  • "This was my 4th meal at Volterra. This time I took 3 foodie friends and we shared all of our dishes. The pasta dishes were exceptional, especially the dungeness crab ravioli. In fact all of the seafood we ordered was exactly right: clams and sausage appetizer, halibut entree, crab ravioli. However, the meat dishes were unmemorable. The consensus was: Satisfying though not inventive. Sadly, they have small tables and use enormous dishware so when the food arrived, our four top with wine, water and bread on the table was overcrowded. Also, our waitress was attentive at first was seldom seen throughout the meal. We asked a couple of times for a coffee refill during dessert and it never came. My friends were underwhelmed but I'll likely return."

  • "The ambiance, service, drinks, bread are amazing at the start of the meal. The food leaves much to be desired. Our salads tasted as though they had been made hours before and had been stored in the walk-in fridge. Not to mention some wilted greens.The appetizer I got, mushroom polenta was good, but the polenta and Ragu were two completely different temperatures (polenta way too hot, ragu almost cold). This was confusing to my palate, And the taste was lost:-(The pasta my husband got was average (sausage, escarole, white bean). The ratio of ingredients was off, and the taste was bland. Too much penne, not enough sausage tossed in broth with plenty of white beans. We both really wanted the food to be better! Not sure when/if we will be back. "

  • "For Seattle Restaurant Week, tried out Volterra for the first time. My companion and I each ordered cocktails, which came to us after the appetizer. Our bread arrived after the cocktails. Tables around us seemed to have their service timed better,though we had the same server, and even the same orders (only a few choices for the special). My cocktail was perfect, but husband's drink was awful. He politely sent it back, and ordered a beer. To their credit, the restaurant took the bad cocktail off the bill without our having to ask. Server wasn't rude, but not friendly, either. The food was impeccable, quite delicious. "

  • "we had a nice dinner at the ballard volterra. as we live in kirkland , home to volterra's sister restaurant, we are occasionally there so this was the first time to the original in ballard for a couple years. we had great apps and entrees and service despite the reality it was quite busy rainy tuesday night. we 've always appreciated volterra too because it was one of the very early "good " restaurants to lead the ballard transformation."

  • "Since my dinner was completed before 6:30, the restaurant was not full and hence quiet. The food was excellent as was the service. The latter is not always the case for a woman dining alone. The servings were generous and one half of the wild boar came home with me. It was a steal during restaurant week and so good I'll go back and pay full price for a terrific dinner. I do not drink wine so can not comment on their list but it is long. I did appreciate that they had several good beers on draft. "

  • "Very good food. We went here for restaurant week, which is a great deal. I had a pesto pasta dish, and my wife had the roast boar. The pasta was great, but the boar was out of this world. Tiramisu and chocolate torte for dessert are definite crowd pleasers."

  • "After years of raising kids my wife and I have returned to sampling Seattle's food scene. The three courses for $28 Seattle times thing is perfect for us to explore new cuisine and find new places we want to share with our friends. Voltarra, housed in the same space as former favorite Burke's was a fine start. My cauliflower appetizer was truly great, and the wild boar with a Gorgonzola cream sauce was unique and tasty. I chose the only super Tuscan wine served by the glass, and that matched up nicely with my meal. Service was completely professional and friendly too. I left a generous tip to reflect our appreciation. All in all, I'd send any of my friends here with complete confidence they'd enjoy their evening."

It made it a little hard to have a romantic birthday date night. the mom and child were creating a story thru out the entire dinner.   • "We braved the bad weather but it was worth it for our first visit to Volterrra. The soup with cannelini beans and guancale was comforting and delicious. The lamb osso bucco was outstanding. It went well with the creamy polenta. My dining companion loved her wild boar tenderloin. She also enjoyed her chocolate torte and the glass of red wine she ordered. We both highly recommend visiting Volterra."

  • "I've been to Volterra several times and never been disappointed. It's one of few places in town to get authentic Tuscan cuisine. Combine that with superb service, an outstanding wine list, and a charming atmosphere and Volterra is never a bad decision. My boyfriend and I recently went to Volterra for Valentine's Day and the food and experience were terrific. While one of the salads on the prix fixe menu was a bit underwhelming, everything else was great. I was a bit disappointed that their outstanding mussels weren't available, they didn't disappoint with the wild boar or the scallops with lobster risotto. For fine dining in a warm, comfortable environment, Volterra is hard to beat."

  • "Came for the "Valentine's Dinner" which is just selected items from their regular menu packaged into a 4-course meal. The tortellini and grill asparagus we got were delicious. The asparagus came with a great creamy herb Parmesan sauce that was balanced by the acidity of balsamic onion and roasted pepper. I got the wild boar tenderloin in a Gorgonzola mustard sauce that was out of this world. The boar was incredibly tender, and not gamy at all. We also had the sea scallop with lobster risotto. Unfortunately, one of the scallops was slightly overcooked. Not so bad that would deter me from going back, but disappointing nevertheless."

  • "I had made our reservation online, at which point I mentioned that we don't eat beef or pork, and that I absolutely can't have any alcohol in my food. We ordered polenta with wild mushrooms which, as it turns out, was slathered in veal stock. When I asked about this, she replied that mushrooms are always cooked in veal stock, which is a bad response on a number of levels. When my wife inquired about whether the seafood stew has alcohol in it, the server said it doesn't. I was skeptical. The server checked with the kitchen, and sure enough, there was wine in it. Finally, she scooped up my unfinished drink, along with the napkin it was sitting on (and the pill that was on the napkin) and took them away."

  • "The food was delicious, our server was very friendly. We had a reservation and were seated at a very small table on the back wall sandwiched between other seated tables. It was very difficult to have a conversation in such close quarters to other diners. I appreciate that space is difficult to come by, but for having made a reservation, and seeing that there were bigger tables untaken - and not seated the whole time we were there - we were disappointed in our experience. On top of being so close to other diners, the lighting was very bright and overhead, and there was no music playing. Awkward dining experience, and for the menu prices and difficulty parking in the area, I wish I could say the service and food would bring me back."

  • "Went to Volterra with a group of friends for dinner. I had been there a couple of years ago and thought the food was great and the cocktail was delicious. While the food and cocktail was still fairly good, it did not reach the level it once did in the past. I don't know what went wrong, but I was disappointed to find this place not as good as I remembered."

  • "But, on the other hand, it should not be rated overly low. Maybe it is just something special in Ballard, where traditionally everything was very "normal", thus Volterra stands out a bit, or had a fling before there was competition. But no one used the terms "amazing" or "unbelievably good". And the menu is not an ordinary menu - quite a bit of boar, solid entrees with wonderful descriptions of meats, fish and vegetable preparations. So, you will have a very nice meal, with your nice friends, and a reasonably nice bill, and the chances are your server will be nice, although very busy because it is a popular venue. Your stomach will be full and you will probably say "OK, that was nice, but what else is in Ballard that we should try...""
