A word from Vine Brook Tavern
A modern take on a colonial classic: the American Tavern
See all photos >
I have enjoyed Vine Brook Tavern's
menu and bar selection, but I was very disappointed by their service on Saturday night. The appetizer was quick, but drinks were slow and then they took well over an hour to deliver two standard entrees. We watched more than one table ordering, being served and then finishing while we waited, so possibly the kitchen really botched our order. In any case, they seem to be very short-staffed on their busiest night of the week, and they know it. Their host offered an apology, but nothing more. TL;DR: If you go on a Saturday night, stick to drinks and appetizers."

This place was a great find and
the food is just to die for. It's not far from where we live and I always look forward to going there. I am a craft beer lover and my wife is a wine drinker, and they had a terrific selection of both. They also have a very creative drink menu with house-made concoctions that everyone will love. Every time we have gone it has not been too busy so I hope this review doesn't change that. The only reason I gave them 4-stars on the food was that they cooked my rib-eye wrong once. I highly recommend this place if you're a craft beer fan, mixed drink fan, foodie, or just love to go out for a nice meal. Check. It. Out."

We had to wait a little longer
than we expected for our food. There was too much noise. The prices were high for lunch. That said, we would go back and reccommend this restaurant. Not only was our food excellent but the people at the tables around us were raving about their food. The wait staff was friendly and tried to be accommodataing when we told them that we had to get to a movie but the place was so crowded that it was difficult for them to hurry our meals."

The food was good except for the
errors the kitchen made. Did not supply the correct sides, some cold, gravy on meal ask for on side. Waitress said the chef was very busy so we could not get what we wanted. At the start the service was awful but I think it was the waitress. She was totally out of touch with service and what the kitchen could or could not do. Gil Napoleon Burlington MA"

We saw a profile of the restaurant
on you tube and the food looked great. So we gave it a shot. The owner greeted us at the door and we were seated. Service started out great but we think he had too many tables to handle. We had to wait for drinks as did a few other tables. We also ran into three groups of people we knew! Note we live 20 miles away, that must say something! The menu was great but that made it hard to choose a meal as everything sounded great. (Not a problem) The beer selection was great and the waiter chose a very good beer for my taste. The food was great! But I wish I was told the price of the specials! I was in shock when the bill came! We would go back in a heart beat!"

there was nothing great or even
good about this restaurant: no available parking, snide waiter, not much on the menu we liked, what came was so-so, dark and old interior. Why is this place still operational?"
Dined on 2/19/2014
The food was delicious, but the
casual tavern atmosphere (booths, radio music) didn't match the expense and quality of food. (veal chop $42. 3 scallops.$23)"

Great food, but too expensive a
menu for such a casual place. Bolognese and chicken dishes were yummy."

We had family in town to visit &
didn't know where to go since it was Valentine's day. We were happy that we could make a reservation & it's close to home. Everything just worked out perfectly. We arrived early & went to the bar. They did not rush us to take our table & were ready for us when we moved to the table. Our server was very helpful & pleasant, never too much or too little service. The food was very good, brown bread was awesome, the onion strings a great snack, my salmon was perfect (though I was not in love with the couscous, personal taste), burgers cooked perfectly as were the delicious fries. The chicken dish was good but the bones made it hard to eat. The blondie sundae was amazing. It was all very relaxing and just right."

I like this place a lot. It's as
close to a hipster got spot as you're going to find in Lexington. I like this place for special occasions for dinner and swing by the bar for a quick dinner after work with friends. The tables are very close together so it can be tough to have a private conversation; I just go on the later side to minimize crowd. The food is so good. A little salty, but really rich and yummy and big portions. It's a great spot in lexington, bringing that city vibe to the suburbs."

Due to horrendous traffic, we were
just about 20 minutes late, but the staff at Vine Brook Tavern made sure that we were seated shortly, and were more than forgiving, which made the service deserving of a reveiw greater than outstanding. I am not going to mention the food, for I believe it can speak for itself, but if I were forced to descride it I would say it was simply splendid. I will definetly be coming back soon."

The appetizers were quite good:
Hummus and Shrimp; corn bread; calamari frittes. Entrees were not impressive: Flank Sirloin just wasn't that tasty or tender; pasta Bolognese was pretty good. And the food is not inexpensive. We were lucky to have an outstanding waiter, who was just attentive enough, knowledgeable, but not intrusive. And the management were extremely nice to seat us promptly for our 6 pm reservation even though we had made it on the wrong date."

Menu items varied and unique
e.g.quinoa meatballs and soaghetti squash. Food however heavily salted abd buttered. Gained two lbs while eating only vegetables. Desserts were delicious."
Dined on 2/13/2014
Always a wonderful meal in a great
atmosphere; very good service, drinks, wine, and interesting food."

