A word from Washington Inn
Built in 1840, this former Cape May plantation residence is now home to the acclaimed Washington Inn and Wine Bar. The Craig Family has carefully preserved the beauty & essence of this distinctive treasure without undertaking major alterations to its original form. The Inns welcoming facade overlooks tree-lined Washington Street in the seaside communitys Historic District. The Washington Inn offers six unique dining areas, from a summer patio to cozy fireside tables. Cocktails are a must in the Wine Bar, where the passing Cape May scene can be best appreciated. Often described as romantic, our easy-going elegance will satisfy anyones craving for fine dining. Our enticing menu offers the best of American cuisine, but with an inventive, upscale edge. Food, Service, Ambiance, the essential ingredients for dining excellence, are all deftly blended here at The Washington Inn. We are what "eating out" used to be -- before it became hurried, incorporated & unimaginative Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Our experience at the Washington Inn, on Easter Sunday, was fabulous! Godfrey, our waiter was so friendly and accommodating that he made the experience that much more pleasurable. ALL of the food on the Brunch Buffet was excellent. Beginning with the cold salads, fresh bagels & lox, muffins and pastries; to the breakfast and luncheon items (all were excellent) and on to the delicious desserts (also excellent, especially the key lime pie and the white chocolate bread pudding!) I would highly recommend the Washington Inn!"

  • "The Easter Brunch was very poor. Not organized well. Food was not at proper temps. Customers touched plates than put them back in the pile. Had to walk thru lobby with plates of food. Reserv. was for 12:45 and not seated until 1:30. Would never attend this function again at the Inn. "

  • "We have been to the Washington Inn several times for dinner and it has always been excellent. Easter brunch was no exception. We were 4 adults. We were escorted into the enclosed porch area (lovely setting). Buffet was excellent - even at the end of the brunch time (about 3PM) there was plenty of food, a terrific selection, and the wait servers were extremely accommodating. Even the coffee was delicious (sometimes not the case with even the best restaurants). We were not rushed at all. The Washington Inn is a first class establishment and it scored again on Easter Sunday. "

  • "My husband and I had Easter brunch with you last Sunday. It was very nice and we were very happy that we had tried the Washington Inn (we had never been there before). The staff was outstanding. Very attentive and polite. The food was great and your fruit and dessert table was to die for. The only thing that we were put off by was that the price didn't include nonalcoholic beverages. You had to pay extra for even a cup of coffee! That was quite a surprise. I was fully prepared to pay extra for cocktails but I have been to many brunches and regular drinks are always included in the price. Please consider changing your policy. Thank you."

  • "Very, very good. But not the best I've experienced. Perfect place for, relaxed dining in Cape May. The service might be a tad rushed but if that's your style, then consider it another plus."

  • "Washington Inn is a restaurant we have always wanted to try.. We are local and just never had the opportunity ..we had received a gift card which forced us to go and we absolutely loved it !! My husband had the crab cake entree and I had Cordova ( white fish ) which was a special recommended by our waiter Sean ...I rarely finish my dinner but I did that night ! We will defiantly be returning there .."

  • "We have dined here many times. Consistently good. It is a bit noisy in the garden room where we ate, and the chairs are very low to the table height but our food was delicious and service great!"

  • "The menu is limited, the wine list is even more limited (wines by the bottle from Cape May Winery only), but the food and service are fantastic. It is a quiet, elegant, romantic atmosphere."

  • "Excellent dining experience, great wine, great food & service. Only issue was that we were seated next to the window & some black ants made their appearance on the window sill."

  • "Great friendly service. Bread basket is awesome. Cioppino: highly recommended."

  • "Husband and I enjoyed a couple of drinks at their bar before dinner. Both had and appetizer and entree. Everything was enjoyable."

  • "Disappointed in the lack of selection of entrees. Fish special had a lot of bones. Cavatelli appetizer was too spicy. Bartenders were superb. Service on a slow night was lacking. I understood this to be the first Friday that the restaurant was open this season. I will try again later in the season. My experiences last year were excellent."

  • "Food is good and service is excellent. You are not rushed through your dinner. Restaurant was flexible with changing our reservation for an earlier time due to weather. Would go back."

