Built in 1840, this former Cape May plantation residence is now home to the acclaimed Washington Inn and Wine Bar. The Craig Family has carefully preserved the beauty & essence of this distinctive treasure without undertaking major alterations to its original form. The Inns welcoming facade overlooks tree-lined Washington Street in the seaside communitys Historic District. The Washington Inn offers six unique dining areas, from a summer patio to cozy fireside tables. Cocktails are a must in the Wine Bar, where the passing Cape May scene can be best appreciated. Often described as romantic, our easy-going elegance will satisfy anyones craving for fine dining. Our enticing menu offers the best of American cuisine, but with an inventive, upscale edge. Food, Service, Ambiance, the essential ingredients for dining excellence, are all deftly blended here at The Washington Inn. We are what "eating out" used to be -- before it became hurried, incorporated & unimaginative Continued

  • "If you are in Cape May this is a must! Never a disappointment!"

  • "We've been going to this spot for 25+ years but hadn't been in a while. They have redone the bar and it has a fun, updated vibe as a wine bar. Dinner on the porch was wonderful and our server was very attentive. The prices have gone up quite a bit, but we were celebrating a special occasion and it was worth it. The WI is still a winner!"

  • "In Cape May ..... its the best. Bar none. Mature and knowledgeable wait staff. excellent menu that does change from time to time for added variety. Good wine list to suit any taste. If you are going to CM for the week its is a must. If you want a whole cooked lobster, head to the Lobster House, which we love. This place is for the novice and serious diner. Its not 410 Bank which is also good, it is WAY better and more relaxed than PSI. Forget the Union. If you are looking for a the best dining experience in Cape May ... Washington Inn is your best bet."

  • "Our first visit to the Washington Inn was a great experience...the food was outstanding as was the service..The historic Inn was a combination of old world charm with a fresh , modern look to it...This will be a definite stop on our next visit to Cape May."

  • "Best dining experience of the week. Excellent service and everything was perfect. One if the few places that is worth the money."

  • "Arrived a few minutes early so checked in and went to the bar. My wife ordered a drink and it was awful so she gave it back to the bartender and ordered a Cosmo to be safe. Bartender charged me for both. Most nice restaurants will gladly exchange a drink if you don't like what you order. Get seated at our table and my wife mentions the drink issue to the hostess and says she will look into it but she never returns. Our waiter said he'd bring bread which we finally got right before the food comes out. I ordered cape may salts as an appetizer which were awesome. I ordered salmon as my entre which came out cold. My wife had crab cakes which she said were very good. Overall, we won't go back. Ebitts is MUCH better and reliable!!"

  • "We had not been to the Washington Inn for several years and will return sooner in the future. We had a very nice and quiet window side table. We had a very good server who clearly explained the specials and answered any questions we had on the menu. The crab cake appetizer and romaine salad were very good. Out filet and duck were cooked as requested and very good. The valet parking was convenient and quick. Overall, a very pleasant evening."

  • "Hadn't eaten here in years! Was pleasantly surprised. Food was excellent. Service was good. Many restaurants in Cape May are BYOB. They do have an extensive wine list here, but if you BYO - they charge a $20 corking fee. The other high end restaurants in the area that I have been to don't. Overall though a great experience"

  • "Charming atmosphere, excellent service, app size too small, tasteless soup ($8 !!!!), entrees just ok, but extremely overpriced. Total Cost for 3 seniors was $270 and never told they have an early bird special !!! Not listed on website. Overall just an ok experience and won't go back."

  • "The waiter was very helpful with his recommendations. We enjoyed the selections on the wine flight. It allowed us to try more than one from the numerous choices. The food was excellent and with the waiters help we were very satisfied"

  • "Cape May is blessed with a large number of gourmet restaurants, but the Washington Inn is, and has been for as long as I can remember (which goes back about 25 yrs.) the best of the best. Several years ago they added an "early bird/dinner show" menu which reflects the same regular-menu quality and makes Washington Inn affordable to everyone. The food, service and atmosphere is outstanding. It is a do-not-miss if you are visiting Cape May."

  • "The Washington Inn is a gem in Cape May. Jimmy was our waiter who was a laid back funny guy who made the experience wonderful. It was quiet and romantic and the food was perfect. it came out hot, perfectly cooked with a beautiful presentation. Our waiter made a few mistakes but quick fixed them and comped our drinks and dessert. The bar staff was very knowledgeable and took great care of us."

  • "Excellent waiter, service was fantastic. Did not have a long wait between servings. I had the duck and my wife had salmon, both were prepared to perfection."

  • "My wife and I had a great time here for our anniversary. The food and service were fantastic. The only draw back was a crying baby that cried during our entire dinner (not the resturants fault). Not a place to bring small children."

  • "My husband and I have been to the Washington Inn twice now and each time is a better experience. The goat cheese crouton is sinfully delicious and one of the best foods that I've ever eaten. We have recommended to many friends and all agree that the Washington Inn is one of Cape May's best dining experiences!!!!"

  • "We have eaten at your restaurant for over 12 years when we are in Cape May on vacation and look forward to it each year. This is the first time that we were very disappointed. We were seated at a very cramped corner table. There was a fly in the room. The service was fair. Waiter never returned to check on appetizers. We mainly had others deliver meals etc not our server. The food was fair at best. My son's shrimp appetizer was luke warm. My husband's tuna steak was overcooked. Since we had children with us decided not to ask for another meal since it appeared it would take a long time. Meal was disappointing enough that we would consider not returning next year."

