This is a favorite Saint Paul dining destination since 1975. The Restaurant is housed in the turn-of-the-century Dacotah Building which lies in the heart of the historic Cathedral Hill District. W.   • "If you intend to dine outside as I did, don't use Open Table. I expected to bring an out of town guest to dine on their patio with a reservation well in advance. The hostess was very rude stating that if you make an on-line reservation you need to call to confirm an outdoor table. We were seated inside with a view to the patio where there were 3 open tables the entire time we were there. The service was slow and inattentive. Food was mixed. My chicken was excellent. Two at our table ordered salmon. One serving was good, one was distinctly old/off. The chef is way too heavy handed with the salt all around. All in all a very disappointing night for a special occassion with an out of town guest."

  • "I read recent reviews before making our reservation to take a special client to WA Frost (Forepaughs is closed on Mondays) but decided to take a chance, not wanting to believe what others were saying. My mistake. The ambiance of WA Frost is never disappointing, such a beautiful venue, and our service was actually very good as well. But, while the flavor of my food was ok, I've never had to cut mahi mahi with a knife, and it was also cold. My husband was disappointed with the duck confit also. Neither of us complained as we didn't want to in front of our client (she said she liked her food but who knows), but we would have had she not been with us. It will take some convincing before I go back. Sorry, WA Frost."

  • "It was my first time there...my wife had been there 20 years ago....we went for the ambience and were very pleased. Wished we could've sat on the patio but the MN weather didn't allow that to happen. Our server, Michael, did a great job and offered excellent choices. We chose the Chef's Special, the Meat and Vegetarian option, and were delighted with the choices. And.....even though the portions seemed small by appearance we were pleasantly full when the meal was done. Our dining experience lasted over 2 hours and we will definitely go back."

  • "The food was good, but not as spectacular as in the past years. Very, very salty on main courses. The waiter was friendly, but slow especially toward the end of our visit. The main problem was the AC -- it became increasingly warm inside. Next time, we will definitely only reserve for the patio."

  • "Everyone knows that Frost's patio is the best in the Twin Cities. Food, too, is marvelous and well served; it's a pleasure to have waitstaff who know the menu as well as Frost's do. Only one question: WHY does WA Frost (at least 3 waitstaff on 3 recent occasions, and 1 phone respondent) continue to defend serving by-the-glass Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and other whites in *bowl-shaped* glasses fit for a rich Burgundy?"

  • "We went with a party of 7 and had a wonderful experience. The service, by Ryan, was perfect. He knew the menu in detail. He was professional and efficient. The wine list was posted on line and I ordered 2 bottles for the table upon arrival and they were presented quickly and were of very reasonable price. The appetizers were tasty and excellent. The chef's tasting menu was a fine a dining experience one could have in any high end restaurant. The menu choices ranged from house burgers to Limousin strip steaks to braised sheep neck to fine salmon fillet served hot or cold on a salad. There are an entire menu of fine cheeses which can be ordered as an entree, and, Ryan knew everything about each choice. This is a wonderful restaurant."

  • "We had a less then memorable experience at Frost's. Always considered a St Paul icon, my dreams have been dashed. Made a reservation a week ahead but had to wait in bar for a half hour until we were seated (only after we reminded them we were still in there). Only waitress interaction was to order and get our check. Nothing else. Menu so-so, food even more so-so and priced nearly the same as our drinks (hmm interesting). Seems to me all the eggs have been put into the patio basket-however so-so food is so-so food no matter where it is consumed. Out dated interiors scream 80's and any touch of old elegance has long since worn away. Time for a re-brand as well as a sincere recommitment to exceptional dining and customer service."

  • "We had a reservation for Father's Day on the patio and were seated immediately. Our waiter was one of the worst I have ever had. We repeatedly had to ask him the same questions, he had to leave to find out the answers and would never return. It went on and on. We waited to order for about 45 min., waited for our food at least 1 hr., waited to have him check flavors of ice cream TWICE and then waited for our check. He couldn't stay on task or remember a thing. The food was okay but the small portion of salmon, which was quite pricey, was ridiculous and not a full meal. We enjoyed the atmosphere but that was it. We won't be returning."

  • "We encountered the perfect combination of disastrous food, poor service, and noisy neighbors on this visit. After we had waited for more than hour since being seated and our food still hadn't arrived, we finally said something to our inattentive waitress who seemed to not have a clue though she had passed by us several times throughout our time there. Her sense of timing, hospitality, and service certainly didn't mesh with ours. In fairness, our order wasn't submitted until perhaps 40 minutes after our arrival, but that's the point, we weren't really given a chance to submit our order -- and then when it arrived it was poorly prepared, the hamburger tough like a hard meatball."

  • "We went here for my sons graduation celebration. The food took a while and it was very busy, but not hectically so. We had an appetizer and plenty to talk about. At the end of the dinner, without us complaining, they paid for our wine and dessert because of the delay. Much appreciated."

It was cooked so well done that the desired flavor of lamb was not evident. The artichoke dip was served hot and tasty. Just as it should have been. "

  • "There for daughter's graduation. 20 minutes to take drink order, drinks arrive 20 minutes later. Took food order 15 minutes after drinks arrive. No bread, so have to ask for it. Multigenerational small group, so after hour of no food, my mother getting concerned about driving home in dark. My mom has to leave and still service staff hadn't checked on how we are doing, nor noticed empty wine/ water glasses. Finally hour later, we flag down staff to clear plates. And every time we politely asked for help staff appeared frazzled, but put out. Not a great combination for celebration. Can't order dessert because daughter needs to be at school party. Too bad because food was lovely, but barely noticed because hungry and angry. Ate inside. "

  • "Chose a sandwich recommended by my server and the soup of the day- fish chowder. The sandwich was very average and I could not taste any fish in the soup and did not care for its taste. When I asked the server if he brought the fish soup he said that he had and didn't seem concerned that it didn't look or taste anything like fish."

I was pleasantly surprised that the patio area was even more beautiful than I remembered. Service was a little slow to come but was excellent and very attentive once we got a server. The food was excellent, drinks were good. Nice relaxing evening. "

  • "Came with my girlfriend on her birthday as her only request that we go somewhere with a good patio. Great experience. Very casual yet upscale atmosphere with some great foods and wines. One waiter moonlighted as a professional opera singer (or at least he could have) and we got to enjoy hearing him sing Happy Birthday probably four times. "

  • "Best "date night" restaurant in the Twin Cities! The cheese and wine lists make for an excellent start to the evening, and the seafood is fantastic. Even simple things like their dinner salads are ridiculously delicious. The best part, however, is there is ZERO pressure to get you in and out. My wife and I were recently here and we dined for three hours over four courses! It was the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary. So many of the chains push you out so fast you don't get nearly the value out of an expensive meal."

  • "W A Frost has a reputation of being one of the better St Paul restaurants. What a disappointment! We sat at our table for a good 10-15 minutes before our waiter came to take our beverage request. It took an additional long time until they came. Again it took a long time for him to come back for our entree order. When the server came to fill our water glasses I had to ask if they provided a bread basket. When we finally ordered, our waiter didn't know that they were out of salmon. I ordered lamb burgers instead that were way, way too over cooked. My companion's food was equally poorly cooked. I'll never go back. Very poor experience."

  • "Because they opened the patio the night we were there, they were very short staffed. The service moved at a glacial pace and, after waiting 15 minutes for a creme brûlée to arrive, we just gave it up. The food was very good and once they get their service needs figured out, we'll be back. It was a case of bad planning."
