Diner Reviews
  • "Very good food. Enjoyed all from appetizer to desert. Great cocktails. Our service was just perfect, comfortable yet professional. Only negative is the place is looking a little worn. Ask to be seated upstairs if you would like more intimate evening."

  • "We were excited to try Vitae and were rather disappointed with the experience. Our waiter was professional and knew her stuff. She was helpful with the wine list. The rest of the staff lacked professionalism. They started mopping the floors around us before 10pm. And, they kept dropping the mop so it hit the floor loudly. We all took that as a clear sign that they wanted us out. We were stunned."

  • "Somewhat unassuming from the outside, but very pretty inside. Excellent, creative food. Having passed this place numerous times, I was shocked at how good this place is, and right off of 5th Avenue. Will definitely be back. Great business lunch place."

  • "Food's good. Tries to be a little too precious. Atmosphere lacking, thought I was back inthe seventies."

  • "This is the second time we've eaten here in the last 2 months and the second time did not disappoint. Ask to be seated on the upper floor as the lower one has a very energetic bar area which tends to inhibit dinner conversation. Our 6 pm reservation was promptly honored and after assuring our server that we did not have to make a show, we were allowed a non-rushed 2 + hours of eating wonderfully prepared food, and catching up with friends. The location so close to Grand Central station makes Vitae a fabulous find!"

  • "Ate here before show at Carnegie Hall. Both the duck and beef tenderloin were excellent. While not inexpensive we were happy to pay for the fabulous meal. Refined upscale restaurant and menu with a laid back feel. Would happily dine here again."

  • "Pretty restaurant very close to 5th avenue. Appetizers were delicious but the main plates were disappointed."

  • "We arrived early for our 5:30 reservation, but they didn't start serving dinner until 5:30pm so we were offered seats at the bar. They had an interesting drink list which changes periodically (monthly, I would guess) . The bartenders were nice as well as the other staff and all very attentive. There were servers, table runners, and a host who made sure our meals came out as they were prepared and our drink needs were met. It was a little pricey but we each ordered 2 meals as appetizers and and one as our main entrée. The lamb, pork tacos, tuna, and others all prepared deliciously with flare and great presentation. Decor was modern. It seemed like a small restaurant with a quaint main room (10 tables) and additional seating upstairs."

  • " Good option in place of the typical theater district places. Liked the freebies, even if they are small. Still, there were 4 small food/drink items that were provided for free to each guest. Nice touch."

  • "Fabulous, creative food, great service, cool vibe...excellent for business dinners. Consistently wows. I highly recommend Vitae."

  • "Ratings and entering this not very ordinary restaurant raises high expectations. Creativity of amuses more or less confirmed this, except when you are gluten free. Taste and creativity is poor then. Based on the comparison of an ordinary and gluten free menu the conclusion is that Vitea is not focussed on this request. Having selected the wine suggestions related to the menu, did definately not meet minimum standards. Trying to impress customers with a low quality Italian Barolo is not smart. The sommelier's choice did certainly not meet my taste or the level you would expect here. In addition, menu courses are served so fast after each other that you hardly have time to enjoy the wines. A definate price / quality imbalance at Vitea!"

  • "Had a lovely evening at Vitae! The food was very good, and the service attentive and accommodating but never intrusive. There are lots of nice touches - amuse bouche, cookies, etc. - and the peach salad was especially good. I would highly recommend it for a business of social occasion!"

  • "Great presentation and flavors, but even after the (oily) bread, treat from the chef, appetizer and main course, I was hungry 90 minutes later...."

  • "The food was fantastic! I ate at the bar as a single diner. The bartenders were more focussed on mixing cocktails than serving patrons sitting at the bar, which is understandable. But, if you only have limited time to eat, I would suggest sitting at a table rather than at the bar."

  • "Where do I start, this restaurant blew us away. Food was exquisite and the staff was delightful especially Leslie. Me and my husband fell in love with Vitae and almost don't want to tell anyone about it, it's that good. Vitae is indeed now our favorite restaurant to dine at when in the city! While eating at the Vitae we dined with our two daughters (8,6) and the staff made them feel so welcomed, thank you Vitae! If we had to pick favorite meals of the night it would definitely be the pulled pork tacos, chestnut Agnolotti & Mascarpone Cheesecake. Food presentation was very beautiful, I really enjoyed the artistic approach especially with the desserts just stunning! We can't wait for our next meal at this Midtown Gem!!!! "

  • "This place was fantastic! For appetizers, we had the fried oysters and the veal meatball sliders. The amuse bouche was a tasty watermelon juice jello with mint oil. The appetizer portions were substantial and the waiter very kindly told me to order half a portion for my pasta entree instead of the the full portion. Turns out, he was exactly right, there was no way I could've finished a full pasta entree. My pasta entree was perfectly cooked al dente. My boyfriend had a whole trout and he was also very satisfied with the dish. We had no room for dessert, but the petite fours were a nice touch to finish. "

  • "Three of us went for lunch. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals, plus the rolls served were delicious! We appreciated the wine recommendations and the attentive service. Consequently, we will return and will recommend it to others. It is so nice to find a place near Grand Central Terminal that is delicious and does not specialize in steaks."

