Diner Reviews
  • "Vegetables were done to perfection and included seasonal selection not found in every other restaurant. Service and attention to guest was great. Have been twice now with consistently good food and great service."

  • "Vine is hands down the best restaurant in San Clemente. Whether you are sitting at a high top table in the bar area (louder, more energetic) or at a table in the formal dining room (quieter) you are in for an outstanding eating experience. The food is exceptional, the service is knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. Whatever you do, save room for dessert."

  • "There food was AMAZING. I highly, highly recommend for a special dinner. The veggies are straight from their garden in the back. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Under new ownership. we were told both times by the same waiter it was the same and both times even after we noted with our waiter the last time was not at all the same, he assured us again it was the same recipe and would be good. So now bitten twice. It was like shoe leather and out of the area, however this is the second time (April 3rd) we have been back to order the weinerschnitzel since the we all ordered it and all came to the same conclusion and everyone said never again. it may be the same recipe but what is the cook doing with it.. We will continue to come back as the food and ambience generally is very good. Too bad brought a German friend and had to be embarrassed again."

  • "Food is delicious. Had the fish special-was amazing. Don't forget to order your chocolate soufflé when you order dinner."

  • "We were the first customers through the doors at 5pm on a Sunday evening. Had Open Table reservations which I assumed would ensure best available seating. Yet, we were directed to the bar area which was ok but not nearly as nice as the formal dining area, which I did not notice when we arrived. The bar stools quickly became uncomfortable. However, service was excellent and personable. My schnitzel was very good but my girlfriend's chicken was a bit overcooked, almost jerky-like. However, the chocolate souffle was great. I enjoy small restaurants and appreciate their challenges so I support them as much as possible . Will give Vine another go if I can sit in the dining room."

  • "This was our first time dining at The Vine. We were impressed with the menu variety, wine list, and best of all the service. We have lived in San Clemente for 10 years and this restaurant really set the bar for service and food selection. It is a little pricy, so we'll go back in a few months, but if you are looking for a restaurant to bring out of town guests, this is the one."

  • "Our party of four was treated to a very enjoyable evening which started off with Gregory, who was an outstanding waiter, deftly outlining the menu and specials. Starting with the carrot soup we found the special t-bone steak tasty and well prepared as was the pork schnitzel. The two deserts shared from the center of the table, a chocolate gelato and a crumbled oatmeal cookie with vanilla ice cream "sealed the deal". We all came away feeling that we had not had such a pleasant evening of dining in a long while."

  • "Great service, great food and wine list! The specials are amazing and the desserts are yummy. Vine is now one of my favorite restaurants!"

  • "Had reservations on a Wednesday night and loved the ambiance. We split the duck wings and lamb cheek and moved on to split the schnitzel. Everything was cooked perfect and so flavorful! Great old fashioned and martinis. We will definitely go back"

  • "This was our first time dining at this restaurant, even though I've heard about it for a long time. I was pleasantly surprised how enjoyable the food was, a little small, but loved the rustic ambiance. Since there isn't much of a selection of good restaurants in San Clemente, it was nice to find this one. I will certainly come back next time Im in the area. Cindy B"

  • "Creative, well executed menu, attentive and professional staff at all levels, and, for a small restaurant , good wine list."

  • "The service was a bit slow but there was only one person on and the restaurant was packed. Server was friendly, energetic and knowledgeable. I ordered bone marrow and beet salad. Bone marrow was by far the best I have ever had. Plenty of it and it was accompanied by roasted garlic and slightly melted brie along with a small pile of salt and pepper. All and all an amazing meal on its own. I wasn't crazy about the beet salad but it by no means was bad. All and all a definite win if you check this place out."

  • "Good food. We visit once or twice a year. But they sat us in the patio area adjacent to the parking lot (they eliminated several parking spots to put up the tent where we were served). It was terrible. Cars moving in and out about 5 feet from the flimsy canvas wall separating us. I will never eat outside again (Not for $100 +) and will insist on an inside table."

  • "The food was delicious, the service was top notch, and the ambience made the dining experience very enjoyable. Will definitely be returning when in the area."

  • "Early for dinner, we sat at the bar and felt right at home. Great mixed drinks, great wine list and personable intelligent conversation. Dinner was fantastic. Very creative and delicious dishes and a wonderful attentive waiter with a great personality. We will visit the Vine over and over again!"

  • "I was turned onto The Vine by a friend of mine who knew I LOVED French 75 and I have to say, I was very pleased. The food was great; OMG the pumpkin raviolis were heaven, the filet cooked to perfection, and of course, dessert. Our waitress was great as were the cocktails and overall setup of the restaurant. My only dislike was the chairs in bar area (for the tables not the bar itself). I am tall, and the table had no foot rest so I felt like I was perched throughout my whole meal. Great job to the owners and employees - this a definite FIND in South OC."

  • "We had a great dinner, but couldn't help wondering if our sever(male) really wanted to be there. His infrequent stops by the table and bizarre comments would clearly state the obvious. He would probably like to sit and have a glass of wine with us. He did a really good job of looking busy though. As we were leaving we told another sever(female) that we will ask for her station from now on. Did I forget to say we had the guy before and had the same experience. Managers should keep an eye on that guy."

