Diner Reviews
  • "Outstanding food and wine.......service was sorely lacking unfortunately"

  • "As always great food! great service. Would definately come back soon"

  • "We picked this place randomly off of open table and it was great! The food is kind of pricey but normal for a good dinner in Chicago. I had a very underwhelming red wine, but my gnocchi was fabulous and so was the bread! We thought the decor was awesome and everything was very pleasant. It wasn't too loud, which I also appreciate."

  • "Went before seeing Motown the Musical and have been to Vivo a few times. The food is consistently awesome! The service this time was just ok. It wasn't busy at all, just a few tables at that particular time, so you'd expect that the service would be extremely attentive - it wasn't. Has been much better in the past. Ordered quite a few cocktails and an app with the entrees, so it wasn't like this was a little bill. I will absolutely go back, I'm assuming this was a fluke. The food is worth repeat visits again and again."

  • "Relaxed refinement of atmosphere and lovely wait staff, but I found the cuisine only average."

  • "Vivo was a great treat for my wife and I. The service and the food were awesome. Very fresh. My wife had the crusted Tilapia and I had the veal. I like the simplicty and elegance of the meal."

  • "Dinner was excellent, and our visitors from England loved Vivo. Our server, Nicole, was a lovely and gracious young lady. She made the experience a delight."

  • "This is one of my favorite places in Chicago! Both the food and ambiance are special and sophisticated. The drinks are made with a special touch, which adds to ambiance of the restaurant. Surprisingly, I feel that everyone is very moderately priced for the quality that you get."

  • "I went to Vivo with two girlfriends to celebrate a birthday. The service is amazing and attentive without any sense of it being overbearing. The wine our server recommended was fantastic, and our food was sublime. I had the Gnocchi Vivo which is amazing, with a side of the sauteed spinach, which is also excellent. My friends both loved their entrees as well. The atmosphere is fantastic -- huge glass doors bring in some early evening natural light, and even when the restaurant filled up it never felt too loud or overwhelming. I loved it and will definitely be back."

  • "Second or third time here...both enjoyable. Good menu...server made suggestion to have a half-portion of pasta, which with a big salad was just right. Love the ambience -- energetic, but not so noisy you can't have a conversation. "

  • "I enjoyed an outstanding lunch with a client at Vivo this week. The insulata mista was very fresh with light dressing. The ravioli with chicken sausage and tomato-based sauce was delightful. My guest enjoyed the halibut special. The service was attentive but we didn't feel rushed, even though we lingered to discuss business matters."

  • "I needed a place to host a business discussion and originally booked for 6 but had to up my numbers a few hours ahead of our reservation to 8 and they were very accomodating and flexible. We ended up sitting outside because the weather was spectacular which was again a last minute decision since they had set an indoor table for us. The service was just right. They got the flow of our meeting and did not push us to move faster but were very attentive to our needs. The food was very fresh and timely and the wine suggestions were good (pinot gris and barolo). "

  • "Vivo's food is amazing! Order anything on the menu and you are guaranteed to be satisfied. The signature drinks are awesome and the wine list is pretty extensive. Don't expect the server to nag you every second so if you like to be checked in on at least 3 times, it won't be here on a busy night. The restaurant itself is pretty tight so if you don't like sitting right next to someone skip this spot. Overall, great food and a totally worth it. "

  • "We've been here a few times before and thought Vivo was worth trying again. This time we were disappointed. This is a smallish place that squeezes you into tables like sardines. All you can hear during dinner are the conversations of the patrons at the tables next to you (3 inches away). The food is mediocre at best best. The Caesar salad was one of the worst we've ever tasted. Bland beyond belief. The main courses were decent, but nothing special (pesto ravioli and 12 oz. NY strip steak). The wine list is marginal. So many better Italian restaurants in Chicago!!!!!"

  • "While in town before my husband had, had a great lunch and knew I would love the place. We had the best Caprese Salad we have ever had!! It is made with roasted tomatoes. What a treat. My dinner was the Rigitoni with sausage and peppers. They did not skimp on the sausage. My husband has the Veal Milanese and he really enjoyed it too. We ended the evening with the bread pudding and coffee. We were totally delighted with the entire dining experience. "

  • "I chose to celebrate Mother's Day at Vivo on a whim actually. I used Open Table to help me find a place, with a special brunch for Mother's Day and they did not fail me. My mom, aunt and brother were thoroughly impressed with the atmosphere, the pre-selected menu and the staff. They were very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. I would definitely go back to this restaurant for a romantic meal with my boyfriend or a night out with the ladies to try their wines."

