Diner Reviews
  • "Very good food. We went here for restaurant week, which is a great deal. I had a pesto pasta dish, and my wife had the roast boar. The pasta was great, but the boar was out of this world. Tiramisu and chocolate torte for dessert are definite crowd pleasers."

  • "All in our party noted how Volterra has held up so well after years of praise. We had a fantastic dinner at a great price. Usually one or both of these slide after a restaurant experiences a few years of success."

  • "After years of raising kids my wife and I have returned to sampling Seattle's food scene. The three courses for $28 Seattle times thing is perfect for us to explore new cuisine and find new places we want to share with our friends. Voltarra, housed in the same space as former favorite Burke's was a fine start. My cauliflower appetizer was truly great, and the wild boar with a Gorgonzola cream sauce was unique and tasty. I chose the only super Tuscan wine served by the glass, and that matched up nicely with my meal. Service was completely professional and friendly too. I left a generous tip to reflect our appreciation. All in all, I'd send any of my friends here with complete confidence they'd enjoy their evening."

  • "Volterra has become one of favorite restaurants in the city. The food is interesting and delicious. The service has been consistently helpful, knowledgable and very friendly. In my most recent visit on 4/5/14, I brought out of town friends who were equally impressed."

  • "A great dinner with perfect dining atmosphere. Just enough buzz to make for a fun and enthusiastic evening without being too much. Food very tasty. I ate the pork belly which was divine, others in my group a Had the menu at full range and reviews went from good to gorgeous!"

  • "The service, food, and wine list was great. the only issue I had was that my husband and I were sat next to a mom and young child. It made it a little hard to have a romantic birthday date night. the mom and child were creating a story thru out the entire dinner. Next time I think it would be nice to sit in the bar area instead."

  • "Love this restaurant. Very easy to eat Gluten Free, helpful waiter with good input for for GF diet. Food always fresh and delicious."

  • "We enjoyed the Challah French Toast (w Bananas Flambé) - Goldie Locks would approve! Not too sweet - just right! We decided the next time to order one of those with a few sides such as eggs and bacon for the perfectly rounded meal."

  • "Not only the food was of amazing quality, but the portions were very generous compared to other italian restaurants, especially during the 30$/meal deal. keeping such a high quality speaks a lot about the restaurant. From an authentic and sophisticated italian and expert cook...."

  • "Have visited twice – once just for appetizers and once far a three course dinner. Appetizers, entrees, and desserts were all distinctive and delicious. I refuse to make this good review any longer, as I want to be able to get a reservation whenever I wish."

  • "usually use the 3 for 30 as a way to test and rate our choice of restaurants. Had prawns and they we just ok. little flavor/taste. Side vegetables just ok. not the nicest presentation"

  • "A lot of the new places in Seattle are getting all the hype/press but I find that the established restaurants are seemingly always better overall. Volterra had notably good food, sizable portions (even for Dine Around), and the service was outstanding and personable (thank you Jim). While there are plenty of places in Ballard not worth waiting in a line for I would happily recommend Volterra to friends."

  • "We braved the bad weather but it was worth it for our first visit to Volterrra. The soup with cannelini beans and guancale was comforting and delicious. The lamb osso bucco was outstanding. It went well with the creamy polenta. My dining companion loved her wild boar tenderloin. She also enjoyed her chocolate torte and the glass of red wine she ordered. We both highly recommend visiting Volterra."

  • "Recently celebrated my birthday at Volterra. It was our first time there after hearing some positive recommendations from friends and neighbors. The food was terrific as was the service, making the evening a delight for me and my family. We all would highly recommend Volterra"

  • "Very nice to go to dinner and hear what my friends are saying. Not noisy which is such a plus. Food, as always, was great except for one dish ordered by a friend. The Rabbit Cacciatore was very, very dry and was not good at all. This was surprising as the food is usually delicious. Jessica is outstanding server."

  • "I've been to Volterra several times and never been disappointed. It's one of few places in town to get authentic Tuscan cuisine. Combine that with superb service, an outstanding wine list, and a charming atmosphere and Volterra is never a bad decision. My boyfriend and I recently went to Volterra for Valentine's Day and the food and experience were terrific. While one of the salads on the prix fixe menu was a bit underwhelming, everything else was great. I was a bit disappointed that their outstanding mussels weren't available, they didn't disappoint with the wild boar or the scallops with lobster risotto. For fine dining in a warm, comfortable environment, Volterra is hard to beat."

  • "Came for the "Valentine's Dinner" which is just selected items from their regular menu packaged into a 4-course meal. The tortellini and grill asparagus we got were delicious. The asparagus came with a great creamy herb Parmesan sauce that was balanced by the acidity of balsamic onion and roasted pepper. I got the wild boar tenderloin in a Gorgonzola mustard sauce that was out of this world. The boar was incredibly tender, and not gamy at all. We also had the sea scallop with lobster risotto. Unfortunately, one of the scallops was slightly overcooked. Not so bad that would deter me from going back, but disappointing nevertheless."

