Diner Reviews
  • "Vin Rouge has been one of my favorite restaurants in the mid-North Carolina region since they opened. I live in Raleigh and the restaurant is in Durham and I'm always up for the trip. Probably the best pommes frites in the area, and I have never ordered anything that wasn't superb. It's a great place for 2 or 10 to dine together. I think next time I'll take my daughter and we'll get the tower of oysters, lobster, and crab on ice. Eating at Vin Rouge takes care of any entertainment desired for an evening."

  • "I can always count on a great meal in a quaint and yet vibrant restaurant. Chef does a fantastic job with specials, consistency of food and overall creativity. The Chocolate Mousse must be enjoyed by all at end of meal."

  • "I found Vin Rouge an exceptional restaurant. Great care clearly went into the food, wine choice and service, with outstanding results. Would love to know the secret of the bouillabaisse."

  • "My dinner of trout almondine was fabulous! It came with potatoes and I asked not to have them, and the waitress suggested I could have another vegetable. I had the spinach with garlic with tasted delicious. The only problem with this restaurant is the parking. I circled several times, and ended up parking across a major road in the grocery store parking lot."

  • "We have now celebrated our last three anniversaries (51-53) dining at Vin Rouge and will be doing so again next year. We love the food and Durham's choose of eclectic restaurants."

  • "There were four of us, and even though we were squeezed into a rather uncomfortable corner table, that lent some European ambience to our experience. All of our meals were outstanding. Not one morsel was left on anyone's plate. I had the bouillabaisse, which I've had there before, and it's always terrific, tasty, hearty, fresh seafood. We shared four different desserts, and not one of them was below what we women would call the "orgasm factor." Again, not a speck was left on anyone's plate. Truly spectacular food. And our waitress was attentive, funny, informative, and even helped us out by taking a great photo of the occasion."

  • "I've eaten at Vin Rouge before and enjoyed it immensely. This time was no different with an excellent mix of classic dishes well prepared. The carmelized onion/goat cheese tart was outstanding. I had the classic liver and onions and it was positively delicious; particularly the sauce! A wonderful evening complemented by very attentive and polite service. Wine selection was impressive with some special (albeit pricy) selections, along with their normal mix of solid choices. My only "reservation" on giving 5 stars for food was my wife's fish (special of the day; flounder) was a bit overcooked and she wasn't blown away by the preparation. Nonetheless, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys bistro style French food."

  • "First visit. Overall food very good. Kitchen accommodated special requests. Some might consider seating a little cramped but suited us fine. Will return soon."

  • "Love the atmosphere in Vin Rouge. My husband was happy having calves liver - he can't get that many places. I had the salmon over lentils and it was excellent. And don't forget to try the pommes frites!"

  • "We enjoy dining here and have done so on multilple occasions. Food is well planned and executed. Ther service is fantastic. The wine list, service, adn the food make dining at Vin Rouge like dining at a nice restaurant in France."

  • "We had brunch. The menu was varied and the food very good. The french onion soup was superb!Staff did an excellent job and we were not rushed. An excellent father's day."

  • "My three children and I took my husband here for Father's Day. He really enjoyed himself, as did all of us. The food was as good as I remembered, as it's been a very long time since I've been to Vin Rouge. This, however, was my first time going for Brunch, when my husband and I went years ago, it was for dinner, and it too was delicious. All of our dishes looked and tasted great, but my daughter had the mussels, and they were out of this world."

  • "We try often to get up to Durham for brunch at Vin Rouge. It is always up to expectations on all counts with good menu selections, pleasant, unobtrusive service, and delicious food. Not to be omitted, is the wonderful fresh bread and rich, full bodied coffee. We shall return!"

  • "This restaurant is one of my favorites, especially for the "oysters on the half shell". It's a little pricey, but worth every penny. The staff are very friendly and accommodating and the service is promptly delivered."

  • "We went their for Fathers' Day at 1:00. Most of our party found something they liked on the brunch menu. I was disappointed because I do not like eggs and they did not have many healthy alternatives."

  • "Vin Rouge is our favorite Durham restaurant, and there are plenty of other excellent ones. Excellent food at reasonable prices, very nice French wine list, and great service. We especially like going there when weather is good for outdoor dining - they have a great patio area."

  • "Saturday night - appeared to have bigger crowd than anticipated. Waitperson was working hard, but had too many tables on the patio. The food also was less impressive than prior visits. Moules "classic" was disappointing...not sure it was the right version...milky, bland broth. Pate' and steak frites was fine."

  • "Poor service. Could not hear my husband sitting next to me over the noise. Overcrowded with very poor timeliness of seating, serving, ordering, and delivery of food. Not worth the price!"

