Having dined at wallse before i
took a friend for dinner. The hostess was nice, the table was nice. The waiter did not know the wines. My order was taken after waiting for 20 minutes, and only after i grabbed the waiter by the sleeve. The wine was fabulous once the correct bottle was served. The oysters were warm, and a fork was only provided on request. The meal (venison goulash, salmon) was excellent. Desert (apple strudel) was very good as well. Service was sluggish and inattentive throughout, even after complaining to the maitre d'. This used to be my favorite restaurant, but i felt embarassed in front of my friend."

I was my birthday and Wallse staff
gave us the best table in the restaurant. Everyone was kind and helpful and made sure I spending a lovely night."
Dined on 2/20/2014
Food is good and creative, but we
felt confined by the fact that on 2/15 we were still bound to choose a Valentine's tasting menu. I amnot convinced bythe choices of wine; personally, while I would drink a white wine from Austria, I would much rather choose one from italy, SPain or France, which have a much smaller representation in Wassle's wine menu, but also are on average more than what we wnated to spend on wine. We ended up drinking cocktails and beer ..."

Fantastic Austrian food and a
great wine list...service was spot on as well."
Dined on 2/9/2014
Wallsé comes with a lot of
pretensions, eg. reservations only with a cc, although pretty much empty on the night of 2/2/14 because of the Superbowl. That says something about the clientele. The maitre d' insisted my wife check her coat, saying that they don't want them on the backs of dining chairs. This stupid tug of war end when I noticed that the only other party in the restaurant had already violated the 'rule'. Service was excellent, reasonable & interesting wine list. Food dull & ordinary, correct but under-seasoned. Can you spare more than teaspoon of lingonberries? A grubby-looking guy sat drinking at the bar and stared at the guests. It was artist Juilan Schnabel, the chef-owner's pal, whose underwhelming work adorns the walls."

We found the restaurant reasonably
quiet and servers very helpful. The bar gave us a few drinks they did not have on the menu and had good selection in general (!). Overall experience was very good to excellent. The food however I found not very impressive: we ordered the tasting menu and the dinner ended up costing $160 a head, I did not feel that was worth the money. The food to me is Zagat rating 22-24 and nothing special or exquisite. Even out of Austrian restaurants I have been to, I would not call this one the best. If you lower your expectation about food, everything else is fine :)"
Dined on 2/2/2014
We have been to Wallse several
times. This time, we were really disappointed. The food is good, but it isn't great, in spite of a 26! rating from Zagat. The dishes just don't seem to "come together." For example, I had sweetbreads served in a red wine sauce with baby carrots, brusell sprouts and cippoline onion. The carrots were tough (so were my husband's), the sprouts were just individual leaves with little flavor, and the onion just sat there -- its role in the dish a mystery. Wines are interesting, because so many are from Austria. Service is very helpful. The décor is dominated by a huge, I mean huge portrait of the chef on one wall. Are they kidding?"

We were tempted with the tasting
menu, it’s very extensive, however, we chose the regular menu, having: Spatzle with Braised Rabbit and Chanterelle Mushrooms and Steak Tartare. The Steak Tartare was very good, but the Spatzle (a signature dish) was amazing, it’s a must have dish. We then had the Roasted Icelandic Cod and Mountain Brook Trout, both excellent. Both the appetizers and fish were good portion sizes. We finished with the Apple Strudel (light and delicate) and the Dark Chocolate Mousse, the perfect ending to a truly amazing dinner. The wines are outstanding as is the service – so friendly and helpful with recommendations. I highly recommend Wallse!!"

