A word from WA Frost & Company
This is a favorite Saint Paul dining destination since 1975. The Restaurant is housed in the turn-of-the-century Dacotah Building which lies in the heart of the historic Cathedral Hill District. W. A. Frost has incomparable ambiance and rare old world character. It boasts several grand wood-burning fireplaces, a charming old bar and the European-style garden patio and garden bar and lounge. The new American cuisine at W. A. Frost is derived from an eclectic mix of ingredients meticulously sourced, with a very strong emphasis on local small farmers that use organic and sustainable practices. Minnesota's best wine list, best outdoor dining in the Twin Cities and the most romantic restaurant are just a few awards received.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Great brunch featuring both breakfast and lunch items. The tasting menu is a great idea but not if only one or two at the table orders it. Others have to wait and watch you eat. Those who didn't order the tasting menu were starving by the time their food came out and those with the tasting menu had already eaten 3 times. Clumsy."

  • "We had a kind, attentive, and courteous waiter. The dining room is lovely. We thought the food was going to be simple Americana, we were pleasantly surprised by the imaginative, delicious, succulent dishes, the cassoulet is divine and the mussels were plentiful and super tasty served with bread that is adorned with some kind of delicious buttery oil. Although pricey the bill came in under our what we had budgeted for, so that was a nice surprise. Afterwards, not wanting out WA Frost date to end we retired with drinks to a private nook in the underground grotto. It felt like a speak-easy with velvety couches, exposed brick, aged oriental rugs, and quiet jazzy music. We had a nook all to ourselves and two well prepared, creative cocktails."

  • "My husband and I got engaged at WA Frost (our favorite restaurant) in January 2008, and on Saturday we celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary at the very table where my husband proposed. I had mentioned this ahead of time when making our reservations, and WA Frost made sure to make our evening extra-special. First, we were treated to a complimentary champagne toast. And later, when we ordered dessert, they added candles in honor of our celebration. The food was delicious, as always, and our waiter was outstanding. He really helped to make the evening extra special. Between the food, the service, and the ambience, there's a reason why we come back to WA Frost for special occasions (and whenever we want a wonderful dining experience)."

  • "I was unsure of that to order when I first sat down to eat with my wife. It was not until the waitress mentioned the soup of the day (lamb) that I decided to try that as well as order a salad. I ordered the cobb salad to go along with my soup and that was the best part of the entire meal. I have cobb salads all over the country and yours was by far the best I have ever tasted. Simple, yet delicious. Keep doing what you're doing."

  • "My friend and I enjoyed the tasting menu with its wine pairings. It was our second time at Frost for this lovely dining experience, and it is one of our favorite in the Twin Cities."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed having lunch there for our second anniversary, as we had enjoyed eating dinner there on our wedding night and our first anniversary. The service and food were as outstanding as usual, and the environment was nice and relaxing."

  • "WA Frost has become the place where a friend from St. Paul and I meet 2-3 times a year for lunch and talk. The food is great, the service friendly, and the noise level is low."

  • "I've been to Frost's many times. I've taken clients there and celebrated personal and family occassions. This was special--our 11th anniversary. The food and service were top notch. The ambiance was cozy, and most of all quiet. The noise level was very low and conversations were no problem at all. Although it's still too cold for the patio, we enjoy that too in the summer. Overall, an excellent place for food and celebrations! I wll admit to being surprised by how good the food was and how imaginative the menu is: small but very creative. We will certainly go back there!"

  • "We were pleased to bring our friends to W A Frost's to celebrate a milestone birthday. We have always enjoyed the restaurant, but this time it was even more outstanding. The food was prepared excellently. Our wait staff was courteous and knowledgeable. The wine list was impressive and the desserts were very nice accompanied by marvelous coffee."

  • "We have gone to WA Frost for many years and it continues to be one of our favorite dining locations. WA Frost has a lengthy and varied wine selection. The menu is also varied with delicious, well-portioned meals and it changes on a regular basis. The dining experience is elegant, quiet, comfortable, and the service has consistently been some of the best we have received from any restaurant. It is a great location to celebrate a special occasion."

  • "As I enjoyed my dinner with family, I saw a gentleman eating alone, no book, no newspaper, no technology, just sitting alone enjoying the food and atmosphere. And you know what I thought!?!?! I COULD DO THAT at WA Frost! I think that is the highest of compliments to an establishment! In my busy life, peace and quiet and great food and relaxing surroundings are nirvana! See you soon."

  • "This is our "special occasion" restaurant. It's also where we go for a food experience. We always order the chef's tasting menu and in four visits have tried many dishes we never would have otherwise, always with wonderful results. We love it!"

  • "Planning on having a family get together for a big birthday at the restaurant in the near future, but, only if Andrew, a wonderful waiter is working that shift. We will plan accordingly. Easy to locate, valet parking was available, the restaurant was welcoming. Our table was just as I requested, in front of a fireplace. The wines and cocktails were reasonably priced and very good. Nice variety of appetizers and small plates and entrees. Everyone in our party ordered something different and everyone was more than satisfied. We enjoyed a 2 1/2 hour dining experience. We have mentioned W.A. Frost to all our friends. One person who is chair person of a dining club is going there with the group."

  • "Made reservation online; we were seated promptly, and we had a very nice table. Server was very knowledgeable, and provided with tips for selecting things from the menu. Good food, and great ambiance."

  • "This second try wasn't a total failure. It was again a Friday evening. The cook still has a really heavy hand with the salt. My wife said her dinner was very good, but only because of the skate. My steak, a beautiful shoulder cut, came with ketchup, can you believe that ! The wine Saumur-Champigny was again excellent. The service was off-hand, our reservation was at 5:30PM so he must have got really tired by 6:30 ! The support staff was very attentive."

  • "What a beautiful atmosphere. Wonderful views, spectacular food, and a great find. My husband ordered the oyster Po-Boy and loved it. I had the artesinal cheese and the presentation was a delicious as the cheese! Fish and chips and a burger rounded out the meal for our teenagers and all left impressed. We will be back,"

  • "We brought my parents here for brunch to test out the menu and were thoroughly impressed! Each of us tried a different thing and shared a bit of it with everyone else at the table, and everything was equally delicious and unique! We're really looking forward to hosting our brunch wedding reception here. The atmosphere is quaint but still fancy, and though it feels romantic there were groups of all kinds eating brunch-- families with children, couples, two female friends, and more. I wouldn't bring a group larger than 4 or 6 people, though, unless you want to rent out the back room. The server was welcoming & positive. Plus, who can resist Selby Ave? This is a great spot in a beautiful, historic area, with lots of charm and can't miss food."

  • "Our waiter was efficient, perceptive and had a great sense of humor The food was wonderfully prepared and served. The tartare was loved by all four of us. The mussels were fresh, delicately flavored and consumed with heartiness. Our entrees were, likewise, food to rave over. Thank you! Frost's never lets us down."

  • "We just shared the spinach and artichoke dip and had some drinks. They did not have Nordeast so that was disappointing since we both wanted that. The server was good, he showed up when we needed him, but didn't seem like he was annoying when we were talking. He was polite and made sure we were taken care of. The food was good. Only problem I had was that I had reservations for two and we got placed next to a table of 6 or so who were talking a lot and were not the quietest group ever. It wasn't the worst environment, but would have been nice to be in a more separated area from that group."

  • "This was the first time I ever ate skate wing. It was really good. Every dish we had involved some unusual combinations of ingredients and it all tasted great. This is one of our favorite places."

  • "It must be a new chef because we have been there many times before and enjoyed excellent dishes. This time all of the dishes including desserts were "modern gourmet." I had scale which was a very good fish. However, everything else on the plate could be thrown out. .25 inch cubes of squash, tasteless bed of kale, some tasteless mist of something or other. None of the dishes were really appealing. They were all mixtures of 5 or more things so that even if you liked one of them, you did not get enough to satisfy. The only deserts that were not messed up were crème brule and Izzy's ice cream. Looks like we will not be back there again until the menu and the chef change."

  • "Stopped in to check it out. Enjoyed our dinner. Surprised at the limited menu. Pleased with gluten free options. Waiter was pleasant and attentive. Warm welcome. One of the table helpers was in a sad or bad mood and didn't want to be there."

  • "Another fine experience at WA. We had the mushroom soup which was extremely flavorful, winter green salad was a great mix of frisee, red oak lettuce, apple, goat cheese plus more was perfect. The potato crusted haddock was wonderful. Efficient, pleasant service. We sat by the fire place in the smaller dining area and it was quiet & cozy. One of the best dining experiences I have ever had!"

  • "We have always had wonderful food with a great variety of options. Small plates offer the option of creating your own chef's table, and there are some mini-desserts and combinations which allow for great individuality. Each member of the group approached the options differently. I had three small plates instead of an entre, and was able to have three dishes that I loved. a nice twist this evening was a cassoulet made with pheasant -- a first for me. This is one of the few restaurants which often has skate on the menu -- one of my favorites. We have never had any dish that was not well prepared. The ambiance is excellent -- soft lighting and nice artwork. Service was, as usual, excellent."

  • "The salads were pretty blah. Mostly a whole bunch of lettuce, particularly the side salad that came with the burger. An olive or two, a couple of nuts, a tomato slice, would have been nice."

  • "The four siblings took 85 yo mom to WA Frost for a special lunch to get out of the house. She has been home w 85 yo dad who now needs care which is something we all share. I chose WA Frost because I knew she would have a unique experience w excellent food, service and ambience. Easy parking was also a consideration. I told my siblings "no chain" restaurant which is where my parents would typically go for lunch. We all had an exceptional time. The waitress was professional, understated and respectful. We all ate every morsel of our meals! The first time I was there was for drinks for my 40th. Love your spot."
