Diner Reviews
  • "Great food. But need to work on reducing wait time"

  • "We had not been to Washington Place before. The menu was interesting and we had a relaxing meal. The service was excellent."

  • "I made an 8pm reservation for myself and my special lady friend to take advantage of the 2 for $40 Wednesday night deal (shared appetizer, two entrees and a bottle of wine for $40). We were able to get a seat outside on the patio, which was perfect for the evening. The food was great (even better based on the price of the deal). I enjoyed the pot roast, which I highly recommend. Michael, our server, was attentive and responsive. Overall a great evening!"

  • "Enjoyed a nice relaxed evening and good food on a lovely patio. A neighborhood gem!"

  • "Often heard about, but never tried this restaurant. However, we will visit here again. While their selection is limited, the choices offered a variety to suit everyone and will not disappoint. We chose to dine outside on this pleasurable evening. While the restaurant did not seem to be at capacity, the service (at least on the patio) was a bit slow."

  • "The menu is nearly all meet. There was one non-meat entree - Mac and cheese. The steaks were good but the potatoes were a little greasy. Prices were a little high for what you got. The drinks were good. This is a place for weddings, graduation meals, and meat lovers. The service was good."

  • "Everything was wonderful as expected. My out of town guests are from New York and they love the wine list and dinner. I cannot express how important it is that at the tables you can hear the wonderful jazz but still have a conversation without shouting. This is one of the top of my list for Cleveland Restaurants."

  • "Our last visit to Washington Place was about a year back. At the time it was recommended to try as a gluten-free friendly restaurant. At the time they did not have g-f bread or g-f beer but they were talking about adding both. A year later, they are still talking about it. But, both of our visits did not disappoint in terms of menu options, presentation, and flavor. Our meals were well received - both the Pot Roast (not g-f) and the Duck Risotto (yes, g-f) were well made and enjoyed. Our server could not have been more gracious and someone ran out to provide gluten-free crackers for me and a replacement dressing was provided for my salad. The kitchen was receptive to creating a g-f option from any protein and a selection of sides."

  • "I love the small rooms. Very cozy and nice. Not noisy like so many places these days."

  • "food was nicely presented but we specified not to overcook fish and meat...and both were. didn't have time to re-prepare so ate it and were comped dessert. would give another try but somewhat disappointing on a beautiful evening sitting outdoors."

  • "We enjoyed a last minute dinner reservation as our first experience and were very pleasantly surprised. We were given the option of several different tables and found one in a quiet room overlooking the garden. Our server Lisa arrived promptly and did a fantastic job checking on us at the perfect intervals throughout the evening. All of the food we ordered was delicious. The Shrimp and Grits is available as a small plate and is perfect to share as an appetizer. The hanger steak entree arrived perfectly prepared and was one of the tastiest steaks I have ever enjoyed in a restaurant. Save room for dessert - the espresso brownie with salted caramel ice cream is an amazing ending to a beautiful night out. We loved the free valet parking!"

    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "Everything was spot on. From the great service by Lisa to the excellent specials and great items on the menu. One of us had the pork chop special, another had the chicken with artichokes and I had the meat loaf which was fantastic. Our forth just had the beet salad which was just great for her. Two of us had the cauliflower bisque......... Fantastic!"

  • "We enjoy the restaurant, but they seem to be UNDERSTAFFED. Table is never properly bussed by the arrival of the oncoming course and drinks take way too long. Food is consistently good, but not served consistently hot."

  • "Needing to have a serious conversation among friends, we asked our host at Washington Place for a quiet, private environment that would allow us to talk things over and enjoy a great meal at the same time. The environment was perfect and the food was excellent - the conversation was productive and we enjoyed some laughs, as well. We will be back!"

  • "We tried Washington Place for the first time last Saturday night and it was perfect. Arthur, our waiter, was wonderful in all respects; very attentive to every detail. The cornmeal dusted calamari is by far the best version of this dish we'ver ever had. I had the hangar steak, which was cooked perfectly and was also the most flavorful of its type that ive ever had. Others had the prosciutto wrapped chicken which was excellent, and the scallops which were also excellent. We topped the meal off with their version of an ice cream sundae that was delicious and perfect for the 4 of us to share. We recommend this restaurant very highly and look forward to our next trip back."