I love wallse. I have gone the
past three years for my birthday and will definitely be going again next year! Service is always incredible, the food is thoughtful and hearty, and the Austrian wine pairings are amazing! Seriously one of my faves"
Dined on 1/25/2014
We had a very good time there but
the crowd was on the mature side. At least it was quiet and warm enough to spend quality time and to be able to hear ourselves. Was desappointed that lamb pictured on the website was not offered on the menu that night..."
Dined on 1/16/2014
Wallse is pricey, but worth the
price. If you feel like having delicious contemporary european gourmet, this is the place to go. Great professional service (my water glass was never empty; dishes all presented with description), not too noisy, both romantic or simply a good place to dine with a friend or 3. Courses were a bit slow in coming, but we went for New Year's Eve and the place was packed, so I was just happy everything went smoothly."
Dined on 12/31/2013
We live in the neighborhood and
have been here many times for special occasions. We had the $85 tasting menu which turned out to be mediocre and not well prepared. The first course was described as oysters with tuna tartare which turned out to be 1 dried out oyster (muscle still connected to shell) with a fee cubes of tasteless tuna. When the sommelier/manager asked how everything was, I commented about the oyster. He became very defensive, arrogant and told me I was wrong - setting a negative tone for the rest of the meal. The other courses were bland and uninteresting. Otherwise service and ambiance were very good. At the prices they charge, one would expect higher quality food."
Dined on 1/3/2014
The tasting menu was well thought
out and portions were extremely generous. The quality of the food and service were both quite high. The tables in the back room where we sat were well spaced. A real gem of a restaurant."
Dined on 1/3/2014
We went here on a recommendation
of a friend for our Thanksgiving dinner. It was fantastic. The next time we go to NYC we plan on trying the restaurant's non-holiday menu! The chef came by and talked with us for a bit, too, which made it a very special Thanksgiving for us."
Dined on 11/28/2013
We decided to go for the tasting
meal -- and it took about 3 hours start to finish. We were seated and waited at least 15 minutes to be offered drinks. We ordered drinks and it was a good 1/2 hour until our order was taken. After we ordered, each dish arrived with 15 to 20 minute lags. The food was ok. Last time we ate here, it was extraordinary. Perhaps the holiday rush was too much for the kitchen. The serving staff were kind and apologetic. Not coming back."
Dined on 12/27/2013
My daughter and I were looking
forward to a delicious special dinner and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent (Schnitzel for one and venison for the other) and the service was friendly. We had a lovely dinner and I'd love to come back with my husband. Almost forgot to mention the spaetzle appetizer ... yummy!"
Dined on 12/23/2013
We had the Christmas Eve tasting
there with wine pairing. The service (with a smile) was wonderful -- and food was great! Loved the little wine bar waiting area next door (same owners)! Very nice meal! The only complaint was that it was too hot in the restaurant. We asked our waitress once and she reported that they turned the air down, but it did not help a whole lot. That was the only issue. Otherwise, we will definitely go back when we're in NYC again."
Dined on 12/24/2013
booked for 7 and my confirmation
email said 7 but when we got there they had it as 7:30, that was fine, we went to their wine bar next door (which was excellent) to wait, and wait, and wait, until they finally seated us at 8:15. We had the 4 course set menu with wine pairing, the first course was excellent, but from there it was a let down. The second wine was very much "on the turn" and the couple of sips that I did have left my stomach in a similar situation. 'the accompanying lobster had some parts over done and tough and other parts underdone. The main and desert were fine but nothing to write home about. Not the dining experience i was hoping for nor one I would return to"
Dined on 12/25/2013
Mr. Gutenbrunner never
disappoints. Wallsé presented a four-course dinner with a chestnut soup amuse bouche to start, then salmon with caviar, or fois gras on offer. I had perfect Wiener schnitzel while my wife loved the lobster with spätzle. Both the roasted Christmas goose and the venison were outstanding. For dessert we enjoyed Salzburger nockerl (with rumtopf) and chocolate tart with gingerbread ice cream. There is a fine collection of Austrian (and other) wines in the cellar. I also recommend Mr. Gutenbrunner's beautifully illustrated cookbook, Neue Cuisine. So far I've used his fantastic strudel recipe and I'm hoping it contains the secret to sublime schnitzel. New York is better for the restaurants Mr. Gutenbrunner has opened here."
Dined on 12/25/2013
The food was fabulous. Only
distraction was the presentation of the Christmas Goose. The tables are tight so we had advanced viewing of the beautifully presented goose.at our neighbors' table. When our entree arrived it looked like we had the scraps. I did not have one slice of the breast meat or a a recognizable piece of the leg. It tasted delicious and we did not send it back but did comment to the staff."
Dined on 12/25/2013
With an Austriocentric menu, one
can feel transported to Vienna based on the food. The ambience however is chic New York, with a highly diverse group of fellow diners from the hood and all over. Service is very good and attentive throughout the meal. Try the Wiener Schnitzel and fantastic potato/ cucumber salad, to die for. Desserts are the cardiologist's nightmare, and once finished, an amazing plate of cookies tops off the meal. Three of us left highly satisfied and all said we would return."
Dined on 12/21/2013
The food is truly excellent;
wonderful selection of fish in particular. But it was the wine that thrilled me. I know nothing about Austrian wines so we asked our very knowledgable and lovely server to guide us to some wines to accompany each course. We really enjoyed her selections and I'll be looking in the Austria section whenever I shop for wines. I should add that the cocktails were also quite fun and wonderful. The "Don Draper Bitter" in particular was an excellent choice: not at all sweet and a unique flavor profile that made for one of the best cocktails I've had in quite some time. I'll definitely return to Wallsé, and soon!"