  • "We always make a point of dining at the Washington Inn when we are in Cape May. The food is superb, and the wait staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I had an amazingly tender and flavorful grilled Spanish octopus with guacamole followed by a sumptuous dish of cioppino, a tomato-based seafood stew with fish, shrimp, scallops, and clams--all perfectly fresh and expertly cooked. My husband had a delicious swordfish entree. Our waitress helped us pick wines that complemented the food beautifully. This is a great place to celebrate a special occasion or to rekindle romance--or just to enjoy a terrific meal."

  • "We were given a corner table in a porch area right off of the bar. One cushioned seat was much lower than the other seats in that section, but we laughed and made the best of it. As a large number of people gathered in the bar, going to or coming from a private party on a lower level, the noise became unbearable. My husband and I could not even hear each other as we ate our first course. As the noise escalated, I went to the hostess desk and requested another table. We were given another table after our main courses were served. Apparently, there were multiple tables available in the quieter areas. This not the elegant dining experience that one would expect at the Washington Inn. I am so disappointed."

  • "Gorgeous restaurant, brilliant food and personable service, but the pacing was off. We were looking forward to a leisurely dinner (7p.m. booking) and everything came to the table so quickly (first course was whisked and second put right on the table) that we felt rushed. They weren't that busy, so I don't understand this....felt like they wanted everyone to eat up and get out."

  • "The Washington Inn is THE place to dine for a special occasion. It is one of the few places where you can still feel comfortable getting dressed in a nice jacket and a special dress to enjoy a special event. But if you prefer a little more casual the bar area is classy and comfortable, especially on 5 for Friday."

  • "This place has been around for quite a while - and even though it's open during the winter for limited evenings, it IS open! .... You can count on a wonderful wine list and a delicious meal - fresh, creative without being 'precious' - with lots of attention given to the entree accompaniments....."

  • "Food was great, service was excellent. All over a great dining experience. Only thing I would suggest is the lighting. Very romantic but was a little tough reading the menu without the light from our cellphone (lol). Wine was chosen from a tablet which was unique. Since it supplies its own light source the wine pick was a breeze."

  • "Washington Inn has long been hailed as one of the best restaurants in Cape May. This time was a disappointment. Food was mediocre at best. Steak underdone, Fish on the cool side and sauces could have been better. Potatoes on dishes were cold. On the bright side, the service was very good but we would pick another restaurant in Cape May for our next special occasion."

  • "We hadn't eaten at the Washington Inn in a few years, and were disappointed that the menu is now so limited. We both had crab cakes and they were excellent, but unless the menu changes, we won't be back any time soon because there is nothing else on the menu that we would like to order."

  • "We made our first trip to Cape May NJ for Valentine's Day, and we had a wonderful dinner at the Washington Inn. The wine list is fantastic, and the use of an iPad to present the wines is a very nice touch. Food and service were all very good and we will definitely return."

  • "Valentine's day 2014. We were seated by the fireplace which was perfect and very romantic. Joe had oysters that he is still raving about while I boast of the Winter green salad. Main course were sirloin for him and veal porterhouse for me. Excellent taste, quality and presentation. The staff was extremely friendly and genuinely so. The only reason I gave this a 4 star instead of a 5 is because it is not handicapped friendly. I have MS and there are stairs to get in which weren't too bad but the restrooms are up a flight of stairs as well and it was a chore for me. The other thing is we were seated next to the kitchen. Need I say more? LOL Overall - don't miss out on this fabulous food and service experience."

We have also done the Mother's Day brunch also. We will recommended this restaurant to everyone and will continue to come here. Thank you to the Chefs, Waitress & all the hostesses! Well done!!!"

  • "Been looking forward to this place and it did not disappoint. Salad before dinner was probably the best I ever had. Sea bass was tasteful, though not my cup of tea. Others in my family had the lamb, which was a ten on the ten point scale. The butternut squash soup was a nine out of ten and as was the crab cake. Desserts were well done (banana foster and creme brulee), eight out of ten for those. We will return asap."

  • "Sadly, we had to wait beyond our reservation time. We waited in a packed foyer with the door opening and closing with cold air coming in, the waiter spoke way to much- repeated everything on the menu and overusing the word- AMAZING before each sentence. The Tower was not available."
