, great fun. What more do you need? Oh, yeah! a reservation!"

  • "A gem of a restaurant in the heart of Midtown away from the tourist crowds. Always packed with locals looking for a cozy feel with freshly prepared dining choices. Wine list average in selection but very fairly priced. Service was great. The antipasto plate was a great starter. The seafood gumbo had a nice variety and had the perfect amount of spice and flavor. The Pan Seared Dayboat Scallops were perfectly grilled and the presentation was very nice. I would return in a heartbeat."

  • "Everything was O.K., but the prices and reputation had us expecting more. The initial bread plate was lacking and it took a long time for the food to arrive. The wine by the glass list was sparse, although the full wine list was nice and the bottle we ordered was great. The entrees sounded great but they were a bit overpowered by the bacon and also a bit greasy. The dessert and coffee were fantastic. In general the service was very good except for having to wait for the entrees to arrive."

  • "This was overall one of the best dinner I have had while living in Sacramento. It is in a class similar to that of Ella and I felt slightly better than Mulvaneys. Service was fantastic - well versed on dishes and very kind. DRINKS: well drinks were outstanding, very well rounded wine selection with a sparse beer selection. FOOD: absolutely first class! Highly recommend the scalps! Great for dinning outside as spring/summer in Sacramento begins."

  • "Since moving from Napa County...the land of food and wine, we have been told to try Waterboy to get the great food and great service combo we have been missing, so we had high expectations. The food was high quality, all ingredients were fresh (the chicken liver crostini was AMAZING) and right on par with what we had heard from others. The service was fabulous, attentive but not obtrusive and pleasant. However, even with the yummy food and excellent service we left feeling a little underwhelmed with the menu in general, not a lot stood out to make us want to come back for more. We would go back after a menu change. However I would definately recommend Waterboy to others...and to make a reservation in advance! =)"

  • "Food was excellent all around as always. Especially loved the pork cheeks and gnocchi for dinner. All of my table loved their appetizers, firsts and main courses. The maitre'd was the only downer to the whole night. He was very rude and pretentious. The rest of the staff are absolutely lovely."

  • "Never disappointed at WB. Food is always excellent. The best scallops in town. Menu changes every 4-6 weeks so always something new to try. Can't say enough about the quality of the food and service."

  • "Came here to celebrate an anniversary and we were not disappointed. There is a reason why so many reviews praise their Caesar Salad. It was delicious and quite possibly the best I've had in Sacramento. In addition, the scallops were seasoned and cooked perfectly. The only critique that comes to mind is that the oysters, tho seasoned really well, were not served as chilled as I would have preferred. Other then that, the service was as good as the food was, if not better. I would highly recommend this place to anyone."

  • "I'm not a huge fan of the places that feel like giving you the least amount of food for the most amount of money...welcome to Waterboy. I know, I know, that's just the way most fine dinning places operate, but if that's the case, then your food better be outta this world, and Waterboy's was not. We started off with the roasted almonds. They came out in a small dish with about 15 almonds. I would have expected these almonds to be warm to bring out more flavor, but they were not. I ordered the scallops, and these were delicious, perfectly cooked. My wife ordered the small plate of risotto, and at least they warn you with the title, because this plate was SMALLL! Overall, Waterboy was just an average place in a crowded market."

  • "With two walls of windows and lots of greenery, dining at the Waterboy is like dining in an atrium. The food is locally sourced and creatively presented. One does not need a special occasion to visit; but it is one of or favorite celebration spots."

  • "The server was cold and we were sat right next to kitchen, so my husband was bumped repeatedly by servers. It was boring atmosphere, with too harsh of lightening, no background music, and terribly uncomfortable wicker chairs."

  • "We went to The Waterboy for my birthday dinner. When we told the staff it was my birthday, they unexpectedly brought a glass of champagne for both my husband and myself and it was a delightful surprise! For our appetizer, we had the marinated olives which was just about right because neither of us are big eaters. The Roast Mary’s Chicken ala Zuni Café was exquisite and my husband had the fish of the day which was quite good. For dessert, I ordered the Tiramisu Roulade (and the staff added a candle for my birthday!) which was quite yummy! Our service was prompt without being obsequious or intrusive. The restaurant was packed and was quite energetic. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone!"

  • "This restaurant was recommended by a friend so 6 of us decided to give it a try for the first time. None of us were disappointed. We brought in a bottle of wine and bought a bottle there. The corkage fee was waved for purchasing a bottle there. I had let the reservation know we had a concert to attend and the staff was very attentive to our time frame. I would return and so would all the friends that went with us."

  • "This place was great! I have had food all over the world, and this place is in my top 3! The oysters were fresh and very tasty, the texture was great and the flavor was wonderful. The Caesar salad was perfect, homemade croutons added such a great taste, the dressing was good and in good amount too. I had the blue sea bass, which has changed my expectation of how fish should taste and look, beautiful. The coil flower was toasty and light, the sauce on the fish added to it and didn't take away from the taste of it, and it was perfectly cooked. Not dry at all, moist and came apart with the fork, not mushy, but perfectly firm. My wife's scallops were Devine, and the best id ever had. Créme brûlée was a perfect ending to out wonderful night."

  • "For many years our favorite place to eat was a little known French restaurant in Auburn called Le Bilig. The chef there (Marc) used to say that his favorite place to eat in Sacramento was the Waterboy, so we've been meaning to make it down that way for years. Le Bilig closed a few years back (they moved to France!) and we've missed it. Finally had the chance to go out for an anniversary dinner and decided to make the drive down to Sacramento. So worth it. Amazing food and good wine. What else could you ask for? Marc was right - certainly the best meal we've eaten out since Le Bilig closed up shop."

  • "The aps were good, the meal great, the wine very nice, the service and ambiance a little lacking. The waitress didn't know wine that well and made a poor recommendation. We sent it back and picked something different. The ambiance was lacking I. That I felt sort of I was in a sterile, new built Spanish type setting rather than a restraint that served food even remotely resembling what we had. Food good, ambiance not so much. Could have been a 5 star..."
