  • "EXCEPTIONAL ALL AROUND!!!! Great food, extraordinary service and superb ambience! GO! GO!! GO!!! Not to be missed."

  • "Something is happening in the kitchen at Viognier and that something is quite special. We returned to Viognier after a long hiatus. From the beginning of the meal to the close, all four at the table commented that we could not have given the level of food and service higher marks. We all had different starters. Leek soup received rave reviews, beet salad was full of flavor, scallops were a hit. Wine suggestions were wonderful. Seriously, the food coming out of this kitchen is at a new level. We all had the cod which was cooked perfectly and had perfectly paired and flavorful tidbits on the plate. Desserts like a walk in a candy store, so many treats on the plate and presented so beautifully. A fine meal w/ perfect service."

  • "Underrated. I saw only 4 stars on yelp and expected such. However the taste and presentation of the food was incredible. The service was almost too good. They were so attentive, we didn't get to have much of a confidential conversation but you can't really complain about that kind of service. Very nice people. Very professional. If the dining room changed their chairs, it might look more formal/fancy."

  • "Inside and on the second floor of Draegers San Mateo, consistent fine dining is at hand. Menu is a la carte or fixed price for 3,4 or 5 courses. Quality food and presentation along with plenty of choices from the wine menu. I want to put it in the same league as the Village Pub or the Plumed Horse in Woodside and Saratoga respectively but there is something about the service and the creativity of the menu selection that isn't quite as up to par as those other restaurants. But, it is still a great choice in San Mateo. There is also ample parking in their garage underneath the building so you don't have to look for parallel parking on the streets."

  • "We were celebrating a 30th birthday. The printed menu welcomed the birthday person, the service was attentive, and the food was delicious with a special flare. We had an excellent dinner experience in every way!"

  • "This is a fairly expensive restaurant, and I expected better. My salad, the asparagus with the poached egg, was yucky. The main entree was good, and the dessert was excellent. A basket of bread was served, but it was cold and nothing special at all. It's not that this was a bad experience, but overall I was kind of disappointed. Meh. I will look elsewhere next time when I am looking to take my team out for a nice dinner."

  • "Another great evening at Viognier. It was my wife's birthday and they made it a wonderful occassion from printing birthday greetings on the menu to an artfully inscribed and complementary birthday dessert. The food and service was outstanding as usual. Our thanks to server Liam and manager Michael for the warm, friendly, and professional service. This place is the best."

  • "This was an anniversary dinner. They have a special menu which was nice. Wine selections great, the food selection for a three course dinner was poor. One dinner ordered the lamb chops, server suggested med-rare, but it was ordered med. It came to the table rare - sent back and came again med-rare, not med. The other selections did not come up to the standards that we have experienced in past dinners there. I would be careful on future events - - - -"

  • "Our first time here was for a Valentine's Day dinner. We both left with full bellies and high spirits. As foodies who's been to most of the Michelin restaurants around the Bay Area I'd say that the food here is on par or better than other one star restaurants. The price is above average but the food was definitely up to par with meals that costs more. The only thing strange as a restaurant for special occasion is that you need to walk through a supermarket to reach en escalator that leads to the restaurant. That environment makes it feel less romantic than some of the more classic settings, but if you're here for the food and not for the atmosphere, I would definitely recommend Viognier."

  • "This restaurant would get a much higher rating from me if they would change their menu once in awhile. They don't have specials to make up for it either. Boring to keep going back there and dine on the same thing with no enticing variety."

  • "We had not been here in several years and returned for a birthday celebration with two of our "foodie" friends. We each had their three-course meal (choices for each course) and all our selections scored highest marks for both creativity and taste. They have an excellent, though fully priced, wine list. We brought a special bottle from the cellar, and they were able to accommodate us with a very skilled sommelier who decanted it. Although located in an unusual spot (above the Draegger's Market), this is still truly an excellent, special occasion restaurant, the best I have been to in San Mateo County."

  • "We've been to Viognier several times over the past couple of years, and really love it. The food and service are always top notch. They reflect care and attention to detail, and we haven't found many other places on the Peninsula that rise to this level of quality. Wonderful!"

  • "Building your own prix fixe has happened at several Bay Area places in recent years. Viognier has made it an artform. The breadth of options on the menu as well as the exceptional quality of the ingredients, presentation, and overall preparations make it a go to spot for anyone looking to indulge or impress others. Their charcuterie and flatbreads are awesome table size starters. Their soup is always exceptional and well balanced. Truly a masterpiece on the Peninsula."

  • "Wine pairings were very good but stingy. 3 oz pour is fine for appies and dessert but not for main course! Sommelier was unapologetic and hard to locate."

  • "As always, the experience at Viognier was wonderful. It's one of our favorite, special occasion places. Each plate is crafted with all kinds of nuances -- in color, taste, texture. Exceptional! Very glad they are in our neighborhood. The only criticism I have has to do with the accommodations for getting to the restaurant if you're physically impaired. There's no direct elevator from the parking lot to the restaurant which could be a hardship for people. I am on crutches temporarily, and was a bit of a jaunt. Otherwise, the facilities are very nice too."

  • "Still our favorite Peninsula restaurant with excellent food and service."

  • "We have been there several times. The staff has always been friendly and attentive, and the service is impressively prompt. Any concerns or complaints are handled promptly and efficiently, although there were few of those. The food is always presented beautifully. The farm-to-table approach ensures that everything is fresh. My one criticism is that the menu is entire prix-fixe, with 3, 4, or 5 course options, and rarely changes. More variety and flexibility would be nice."

