A word from Walnut Creek Yacht Club
Ellen McCarty and Kevin Weinberg opened the Walnut Creek Yacht Club in May of 1997 with the mission of bringing the finest and freshest from the sea to Walnut Creek. Why do we call ourselves a yacht club? Because we want to bring the atmosphere of a day on the Bay to landlocked Walnut Creek. We want our guests to feel comfortable, relaxed, and welcomed. Our décor includes many beautiful nautical touches: teak, mahogany, stainless steel, and even an authentic jib which was a gift to Kevin from the America’s Cup Defender, Alinghi. In January of 2008 we completed an extensive remodel, expanding the restaurant by twenty-five percent, and adding an oyster bar. We have been voted Best Seafood Restaurant in the East Bay by Diablo Magazine for the last 11 years, and have won numerous other awards, including Best Chef, Best Bartender, and Best Sommelier. We have a full bar, and a Wine Spectator Award winning wine list.

We had a flat tire, and ended up being an hour late for our reservation. They were very accomodating, and we were extremely appreciative. We sat inside, and it was very noisy. In previous visits we were in the outside area, which seemed to be quieter. We had a very nice meal.

Normally, this is a great place for seafood. In fact one of the best. This particular evening was a July 4th Lobster Feed celebration. Pre fixed menu and pricing. Too loud, food was nondescript, the lobster was tough and we didn't get the table we wanted. I wouldn't attend that event again but will continue to make reservations any other time of the year. They haven't lost me.

  • I give the owners credit for
    OpenTable Diner Since 2003
    Dined on 6/7/2008
I give the owners credit for the atmosphere, which is breezy, upscale and fun, with lots of nauticul touches -- the flags, and cool drawings of whales turning into ships and salt and pepper shakers with ship propeller tops. Many of the older male clientle wore Hawaiin shirts. Perhaps it's the state of mind you are put in. But the food is mediocre. The calamari was soggy and undercooked, the grilled halibut dry, and they mixed up my mussels and clams order, charging me for the combo but only giving me clams (of which, 6 were almost unopened). My husband didn't like his grilled fish -- way too dry. My parents seemed to enjoy the gumbo and the swordfish they ordered, but perhaps they were being polite since we were treating them.

  • It seemed to take too long
    PumaIII
    Dined on 6/6/2008
It seemed to take too long to serve requested cocktails. Overall, food was very good with the oysters on the half shell very chilled, fresh and firm. Service was reasonable and the server seemed knowledgeable about the wine we chose. One disappointment was the order of grilled scallops. For $24, it seemed like there weren't very many. Some had been split in half horizontally and others not. We found out from our server that they had run out of scallops and cut them that way to extend the appearance of a normal serving. They were excellent, but we should have been told in advance that there were not enough scallops instead of "shorting us" on the $24 serving. That seemed unprofessional.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 5/31/2008
Small, unimaginative outdoor seating, was the only place to sit and enjoy a dinner conversation. Though the fish is outstanding, the noise level in the main dinner room is absolutely awful. We were retrying this resturant after having a similar experience several years ago. The remodel did not address the noise issue. Too bad. We love the fresh fish but won't be going back. PS: Thanks for the survey.

I have walked by the restaurant a million times, but never went inside. The food was excellent...the service was fantastic! We realy had a nice time. It's very noisy in there, so if that bothers you, you need to ask to sit towards the back. We sat in the front and it was so much fun! Again, great fish...great salads...fantastic drinks!!!

  • My primary reason for going
    OpenTable Diner Since 2002
    Dined on 5/26/2008
My primary reason for going is raw clams on the halfshell. Oysters are everywhere, but the clams are getting harder to find. You used to offer more than one variety, though. Recommendations: 1) although you are generous with the bread, you treat the butter as if it was expensive caviar! The ONE tiny container would be fine if you provided one to each person, but that ONE little thing for the table of 3 people??? 2) Provision should be made (or at least offered) for keeping the white wine chilled throughout the meal.

The noise level is very high, but we knew that going in. Was hoping the new addition would make for quieter dining, but we were too close to the bar. Next time we'll specify the new room.

We have been here many times and appreciate the consistent high quality of the food. The seafood is consisently fresh and perfectly prepared--never overcooked. We very much appreciate the new back section which is at least away from the bar. As diners, rather than drinkers, we would welcome an even greater noise barrier. It is practically impossible to have a conversation given the loud noise from the bar, and this was on a Thursday night. We never come on the week-ends because it's just too noisy. Aside from some outstanding sushi places in the area, this is the only restaurant with truly fresh seafood, properly prepared despite whatever claims Yankee Pier makes. But-the raucous bar scene really takes away from our dining experience.
