Diner Reviews
  • "The food at Watergrill was very good. I recommend the Chilean Seabass. The fish was cooked perfectly, and the gnocchi was delicious. Our party of six was happy with our food, but the service was very slow. We had to ask the servers to refill our water and we had to ask for bread two times before it came. The main meal also took a while."

  • "We had a meeting here and th food and service were excellent. Endive salad was excellent. The Ciopino was great too. A little heat. The Rose they served was also well done. Our server was engaging and respectful of our need to conduct business. Great place."

  • "We started with the sampler of fresh oysters from 5 different regions. They were very fresh and each a little different. Next time we will have to try the shell fish sampler. It looked really fresh and tasty. They had nice little touches like moist warm hand towels (not disposable towelettes) and lemons to clean hands after handling the oysters. The presentation of all the dishes were well done. The ambience was refined yet casual. You knew you were somewhere nice but it was not stuffy. We had a great meal and will all definitely come back again. Well done Water Grill."

  • "I had high expectations entering this restaurant. However, once inside, I had a very average experience in terms of both food and service. I ordered shrimp & grits which was not very memorable. Perhaps it was the wrong thing to order at a west coast restaurant, but assumed since it was on the menu that they could make it competently. However, the grits was runny and the dish wasn't very flavorful."

  • "The WG WAS a great and reliable. Now it seems likr s chain. Menu lacking and the food OK. Alaskan Halibut, new on menu was a huge block of fish, unattractive . And dry. A party of 4, 2 dishes came late, other 2 even later. Our food now cold. Ordered 18 oysters. No oyster forks until we asked SEVERAL times. Got "generous" portion of 2 slices of lemons- really? The service condescending while pretending to be polite. Finally 2 mangers appeared and apologized for all the missteps. The new casual look of the WG is exemplified by the lack of fine service, no table clothes but still high prices. It felt like a sports bar. Elegance is gone, on site ownership gone and we are now gone. Too many other great choices downtown now. Sorry!"

  • "If you're looking for the ultimate, over-the-top best seafood and shellfish in LA, this is it. The selection of oysters, alone, justifies a trip to this restaurant. We sampled a plate of 3 separate choices of half-a-dozen oysters, and I could have kept going. And the seafood entrees were cooked to perfection. An upscale dining experience, but without the dress code."

  • "We went here for our 20th anniversary and stayed at Checkers (Hilton) across the street. We found the place had changed quite a bit since our last visit - which may have been around 10 years ago. More casual now, but still a special place. Service was most attentive - we went on a Tuesday night, so it wasn't overly crowded. My husband had the halibut and I had the black cod - both were excellent. Oysters were sweet and fresh and the bitter greens salad that we split was good also. Bread pudding for dessert."

  • "Used to love the water grill. While the waiter was attentive, the time it took to get our drink order and our food was far too long. We were going to the theater and had 20 minutes to eat once the food finally arrived. Too many other downtown restaurants to try; won't come here again"

  • "In the financial district a beautiful upscale restaurant offers excellent seafood . We needed an early dinner and the water Grill was accommodating. The service was very friendly and professional. The wine list was extensive, interesting and varied. The Chilean sea bass had a beautiful sear and was light and perfectly seasoned. The swordfish was a good sized portion on a bed of grilled vegetables perfectly done. A fitting dessert would need to be light and not too sweet. The key lime pie was light with the right amount of sweet and tart. The apple cake was very good but a bit too thin. All in all it was a wonderful dinner ."

  • "The food was great and the raw bar is a cool place to have great seafood. The service could have been more attentively and i hate to change the wine during dinner because i picked the last bottle in stock...."

  • "Had dinner with 5 friends and everyone agreed that their meal was outstanding. My scallops were the best I've ever had. And my two vegetarian friends couldn't get over their vegetable and salad choices. The waiter chose our wine and it too was yummy. That evening was "quite a treat" for all."

  • "I made a reservation here for a team dinner while staying nearby for a trade show. The service was excellent as was the food. There was a mixup on a colleague's order and they brought a complimentary salad almost immediately and rush ordered her meal. Both the waiter and the manager apologized multiple times and took her dinner off the bill, which we didn't expect. They truly cared to correct their mistake, which was small to begin with. The wine was perfect and the waiter had excellent recommendations when we asked for suggestions for both wine and food. The service was quick and DELICIOUS. Since I had made the reservation, Water Grill made me look VERY good to my colleagues. I will definitely be back to Water Grill."

  • "Took my friend here for a birthday lunch. Started with a platter of mixed oysters and they were all fabulous. We split a salad with beets and apples and it was plentiful and good. The entree took time to arrive, but the waitress explained that the chef prepared the fish but wasn't happy with the plate so he started another plate from scratch! He apologized for the delay and didn't charge us for the dish. The fish was amazing. Black cod with miso. Amazing. Well worth the wait and the "courtesy" dish was much appreciated and it was a wonderful and gracious gesture. Very classy. We got a special dessert with a birthday candle, too. (on the house). We loved our lunch and the restaurant. Would definitely come back."

  • "This is bar none one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles. I have been going here for years and years and it just gets better and better. The chilean sea bass is incredible! It melts in your mouth. Anything on the menu is outstanding. I have never, ever been disappointed. Bar none the best. Great date place. Romantic and above excellent service. Perfect all the way around. I can't praise this incredible eating establishment enough. Simply amazing."

