A word from Vivolo
Vivolo, the family name, long associated with fine dining and Italian cuisine, is located at 140 east 74th street, New York. Vivolo, established in 1977 by owner Angelo Vivolo, is nestled in a charming 1875 townhouse occupying two floors.

You enter into a rich English redwood paneled dining room and antique oak bar with a working fireplace. Ceilings beamed with dark wood create an overall intimate, friendly and romantic atmosphere. A "café" alcove offers several secluded tables or the perfect setting for dinners for 10.

The second floor of Vivolo has the look of a turn-of-the-century parlor with a gold leaf trimmed ceiling and working fireplace. The parlor floor is also a favorite for private parties.

Diner Reviews
  • "Very enjoyable with a warm atmosphere in an old townhouse. A real neighborhood gem"

  • "We were pleased with our experience. The service was excellent and the food was very good. We had a friend in a wheel chair and they accommodated her needs. We will return."

  • "This is a good restaurant with nice clubby feel, but the food was ordinary. It is a good choice if you need a place that is romantic or a place that is good for conversation. But unless you live nearby, there are many better options on the UES."

  • "I have been to Vivolo several times for lunch and the food and service were always excellent. Waiter seemed stressed and there was a gap of about 45 minutes for main course and when we asked what was the delay, we were told "we thought you were busy chatting" and it still took another 10 minutes to get our main course. Usually the waiter checks several times to ensure service is good, but not this time."

  • "We've been here many times and the food and service are always good. Loved their baked clams, and they give 8 big ones! The Vongole was excellent, though they could have filled the bowl with more pasta. Pasta is not the expensive part, so don't be stingy. Dessert was Italian cheese cake and that was a big portion. :-). Great Espresso as well."

  • "Made a reservation for 6 for a Friday night. I was the first to arrive and they have a table ready but I chose to wait for my friends at the bar. The manager and the bartender we very friendly and we soon struck up a conversation. They made great recommendations for wines. Once everyone arrived we were taken to our table upstairs. They brought us an appetizer (on the house) and didn't rush us to take our orders (we're women and like to talk). When we ordered the food came quickly and was great (portions were good too)! The entire staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and we had a wonderful time! We will be going back again!"

  • "I would absolutely recommend Vivolo. Our party of 10 all had different dishes and apps and salads. We were all very happy with quality. Service was gracious and impressive from beginning to end. "

  • "Perfect go-to restaurant for freshly-prepared dishes served by friendly and efficient waiters. Atmosphere downstairs is warm and homey. The "Neighborhood" menu is a great buy!"

  • "The service doesn't get better than Vivolo. Neither does the food. This place is Northern Italian perfection."

  • "Our reservation was for 2 pm. We were walking from the Museum of Natural History and we were early (1:30). The restaurant was practically empty (one other table was occupied when we arrived) so it was quiet. Food was excellent - our best meal in NYC. Considered getting the $28 three course prix, but got the clam and linguine. My husband ordered the italian meatloaf and he enjoyed it. I asked for more bread to sop up the liquid left from my meal."

  • "I went here with a couple of thirtysomething friends, stumbling upon it on OpenTable because we were looking for a restaurant not far from the Asia Society (after attending a talk one evening). I suspected that most restaurants in the area would skew way older as far as crowds, and sometimes (think Nino's) that has unfortunate impacts on the food and ambience. Vivolo, however, transcended its older crowd and borderline stuffy (the dark-carpeted, creaky stairs come to mind) decor with its excellent food. The service was appropriately attentive, and our main waiter was fine. This other waiter -- who tried so hard to be funny, it was off-putting- - insisted we leave the tip in cash, which I found strange. "

  • "What a lovely place to dine. Food was excellent and the portions just right. The servers were very attentive and accomodating. We had a nice leisurely dinner, not rushed but the servers kept an eye on the time because we had a play to attend. Reservations are recommended (which we had) but I was very surprised when quite a few customers with no reservations came in, they were graciously welcomed and seated. I highly recommend Vivolo and will definately return."

  • "Trying to find a spot for dinner on a Saturday night in NYC means being willing to try something new. We did and it was great. Adorable little place. Good was fantastic and my foodie friend said she would definitely go back!"

  • "The owner greeted us warmly and seated us promptly. One member of our group had only a short time to eat and the waiter helped her to make a menu selection that was brought to table quickly. The rest of us had more time and enjoyed our meal. If you have the appetite, the prix fixe menu is really a great way to go. We were eating light, however, and the waiter split our salad and main dish without complaint. We were seated downstairs and were almost bumping elbows with the diners on either side of us. No place for private conversation. Next time we will ask about the upstairs dining room. The food was very good, the portions not overwhelming. Just right for most. We will go again when we need a place near this concert venue."

  • "We had a group of 8 looking for Italian in the Upper East Side for 730pm on a Saturday and after reading all the reviews, I chose Vivolo. I was impressed. They had a round table for us which was great for conversation. The food was fantastic. We had some picky eaters at the table and a foodie and everyone was truly happy with their appetizers and entrees. The prices were in line with other Upper East Side Italian place but the portions were a bit larger than I would have expected. The service was outstanding with the waiters filling water without anyone asking. I would highly recommend Vivolo."

  • "We had a pleasant dinner at this long-time popular local restaurant. The food was quite good, the wait staff amiable. The room was almost full, and the noise level was substantial -- which seems to be the goal of many restaurants these days."

