Diner Reviews
  • "This place is awesome! We had a large group for a Birthday and the service was excellent! (as was the food and wine!) The menu had so many items we all wanted to try, our appetizers and dinners were so fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is super rustic, we loved it all! Will definitely be back."

  • "You know, I really wanted to like this place. The inside itself, the vibe, the look, it's pretty great. It has a very rustic feel and is located at the end of King Street close to the water in Old Town. This place has so much potential however...A. The Food was mediocre B. Drinks took upwards of 20-30 minutes to get to the table C. The food took over over an hour to get there D. Our server was inattentive . Based on those facts, it was NOT worth what we paid. My parents were visiting from out of town so I was extremely disappointed."

  • "It's took 25 minutes before a waitress stop by , the waitress assign to our area came by 45 minutes later. We ordered a salad with our meal and after waiting 25 min, I ask our waiter about our salad, she responded by saying that all the food comes out at once which was inaccurate . Finally the food arrives without the salad I just inquired about. I witness another person storm out of this resturant in frustration"

  • "We loved the look of this restaurant and it was packed. It is a beautifully restored building. We had the crab dip with tortilla chips and it was very good. The chicken dinner with Brussels sprouts, eh, okay. Service was very good. Fun place to try for the ambiance."

  • "VF&G is always a great place to take friends. It has a wonderful fun atmosphere and the food is very good. Different than the usual American fare. It is all locally grown and they put it together well - such as the root vegetable casserole I had as a side. It's always fresh and delicious. The bar scene is great too if that's what you're after. The upstairs has a large group area and a pool room if you are up for a game after dinner. Its one of my favorite places in Old Town."

  • "We were in for a Saturday lunch with no real plans other than catching up. The server was informative when asked questions about the menu and more than accommodating to our swap outs on our lunch choices. He appeared at the table just enough to replenish coffee or to ask if things were okay. He did not hover or rush us out. A great spot for lunch."

  • "Although I note the uneven reviews by many, my experience was thoroughly enjoyable for a weekday lunch. Food well and promptly prepared and service attentive. And the setting is comfy and attractive."

  • "Hostess lacked the friendliness of the rest of the staff. I had a reservation and she couldn’t find it. When the other hostess pointed to it she acted like it was my mistake. The only thing that saved this night was our awesome waitress and the phenomenal food."

  • "We thought the food and service were very good but the noise level was off the charts. For the price and style of menu we expected a moderate to quiet experience but instead we found ourselves in a very noisy and crowded bar level of noise. We were elbow to elbow to the people next to us and the bar directly behind, with music and bar chatter bouncing off brick walls, meant we could not hear each other to have a conversation. Really unpleasant."

  • "Got there way early, thankfully they were able to seat us over 30mins before our reservation! We were also able to fit the extra 5 friends who showed up. Really enjoyed the spacious venue and a dining area surrounded with a curtain for a bit of privacy. Unfortunately the service was very slow, about 25 min for drink orders & 45 min before food orders were even taken, possibly due to the unexpected size of our group but still very frustrating. One of my friends complained about this and was soon greated by a concerned manager who was very apologetic and happily comped some of our drinks to compensate. Overall we did have a great night and would definitely plan another group event at this venue."

  • "It's always so difficult to get a table at this restaurant, we really lucked out with getting the reservation at the time we wanted booking so late. The food was ok, nothing stood out as amazing. The service was great, our waiter michael was awesome. Drink selection was good. But the restaurant was SOOOO LLLOOUUUDDDD! I left feeling as though I had screamed all night long. If i wanted some upscale american I would rather go to Rustico, much better draft list, and tasty food for slightly less $$."

  • "Overall, we enjoyed our first time experience here. Loved the decor, and the menu looked delicious. We had one waitress who told us the 'specials' and took our drink order. Then another waitress came over and told us another set of 'specials' and explained the first waitress forgot our drink order. It was very a little chaotic at first, and it was quite noisy for a Friday evening. We had delicious food (crabcakes, steak, and veggie burger). We'd go back again, but at a quieter time of the week to really enjoy the meal."

  • "Good food - but the noise level was extremely loud - however it was during March Madness."

  • "The staff was very accomodating to our (slightly demanding) party. They opened up a closed dining area for us and remained attentive through our lunch. The food was tasty and delivered quickly, despite the lunch rush."

  • "Overall we had a great experience. Terrific location and atmosphere, and our waitress was absolutely fantastic. The menu offers a nice selection. The food was a little uneven. Our appetizers were very good, but our entrees were a mixed bag. My salmon was great, but something was off with my friend's burger. We tried two desserts, and both were fine, but not anything special."

  • "Arrived early and were told we would have to wait for our reservation. The bar was packed so bartenders had a difficult time hearing us as the place is unbearably noisy. The warehouse setting is great, but not for intimate dining. It is a young crowd here and caters to bar business. Finally got our table and were seated at a high top in the upstairs bar area. There were three group parties around us so we had to move as it was way to loud to even talk to each other. We were moved, but not without being told what a problem it was causing the restaurant. Food was wonderful, but servers are young and not attentive. Long wait for cocktails during the dinner. What a shame that such a nice atmosphere and menu is ruined by the noise."

  • "Came here for a late dinner and were promptly seated in the back (near the kitchen) on the ground level. Room was very dimly lit so the bright fluorescent lights in the kitchen were overbearing. Server was good but the bar service was a little slow (forget about a draft cider). Started with the white wine/garlic mussels and they were flavorful and light. Then had the local white fish and it was very hearty. The polenta and chorizo-buerre blanc combo made it taste more like a pork dish, but it was still good. We were, however, very disappointed in the roasted brussels sprouts. Roasted sprouts are supposed to be crispy and browned. These were extremely soggy and drenched in an indistinct sauce – tasted like they were boiled, not roasted."

