At Vignola & Cinque Terre, we focus on an authentic European experience, and use the best seasonal ingredients, and organic, naturally grown items from local Maine farmers, suppliers and producers.
Our wine and beer selection showcases varietals from around the world that aren’t available anywhere else in New England. We’re really looking forward to sharing these "secret finds".

    My partner and I enjoyed a fabulous meal and service this summer outside and we wanted to surprise my mother when she came from Montana with a great experience. We are regulars in the Portland food scene and I am a chef so picking a location was a challenge. We choose Vignola and made our reservation, arrived on time for our 8:00pm reservation. We where greeted quickly and seated. It seemed to take longer than usual to be greeted by our server who seemed rather distracted. We ordered drinks and a cheese plate. Which came in a timely fashion and was good. We then ordered our entree's it was about 8:30pm, we observed several tables seemed to be there when we first arrived. By the time we had received our entree's it was about 9:30pm, it seemed like a long time to wait for simple entrees. Our dessert came in a timely manor and we left the restaurant around 10:30pm. All in all a good experience, just not great like it had been in late summer.

    Four of us dined here on 11/21. I asked for a table that was away from the bar scene, and we were seated upstairs at a corner table in the back of the restaurant (the original Cinque Terre). Morgan was our server, and he was "right on it" from the moment he greeted us. I wanted a certain Valpolicella, and he knew right where to point me on their wine list. I had the braised beef cheeks, the ladies shared a roasted pork loin wrapped in pork belly and the other friend ordered a seafood cioppino. Everything about the meal was top drawer, especially the service provided by Morgan! We'll certainly be back.

    We were extremely disappointed. Within 60 seconds of being seated, the waiter came to our table expecting to take our order. We had not even opened the menus. Service for the remainder of the evening was very inconsistent. The food was incredibly uninspiring- especially for the prices being charged. The "background" music was loud and out of character with the feel the restaurant was trying to create. We have enjoyed much better meals at other local restaurants. We had read some other spotty reviews but decided to take a chance. We should have gone elsewhere.

    This restaurant has two distinct personalities: the front area is more casual, more bar-like while the back area is the white-table cloth section. With the same menu for both sections, a diner can choose their environment, a nice thing. Some very interesting items on the menu, nice wine list, good prices and great service make this apace that we return to when in Portland.

    We started with the olive oil taster, the balsamic vinegar taster, cheese plate, and prosecco. All of which were stunningly delicious. Our meals, drinks, and desserts were fantastic too. You really can't go wrong here.

    The first time we visited Vignola & Cinque Terre we had a very good experience. This time was disappointing. We sat near the door and there was an icy blast every time the door was opened which was uncomfortable and had some of us keeping our coats on during the meal. We were here November 1st., so can't imagine what it would be like in midwinter. Our waiter was friendly but did not know the menu or the wine list and did not know how to wait tables, which was too bad. The food was quite good overall. We ordered the Charcuterie platter, a green salad, a pizza, some vegetable side dishes, ravioli and apple croustade for dessert. We really want to support this restaurant and see it do well, but they're going to have to up their game some.

    We have eaten at Vignola & Cinque Terre several times and always been happy. This time, it was variable and a little disappointing. My husband's Rigatoni was delicious, but my pasta with meatballs was both under and over spiced: the meatballs were overpoweringly flavored with herbs and the sauce was bland making for a strange combination. I don't know if they have changed recipes or if this was just a bad night. We will certainly go back and give it another try, but this wasn't the best. I'm giving it a good based on past experience when I have thought it was very good.

    Our dinner at Vignola & Cinque Terre was lovely. The setting is open and attractive, with clean lines, almost industrail, but in a good way--people are not siting on top of one another. We had a very early dillner, so the noise level and service might be different at high dinner time, but when we were there it was quiet, and the server we had was outstanding---helpful, cheerful, knew the menu. The food is very good indeed--the person I ate with said the creme brulee was that best she's ever had, and she orders it all over the world. It was hard to make choices because so many things looked good. And while the wine-by-the-glass menu was not extensive, it offered excellent choices. We plan to return.

    A wide variety of interesting and fresh Italian dishes. Vegetarians will have several good options, too. The wine list is excellent, with lots of unusual wines available by the glass. The also have an olive oil tasting menu. Our waitress was prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable about the wines, too.

