A word from WA Frost & Company
This is a favorite Saint Paul dining destination since 1975. The Restaurant is housed in the turn-of-the-century Dacotah Building which lies in the heart of the historic Cathedral Hill District. W. A. Frost has incomparable ambiance and rare old world character. It boasts several grand wood-burning fireplaces, a charming old bar and the European-style garden patio and garden bar and lounge. The new American cuisine at W. A. Frost is derived from an eclectic mix of ingredients meticulously sourced, with a very strong emphasis on local small farmers that use organic and sustainable practices. Minnesota's best wine list, best outdoor dining in the Twin Cities and the most romantic restaurant are just a few awards received.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We had a group of eight for early dinner on a Saturday. We ate indoors and it was wonderful because it was cool and quiet on a hot humid day. Because we were early we didn't feel we were bothering other diners with our chatting--which can be quite a bit w/a large group--and best of all, we could all hear each other without yelling. The food was terrific. We especially like the portion choices--entrees and also micro-entrees. Our server was very attentive and handled the dietary issues of some of our group with professionalism."

  • "We had a 7:30 reservation, but when we arrived we were told, "actually your reservation is for 7:45, would you like to have a seat over there and we'll call you when your table is ready?" I had my e-mail confirmation with me to show them it was indeed 7:30, so they did seat us, but we were a bit annoyed that they had tried to bump us without sending us an e-mail kindly informing us that they had overbooked the 7:30 slot and would we be able to move to 7:45, but they just moved our time without informing us. Next we were not greeted by any wait staff for over 5 min. We never received bread at our table but all the rest of the tables received bread and although the food tasted good, it came cold! We probably will not be dining there again."

  • "Great food and great service. Very original dishes. I would recommend."

  • "Had a good experience at WA Frost and based on the food, I would definitely recommend it and go back! Our server was kind of quirky, but very attentive and helpful with the menu. The only annoying thing was that there seemed to be no A/C, and I went in for dinner in late July…it was hot and muggy. So definitely not the most comfortable. I could see outside that they had a beautiful patio with plenty of tables - so I might venture back when it's not so hot!"

  • "I go to WA Frost every few years and it continues to hold up. The food was terrific and the service was outstanding (present but not overbearing). Loved it."

  • "We love this restaurant, but we were surprised that many of the lights were not working on the patio. Apparently this was not one night, but many nights. A great restaurant, but fix your lights - it is BEAUTIFUL on the patio."

  • "Absolutely fantastic. Oh, and the fries that came with the burger were pretty amazing, too. I could have eaten a whole plate of those and skipped the burger. Will definitely go back!"

  • "Our group of six adults met at WA Frost for a wonderful meal on Saturday. We were advised to change our inside table to outside and that was an excellent recommendation. The favorite dish at our table was the chicken. The cod was nice as well as the linguine small plate. We did not have dessert."

  • "Hi - I had eaten at Frosts before without being very impressed; however, Saturday night I had the Wild Salmon (gluten free) dinner. It was excellent as was the accompanying sauce."

  • "I brought a friend for dinner to observe his recent birthday. We were seated promptly, and the server was very cordial. We had drinks, an appetizer and different entrees. It had been a while since either of us were there, and the overall experience was very good. The usual problem was parking...we each had to park several blocks away. But, that is what must happen, with a popular place in a busy neighborhood."

  • "We sat inside by the window due to the "slight" chill in the air. It gave us a feel for eating inside vs outside. Our service was very slow and felt a bit "stuffy", while outside the servers seemed very attentive and vibrant. Our server said she had our table and a large group in another room - if so, not sure why management would stretch a person like that. Oh well, the food was fabulous and we had fun!!"

  • "We had dinner with some friends at WA Frost last Saturday night. My friend and I both ordered the pan roasted wild acres half chicken dish with smoked couscous and grilled asparagus, peas and chicken jus. It was the best! We wanted to pick up the bones and gnaw off every last delicious morsel! I highly recommend this dish. Our husbands ordered the pan roasted salmon dish and found it to be equally delicious. We ordered the kit kat desert to round off the evening. It was rich, decadent, and worth every calorie!"

  • "Came to WA Frost for a birthday dinner. We brought our own cake and wine and the waiter was happy to comply. Food was delicious with the exception of the charcuterie which could use a little work (disappointing selection and small). Restaurant was busy but quiet and our group of 4 could easily hold a conversation without needing to strain to hear each other. Waiter was appropriately attentive. The decor is very romantic. We moved to the outdoor patio after dinner and this too was very relaxing and pleasant. One of the best patios in the area."

  • "We had a perfect evening of dining here. Good food, good service, lovely setting. And the weather was perfect for outdoor dining, which helped of course."

  • "Disappointed that when I arrived I was told that any online reservation is seated inside rather in the beautiful garden."

  • "Long time friends dined under the umbrellas on WA Frost's patio for lunch. Our server, Jen was very attentive and the smoked chicken salad was wonderful. It's such a wonderful atmosphere on the patio!"

  • "If you intend to dine outside as I did, don't use Open Table. I expected to bring an out of town guest to dine on their patio with a reservation well in advance. The hostess was very rude stating that if you make an on-line reservation you need to call to confirm an outdoor table. We were seated inside with a view to the patio where there were 3 open tables the entire time we were there. The service was slow and inattentive. Food was mixed. My chicken was excellent. Two at our table ordered salmon. One serving was good, one was distinctly old/off. The chef is way too heavy handed with the salt all around. All in all a very disappointing night for a special occassion with an out of town guest."