  • "Overall experience was fantastic. James and Rachel provided top level service. The crab cakes and pork chop were exceptional. Valet parking made it very convenient and stress-free looking for a parking spot."

  • "We visited the Washington Inn during our holiday in Cape May for our 11-y wedding anniversary. Our waitress Tina was very friendly and really made an effort to help me get pregnancy-proof items (too often waiters don't know or will just say something). The food was really tasty, well made up on the plates and had good texture. We were almost too stuffed for dessert, so we decided to share. Good that we did end up taking dessert, because we were surprised with a candle and a happy anniversary text on our dessert plate! I've added details before on OpenTable about birthdays and anniversaries, but it was never taken up by the restaurant, so this was a real nice and pleasant surprise. We had a great night and really enjoyed the food!"

  • "I only get to Cape May once or twice per year, and have wanted to dine at the Washington Inn for years. This week I got that chance, and it was worth the wait. It was more casual than I had expected - maybe because it's summer and the tourist crowd is on vacation. Everyone I could see looked fine, though the folks in shorts surprised me. But it was not a deterrent and I did not feel out of place in my pretty dress and high heels. The food was beautifully presented and delicious! I selected a goat cheese appetizer with fig and nuts that was great. Entree was a decent size piece of salmon served with pureed parsnips and spinach. Mmmmmm! Hubby had the special grass-fed steak that he said was like butter. We will surely return."

  • "As always, the food and service at the Washington Inn were excellent. My wife and I enjoy getting dressed up and going to the Inn for a special dinner. This occasion was Father's Day. I had their signature pork chop which was outstanding but closely approached the limit of my capacity. My wife was just as happy with her seafood medley."

  • "WASHINGTON INN WAS TERRIFIC! IN TOWN VISITING WITH GOOD FRIENDS A SIMPLY GREAT DINING EXPERIENCE. A SIGNATURE RESTURANT -ALWAYS A GUARENTEE YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."

  • "This was our second visit to this resturant in the past few years. Our first experience was very good. Our visit this past Friday night was a disappointment . Our waiter blew it as far as we are concerned. He was not as attentive and did not offer us the nightly specials we found our after overhearing him tell another table. I settled for the filet mignon and my wife had fish...it was just ok..we came here expecting a great meal and experience."

  • "My boyfriend almost cried over the food he thought it was so good. He got the swordfish if you were wondering! We stopped at the bar first, those guys are so good and so nice! One even remembered me from a year ago! Now they have wine flights, and they a good two swuigs per glass of the flight. I suggest starting there and then choosing the wine you like the best to drink with dinner. It's NOT inexpensive! So be ready to spend, but worth the money which is always nice. My steak was just steak, but yummy none the less. And the desserts! WOWZA! It will be a yearly visit every time we go down if I had to guess!"

  • "We were seated downstairs in the wine cellar. It was quiet and service was very good. My husband ordered the lamb, and it was excellent. I, however, ordered the duck breast. The skin was not crisp, it was covered with the sauce, and the meat was a little chewy. Oh well..."

  • "We have been coming to the Washington Inn for several years now and have never been disappointed. Food Quality and Service have always been at the highest standards. In addition to being a place for special occasions, additional seating in the porch and bar area provide a more informal opportunity to enjoy the same great food, wine and service. If you have not had the braised Lamb & Cavatelli with Broccoli Rabe, your missing out - we'll be back just for that!"

  • "Food is excellent but being the most well known fine dining establishment in Cape May, be prepared to pay a premium (eg: $90 lobster tail). For a special occasion however it is well worth it."

  • "As always, The Washington Inn lived up to our expectations for a wonderful evening out. From the moment of our arrival, we were treated to outstanding hospitality. The bartenders, Charles and Marty, were friendly and knowledgable, as was our waiter. The meal was fantastic, complimented by the atmosphere of the wine cellar."

  • "Loved this restaurant. Had special meaning for my sister, cousin's and I. Our mothers worked at the Washington Inn, mid to late 40's. My mother passed on 12/12/13, my Aunt passed in May 2014. It was so nice to eat at the restaurant we heard so much about from our mom's. They loved their job and Cape May. The food was excellent, my only complaint was with our Waiter. He appeared to be hurried and was not attentive. His helper, a sweet young girl was. We also had the pleasure of speaking to Marty (bar tender) what a true delight!"

  • "Celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary with dinner at the Washington Inn. Excellent food combined with excellent, professional, and friendly service. Try the wine flights. You get 3 - 2 oz pours for $12. Great way to try different wines with your meal. What a great dinner and evening!"

  • "This is a special place for a special Saturday evening. The bartender made us delicious, generous martinis. Our reservation was called right on time. We got a special table that we asked for, and the service was very attentive. We really appreciated the delicious meals. We could tell they were prepared by experts. This was our first experience, but we will return when we have the opportunity."

  • "Upscale seashore dining. Very pricey for the quality. We had soft shell crabs, which were very good, not outstanding, and the pork chop that they are famous for. It was very nicely done... maybe brined first to keep all that moisture in? It's so easy to overcook pork and they did a great job of keeping it juicy. I was pleased to be able to order Cape May Salts (local oysters). We ordered wine by the glass... a Pouilly-Fuissé which was crisp and cold ($13 a glass). We shared bites of things so we know that the all-time favorite for all of us was a appetizer: Order the Braised Lamb & Cavatelli--it was really wonderful! Our waiter was very attentive and the service very professional. Lots of older folks, navy blue blazers, & neckties here."