  • "I was looking for a restaurant near the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion and stumbled upon this place. It was one of the best meals we've had together. The place itself is just...cool. The oysters were fresh and delicious. There were so many other things I wanted to try, but I couldn't pass up an opportunity to eat the oysters. I ordered the pasta with urchin and crab. It was melt in your mouth and had a really interesting flavor. My boyfriend ordered the miso black cod, which I could have eaten for days. It was so tasty. Their dessert menu wasn't as interesting, and we ended up going elsewhere for coffee and dessert before the opera, but if you're looking for a great dinner spot near the civic center, try Water Grill. You won't be sorry!"

  • "My wife and I both enjoyed a simple preparation of sea bass, served deliciously hot with a buttery crunchy crust and a juicy interior. Yum! We selected a bottle of 2010 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay to accompany (personal historic reference). Along with house-smoked salmon appetizer and a bitter greens Caesar salad we managed to run up quite a bill for 2, but would return."

  • "This is the third time I have tried this restaurant because is across the street from the Hilton Checkers, which is where I stay in downtown L.A. Everytime I return to The Water Grill, I think it's going to get better, unfortunately it has not. The the batter on fish taco and the fish & chips is extremely thick and greasy. If you want grilled shrimp you must order a pound and it costs $46! With that said I would recommend the crab cake and a side of polenta."

  • "I made reservations and I requested a booth for my wife's birthday. Once we arrived, 15 minutes late and a full house on Friday night, I wasn't expecting to get it. They sat us right away in a beautiful booth facing the bar( usually sat for four to six people). My wife felt like a queen and people thought we were famous. We ordered a dozen raw oysters sampler. Good choice if you are new to oysters. The best are the ones from Washington state. She ordered the scallops and I had the sea bass with butternut squash ( there are two on the menu). The food was sinfully good. I even ate my wife's veggies! Our waitress was very knowledgable, friendly and unobtrusive. Best birthday my wife has had. We will come back. Now customers for life."

  • "I had never heard of Water Grill. I was trying to find a place for my parents and my family to have dinner on a Sunday night at 4:30. That's not easy to do. Most places in downtown LA open at 5pm, so our choices were limited. We went on yelp and chose this place based on the reviews. OMG!!! It was better than I could have hoped for. The ambience was awesome and the food was fantastic. We got oysters and shrimp for an appetizer. They were so fresh and so delicious that I am still thinking about them. We all got fish entree's and they were all very good. For dessert they brought us a bread pudding for my birthday that was terrific. I seriously can't wait to go back to Water Grill. From start to finish, it was fantastic."

  • "The food was incredible but the service was lacking. There is really no excuse to not check on your guests during their meal. And, in particular, you should never allow guests to sit, after they are done with their dessert and coffee, without a check. We actually had to hunt down our server to get the bill. After such a lovely (and expensive meal) it is unpleasant to be disregarded and stuck there just to pay."

  • "I live in Orange County and occasionally swing by Los Angeles, however most of my friends are not seafood lovers. Fortunately, I was able to convert my girlfriend. Anyways, we were at a small art gallery showing in Eagle Rock, so we decided to see if Watergrill had any reservation availability. Luck be it that they had availability at 7:45 (it was 7 pm when I checked). Made the reservation and booked it there. Some light traffic, but still made it a few minutes early. They had our table ready and the rest was history...because we devoured it."

  • "If you find yourself in downtown LA (financial/legal district) and looking for some fresh seafood, this is the place. They have a variety platter that includes a few types of fresh clams, oysters, and scallops, and cooked and chilled shrimp and muscles. Plenty of food and plenty good. The rest of the menu provided a wide choice of fish and shellfish. For wine-lovers there is an impresseive wine list. And they have several excellent draft beers. The atmosphere I would describe as "sophisticated seaside." Give it a try."

  • "Thanks to the Water Grill for always making special occasions all the more special! Food is so well prepared; atmosphere is very special; always a delightful experience to bring friends and family to dine at the Water Grill. This time I brought cousins from Massachusetts with a fine palate; last year they invited me to join them at Alinea in Chicago. They were very impressed with the Water Grill"

  • "My experience was very poor because of the service. I explicitly asked for some side vegatables that would be fresh and non-oily and the waiter substituted cauliflower but it was cooked in oil with lots of spice. The waiter also kept aggressively clearing plates and did not wait for people to finish. The main dish was seafood but again it had lots of butter and was very rich but the waiter didn't indicate that at the time of ordering."

  • "This was our second dinner dining at DT Water Grill in 2 months. We ordered the same deluxe seafood platter and entrees. The seafood platter was not as fresh as last time and the jumbo shrimps were overcooked. Also, the sea bass entree was over cooked. We expected food quality consistency when paying $200 plus for 3 people."

  • "The Water Grill still knows how to prepare seafood. For its prices, however, I would expect a different dining experience (for example, a table cloth). We used to visit on every trip to LA as a special occasion; the ambience was perfect. Now, the ambience is that of a sports bar (flat-screen TVs playing constantly in the background). The table in our booth could have used a scrub. The seafood mains were excellent; the other courses (salads and especially desserts) were mediocre at best. I doubt that we will be back: there are many more exciting dining options in downtown LA these days."