My husband and I always look for
vegetarian options. I chose the quinoa meatless balls with spaghetti squash, marinara sauce and basil pesto.. It was excellent. My husband ordered Winter grain salad which had among other things wheat berries, dates, almonds and pecorino cheese along with a side of French fries. He was very pleased. This was our first visit to the Vinebrook Tavern and would certainly return."

My husband and I met another
couple for dinner. The food and drinks were great and fit our varied taste (vegetarian, pescatarian, and carnivore). The waitstaff was prompt and very knowledgable about the food. The noise level was a little loud around the bar, but we were given the option to sit in the quieter upstairs area and chose not to."

It's great to have a casual
restaurant with quality of food so near to work and home."

I came here on Saturday January
25th with about 7 friends for my birthday dinner. The food was very good and it was a very nice atmosphere but it took almost 2 hours for our food to come after we ordered it! Ahhh!!! I don't know if it was because I had a large group or because it was busy, but we waited a long time for the food to arrive. Luckily we weren't in a rush. But the food was very good. I recommend the mac n cheese."

My husband and I have been here
several times before and love the ever-changing menu. Brought my mom here for her birthday this time - very attentive and friendly staff. The food was incredible as always."
Dined on 1/23/2014
I have been to this restaurant
several times and this last visit was disappointing. The pork shanks which were previously excellent were too vinegary and slathered with too much sauce. The salt cod croquettes were not very good. Wine by the glass is very expensive."

Went here on Friday evening with
my two (adult) daughters. It was recommended by a friend. Food was very good and the atmosphere was great for us -- not too quiet and not too loud. Our waiter was very good, but as the second floor filled up, we waited a little bit longer than we would have liked between dinner and dessert. Once we finished dessert, we had to wave someone down to get our check. We thought this was kind of odd because during the course of our meal there were so many different faces who showed up to serve a course, clear a course or fill our water glasses."

Vinebrook Tavern is a very welcome
addition to Lexington's paltry dining choices. The food is well prepared and the service is usually excellent. There is really only one problem with the restaurant--and it's a big one--the rooms are too noisy. I understand that the bar area, downstairs, is inevitably going to be hopping. But since there are two floors, there is no reason the second couldn't have acoustical baffling to make the dining experience up there a calmer one. We were practically shouting by the time the restaurant was busy, as was everyone else, and not because people were having a riotous time. There is no excuse for this, even if such a restaurant attracts the "still can hear but soon will not be able to" crowd."

So first time at the Vine Brook
Tavern and really enjoyed the meal. The ffod was very good - we ordered the Sweet potatoe bisque, Clam Chowder, Chacuterie board for apps - all very good. Mains were - Lamb sheperds pie, bolognese and the sirlion frites - again ALL were very good, only one desert - creme brulle - just OK. We sat upstairs in the back (not great) - the lights were the only thing that bothered me really they keep dimming back and forth the ENTIRE meal - but if this is the only thing bad with the place its a real find."

We have been wanting to come here
since the place opened. We finally got around to it and we were not impressed at all. The service was SO SLOW! My water was empty a few times. We got the cornbread and a harvest salad to start. The corn bread was the best part of the meal sadly. We didn't get served their usual bread since we got the corn bread, and thats fine. The harvest salad was okay at best, and way over dressed. My husband ordered the steak frite and I got the halibut. My fish was dry and was so under seasoned I had to use the salt they leave on the table in a bowl, not once but twice. And for me to say that, that's nuts. I'm not a fan of a ton of salt but it seemed the fish didn't come with ANY salt at all. Was very disappointing."
Dined on 1/10/2014
It was OK. Food and drinks were
overpriced. Their menus while unique in the way they present prices, it can be misleading if your not paying attention. ex ... thirty5 for $35 and wine prices "taste" might be 6 and a "glass" 10"

We had a pleasant evening and
enjoyed food and drink selection and preparation. Service was unusually slow, and because we had no where to go, it wasn't too annoying. But it would make me think twice about going back. Unfortunate because everything else about it was pretty good."

Taking the advice of the bartender
my wife got an egg on top of her veggie burger. My wife could not have been happier. My burger was cooked to a perfect medium and the beer suggestion was excellent."

Will NEVER go there again. Food is
inconsistent but, to be fair, when it's good is pretty good. It's apparent they are trying to save $$ by being stingy on portions these days. The REALLY bad news is the management. If you want to be treated poorly -- here is your place! My friend and I walked in one quiet evening. We sat at a high top for 4 by the bar and were asked to leave that table. There was no table for two so we had the option of sitting in the dining area by ourselves ( restaurant was EMPTY)so we politely asked AGAIN of we could sit by the high tops, knowing there were many open tables. but the OWNER said NO. We stayed, REGRET they got our money, and saw that the tables we sat at remained EMPTY the entire night. RIDICULOUS."