  • "I invited a guest visiting from Santa Fe to discuss business and to catch up. We had never eaten there before but its proximity to Grand Central made it convenient and the menu looked interesting. From the moment we arrived, we were treated very well. The menu is varied making it hard to choose the dishes we wanted to order, but our server was excellent and she made some terrific suggestions. The food definitely exceeded our expectations and we thought the little extras they served without any request from us were a nice touch. We both walked out adter after an excellent meal and feeling well served and completely satisfied. I highly recommend it for small groups too."

  • "Met a friend here for a GNO = girls night out. All was great from the moment we walked in. Staff friendly and helpful. White wine was cold as if it had been sitting in ice for an hour compared to the sorta cold served at other restaurants. Our waiter Jason was enthusiastic about the menu, which he knew REALLY well and gave an unbiased description of entrees we inquired about. The chef sent out several sample bites that complimented what we ordered (and met our dining restrictions), including the wine, which was wonderful. The decor is spot on and the food was savory and delicious. I'm still thinking about how tasty the pork taco appetizer was! The portions were perfect and the pace of each course was timed well. Cannot wait to go back!"

  • "Perhaps it was because they had scaled back because of Memorial Day but the service really suffered Saturday. The food quality and preparation was not nearly as good as it was the prior time we came to Vitae so I don't know that it will remain on the list!"

  • "This is one of the most overlooked Manhattan restaurants offering excellent quality and service at more than reasonable prices. Location is a handicap -- a little too far from Broadway to attract the theater crowd; a little too deep in a midtown canyon of office highrises to be a lively draw at night. No doubt Vitae sells a lot of burgers at lunch, and an excellent small plate menu makes the long bar a popular spot for informal dining. But the real attraction is the inspired cooking of chef-owner Edwin Bellanco who puts his own signature on every dish. Equally surprising is the relatively modest bill at the end of the meal. No sticker shock here. the long bar is very popular at night, featuring a superior bar menu. "

  • "This restaurant was amazing and the perfect place to visit for our girls getaway in NYC. The service was spot on, and the staff worked very well as a team. The meal started off with some bread, and the restaurant provided us with free butternut squash soup samplers. We then ordered a poached pear salad to start which was a huge hit! We ordered the duck, beet pasta and risotto which were all outstanding. All of the food ordered was cooked to perfection. The decor in Vitae was very modern and chic. It was on the quieter side for restaurants we dined at in NYC and I am still wondering why? This truly was a fabulous restaurant, that offered fabulous food, and service while still while affordable! I would highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "Vitae was wonderful! I was expecting a nice restaurant, high prices and decent food. What we got was so much more! There was an amuse bouche, a dessert tasting on the house and madelines to-go as we were leaving! They were very accommodating, too. We had show tickets, so we had to leave on time, and two of us were late due to traffic, and the staff did not give us a hard time about either! I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "We had a waiter-in-training. Service was slow and our order was so fouled up they comped one of my husband's dishes. Then they forgot to take it off the bill! Food was pretty good, but not as good a the average SF place. I judge New York by SF standards."

  • "With its convenient location to Grand Central (46th and 5th) Vitae is a perfect place to meet for a really good before theater dinner. Our 6:00 reservation was promptly honored and we were seated upstairs overlooking the energetic bar. The lobster appetizer ( an added feature to the menu)was incredible as were fish main courses. The wait-staff were very attentive and pleasant. A real treat to have such wonderful food and the ability to "walk some of it off" before making an 8:00 curtain. "

  • "Dined here the other night with a friend who requested we eat near Grand Central. Vitae was a gem! You walk in and are surpised by the decor as it doesn't feel like you are in Midtown but Downtown. We had the special lobster and artichoke salad with a Meyer lemon sauce, burrata, spring risotto and maltagnoli which were all incredible! The hard part was making a decision as everything sounded good. We did not have dessert but were brought some meringues and cookies with our check. As we were leaving we were handing a lemon financier which went perfectly with my coffee the next morning. I will definitely be coming back to try more. "