  • "My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary. Our server was young but very attentive. She made some excellent suggestions for dinner. The food was hearty but still had good presentation. We both really enjoyed our meals, he had fish and I had the steak. We will definitely be back."

  • "A beautiful restaurant in the heart of old town with an excellent menu- wide variety, and everything is delicious. Excellent beer selection as well with knowledgeable bartenders. But the service is abysmal. Each time I go the waiters seem too busy to be bothered or no where to be found. Perhaps a management issue but it is a shame to waste such great food on such poor service. Most recently, our waitress was no where to be found. We waited an hour for food. When it came out, she brought apps and entrees at the same time. Then, we had to wait 30 min after our plates had been cleared just for her to come back to our table and process our check. Unfortunately I will not be coming back. This was the straw that broke the camel's back."

  • "Had a great dinner with my wife and daughter. The upstairs dining was very nice and quieter. Fantastic good and good wine. Service was great, attentive but not obtrusive."

  • "The décor and environment at Virtue is fun. It is a converted warehouse. It can be a little bit loud due to the size and ceiling heights. Their food is very good and I like that they state on the menu what items are vegetarian or gluten free. My only concern is that the food took a while to get to our table and they forgot my dressing on the side for my salad. The food was well prepared and seasoned when it arrived."

  • "This is one of those places that I was somewhat disappointed with due to the wrong impression I had before visiting. If I had known that the noise level was going to be extreme, I would have taken an out-of-town guest elsewhere. This was not a good place for catching up specially with 8 of us. Too bad, the food was pretty good."

  • "Just a lovely meal. The food selections were all super elegant, tons of beer options, and a fantasticly trendy environment."

  • "Great atmosphere for happy hour or night out with friends, but not great for a romantic dinner or deep conversations. Felt a little cramped at the tables, and part of others conversations. Food and beer were good, but a bit pricey. Waiter seemed a little rude and unfriendly. Would go back for a drink, but not dinner or hosting a group party. Loved the decor and location."

  • "Ordered eggs over hard ... got them runny. Waitstaff blamed kitchen. My dates meal was fine. The restaurant is loud, acoustics poor. Only an okay experience. Would go back, just to see if they can get it right next time."

  • "I've been here a few times and truth be told, I've always been underwhelmed. Although, this time .. it was faaaaantastic. Maybe it was the Sunday night before the storm that kept everyone away but it was a wonderful dinner with a friend. They even gave us the "private room" table (it's blocked off with mosquito netting and has a great feel as you get the sensation of having a private dinner - because essentially you are. The food was perfect and the cocktails are fresh and amazing. The wine list if great as they have an abundant selection of California reds from Sonoma that pair well with their meat courses. For those that like desserts - the selection is a tad sparse in selection but all very good."

  • "The food was great once we received it. Everyone likes to have some time between courses, but ours was too long. We were there almost two and a half hours and had the ask for a dessert menu. We opted out of dessert and went to another restaurant. There were six in our party and when dinner was served, my dish was apparently given to another table. When I finally received it, it was delicious. The restaurant comped the dinner; appreciated but it was not necessary. The feeling amongst our party was they were under staffed for the amount of business that night. Overall the restaurant if very nice and food is excellent."

  • "TV's are plentiful in this restaurant so if you like that, this is a great place, however, if you are looking for a romantic, quiet restaurant go elsewhere. Manager was helpful, but hostess was very unhelpful in accommodating our seating requests (even though they were requested through open table and there were plenty of open seats.) Food was good. Beer was served in plastic cups! I would highly recommend eliminating the plastic cups and TVs...the decor is exquisite and they only detract from the experience."

  • "We enjoyed being at Virtue and Grain, except for being seated in the very back room on a very cold and blustery night. The draft in the back room upstairs needs to be addressed. After we ate in the chill, we moved up to the warmer, more welcoming front room and listened to the band. The latter part of our visit was extremely enjoyable!"

  • "I've eaten here twice: once for lunch (we sat outdoors) and once a few days ago. I enjoyed the outside seating much better as inside it was packed and very loud. The food both times was great. I loved their version of a veggie burger; it seemed to be made with grains and beets which made for a hearty texture. They also have several other vegetarian options on the menu. The beer is a little overpriced."

  • "This is the second time for me at Virtue - once for dinner and now for lunch. The service started out ok and the apps were good, but the main course was nothing special at all. We (party of 8) all had sandwiches and no one was saying how amazing they were. Everyone was sort of underwhelmed. The server apparently forgot about us half way through our lunch, as we waited 20 minutes after we finished for her to come take our plates and give us the check. She was friendly enough but being the only people in the place probably didn't help. Overall, not all it's cracked up to be."

  • "I am sure our food would have been good had it not been very cold. Two out of three dishes were VERY cold. Manager tried to make amends and offered free dessert. We did not want to wait for substitute meals. Seating was very cramped as other tables could push into our space. They were very nice, but we will probably not be back."

  • "Although the ambience varies from upstairs to downstairs, overall it was good. There was musical entertainment which made conversation a struggle upstairs but wait staff expertly guided us to a much quieter setting downstairs. The food and drink were excellent. I look forward to my next visit."

  • "Enjoyed lunch with a soup, salad, sandwich combo. So many good choices on the menu. Big open air dining, some sofas, large bar. Sheer curtains can be pulled around some tables. Peppy service by Molly. They run mid-week specials which are worth a try (Wine Down Wednesdays), and are open late as well. Biggest down side was the noise level--beyond OpenTable's highest rating of "energetic". It was difficult to carry on a normal conversation with my lunch companion. So be forewarned."
