Virgil's - NYCTeachers Broadway night outWe are a group of theatre loving teachers who work together and plan several nights each year going to a show and enjoying a pre-theater meal together. Last time I tried, I was too late to get a reservation for 10 at Virgil's. This time, I made my reservation about 2 weeks in advance and got us one. Everyone was excited to go and enjoyed the food they ordered. Some of us hit traffic, but the wait staff at the restaurant was very accommodating. We all got to have dinner and were on our way to the show just in time!6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious BarbequeService was excellent....we brought a nine month old baby and they had our
table ready with high chair set up when we arrived. Very kid friendly family type
restaurant. Hush puppies we're some of the best I've ever had ...,though not a fan
of their sides, the Barbeque was delicious.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMTerrific place for after event mea! After running in central park several coworkers and I gathered at Virgils to replace the calories we burned off. The waitstaff were friendly, we were seated quickly and the food was plentiful and great tasting. Out of a party of 22, none were disappointed. We will be back.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMDinner for oneService- I was a bit early for my reservation, but they seated me immediately, the lady who showed me to the table was very pleasant. I sat facing the window, upstairs. Not an impressive view, but a good spot to do some people watching.
The server came over within a minute, welcomed me and took my drink order. When I got my beer, there was something wrong with the keg (tasted weird), so they swapped it for a bottle straight away.
Food- outstanding! I'm not used to the portion sizes, being a tourist, so I ordered way too much. If you have anything, get the train wreck fries. It should be compulsory!
Value- For about $40, I got more food than I could possibly eat, great service, and a great atmosphere. I would recommend this venue6/10/2013 12:00:00 AM2nd time aroundLoved Virgil's the first time we visited NYC with the family and decided to return for the best BBQ in NYC. Could not believe the location just off Times Square which was convenient to our hotel and activities. Reservations were easy to make and they can accommodate Gluten free requirements, which was crucial for me. If you love BBQ and all the southern " fixings" Virgil's is ThE place. Grits, coleslaw, corn bread and more to please your pallet and fill your face with drippy sauce. Come hungry, operations are generous. Price is right, service is good, although you might have a little wait..6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMyhis was my first time i hadyhis was my first time i had the grill catfish and it was vbery good. all my friends enjoy themselves as well. we heard about this restaurant from someones daughter.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMVirgil's has a consistencyVirgil's has a consistency with food and service that keep us coming back. Best join in Times Square.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding food and service! Our waiter was terrific and the food was delish! Everything was perfect!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was good, big portions,Food was good, big portions, but meat (ribs) were not too tender. For the money ($26.99) we will not purchase them again.
Our server, Dave, was great!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Food, Fast Service! My mom, sister, and I went here after a 2:00 show. I made my reservation through OpenTable.com and found it to be very easy to do. When we arrived, we were a little early but they sat us right away. The selection was great. We all ordered some type of combo and everything was delicious and was served very quickly. Definitely a great find if you're in the mood for southern barbecue and comfort food!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat timeI love to go to Virgil's. the food is amazing, and the service super exquisite,6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMthey treat ya right!I celebrated my 40th birthday at Virgil's last week. I've been going to Virgil's for years now, and they never disappoint. I made a reservation for 12 but there ended up being 18. Luckily it wasn't super packed, so they were able to accomodate all of us. Our waitress was excellent at handling the large group. Our food was served quickly and not one person complained about anything...and for a group of 18 people...I consider that a huge success. Thanks for being a great, reliable place where this guy from Texas can get his BBQ cravings met in this metropolis.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMAs usual, a delicious andAs usual, a delicious and pleasant dining experience6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMNice for date night!I planned a date night for us. I had tickets to a show at Town Hall and he works on 42st so it was close enough to get there, eat, stay a while and no thave to hurry to the venue. Worked out perfectly! I'm not a meat eater but the Trainwreck fries (minus bacon, jalapenos on the side) were delish! I had fried catfish, cheese grits (yum!) and coleslaw (wasn't too crazy about that, too much vinegar). He raved about thechicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy and collard greens with (I couldn't believe anyone still cooked with) ham hocks! the meal was good, the comapny even better and our server Justin was on top of us at all times! Good experience. Tried wings before, not impressed. I gave it a 2nd shot. Glad I did. would go back again!6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat BBQ, service, and ambianceThe main problem with Virgil's is deciding what to order, with so many choices in BBQ food and drink. The waiter was extremely helpful in directing my wife and me to the right choices. By all appearances everyone in the restaurant, including staff, was having a fun time. The food was excellent and the prices were reasonable considering the restaurant is right in the Times Square area where nothing is cheap. We would definitely visit this restaurant on our next trip to NYC and would recommend it to all our friends in Oregon.