  • "Restaurants have come and gone on Randolph Street, but Vivo has remained, and it is a good thing, too. The service is courteous and friendly, attentive and unobtrusive; our waitress took very good care of our table, but did not "hover". The food, as always, is excellent, and perfectly paired, and presented. I did not have any wine (it was a business luncheon), but the wine card looked very nice, and, had I more time, I should have enjoyed a glass or two of something. However, that is my fault, not Vivo's, LOL. Overall, absolutely wonderful, in every aspect, and one I will look forward to, again and again."

  • "Diasappointed that the House Specialty Osso Bucco is no longer a menu item yet still advertised. Rather pricey for what you get. Probably would not visit it again based on the initial visit. Wait staff was very professional and attentive though."

  • "Went to Vivo just before the Hawks game. We were seated immediately. Atmosphere was comfortable, old country style i.e. not contemporary. Food was good and reasonable. Wait staff was exceptionally attentive. The wine was adequate for what we had and was recommended by the server after we asked for reasonably priced Italian red. Not exceptionally loud as we were able to carry on a conversation without a strain. Only bad feature was valet parking. After dinner we waited and waited and waited but still no car even after several others who came after us. It seems they lost it somewhere. It was eventually found. Of course the panic associated with almost losing our car almost eradicated the fine meal we had."

  • "Stunning, upscale place in an older building. Great menu. Homemade pastas. Grilled calamari ! Gnocchi was a great updated version of a classic. Not pricey but looks like it should be ... Terrific energetic young staff. "

  • "I took my boyfriend here after cocktails at the Aviary and the food, service, and atmosphere were all amazing! We loved everything we ordered at Vivo, especially the phenomenal gnocchi. We have been talking about it all weekend and have already told our families and friends about Vivo. We cannot wait to go back!"

  • "The food was all very good-not great-but very good. The atmosphere and service were excellent. I would go back for sure but next time I do, I'll order a more traditional entree. Over all, I recommend you try Vivo."

  • "I haven't been to Vivo in over a year, my husband and I went last night & the place was as good as ever! Lively & energetic.. The service was exceptional. They have a new & notable wine list. I ordered the risotto which was heavenly & my husband had the ribeye with horseradish mashed potatoes. Overall, the scene, service & food were all excellent!"

  • "I was looking for a restaurant open late night and found Vivo. The service was fantastic and the food was amazing. They had a special ravioli filled with prosciutto in a pecorino cream sauce that was the most delicious thing I have had in awhile. All the pasta is homemade and wonderful. My friend enjoyed her pasta too, but my other friend (a vegetarian) didn't fair as well. She got the eggplant Parmesan and said it tasted like it was microwaved. My experience however was spectacular, and I will be back!"

  • "This is my 3rd time at Vivo, and it has been good every time. I absolutely recommend this place. There was a group of 4 of us and we all liked it. We actually even showed up an hour early for our reservation, my mistake, and they were able to accommodate us in about 20 minutes. In short, a good place for a date, a good place for groups, a good place to bring your parents, just really versatile."

  • "I love to go to Vivo when there is no event at the United Center. Food and services is always great, but with a slower pace you can actually have a conversation. The bartender makes great drinks, knows her stuff and is very pleasant...have a drink before sitting at your table."

  • "The beet salad, black pasta seafood marinara, steak and veal piccata were all excellent. The service and atmosphere made for a lively evening!"

  • "My wife and I got married here back in 2011. The ambiance is the same, as is the service (which are incredible compliments). However, we couldn't help but feel like the food had become average at best. I ordered the duck, which was actually pretty good, but the dessert, soup, appetizer-it was all either too bland or too salty. Maybe it was just because it was a "set' Valentines menu. But compared to our wedding, or the other half dozen times we have been there, eh... not too good by comparison."

  • "Made reservations, no wait, great service, good wine, delicious food, but a little tight with seating."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "It was absolutely the worse food I have ever had in Chicago. The wine pairings were bad - cheap wine and the tomato soup aw watery and no flavor. The entree was comparable to what my college form served."

  • "This was not the first time we have been to Vivo, but it was the first time we sat upstairs. Overall, it was a great dinner. Food was awesome from start to finish. Was torn between a few things but ended up splitting a 1/2 portion of the gnocchi prior to main course. Was a perfect amount. Drinks were great. Server did a nice job and was personable even though he had the entire upstairs section. Quiet, cozy and romantic spot. Prices are very reasonable."