Interesting take on traditional
Austrian food with a great wine list and superb service."
Dined on 12/5/2013
Had a great dinner with my
husband, the Venison was cooked to perfection. The service was pleasant. just a wonderful dining experience."
Dined on 12/3/2013
This year we wanted an easy option
instead of cooking a massive feast for two. So glad we chose Wallse. We arrived early and as busy as they were, they still were able to get us a table fairly quickly. The three course meal was superb and every bit the thanksgiving feast we hoped for. I'd recommend this place to any of my friends."
Dined on 11/28/2013
Went for the Prix Fixe
Thanksgiving menu, which I had last year as well. You get three choices for each of three courses, and everything we had was excellent, especially the turkey w/cranberry sauce. Juicy and flavorful, I wish it was on the menu all year long. Chestnut soup, which IS on the menu at other times, is worth the trip all on its own, one of the best dishes you'll ever eat. Place was jammed at 9:30, last reservations were for 10, so not exactly a secret. Prix Fixe was reasonable at $60, but the wine list had no double-digit bottles on it, kind of a pity because Wallse and sibling Blaue Gans are great places to be introduced to Austrian wines. We made due with wines by the glass and a cocktail, had a great time."
Dined on 11/28/2013
Exquisite food cooked to
perfection. A twist on the traditional thanksgiving dinner, every course was creatively crafted to bring out the best flavors of every ingredient. I can't wait to come back and taste the food Wallsé originally offers"
Dined on 11/28/2013
I love Wallsé and have for quite
some time. I've spent Christmas Eve there and many nights with my family—especially in chillier weather. The food is terrific—Austrian with flair—and the dining rooms are both a welcome respite from the more crowded/louder spaces in the area. The Schnabels on the wall and the contemporary menu keep the experience from feeling stuffy or old. It's definitely one of my go-to places to send out of towners looking to eat in the West Village."
Dined on 11/24/2013
Got sat at a table and then 5 mins
later told to move. No one filled up our water and asked about our food. An embrassment For a Michelin Star"
Dined on 11/20/2013
Throughout the meal (and we were
at the table for about 60 minutes total) we felt rushed and pressured to move from one dish to the next. We both tend to eat in upscale restaurants and based on the prices, Wallse is an upscale restaurant. Typically, in such restaurants, the service tends to be leisurely to allow the diners to savor the food. We have never encountered this type of rushed service in any restaurant of this caliber. . We both felt unwelcomed and this was especially unsettling since the room was mostly empty while we were there...We finally left earlier than we planned to leave because we felt the atmosphere was so disquieting and unpleasant. Despite the fact that the food is well prepared, we will never return..."
Dined on 11/16/2013
Frankly, a lot of restaurants
don't live up to the hype. This one was so beautiful in every way. The food was amazing. The prices were absolutely fair. The service was top notch. And the place was just so comfortable and cozy pretty. I definitely, obviously, put it on the "go back to" list. Most places I go to do not get on that list. Congratulations the Wallse' and thank you."
Dined on 11/10/2013
Venison was great. Goulash was
great. Wine list strong and terrific Williams eau de vie. The spaetzle is not typical, and we wished it was. I must say it was quite expensive, even for NY."

Great New York- Austrian cuisine
for critical diners! A small place require pre-planning!"
Dined on 11/9/2013
This is a gem of a place.
Beautiful, spare decor, quiet ambiance, excellent wines, artful presentation of wonderful dishes."
Dined on 11/7/2013
Excelllent cross-section of high
quality dishes and wine from Austria, great ambience, staff is very friendly and considerate. I invited a visiting Foodie, and she loved the great variety!"
Dined on 11/5/2013
I always love to come back to the
Wallsee. The atmosphere is calm, soothing, without ever being stuffy. And the food of course is wonderful, never had a bad moment there! I`ll be back!"
Dined on 9/15/2013
I have been going to Wallse since
it opened in former Black Sheep space. It has never failed to deliver. The food is always the star. but I think the staff has just the right formal informal feel too."
Dined on 10/13/2013
We are from Germany so not far
away from the wonderful Austria where the Schnitzel was born. This restaurant is a very good place for dining in European style only a bid noisy and may be too much fast service. Normally the waiter should wait until all guest are ready and than take the plate away but OK that is American style but for a Michelin Star restaurant may not the right way. The bar was excellent and we have had a great time."
Dined on 10/11/2013
Spatzel is amazing especially with
rabbit appetizer. Always love pumpkin oil salad!"
Dined on 10/6/2013
Wallse sits on a quiet corner in
the far west Village. Who knew that Viennese cuisine could be so light and minimalist."