    Celebrated wife's dinner here. We've dined here multiple times. Like the atmosphere although it can get noisy in the bar on a Friday or Saturday night. Food is always outstanding. Service very good. Black Sea Bass was perfectly prepared although we didn't expect it to be a whole fish with head and bones. Perhaps we should have asked but the waitress should have explained nonetheless. No real demerit though as the entire meal was very enjoyable with good sized portions and served nice and hot. Had the oysters as an appetizer which were very nice. Crusty peach cobbler with gelato. Served with a candle for wife's b-day. All in all, a great place to dine in the Old Port and you don't have to call a month in advance to make a reservation!

    This restaurant was truly one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever been to and that includes Italy and NYC. The cheese plate was phenomenal. My pasta dish of pork ravioli was handmade pasta with a very rustic sauce. The entree of brasciole over mashed and green beans was incredible. Lastly, the service was impeccable. Leaving Portland today and I will miss Vignola & Cinque Terre.

    We have enjoyed eating at Vignola & Cinque Terre several times. The food is great, and we especially enjoy sharing small plates and appetizers. We have typically eaten there on a week night when we can get a great table in the window of Vignola. This time it was a Saturday night, and we were seated on the balcony in the Cinque Terre section of the restaurant. It was unbearably, deafeningly noisy. Great food, unpleasant atmosphere.

    Used to be a "go to" standard for us but it has gone downhill. At 8:30 on a Sat. night, they were out of monkfish which is an entre on the menu and an ingredient in the Zuppa de pesce. Ordered the Zuppa and they didn't even bother to substitute another fish! Waiter said "it was probably already made up" and we were charged full price for the dish! Too many other good restaurants in Portland. Sorry Vignola, no longer on our list.

    Farm salad was just romaine with some parm. the honey dressing was nice but expected more from salad. Bread was good, wine good. dessert was good too. Rest of meal was just so so really. Price was too hefty given quality as compared with other downtown restaurants. Waiter was passable but we had feeling that he was a young guy that thought he had better things to do. We figured we'd better try the place as we have hit most of the upper scale dining in town. Not likely to be high on list even though it could have just been an off night for them (September 12, a Friday).

    Always love this place. They have the best cheese plate selection. We had the bass, a full fish dish. It was good, but very oily and fat. I can not say it was my favorite, but I ate every bite. It came with new potatoes which I picture as small, but these were quite large. The green beans were under the fish, so VERY oily. I can not say this meal was my favorite, but it wasn't bad and I still love this restaurant. We had a nice window seat with CUSHIONED chairs. I often chose a restaurant because of cushions on the chairs. I want to be comfortable sitting for a nice meal.

    Against their huge windows. Reservations a must nearly all year long. It got crowded on a Thursday night in Sept after 8 o'clock. I went with a veal steak, but thrir small plates (?), appes and pizzas, are the real deal. Huge wine list, excellent service and their people are well equipped to help with the wine. Vignola's has great bar tenders, and their bar stays very busy. This is a great restaurant in winter! Warm, bright, good food, great people.

    Vignola used to be our go to restaurant when visiting Portland and we have referred lots of friends over the years. Unfortunately this time we found the menu limited (not everyone likes lamb, beef & swordfish), the food over-priced and not good (sticky pasta with no taste) and the service (at least ours) terrible (slow with everything, we had to wander around the restaurant to find someone to bring us bread, pepper, pasta spoons; server did not follow up to see how the food was). We will not be returning to Vignola.

    The staff was gracious, friendly and professional. Highly attentive to our every need. Food was well prepared, traditional Italian style tweaked to an edge with balanced seasonings, but still allowing the natural flavors to stand out. The gelato desert sampler was a perfect capo.     I ate here with 3 others and we all agreed that the food and overall dining experience was a 6 out of 10. We were seated in the back half of the restaurant, which we were the only people there for most of our meal. The front part (bar area) when we left was much more happening. Our food was "ok." I had the beef braciole which was slightly over cooked, but edible while the others had the fettuccine and rigatoni which were average at best. Appetizers were the best part of the meal- Vignola pizza was nice as well as the calamari and Pecorino cheese sampler. Everything was decent, but not "wow!" Combined with the boring atmosphere in the back half of the restaurant, we probably wouldn't go back. A positive was the staff- knowledgable and nice.
