Diner Reviews
  • "I took my fiancé here for a birthday surprise and we were both impressed. Best fine dining on the Peninsula. Stellar menu and service, romantic setting with fireplace, and they were super-accommodating regarding price-free menu to keep the birthday boy from fussing. Prices are on the higher end, but nothing near the equivalent if you were to travel into San Francisco."

  • "Some finer details need to be addressed and the staff could make some more professional improvements. Portions are adequate and most of the plates were very beautifully presented. However, I think we had higher expectations going in based on the previous reviews but were let down by other factors in the overall experience. Not in a hurry to return."

  • "I took clients to Viognier, and we had an excellent dinner - service was great too!"

  • "Celebrated my husband's birthday there. We both had the 5-course tasting menu w/out wine pairing. The meal was delicious & nicely presented although there was a disconnect between the 1st 2 and next 2 dishes. The peas & fava salad (my husband opted for the smoked pork belly) & the baby octopus were light & sophisticated while the sweetbread pot pie & rabbit roulade were hearty & more down to earth. The hazelnut mousse feuilletine was to die for - it looked & tasted way better than its description. (Compliments to the pastry chef - relieved that Viognier doesn't supply Draeger's pastry section because the macarons there look like amateur rejects!). Nice ambiance, good food, attentive service w/out airs. Will definitely return for an encore."

  • "Expensive for what you get. Tries too hard, yet misses basic. Eg cheese plate, smothered with cheap strawberry jam. Amuse bouche... cracker with some prosciutto. Strives to be more than it is and price points are not that friendly"

  • "Delicate foods and outstanding service make Viognier the best in my list. Appetizer avocado was unforgettable. The soup base of Meatball Soup were amazing. The flavor and meat of prawns were really nice. Quail was a surprise. The flavor of cheeses were impressive. The sommoilier was really sharp and knew her wine list well. She did a tremendous job! Will be back."

  • "We had a terrific time...Justin was our waiter and he was soooo very attentive and helpful. I had the wine pairing and enjoyed each glass and also the "background" of each wine. I have recommended this restaurant to many people already and will continue to spread the "word"."

  • "The staff and food was outstanding!! The staff made our dinner birthday celebration very specical and romantic, every detail was well done. Personalized menu address, flowers, fireplace ambiance, and spectacular food and wine pairing. Thank you"

  • "Voignier is a great restaurant with an attentive, professional staff, and on the fancier side. We are from out of town and needed someplace to meet with clients for dinner. Voignier was recommended to us by my brother. Our clients are local and said they will definitely be back!"

  • "Great service, not over the top interfering with the meal. Food was delicious and delivered in a perfectly timed fashion. Would definitely return for what I thought was a very fairly priced meal."

  • "We came here for my birthday on a Monday night. They never fail to please. Each dish is a visual and tasty masterpiece. This is our go to place for special occasions."

  • "I brought my girlfriend here for a surprise birthday dinner. I let the restaurant know beforehand it would be her birthday, but I did not expect them to have a special menu expressing Happy Birthday to her! They even rolled it up and gave it to her to take home at the end of the night. The wait staff was very knowledgeable about the wine pairings for each of the courses. We got the 3-course prix fixe, and we were very satisfied. The pricing was very reasonable, also. I'd recommend anyone to come here for a nice dinner or a special occasion! I'll be going back when I'm in town."

  • "I took my wife to Viognier for our 10th anniversary and it was outstanding. I put a note in the Open Table reservation that it was our 10th anniversary (but did not ask for anything special). They seated us at the table in front of the fire place and hand "Happy 10th Anniversary" printed on the menus for us to take home. The service was outstanding and the food was exquisite. We will definitely be coming back here again. The only disappointing thing about the evening was that we waited so many years to try the restaurant."

  • " This restaurant should be in the Michelin guide for Northern California. "

  • "Food was very expensive @ $200/couple (prix fix); menu was confusing -- can order prix fix or items individually, but the menu doesn't list prices . . . The choices were unclear. Food was not exceptional; the presentation seemed more important than the freshness and quality. Chairs were not comfortable for leisurely dining. Staff was the highlight -- communicative mgr, attentive staff, knowledgeable server. Regrettable that Draegers is not keeping up with Bay area quality and freshness. Unfortunate. Lunch used to be the highlight at Draegers; they have eliminated it."

  • "My husband and I were celebrating our birthdays (same day), and I happened to note this in the comment section when making the reservation, not knowing what would happen. Viognier exceeded my expectations with the special touches they added, and the service was impeccable. We will definitely be back, and will highly recommend for special occasions!"

  • "disappointing compare with 15 years ago in food quality"

  • "This restaurant has had ups and downs in its service forever. Right now it is pretty good although wine service was sometimes delinquent. The food has always been very good, imaginatively created ad executed. This time the flounder was surprisingly thick but perfectly cooked, moist and flaky. The wine list is remarkable for its multiple verticals of French and California wines, but--Oh! what prices! $25 corkage."

  • "Food was great but on the salty side (taking one star off for that). Service was wonderful and desserts were excellent! We went on a Friday night but the restaurant only had one fourth of the tables occupied. We didn't mind since we wanted to have a relaxing chat night with friends. The restaurant was a bit tricky to find, because it's located inside a gourmet supermarket."