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent experience!I had an excellent experience at Virgil's! I was meeting up with a cousin that was visiting from New York, and it was a great place to catch up. The staff and good were fabulous as well! I definitely recommend this restaurant!6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect ribsVirgil's ribs are the best I've ever tasted and I'm from the South where we eat a lot of ribs. Everything else I've sampled is also outstanding. Don't miss the cheese grits. This is my favorite restaurant in New York City.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMReliableVirgil's is always a good spot for good meat and great ambiance. Portions are big, and dessert are home-made delicious. Not a fancy place but it's a hidden gem right off Times Sq.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMGood Job Virgil'sVirgil's has great BBQ, just about something for everyone on the menu and the service was great.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGood foodThe food was very good and was served hot in a timely manner. Service was ok6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMthe staff was very pleasant.the staff was very pleasant. We arrived early, but were seated without a problem. The service was prompt and courteous. Needless to say the food was excellent. The portions were so large I ate the leftovers the next day for dinner and the following day for lunch. Every time we go to a Broadway show we eat at virgil's. This restaurant never disapoints.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMBland FoodThe restaurant was in a nice location in New York, we arrive 2hrs before our reservation and they were able to accommodate us .the food was bland and slightly tasty , the dry rub ribs were good and tender the smoke wngs were good ,the hush puppies were great nice drinks plenty of food on each plate .the service was great.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMYummy BBQ in NYCFor the many people who complain about not being able to find a good BBQ north of the Mason-Dixon, look no more. I've been to Virgil's several times (in the heart of Times Sq) & I never get tired of it. The brisket is FANTASTIC (& meaty). The ribs were delicious. The side dishes are not too big and very tasty. Portions are big! I took a doggy bag home & I'm happy to report, both the ribs & french fries taste just as great after reheating. Yes, I said FRENCH FRIES! If you're planning on going, make a reservation. The place is almost always packed & the wait times (w/o a rezzie) can be long. Friendly, knowledgeable wait staff too!!5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMNight at Virgil'sFriend and I had tickets to a Broadway play later that evening, on the recommendation of my sister decided on Virgil's. We both experienced the most mouth watering Red Snapper over mash potatoes with vegetables special. Each mouthful was absolutely devine. Just the right seasoning, texture and the presentation was splendid.
Although Virgil's is noted for it's BBQ, for now I am hoping to return and enjoy this dish once again !!! THANK YOU TO THE CHEF !!5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMbest bbq everWe came from italy and we have never tasted such as a delicious bbq meat!5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMmy wife and i had a wonderfulmy wife and i had a wonderful dinner. it was our anniversary day in new york. agreat day. we will be back next year.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMRibs are to Die For!Took in laws who are rib affectionados. They LOVED the dry ribs. The Carolina barbeque is my favorite. Service is excellent and atmosphere is pure fun. Seated quickly with reservation. Hot towels to clean up are a much welcomed hoot!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMPre-theater dinnerWe went here before an 8pm show. Had 5:30 reservations and the place was packed. We were seated within 10 minutes of arriving. Food was good and huge portions - should not have ordered appetizers. Ordered fried chicken and brisket. They also had a kids menu. Was pleasantly surprised given its touristy reputation. Food and service was good - not fancy or expensive. Loved the handtowel "napkins" and the hot towels at the end.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMBig portions at Virgil'sA reservation is a must--this place was jam-packed on a recent trip to NYC. Fortunately we had reservations and were seated on time. We ordered a salad and brisket sandwich, and it was more food than the two of us could eat! The portions are large, and the food is excellent! We will definitely visit again the next time we're in NYC!5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMBig Food Authentic NYC styleMeat lovers delight as I had always wanted to try pulled pork and beef brisket and I wasn't disappointed.5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious and funThe food was outstanding and the service was great. Be prepared for large portions. We all had enough food left for an additional meal. I was with a group of 10 for a post matinee show dinner. There were many larger groups celebrating graduations. We were served promptly and were able to make an 8pm train with plenty of time to spare. My group had the salmon, Memphis ribs, grilled vegetable salad with chicken, grilled chicken breast dinner and the pulled pork sandwich. The meats were tender with great flavor. The smoke ring on the ribs shows that they really know what they are doing. The atmosphere is casual - the silverware comes wrapped in a towel for a napkin. The warm towels after dinner are a nice touch. Everyone was pleased.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMOnline reservation?I made an online reservation to assure a table at this busy restaurant, and when we got there, it was not in the system. The staff was very nice and made sure we got a table. Otherwise that, Virgil's is a great place to relax!5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMBarbeque at its best!We were unable to secure reservations at another well-known NYC restaurant due to time conflicts. This restaurant highly recommended Virgil's. It's off Broadway just enough that you feel the closeness of the overflow of Times Square. We were greeted with a smile as we entered the door. Restaurant seemed a bit close and small as most NYC restaurants until you are led upstairs into a very spacious dining area. Our server, Sunshine, greeted us immediately. He made us feel very welcome and was very attentive throughout our dining experience. Our dinner was outstanding. Portions were very overwhelmingly huge.