  • "Vin Rouge has been consistently good over the years. We return again and again. The garden dining is a lovely oasis and a perfect compliment to the French bistro food. We always enjoy the food, wait staff and ambience at Vin Rouge. The only reason I would not rate the restaurant a "5" is because except for a few pricey specials, the menu does not change. I cannot necessarily fault the restaurant for this too much, because French bistro food is authentically limited in scope."

  • "Wonderful meal & total experience for Tr. Rest. Wk. One of our rare dining ventures where it's impossible to find even tiny fault w anything. The courses were even presented at the absolute perfect temperature, e.g., nicely chilled gespacho, fish served hot completely through. Wait staff very pleasant & knowledgeable. And Vin Rouge has one of the most intimate, cozy, old-world feel interior settings in the Triangle. "

  • "Food was delicious, waiter knowledgeable and fun. He recommended a very good wine. Had eaten here before and we were delighted to find that the food was still excellent."

  • "I brought my friend here who trained at the French Culinary Institute in New York City, and she confirmed what I've known all along: Vin Rouge is the best French food in North Carolina. I take things a step further and say it's the best restaurant in the Triangle. I'm always impressed by the sophisticated, casual fare produced here. To top it all off, the wait staff is smart and highly accommodating. The wine recommendations never fail to impress. Food wise, you can't go wrong, but you owe it to yourself to slather some chicken liver pate on a crostini, follow it with either the roast chicken or dijon-crusted salmon, and indulge in the apple bread pudding for your final round. Bon appetit!"

  • "A few months ago, I went with a group of friends and we had a wonderful time and I would have given it 5 stars. I came home and told my husband about it. We finally found the chance to go there for a date night and our experience was very different from my first one. We arrived at the restaurant at 7:55pm for our 8pm reservations, the hostess looked very annoyed and told us to come back when it is closer to 8pm (keep in mind that it was 5 min till). So, we stepped outside and when we came back, she was playing on her phone and ignored us. We finally got a table at 8:15 (there were several empty tables when we had first arrived, which were still empty). The music was very loud and the diner service was very slow, we waited 20 min for salads."

  • "Since we've moved to the area, a number of people have raved about Vin Rouge. We decided to celebrate our anniversary there. My hangar stake was excellent. My husband's NY strip was tough and disappointing. After complaining to our server, the manager offered to make amends and comped our dessert. Perhaps it was just a a not good piece of meat or it was not prepared well. The place was very crowded and busy. So maybe it was a one off. We are willing to try it again. "

  • "Great restaurant for not only special occasions and date night, but also for a cocktail and small bite. The specials are always creative, and I can always find something that strikes my fancy - from raw oysters to the hanger steak with blue cheese butter!"

  • "This is a nice restaurant if you want 'ordinary' French cuisine, without a lot of sauces or pretensions. But don't go expecting haute cuisine, Cajun-American or French fries--you'll get frites and other examples of middle-class Gallic edibles. An extensive and slightly expensive wine list and an unusual assortment of cheeses are presented by a knowledgeble waitperson for a reasonably-priced night abroad. Sadly the forgettable music --ill-selected Spanish/honky tonk?--was a 'genuine' drawback."

  • "Once again, Vin Rouge impresses my wife and family with an exceptional dining experience. The food is great. The trout almandine is soooo good, I can't get my wife to try anything else. The same goes for my daughter, who orders the pork chops every time because it is so good and so perfectly cooked. If you are not already living in Durham, it's worth the trip from wherever you are just to dine at Vin Rouge. One of the top restaurants in the country in my experience. "

  • "Went to Vin Rouge for my birthday dinner this past weekend, total let-down. Wonderful: oysters, wine, spinach dip as starters, but when it came to the main courses Total Letdown! The Trout Amandine was nothing more than clarified butter, with almonds on top, topped with so much lemon that left it inedible. Pork Chop was good but nothing special. Overall: amateur attempt at french food, go here for wine and oysters skip main course and I am still looking for a self-respecting french restaurant in Durham. "

  • "We asked to be seated outside on a lovely summer evening and enjoyed the space and the atmosphere. The tables were nowhere near as packed together as they would be on a truly French patio which was great for us. My wife and I were celebrating a special occasion and Vin Rouge was a perfect venue for that. "

  • "The dining room is too crowded. Guests are practically on top of one another."

  • "Our food was, by and large, poorly prepared. Overcooked seemed to be the theme. Things that couldn't be overcooked had the appearance of being manhandled. Service was friendly and accommodating, but clumsy and unrefined. "

  • " As always, a first-rate French restaurant when entertaining out-of-town guests. A Brit couple took us back to Vin Rouge when they wanted to entertain us. Jacques "