  • "I keep wanting this place to be better and I keep being disappointed. It's a very nice room close to my house but the food is just OK and not up to par with the prices being charged. And they just can't seem to pull off the level of service that they pretend to. There were lot of missteps from the wait staff that eventually led to a long extended apology that just left us feeling uncomfortable in the end."

  • "This was our first visit back to Viognier in several years. We had several wonderful dinners in the past and were hoping to repeat the experience with the new executive chef. We were not disappointed. The service was exemplary and they were most accommodating of dietary restrictions of one of us. We asked for some additional vegetables for a side dish and received a beautiful and delicious winter vegetable medley. A grilled octopus first coarse with lobster tomato source was delicate and superb. The scallops were done perfectly and prepared with a plentiful array of flavors. We had main dishes of duck and quail, both delicious. In particular, the duck was paired with wild rice and a lavender jus. We will certainly be back."

  • "Food was quite good and artfully prepared. The service was outstanding, the wine list was extensive though could use more of a selection in the $80-$120 range since most wine choices were in the high 100 to 200 range also a better selection of glasses of wine."

  • "Viognier is an excellent value. While the food is not as amazing as the absolute top restaurants in the Bay Area, it is very good at a price that makes it a nice value (to be clear, Viognier is not an inexpensive place to dine). Our food varied from "good" to "outstanding". Though we went on a Saturday night, it was very quiet -- a good place to go if you actually want to be able to have a conversation during dinner."

  • "The ambience was great. Food was OK. My steak was very tough and chewy. After I mentioned it the server said it was because it was well done. But it wasn't how it was cooked it was the meat. My comment was just blown off. Everyone's else's food was good and they enjoyed it."

  • "Have been several times. Good to great food. Staff accommodative to special wants. Wine list, while not "world" class, is well done. We tried a German pinot (!). The manager/Sommelier encouraged us. It was the least expensive of several German pinots (~$40) but very nice! Also, they had A-Z from Organ (WS #55 of top 100 2013) as one of the low-priced pinots - so a very well-considered list indeed."

  • "We had to grab an early dinner in San Mateo and booked here based on opening on Open Table. It was a very pleasant gastronomic surprise to have the option of dinners either a la carte or fixed courses, even if not meals for the budget conscious. The food was excellent, I especially liked the pumpkin soup with the goat milk pannacotta. My main dish, the trout was perfectly cooked and the dab of curried cauliflower puree added the right hint of spice. The Pavlova dessert, deconstructed as it was, had a bot of everything, but it all fit together nicely in terms of taste. Service was excellent!"

  • "Our party of five dined with mixed results. The first course of salad/soup was very good, the second course entrees were mediocre, and the third course desserts were very good. My husband's Hangar steak was chewy and extremely raw although he requested "slightly pink," our two guests' trout fillets were thin with little flavor, my veggie cauliflower dish was artfully created but left me hungry, and my mother raved about her rack of lamb. We were surprised that the menu did not include a chocolate dessert choice. The wait person was very attentive while ordering, but we had to flag down someone to adjust the rare steak. We have dined at Viognier numerous times in the past with good results."

  • "I have been a fan of Viognier for years and took a business group to dinner. The food was impressive and delicious. My guests were very happy with the meal. Not overly elaborate but sophisticated and simply great tasting. I have never had less than a good meal and many great meals here and I think this was one of the best. Very happy to see it going strong."

  • "Exceptionally attentive service from the staff, food is beautifully presented but some dishes are a bit too salty. Would be good if the diner has the option to choose amount of salt level, alike other eating places where we can choose amount of sugar or spiciness. The fake foie gras tastes more like pate but upon eating more, really tastes like a big chunk of butter. That kinda impacted my appetite for the rest of my meals where the real good food are. The trout looks and tastes like salmon though it was cooked perfectly. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. If you haven't been to Viognier, you should give it a try for the great experience. This would be my rare occasion restaurant for special events rather than my regular haunt."

  • "From the first glance at the menu to the excellent avocado deviled egg amuse bouche to the parade of savory innovations matching flair with taste with stylish presentation, Viognier consistently delivers some of the best in the Bay. Incredible seasonal pumpkin soup, fresh Alaskan crab salad, and a lamb bacon to die for are just a few of the recent favorites. Crafting your own prix fixe is fun and they are happy to wine match any course and any combo. Amazing and excellent. We look forward to our next visit."

  • "This restaurant is on the second floor of Draeger's on 4th ave in San Mateo. It is a well done, gourmet restaurant, The wine list is outstanding, many Italian wines, the dinner menu is essentially a Fixed Price menu for 3, 4 or 5 courses. It's a bit pricey but the food was memorable and very well well prepared, service was outstanding, the restaurant was not crowded and we could have a pleasant conversation over dinner."

  • "The pumpkin soup and beet salad appetizers were excellent, as were the roast lamb and trout. When we declined desert and ordered a press pot of coffee and our check, things went rapidly south. The coffee took 15 minutes to arrive and the staff unable to apply a store gift certificate, even though we had shown it to our waiter when we sat down, letting him know that we intended to apply it to our dinner. We waited another 25 minutes, then left paying cash for the portion of our bill net of the $100 gift certificate. This was after they had charged our credit card for the total meal cost and were unable to apply the gift certificate. Disappointing."

  • "Was organizing a group dinner for a friend's engagement party, the girlfriend/ fiancé was into French food, was looking up on yelp and found this place! Although the style of food was said to be American, it was really more of an American/ French mix style of food. I really can't remember the last time when I'd gone to an restaurant with a group of friends and were able to hear each other clearly and not feeling as though people are listening. Will definitely be back. Be prepared though, you will first think that the portions are crazy small, but I and most of my friends had ordered just the 4 coursed meal, and boy were we stuffed! Oh, and they gave the couple an complimentary dessert for the special occasion. How sweet!"