I went here for the first time
expecting to be blown away by the food. The way the food was set on the place was very nice and creative. However, the taste was decent, not to be past as phenomenal as expected for the price of the dish. Also, we had to sent back our drinks as they were way too sugary. We could not even take a sip without making a face. The waitress was very nice and always had our water glasses filled. A bit over-priced but a nice change of scene for the Lexington area."
Dined on 12/28/2013
We started with the clam chowder
which was very good as were our drinks. The main course, however, was lacking. I had the salmon dinner and it was bland and served cold. My wife had a steakhouse salad that was overpriced and, like my entree, was average at best. We wished we went to Panera Bread down the street as the food there is actually better and half the price. Not to mention that the steak salad at Panera actually includes steak. Suffice it to say that I will skip this restaurant in the future and not recommend it to others."
Dined on 12/27/2013
The ambiance was quite nice. The
squash soup was very very good! As were the buffalo pork shanks and sweet potato fries. We ordered only appetizers and sides. The server insisted that they would come out staggered, but they came out all at once. That was pretty annoying to have every one out so that it wouldn't even fit on the table. The charcuterie was really disappointing. There were 3 tiny strips of duck, which were tasteless. The other meats were not very inspired. The chop salad had too much toppings, which I thought wasn't possible. The mushrooms and brussel sprouts were ok, but too greasy. All in all, it was okay. and we'll go back for another try given the atmosphere and location, but I do hope the food and service is better."

We reserved a table for Christmas
Eve. When we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty, but we we shown to a table in the middle of the room! After requesting a table relocation, we settled in to order drinks. The waitress returned several times to inform us that they were out of creme de menthe for the first drink request, had no tomato juice for the second, did not stock the selection of brandy for the third drink and had to substitute one premium vodka for another in the fourth! The food selections were varied, well prepared, served promptly and liked by all four of us. The creme brulet dessert choice was especially good. However, I think we'll stick to Vine Brook Tavern for lunch, as we have in the past!"

For Sunday brunch on a cloudy day,
the lighting in the dining room and bar was very low. The room seemed dreary."

Really want the Vine Brook Tavern
to succeed. It's a great location and they have done a smart renovation with a very welcoming bar. The menu is varied and they have a good wine selection. The challenges are two: the service, and the price tag. I thought they would get the slow kitchen and unattentive waiters straightened out after the first few months, but the service remains only fair. Even with the place half-full, the food just does not appear in a timely way. And the price tag -- they seem to think the restaurant is located in mid-town Manhattan! I am huge fan of Hudson Whiskey, but not at $20! Entrees running up into the $30s are just a little much for a neighborhood tavern. Great steak frites, I must say."
Dined on 12/22/2013
Steak frites was flavorful but
meat was tough even med/rare. The fries had parmesan shaving and arugula bed and were awesome. I particularly enjoyed my cocktail - the Vesper which was poured in a martini glass served with lemon. Caiparinha served to my co-diners fell victim to too much simple syrup. The appetizer was charcouterie plate was blah but hummus with shrimp was quite good. The restaurant is fun and festive, great place to go with a group or as a regular bar hang out for after work drinks and apps."
Dined on 12/19/2013
The interior look and feel and bar
areas I think look really nice. Great addition in that sense to the area for a beer and an app. My food was a little disappointing. I had the trout which was over cooked a bit. The clam chowder was a little brothy for my liking, though it still tasted good. My friend loved her meal however - the lamb shepherds pie. Some items range over $30 (Albeit based on my limited experience) which I'd be hesitant to try them given the execution of my dish. At those prices your room for error is very small. I think their wines by the bottle had some pretty good selections and would come back to sit in the bar area to share a bottle over some appetizers."

Was the perfect neighborhood spot
for getting together with friends on a snowy cold night! Lots of great drinks at the bar, and the bar bites and appetizers were excellent. Sat at the high tops, and server Rob was great. A local gem."

Our last visit was just so-so,
however, this visit was awesome!! This really was a great dinner! My husband & I started out by sharing a plate of delicious croquettes. Then he had halibut w/ Yukon-chorizo hash. He enjoyed this entree very much. I loved my chicken al mattone! The portion was huge, so I had a very nice lunch the next day. The bottle of Malbec did not hurt our pocket either 8-) Service was outstanding! Thanks so much for a great dinner!!"

My husband and I were so delighted
by eating here a couple months ago and just came back for another night- both were superb. Lexington has very few non-chain restaurants and we assumed this might be a simple family pub. Not so. The Menu is classic American staples done to high end perfection. A bit of farm to table feel w the ingredients and preparation. I loved all their vegetable side side dishes - seasoned so deliciously. Brussels sprouts and sirloin frites were perfect for this cold weather (the Frites come under the tips in a crock soaked in steaks juice - yum) and my husbands bolognese was flavorful and rich. I also really recommend the hummus and shrimp plate. I also love the dark moody/historic ambience."