  • "We have been coming to Volterra for a while and absolutely love it. The food is always great and we have the best service. They also make delicious cocktails! :-)"

  • "I had made our reservation online, at which point I mentioned that we don't eat beef or pork, and that I absolutely can't have any alcohol in my food. We ordered polenta with wild mushrooms which, as it turns out, was slathered in veal stock. When I asked about this, she replied that mushrooms are always cooked in veal stock, which is a bad response on a number of levels. When my wife inquired about whether the seafood stew has alcohol in it, the server said it doesn't. I was skeptical. The server checked with the kitchen, and sure enough, there was wine in it. Finally, she scooped up my unfinished drink, along with the napkin it was sitting on (and the pill that was on the napkin) and took them away."

  • "Insanely overpriced for product delivered. Caesar Salad resembled a cheap hotel catered event, pasta was bland, excessive use of truffle oil(fake flavor) poor execution overall. Second and last time going there."
    Dined on 2/1/2014
  • "Was not quite as good this last time that we went...but I will go back as I like the atmosphere and dishes I have ordered in the past"

  • "The food was delicious, our server was very friendly. We had a reservation and were seated at a very small table on the back wall sandwiched between other seated tables. It was very difficult to have a conversation in such close quarters to other diners. I appreciate that space is difficult to come by, but for having made a reservation, and seeing that there were bigger tables untaken - and not seated the whole time we were there - we were disappointed in our experience. On top of being so close to other diners, the lighting was very bright and overhead, and there was no music playing. Awkward dining experience, and for the menu prices and difficulty parking in the area, I wish I could say the service and food would bring me back."

  • "Went to Volterra with a group of friends for dinner. I had been there a couple of years ago and thought the food was great and the cocktail was delicious. While the food and cocktail was still fairly good, it did not reach the level it once did in the past. I don't know what went wrong, but I was disappointed to find this place not as good as I remembered."

  • "Was looking forward to this restaurant but wasn't quite what I expected..it definately looked romantic with low lights but the.tables were WAY to close together and we couldn't carry on a conversation without the tables on either side hearing what we said and distracting because we heard everything they said....plus really noisy...just not for us"

  • "Have eaten many times at Voltarra, this was special. We had 6pm reservations. That was perfect, it was quiet and relaxing. I have found that latert, it get's very crowded. It gets very tight between the tables."

  • "But, on the other hand, it should not be rated overly low. Maybe it is just something special in Ballard, where traditionally everything was very "normal", thus Volterra stands out a bit, or had a fling before there was competition. But no one used the terms "amazing" or "unbelievably good". And the menu is not an ordinary menu - quite a bit of boar, solid entrees with wonderful descriptions of meats, fish and vegetable preparations. So, you will have a very nice meal, with your nice friends, and a reasonably nice bill, and the chances are your server will be nice, although very busy because it is a popular venue. Your stomach will be full and you will probably say "OK, that was nice, but what else is in Ballard that we should try...""

  • "Voltera's been around long enough that we, and friends, often mention it as an 'old standard' - meaning that you can always get a good-to-great meal, knowledgeable and attentive service, and now one of the best places to dine well AND hear what your table companions are saying. The food continues to be inventive and delicious, with new dishes as well as standards on the menu. With so many new restaurants opening in Ballard and vying for attention, I hope Voltera's not overlooked amid the din and new competition."

  • "The caesar salad was really amazing!! However, my main course was the crispy chicken, it was alright, but I have had similar and better and less expensive at other restaurants. My husband had the seafood stew, he said it was good but not great. The bread was good, but dipping sauce of oil and some spices and salt, not anything to write home about. Unfortunately that said, our bill was over $250 (before tip and we all had drinks) for 4 people and I will likely not go there again for dinner due to some food good but not great. But I would definitely go again for salad at a weekend lunch."

  • "Everyone loved the food, and the server was really helpful in making decisions (there are so many delicious-looking things on the menu!). It was also quiet enough that my mom (who has a hearing loss) had no trouble hearing our conversation. The wine the server recommended was great, too."

  • "Service was great. Staff was knowledgeable about the wine and menu. Food was good, a little bland for my taste but good none the less. We had the crab raviolis and and the veal meatball dish. Teramisu was very good. Tables are really close together so not as cozy as one woud like for a romantic dinner but overall a good experience."

  • "Volterra has a great menu of Italian dishes that get away from the typical choices of fresh pasta or wood-fired pizza. The portion sizes are generous and the prices are reasonable. The service is exceptional, while still inviting the casualness that Seattleites are know for."