  • "Took wife for Thursday before Valentines day. I'm a foodie, she is less so. We were early - first diners in the restaurant - had quick, friendly and professional service. Enjoyed their soup of the day - cream of squash - really darn good. Followed with an order of oysters - fresh, freshly made sauces, simply delicious. My wife had two sides for dinner - fresh vegtables and their popular Mac an Cheese.. It was obvioius the veggie's came from local gardens, simply, very nicely prepared. Mac and cheese is always a favorite.and good. I had the steak of the day, a New York strip with fries and some veggies. The steak medium rare was excellent and fries were perfect - and I'm a fry guy - some seasoning, but not over done ... Great Meal."

  • "We have been eating at Vine for close to 10 years. It is our place for special occassions. The dinner menu is not extensive but everything is special, delicious, and well prepared. The scallops on the menu are perfectly wonderful. My husband is a steak man, but last weekend he ordered the schnitzel (which I have had before) and he loved it. I have two rules each time we go to Vine; (1) order the pumpkin ravioli appetizer and (2) order the chocolate soufflé for dessert! The dining room is intimate, service is great without being overly attentive, wine list is extensive although we usually bring our own bottle. The bar can get loud on a busy night, but once you are seated it's not a problem. We will see you there!"

  • "Great food and service. Nice menu that is refreshed quite often. Table was ready upon arrival and service was excellent. Appetizers excellent, main course fish was prepared perfectly and the desserts were a great finish."

  • "After reading several positive reviews subsequent to the management/ownership change, my wife and I tried Vine last weekend on our date night. What a great experience. The service was really good, the food was amazing and the craft cocktails and wine were really good. The restaurant is a little cramped, but what isn't in a beach community, and it's not cheap but given the freshness and quality of the ingredients the price is reasonable. We'll be back to sample more of the menu."

  • "My wife and I had the greatest dining experience to date. And it is not just because we are related to the Exec. Chef Jared Cook. The food, service and atmosphere were over the top. Thank you."

  • "We have lived in San clemente 9 years and keep trying the vine because we hear it changes hands and gets better. Well I can now say I am officially done I will not keep trying. I can do a steak better on my grill."

  • "Food was fresh, unique flavors, dinners were served hot, and the service was EXCELLENT. We started out with a quiet 25th anniversary dinner...just the 2 of us...we ended up knowing 8 other people dining on the patio and had a blast! The restaurant was VERY accommodating !!!! Loved this place...we'll be back!"

  • "A fav for a nice date night as the food has a gourmet flair and the main waiter is always fun and informative. This time I thought the food presentation medicre as 50% of the selections seemed hastily assembled. The real ding for me was the bad 80s music emanating from the bar area. Journey, Kansas, etc have a place but not here. I don't recall that in previous visits. That said, food taste was good, wines were as recommended, and specialty cocktails unique. The service always is playful and he made done edits to adjust to my indecisiveness."

  • "I have eaten at the Vine many times -- when it was under the control of the previous owners. This was my first visit since. We had open table reservations, but when we arrived, they sat us at a table in the bar, not in the dining room. The bar was unpleasantly loud, and a group of women were essentially screaming. (The management did nothing to address this, but did apologize to us after the dinner for the volume level. Too little too late.) I asked the hostess why we could not have a seat in the dining area, she said those tables were filled with large parties, that reservations now allowed them to seat guests in the bar, at their discretion. The food was average. Highly recommend you avoid the Vine, let it die and wait for new ownership."

  • "Russ Bendel and partner Kyle Simpson have leveraged their Fleming's & Roy's "roots" to recreate a terrific wine-centric restaurant in San Clemente. Russ and Kyle are perfect hosts, making sure every guest is made to feel special. Executive Chef, Jared Cook's eclectic menu includes many updated classics (like Pork Schnitzel with wild mushrooms) and innovative dishes (like Zinfandel Braised Lamb Cheeks). Both the menu and the wine list (with about 25 wine-by-the-glass selections) are reasonably priced and well-portioned. The ambiance is casual and fun, and the service and hospitality from the staff, exceptional. This one goes in my "rotation" for sure!"

  • "We love the Vine and it has become our favorite place to go for special occasions. The food is delicious and highly recommend the pumpkin ravioli app, the schnitzel, and the fish of the day has always been a pleaser:-). I heard the hamburgers are some of the best in OC! The ambiance is cozy & quaint and the service is always outstanding- we request Greg who's been there for many years. Can't wait to visit soon..."

  • "The food at Vine is outstanding. It is well and thoughtfully prepared. Fresh vegetables and hers are grown on site in the garden. The cheese platter is excellent, although some at our table would have preferred more pungent choices. The fall bisque was flavorful and delicious. Not too sweet, spot on. The meet dish with tongue was well liked by 3 guests. The fish was fresh and well prepared. Please give Vine a try. Food is excellent. You can bring your own wines selections for a $%20 corkage. Excellent bar drinks, not just the standards."

  • "Food was excellent, as was the service. It was Xmas Eve so this very small restaurant was crowded and noisy. We had made a reservation for 2 but Open Table kicked our res into the bar area- unacceptable for a romantic Xmas Eve dinner so the hostess rescued us and resat us outside by the heat lamp. So we ended up having a nice experience."