  • "Our favorite restaurant in New York. The food is always very good and the wait staff always treats us like regulars, even though we only get to New York once or twice a year. The persistence of this gem, and the presence of many regulars who are denizens of the Upper East Side, tell you all you need to know. For a real bargain, try the pre-theater menu."

  • "We had a good first experience here so we brought friends with us for this visit. Embarrassing at best! While the salads were very good no so with our main dishes. My friends pasta w meatballs & sausage came to the table as warm pasta & chilled meat & sausage. He sent it back only to get cool pasta and tongue burning meats. The same for his wife but with her grillred salmon. My fish was good. My friends fish wrapped in potato was so salty he pushed it aside. No fixing that! Goid cappuccino. But we're not goung back. Too many other great NYC restaurants to explore."

  • "Vivolo is like a warm embrace. It feels so good and it never disappoints. You are greeted by the debonair, Carmine, and made to feel like royalty. Angelo, the proprietor, presides gracefully over the energetic scene. The service, particularly, the lively Marcello is pure theatre. What a wonderful evening! We can't wait to go back."

  • "I used to go to Vivolo years ago, so I decided to try it again. It was wonderful. The fireplace was cozy. The wine was great and affordable. The food was fresh, creative and delicious. The service was attentive, but not overly so. Really a wonderful experience."

  • "Had an awesome time on Valentine's Day at Vivolo. The menu was off the charts with a very good wine list. Not to mention a homie-restaurant vibe with good waiters. We had a great time overall experience on V-Day!"

  • "Vivolo is the perfect spot for good food, lovely "grown up" surroundings and low-level music conducive to having conversation with table mates. I can't recommend it more highly. Shrimp appetizer, kale salad, antipasto--all excellent. Calves liver was not on the menu the night we visited, but the waiter made a request to the chef, who obliged. Branzino was beautifully cooked and presented. Everyone at our table of four was pleased. The maitre'd who greeted us, the coat check woman and our waiter, who was both professional and friendly, all contributed to a lovely evening. We look forward to many more dinners at Vivolo. (This is a sincere review, not a paid advertisement, though it may sound like one.)"

  • "We went to Vivolo on a cold night and getting avery warm welcome and a table by the fireplace kicked off our dinner beautifully. The waiters and the host were friendly and warm even though they understood that this was our first time eating in an obviously neighborhood haunt. The food was very good. We both had fish dishes and the fish was fresh and well seasoned and presented very nicely. We will definitely go there again."

  • "The Eggplant rollatini from the appetizers was absolutely delicious. Our friendly waiter told us not to waste the sauce and rightfully so. We used the complimentary bread to finish it up. I had the branzini and loved it but It's hard to go wrong with that one. My boyfriend had the ravioli which I tried and loved as well. Basically we cleaned our plates. No complaints on the food or service. We looked at the dessert menu but didn't order anything only because we were very full. But it had a lot of good choices that were very tempting including chocolate moose, tiramisu, and others. The ambiance is nice but we noticed a much older crown around us. Didn't bother us though. I would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "Vivolo never disappoints. The food and service are always reliable. Many patrons are regulars. Those who aren't regulars often see what we have ordered and strike up a conversation about he food and appetizing presentation. We are always happy to talk to our table neighbors about this restaurant."

  • "Gracious welcome. Fabulous bar tender. Potent pours. Kale salad a 10. Spinach salad excellent. Baked clams perfect. Table bread not my favorite as I like a crusty bread & this was a soft wheat type. I had the grouper w/ farrow & ate the entire good sized portion. It was light, fresh delicious! Tuna was just okay according to my partner. Next visit I'm passing on the sherbert served in a frozen hulled out orange, not a good presentation, texture or flavor. Fresh fruit & cappuccino very good. Cappuccino could have been hotter but it was a good cup of cappuchino. Fairly priced for an NYC evening dining experience. Warm ambiance. We sat on the main level as there was some large parties upstairs . We'll absolutely be repeat dinners. Recommend!"

  • "I like the idea that you can get a decent bottle of wine for under $30. The mains are good but the salads are much too salty. Usually, the service is quite gracious, but it wasn't this time. I like the place because it is so pretty, but I don't think I will return any time soon."

  • "For the UES this is a neighborhood spot, few tourists, mostly regulars, and service that is personal and smiling. Recommend it as a place to relax after a long day, and to be treated well too."

  • "My wife and I have dined often at Vivolo, which is in an enchanting town house, with two floors, and a fireplace on each one. A friendly bar is on the first floor, and a dining alcove near the front for an intimate dinner. The lighting is flattering, and the food excellent. We ordered the "Neighborhood" menu, sharing appetizers, entrees, and desserts--a sort of tasting menu. To start, we both had penne with kale and lentils, followed by trout with faro, and salmon with braised endive for entrees. We finished our great meal with dessert: strawberry shortcake and spumoni. Each of us also had a drink--perfect Manhattan for me and Pinot Noir for my wife. Service is attentive but not intrusive--a wonderful dinner in a beautiful setting!"

  • "We arrived early on a snowy night in NYC and the Vivolo staff was quick to accommodate our party of 8. Our server, Marco, was very attentive and had great attention to detail. He also had a great sense of humor which was very appropriate for our group! The food was top notch, from the pork meatballs and shrimp appetizers to the delicious main courses. The dessert sampler was the grand finale. Will definitely be put Vivolo on our favorite NYC list. Thank you!"