  • "Overall, a great dining experience with absolutely amazing visual appeal. We went here for a birthday and "Happy Birthday" was printed on the menu and they gave us a birthday dessert: chocolate pudding, marshmallows, and graham crumbles. Delicious! Every dish was presented beautifully. They were all delicious except the flounder wasn't very tender and was way too salty. Scallops were perfect! The sommelier was very knowledgable and was very gracious when we requested a different wine after tasting the one we had decided upon. Service was wonderful and it was quiet, but not too quiet. A glass was shattered though, which you wouldn't expect from a high-end restaurant and the steak knife was impossible to cut with. Great evening, will return!"

  • "The much touted asparagus salad is an incoherent jumble whose ingredients don't come together, either physically or in taste. That aside, the other dishes worked quite well"

  • "This was a birthday dinner, but we did not want a candle, etc., so did not inform the staff. As we had hoped, we had excellent service from the server, sommelier, & busboy. We were asked about food alergies even before we had to note a serious allergy to mollusks ourselves. Food was very good and imaginitive. Hangar steak was flavorful and cooked perfectly mediunm rare, though a bit tougher than I expected. Very pleasant ambiance, although the party next to ours was rather loud at times."

  • "Something is happening in the kitchen at Viognier and that something is quite special. We returned to Viognier after a long hiatus. From the beginning of the meal to the close, all four at the table commented that we could not have given the level of food and service higher marks. We all had different starters. Leek soup received rave reviews, beet salad was full of flavor, scallops were a hit. Wine suggestions were wonderful. Seriously, the food coming out of this kitchen is at a new level. We all had the cod which was cooked perfectly and had perfectly paired and flavorful tidbits on the plate. Desserts like a walk in a candy store, so many treats on the plate and presented so beautifully. A fine meal w/ perfect service."

  • "Underrated. I saw only 4 stars on yelp and expected such. However the taste and presentation of the food was incredible. The service was almost too good. They were so attentive, we didn't get to have much of a confidential conversation but you can't really complain about that kind of service. Very nice people. Very professional. If the dining room changed their chairs, it might look more formal/fancy."

  • "Inside and on the second floor of Draegers San Mateo, consistent fine dining is at hand. Menu is a la carte or fixed price for 3,4 or 5 courses. Quality food and presentation along with plenty of choices from the wine menu. I want to put it in the same league as the Village Pub or the Plumed Horse in Woodside and Saratoga respectively but there is something about the service and the creativity of the menu selection that isn't quite as up to par as those other restaurants. But, it is still a great choice in San Mateo. There is also ample parking in their garage underneath the building so you don't have to look for parallel parking on the streets."

  • "We were celebrating a 30th birthday. The printed menu welcomed the birthday person, the service was attentive, and the food was delicious with a special flare. We had an excellent dinner experience in every way!"

  • "This is a fairly expensive restaurant, and I expected better. My salad, the asparagus with the poached egg, was yucky. The main entree was good, and the dessert was excellent. A basket of bread was served, but it was cold and nothing special at all. It's not that this was a bad experience, but overall I was kind of disappointed. Meh. I will look elsewhere next time when I am looking to take my team out for a nice dinner."

  • "Another great evening at Viognier. It was my wife's birthday and they made it a wonderful occassion from printing birthday greetings on the menu to an artfully inscribed and complementary birthday dessert. The food and service was outstanding as usual. Our thanks to server Liam and manager Michael for the warm, friendly, and professional service. This place is the best."

  • "This was an anniversary dinner. They have a special menu which was nice. Wine selections great, the food selection for a three course dinner was poor. One dinner ordered the lamb chops, server suggested med-rare, but it was ordered med. It came to the table rare - sent back and came again med-rare, not med. The other selections did not come up to the standards that we have experienced in past dinners there. I would be careful on future events - - - -"

  • "Our first time here was for a Valentine's Day dinner. We both left with full bellies and high spirits. As foodies who's been to most of the Michelin restaurants around the Bay Area I'd say that the food here is on par or better than other one star restaurants. The price is above average but the food was definitely up to par with meals that costs more. The only thing strange as a restaurant for special occasion is that you need to walk through a supermarket to reach en escalator that leads to the restaurant. That environment makes it feel less romantic than some of the more classic settings, but if you're here for the food and not for the atmosphere, I would definitely recommend Viognier."

  • "This restaurant would get a much higher rating from me if they would change their menu once in awhile. They don't have specials to make up for it either. Boring to keep going back there and dine on the same thing with no enticing variety."

  • "We had not been here in several years and returned for a birthday celebration with two of our "foodie" friends. We each had their three-course meal (choices for each course) and all our selections scored highest marks for both creativity and taste. They have an excellent, though fully priced, wine list. We brought a special bottle from the cellar, and they were able to accommodate us with a very skilled sommelier who decanted it. Although located in an unusual spot (above the Draegger's Market), this is still truly an excellent, special occasion restaurant, the best I have been to in San Mateo County."

  • "We've been to Viognier several times over the past couple of years, and really love it. The food and service are always top notch. They reflect care and attention to detail, and we haven't found many other places on the Peninsula that rise to this level of quality. Wonderful!"

  • "Building your own prix fixe has happened at several Bay Area places in recent years. Viognier has made it an artform. The breadth of options on the menu as well as the exceptional quality of the ingredients, presentation, and overall preparations make it a go to spot for anyone looking to indulge or impress others. Their charcuterie and flatbreads are awesome table size starters. Their soup is always exceptional and well balanced. Truly a masterpiece on the Peninsula."