We would highly recommend Virgil's if you like barbeque, and if you don't, we would still highly recommend Virgil's!5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMVirgil'sGood food very good service made a point to work with us to get to our show on time Great experience. Half our party was slightly delayed staff very understanding overall would def go again5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMGreatWe had a feat experience and loved everything. The service was great and the food was awesome.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMNight Out with momI love this place. I've been here a few times and always have a great time. I took my mom here for a end of Mother's (Day) Week dinner. The food was great as usual and the drinks were strong. It's a bit on the pricey side so I don't go often but it's worth the price. I had a really great waitress, Beth. She was attentive and gave great recommendations. This is the place to go if you are looking for real BBQ in midtown.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMBest dinner on our holidayWe booked virgil's for our first night in NYC and it proved to be the highlight of our full 5 day break.
Food was outstanding, service was great and very knowledgeable of the menu which helped us to decide our choices
I cannot fault virgil's one bit.
So I would just recommend you try this place when you visit the big apple.
Oh and we had the pleasure of the president of Canada dinning on the night we were there.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMLove That Macaroni & CheeseGreat for lunch if you work in the area. Great mac & cheese and barbecue beans. We had the flat dogs this last visit. Very nice staff.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMVery good bbqEnjoyed the ribs and you add sauce so they are not dripping in sauce. Very good mac & cheese and collard greens. Crispy, fresh salad.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistently Great!Been dining at Virgil's for 19 years since they opened in '94. My absolute favorite Bar-B-Que!! No trip to NYC is complete without at least one meal at Virgil's - lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch - always great food and great sevice. Convenient to Times Square area and theatre district. Also try sister-restaurant, Carmine's, for great Italian food, just a block away!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMyou don't have to have ribsyou don't have to have ribs or bbq to enjoy good food at virgils bbq i chose to have the broiled catfish it was so juicy so meaty so flavorful it was outstanding the portion was ginormous and it was just a nice change from the normal barbecue5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMI ordered the brisket andI ordered the brisket and thought it was on the salty side. The Mac n' cheese and hush puppies were delicious!5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMMy favorite restaurant in NYCI've gone so many times, it feels like home. I love the atmosphere, the music, the staff. It's my favorite food on the East coast. I especiallu love the Savannah Salad, Chickem Fried Steak, Hush Puppies, and Popcorn Shrimp (I love the sauce that comes with it.). My favorite side is the Memphis BBQ Beans. I love the cornbread. The napkins are little towels, which I like. At the end of your meal, you get a hot wash cloth to wash your face and hands. I really love it here.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent reasonably pricedExcellent reasonably priced and roomy BBQ joint! Really good tangy sauce, NorthCarolina style, is the secret.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experienceThe food was amazing. The portions were big and were value for money. It is such a nice change of pace in the Theatre District. Fabulous dry BBQ! Bring your appetite & don't miss the nachos!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMReally good food!We went to Virgil's on Saturday for a very casual dinner. Good food, huge portions, friendly attentive staff and reasonable prices. We would definitely go back!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMVIRGEL'S CLASSIC COMFORTWe had a 5pm reservation through open table. Our event ended early and we got to Virgel's early. They were able to seat us right away. The wait staff was very pleasant except one waiter kept coming over and over asking if everything is alright. We love Virgel's and finally I told him we had been here before. As usual the ribs, mac and cheese, biscuits were awesome. Great cold beer from a pretty good selection of brews. Can't wait to come back!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMVery goodVirgil's is terrific. Always good food and good service.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat BBQ in Times Square, NYCVery friendly at the acceptance desk, and very good food. It's great for dining out before and/or after hanging out in Times Square. We were on the 1st floor and had a great view from the big window while dining. We started with some gorgeous onion rings and followed up with texas beef and chicken; portions are above standard in terms of both quantity and quality. Their BBQ sauces are a plus, atmosphere is friendly, and service is super fast and accurate. Recommended.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
