But we made a new food discovery at VHH -- the blue cornbread with honey butter. We fought over it with our friends (Alabama natives, who know good cornbread), and ultimately ordered another. We were seated and immediately attended to by a very endearing server. His recommendation on each dish was perfect. I had the arctic char that was cooked to perfection with side vegetables that burst with flavor and texture. My husband had the pork which was the server's recommendation. He went back to the kitchen to give his compliments to the chef that it was the best pork dish he had ever had. The appetizers were also creative and delicious. Desert just topped the night. The key lime pie and brownie were sublime. The wine for the price was nice. I can't wait to go back again and bring some foodie friends.Special Features:

Had a less than stellar experience 2 years ago and hadn't really been back. Decided to try it recently for a special occasion and was flat out disappointed when they didn't take the time to put a nice crisp on skillet chicken; also had brisket and watermelon - interesting combo but the brisket prepared just like St. Patrick's day - very odd. VHH is the first place I've found that combines good food, design, ambiance & service. Our drinks took nearly 15 minutes to arrive and were not made as we'd requested. The martinis were VERY dirty, and we'd requested them very dry. The food service was better, but the only notable item was the cornbread. I'd love to find the recipe as I don't intend to go back. The elements of our meals were bizarre. The heirloom tomato salad was mealy and mushy. The leg of lamb was 3 small slices, served with 3 paper thin shavings of what may have been a raw beet(?) and about 5 radishes (why?) over a dollop of mustard. Very strange & NOT worth $32. The chicken was a tiny li'l thing in a skillet w one small onion. Weird. VHH is a bit of a rip off.

Things started off uncertain when there was no cranberry juice for my usual cocktail at the bar.. (Really? Not hipster enough?) But the specialty cocktail was fine instead, although most seemed to have one-too-many ingredients. The wine list is decent, but nothing reasonably-priced & sparkling for our celebration. The menu is short with lots of seasonal elements. Do expect some more unusual options, beef tongue, rabbit, and some other accessory ingredients that weren't immediately recognizable -- good for conversation at the table. Summer salad & Arctic char = very good. Service allowed for conversation. It was quite loud in the small space for a Monday night. Mint ice cream = a dream!Special Features:

I had pork with grits, a poached egg and squash. The pork was tender and the texture of the grits was perfect. My 10 year old found the menu a little challenging, but they accomodated her with plain scrambled eggs and toast. Totally fine. We also split a strawberry pancake - German style with more of a custard texture. Delicious. The interior is well worn nostalgia with a modern sensibility. There's garden seating in the back. The restaurant was not busy and drinks took too long, all dishes got brought to the wrong person and we had to remind her about a bottle of wine we ordered. We weren't expecting four star service, just the basics of someone that is somewhat interested in making sure everything was handled correctly. And the food was just okay. Atrium down in Dumbo is a much better option (better food, service, ambience) for the same price.

For starters we had the bass croquettes with lemony greens and melon and a fascinating grassy aeoli, and the chilled cucumber soup with house made gravlox was also delicious. Entree's were house pastrami which is an ample piece braised after roasting for a delicate texture with yellow beets and smoky kale. My wife had seared then poached fish in a wonderful broth with mandolined vegetables and greens, also delicious, deserts were pane cotta and short bread utilizing fruit preserves and foamed dairy to set up a multi-fascited and exciting palate. yay! ambiance, a little loud they should add some absorbency to the walls.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.

But a simple cast iron chicken was so oversalted it was close to inedible. Chocolate sorbet was one of the best renditions ever, but a cucumber soup was thin and undistinguished. Cornbread was great. Bass and sweet potato fritters were too heavy on the sweet potato and too light on the bass, acceptable for a sports bar, not a hipster temple of gastronomy. The room is beautiful, homey, romantic, quaint, rustic. It is lively but not so loud as to drown out conversation. The cocktails were excellent. The wine list is not overwhelmingly long, but is very thoughtfully curated, featuring an excellent and interesting assortment (albeit not too many affordable options). And the food was outstanding. The relatively short menu had plenty to offer even though we had two vegetarians at the table, and everything we ordered was lovely. We ordered a second round of sides, they were so good. The rustic charm added to the ambiance. The menu is French and everything we had was delicious from homemade pastas, velvety and buttery, to the pork chops, which were tender and plentiful. When we arrived at the restaurant we were the ONLY patrons there. The hostess laughed when we asked about the emptiness and guessed that we'd reserved thru Open Table. She told us not to book online and only phone for reservations. I asked her to check us in so I could be credited the points and she laughed again and strolled over to chat with the bartender. The service was the same ALL evening, everyone acted as if they were doing us a huge favor actually doing their job. When the place filled up the noise was astounding. The menu is sadly lacking in variety, the food was meh. We'll never return.Special Features:
