Diner Reviews
  • "Gosh, forgot how good the brunch is here. Live right up the street & can't believe I hadn't been there in so long. I really like that they offer their brunch, dinner & a gluten-free menu. All my guests were covered. Definitely on my radar for a return visit soon!"

  • "Only steps away from the theatre, shopping and public transportation is Vinci. Set in a charming vintage building, Vinci is a true gem. As you enter the bar is open and welcome. The host greets you with a smile and you are seated at a checkered table or booth. The Venetian plaster walls add old world charm and a air of coziness. Large arched windows on the north side, stream in natural light without glare. The waiting staff greets you with iced water, a cheery hello, and a smile. The brunch menu is original and specializes in several imaginative frittatas accompanied by garlic breakfast potatoes. The Italian coffees are a treat. And the prices are very reasonable. It was a memorable and I will return at least a few times a month!"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our post-Steppenwolf dinner. The staff was gracious providing us early seating and attentive service. The pea salad and lamb were delectable. We would highly recommend the panna cotta for a sweet finish."

  • "Things I like about Vinci: Good food. Quiet enough that you can actually have a conversation without yelling. Rare restaurant where busboys waited until all diners had finished their meal before clearing the table (first time in several years that we encountered this). Also, check was not presented UNTIL WE REQUESTED IT! Management must have had European training. "

  • "Vinci is our "go to" place before Steppenwolf Theater! The food and service are top notch and we never have to worry about being late! A fabulous neighborhood gem!"

  • "We picked this restaurant based on the other reviews posted. We were a group of 6 that was seated at a round table which is better for conversation. The table size was great and we never felt crowded. The service was great, just attentive enough to provide great service but not to interrupt conversation. We never felt rushed and overall the food was good. Fish special got great reviews, the pork was good but salty and pasta dish was good as well. The portions were big and the wine kept being poured. We had a great experience."

  • "THE LAMB MEATBALLS WERE REALLY AWFUL; NEXT TIME ORDER THE POLENTA WITH CREMINI. THE VEAL RAGU WAS EXCELLENT. AND THE ZUCOTO (SP?) DESSERT WAS DELICIOUS."

  • "This is the second time we have been to Vinci. Even my daughter who is a real foodie loved it. It was my Mom and myself and my daughter. The staff is amazing. They are kind and helpful and knowlegeable. The food is excellent."

  • "When you'd like a quiet dinner with excellent service in a pleasant setting, head to Vinci on Halsted in Chicago. I've eaten there over the years, and have always had a pleasant setting. This was one of the few times I'd been there without a theater curtain to hurry to and it was the most relaxing dining out experience for quite some time. So, if you're hungry for good food and top-notch service and you would like to dine, not gobble down food, this is your place. The eggplant appetizer is extremely good. I found the Ravioli to be oilier and heavier than I remembered, but the flavors were still tasty. My dining companion had the Garganelli and said that it was very good! We had a Groupon which was accepted graciously."

  • "my friends and I subscribe to Steppenwolf Theatre and always go to Vinci beforehand. The food is so good - their risotto is often stellar - the service perfect and not rushed in spite of having to leave to make the 7:30pm curtain, and Clyde the bartender knows his way around a Manhattan. highly recommended."

  • "Vinvi is a wonderful restaurant on Halstead. We have eaten there frequently when we go to performances at Steppenwolf . The service is always great, the food wonderul and always consistant, and the atmosphere warm and welcoming."

  • "The waiter was off. The only female wait staff was not there. Our waiter was not on point. The food was good."

  • "Very wonderful Italian, both traditional and innovative, fare. They do pasta and polenta like you've never had before and can't wait to have again!"

  • "The appetizers never disappoint and the drinks are solid. Entrees are well done and varied from visit to visit. Just a few doors down from Steppenwolf Theatre - - it is the perfect pre- or post-play restaurant."

  • "Returned to Vinci after a 5 year hiatus . . . nothing against Vinci, just so many other restaurant choices. We were looking for a mostly quiet, neighborhood eatery with good food. Nothing fancy. Just good (okay, very good). I remembered enjoyable evenings at Vinci in years past. And we were not disappointed. Nice atmosphere, nice wine list, very good service and our food was very good. Just as I remembered it."

  • "In addition to the fantastic menu and delicious food, Vinci and its bartenders have created a list of specialty cocktails that are unique and always enjoyable."

  • "Great for before or after theater. Good wine list and cocktails."

  • "We were here for dinner between Steppenwolf shows. Had a reservation on the early end of the dinner hour and was promptly seated in an empty restaurant. Within 20 minutes, the place was full. Despite that, service was perfectly paced and attentive with us never feeling rushed or concerned that we would be late for the show. Food was excellent. The Caprese salad was well done with three different types of tomatoes instead of just sliced tomatoes. The main dish I had was (veal saltimbocca) was prepared completely differently from what I expected but was great none the less making a nice surprise. Vinci will definitely be on our list of where to go for a pre-Steppenwolf dinner."

  • "We were in Chicago for a weekend so my daughter could tour a local college. She is gluten and dairy sensitive so she rarely gets to eat Italian. Vinci's was recommended on a gluten-free blog with a list of gluten-free friendly restaurants. The restaurant itself is a nice combination of elegant and comfortable. The wait staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. But we were probably most impressed with the food and their gluten-free menu. Our meals were relatively simple and perfectly delicious. But the mussels were by far our favorite and I can honestly attest that they were the best mussels I have ever had. My daughter who is usually not a fan of seafood LOVED them. If you have the chance, don't miss this place!"

  • "service may be ok overall and we just perhaps got a bad server but she was quite rude and downright mean. I eat out often and have been a server so I know when bad service is happening for no cause. if I go back I will make sure to not have the lady with curly black/gray hair"

  • "Loved the brunch: delicious bread basket, wonderful drinks, delicious frittatas! Great service!"

  • "This isn't the best restaurant I've ever been to. But it is always very good. Service and the overall experience is often hit or miss at many restaurants, but the company that runs Vinci understands how to run a restaurant. I've never been disappointed by my experience at Vinci - and that is one of the highest compliments I can give to any restaurant."

  • "We've probably dined hear close to a hundred times, and it never lets us down. It's our go-to restaurant for high-quality, moderately priced Italian food in an intimate environment. We've got to know the staff by name, and more important - they remember ours! We come from the SW side and gladly drive past all the restaurants downtown to dine at Vinci. Very highly recommended."

  • "My husband have been in the neighborhood for years and for whatever reason had never been here. We really enjoyed our meal. The specials were very good. We'll be back esp if going to the Steppenwolf for a show."

  • "We arrived a little early for our reservation, about 20min. and were seated immediately. The waiter and staff were very accommodating and present without being annoying. The food was delicious! The appetizers were very good, the Mussels in Sauce were out of this world, the bruscetta was very fresh, and the mozzarella with basil and tomatoes in balsamic vinegar was perfect. The entrees were cooked and seasoned to perfection. My husband's gluten-free options were plentiful and he loved the Seafood Risotto. The appetizers were very good, the Mussels in Sauce were out of this world, the bruscetta was very fresh, and the mozzarella with basil and tomatoes in balsamic vinegar was perfect. Cheesecake is a must for dessert!"

  • "We arrived early for our reservation with only part of our party, and the wait staff was very accommodating. They didn't pressure us to order, and came to check on us at appropriate intervals. The appetizers were great and the entrees were wonderful. Great service all around!"

  • "Food was good, service was excellent but the tables were a little to close together for me."

  • "I love great restaurants... and this is one of my new favorites. the service was exceptional. they adjusted to our needs, they were attentive when needed and out of sight when not. the food was hot....I mean HOT, which I appreciate. it was delicious. The experienced staff knew what to propose from the menu. WOw!! I am almost hesitant to say too much, for fear that I won't be able to get a table next time I go. a great place for a nice Friday night meal. FYI, they have a vegetarian plate that is very large and very good.... I hate veggies, and I ate 1/3 of my guests dish#"

  • "We haven't been to Vinci for a while, and the food was even better than it has been in the past. The carpaccio was beautifully prepared, Don's duck was cooked perfectly and enhanced by wild mushrooms and intense greens, and my seafood pasta contained a far greater variety of seafood than I remember, with incredible depth of flavor. Wine list is good, and all prices are surprisingly reasonable for such a good Chicago restaurant. Its location next to Steppenwolf is convenient, but our dinners there predate the theater's relocation. Worth it!"

  • "Outstanding service at the bar and table-side. Excellent menu choices and daily specials. Inviting atmosphere and seating choices. We ordered appetizers, salads, pasta and main courses; each one was beautifully presented and without a hitch.....the flavors were right on! We'll be back for more."

  • "THe menu is limited but has a good variety of choices. We ordered one appetizer and it was plenty for 2 . One entree was a pasta dish, one duck and both were excellent. The portion size is perfect. THe dessert was delicious. It was nice to be in a restaurant with good food where the noise level was low enough that you can carry on a conversation with people you are dining with."