  • "I read recent reviews before making our reservation to take a special client to WA Frost (Forepaughs is closed on Mondays) but decided to take a chance, not wanting to believe what others were saying. My mistake. The ambiance of WA Frost is never disappointing, such a beautiful venue, and our service was actually very good as well. But, while the flavor of my food was ok, I've never had to cut mahi mahi with a knife, and it was also cold. My husband was disappointed with the duck confit also. Neither of us complained as we didn't want to in front of our client (she said she liked her food but who knows), but we would have had she not been with us. It will take some convincing before I go back. Sorry, WA Frost."

  • "It was my first time there...my wife had been there 20 years ago....we went for the ambience and were very pleased. Wished we could've sat on the patio but the MN weather didn't allow that to happen. Our server, Michael, did a great job and offered excellent choices. We chose the Chef's Special, the Meat and Vegetarian option, and were delighted with the choices. And.....even though the portions seemed small by appearance we were pleasantly full when the meal was done. Our dining experience lasted over 2 hours and we will definitely go back."

  • "Wonderful patio, but couldn't make a reservation on-line. Odd menu. Strawberry salad was outstanding; beef skewers not so good!"

  • "Everyone knows that Frost's patio is the best in the Twin Cities. Food, too, is marvelous and well served; it's a pleasure to have waitstaff who know the menu as well as Frost's do. Only one question: WHY does WA Frost (at least 3 waitstaff on 3 recent occasions, and 1 phone respondent) continue to defend serving by-the-glass Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and other whites in *bowl-shaped* glasses fit for a rich Burgundy?"

  • "We went with a party of 7 and had a wonderful experience. The service, by Ryan, was perfect. He knew the menu in detail. He was professional and efficient. The wine list was posted on line and I ordered 2 bottles for the table upon arrival and they were presented quickly and were of very reasonable price. The appetizers were tasty and excellent. The chef's tasting menu was a fine a dining experience one could have in any high end restaurant. The menu choices ranged from house burgers to Limousin strip steaks to braised sheep neck to fine salmon fillet served hot or cold on a salad. There are an entire menu of fine cheeses which can be ordered as an entree, and, Ryan knew everything about each choice. This is a wonderful restaurant."

  • "The food was good, but not as spectacular as in the past years. Very, very salty on main courses. The waiter was friendly, but slow especially toward the end of our visit. The main problem was the AC -- it became increasingly warm inside. Next time, we will definitely only reserve for the patio."

  • "We had a less then memorable experience at Frost's. Always considered a St Paul icon, my dreams have been dashed. Made a reservation a week ahead but had to wait in bar for a half hour until we were seated (only after we reminded them we were still in there). Only waitress interaction was to order and get our check. Nothing else. Menu so-so, food even more so-so and priced nearly the same as our drinks (hmm interesting). Seems to me all the eggs have been put into the patio basket-however so-so food is so-so food no matter where it is consumed. Out dated interiors scream 80's and any touch of old elegance has long since worn away. Time for a re-brand as well as a sincere recommitment to exceptional dining and customer service."

  • "I took my husband here for his birthday. We loved the ambiance and the food. Both the cod and mahi mahi were excellent. Our waitress left a bit to be desired. She was pleasant but very phony and took forever to return to tend to our table."

  • "3-4 times a year we have dinner at WA Frost. Generally the food is good. This time the food was fair at best. My steak was overcooked and not particularly flavorful. It was quite disappointing. Our appetizers and dessert were both good."

  • "We had a reservation for Father's Day on the patio and were seated immediately. Our waiter was one of the worst I have ever had. We repeatedly had to ask him the same questions, he had to leave to find out the answers and would never return. It went on and on. We waited to order for about 45 min., waited for our food at least 1 hr., waited to have him check flavors of ice cream TWICE and then waited for our check. He couldn't stay on task or remember a thing. The food was okay but the small portion of salmon, which was quite pricey, was ridiculous and not a full meal. We enjoyed the atmosphere but that was it. We won't be returning."

  • "For some reason, all of my years living in St. Paul and in Minneapolis, I have never visited W a Frost. I took my mother and sister to W.A. Frost for their birthday lunch. I was very impressed with every part of the restaurant. I will definitely be back again this year and many times in the years to come. Food was excellent."

  • "I chose from the menu a salad that I was a bit fearful of; soba noodles with seaweed and broiled salmon. It was amazing! I am so happy that I didn't choose to play it safe. Wonderful choice. My friend's lamb burger received rave reviews from her as well."

  • "We went here for my sons graduation celebration. The food took a while and it was very busy, but not hectically so. We had an appetizer and plenty to talk about. At the end of the dinner, without us complaining, they paid for our wine and dessert because of the delay. Much appreciated."

  • "The restaurant was far from full yet we were seated at a tiny table just outside the kitchen door (yes, we had reservations!). The food was below average and we had to send one dish back to the kitchen as inedible; something we have honestly never done before."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "It is very expensive and the entrees are close to being on-the-edge yuppie food fare. I had a lamb burger that could have been elk, buffalo, beef or ostrich. It was cooked so well done that the desired flavor of lamb was not evident. The artichoke dip was served hot and tasty. Just as it should have been. "