  • "I decided to come here after watching the episode on Unique Eats on the food channel. It seemed like upscale comfort food..so we were very excited. Everything we ordered was disappointing. Didn't like the mixed drinks or even the soda on the menu. We ordered the mac and cheese and meatloaf (both showcased on the show). The meat loaf was pale and the tomato gravy tasted like canned tomatoe soup. Dry mashed potatoes. The mac and cheese was a similar let down. It just tasted like oil from the chorizo- tasteless. beet salad which was the best thing we ordered. Asian bbq wings- just an overly salty teriyaki sauce. Ouneighbor ordered the pork loin..This thing was so small, pale,n glaze. I think the chefs just are lazy about their food."

  • "Washington Place Bistro was the perfect setting to take my friend, a retired professor, to brunch as a celebration of his 77th birthday. We enjoyed the light and the view through the window of the covered porch. Service was prompt and the food was delicious. My friend was delighted and everything was first class all the way!"

  • "Washington Place is a wonderful oasis of a restaurant in University Circle. The food, service and ambience was outstanding. We sat outside and thoroughly enjoyed the secluded experience of the unique patio and garden area. We would highly recommend this restaurant to others interested in a high quality dining experience. We will be back."

  • "With a broken ankle we called to see if Washington Place is handicap accessible. The person who answered the phone assured us it was, despite my memory of the historic building being 5 or 6 steps up. It isn't! Fortunately, it was a beautiful summer night and the staff could not have been more helpful and we were able to get back to the lovely patio where we had a nice dinner. The service was excellent and food was good. I found the beet salad to be delicate- in fact so delicate that there were almost no beets! But what was there was tasty. We also had the cauliflower bisque which is a favorite. The flavor was good but it was quite thin. My husband lived the meatloaf. we still Like Washington Place and will return when not on crutches!"

  • "This was my second time coming here. The food couldn't be better. The service is great too. Our waitress was friendly did not make us feel rushed at all. They aren't constantly checking in for this or that, yet you always have a full drink, your food, etc. Just a great place. Keep it up."

  • "Our group of 6 had a room to ourselves. My husband had to ask if his soup was still being made, took forever to get his wine refilled, my steak was flavorful, but chewy. We all enjoyed ourselves, just a little disappointed in our service. We have been to Washington place before and absolutely loved it!"

  • "The shrimp and grits continues to be one of my favorite dishes in the Cleveland area. The pork shank was also excellent and the brownie w/sea salt caramel ice cream was delicious."

  • "Awesome staff, very friendly. Food was great, but portions varied....huge bowl of Mack and Cheese, but only a few pieces of pasta with the scallops. "

  • "We had a wonderful evening at Washington Place with our only problem being the bar service. The bartender was slammed with people wanting drinks at the bar and filling orders for waitresses. It seemed they were short staffed in that department. Otherwise we had a delicious meal in a beautiful setting with lots of things on the menu that I can't wait to go back and try."

  • "We had met 25 years to this date and looked for a special place to go out for dinner. Washington Place did not let us down. The valet set the tone! The bar was quaint, the service was second to none, the pirogi appetizer was exceptional. The wedding soup was perfect along with the beet salad. My wife had special requests on the salad and this was done to her request. We had the vegetarian past and the salmon. The pasta was what my wife wanted and the salmon was grilled just perfectly. The edges had that crispness without one part of the salmon being dry. (Please teach me how to do this!) The vegetables served with the salmon were a perfect compliment. We did not have desert this time but will the next. We will be back!"

  • "Washington Place is an old mansion w/ a several smallish dining areas. While the enclosed porch looked festive and energetic, we were seated in an almost empty dining room. Felt like we were in the annex. The server was friendly and accommodating but the service was slow. We should have waited for a table on the porch. "
