I've been to Vidalia several times and it is one of the top restaurants in DC. It is southern comfort food done in an elegant French style. Each course is creative and beautifully presented. Did the 5-course tasting menu this time and the highlights were a cold buttermilk soup with smoked scallops, and a rabbit loin wrapped in pancetta atop a nasturtium pesto! The service was also impeccable and the sommelier helped us pick a fantastic wine that was moderately priced. It was a 5-star experience from start to finish!

The southern-fried Sweetbreads with waffle & asparagus was wonderful! we both had the Quail and the truffle mousseline was delicious. My wife wasn't sure about the truffles but they assured us the flavor wasn't anything like 'truffle oil' and they were so right! It was amazing!

Not at all what I was expecting. I spend a lot of time in the the south. I eat a lot of southern food and love it. Vidalia offered a nice spin on southern classics. However, it was WAY too formal. I felt the restaurant was conflicted. It lacked the southern charm of the low country. The food was good. Nothing to rave about. The food (like the atmosphere) was too formal...its presentation, the fine dining spin, the service...all to formal for southern food. If Vidalia lost it's formality and embraced its southernness, the restaurant might fill its many empty tables. And no coconut cake on the menu! How does a southern restaurant not offer coconut cake!?! It is a southern staple.

I keep hoping for more from Vidalia and once again it was good enough, but nothing more. I've said before it really does benefit from a lack of high end competition in the area now that others are moving (or have moved) east.

Although I made the reservation a week in advance, we were seated at a lonely table in the bar, and not in the dining area. It felt like we'd been exiled. Our waiter rarely came by and we had to hunt him down to pay the check. Given that we at lunch during our work break, it was rather stressful. The food itself was good, though.

We had an incredible evening at Vidalia. The service was impeccable , the food was perfection as was the attention to detail. We did the tasting menu and loved that they allow you to choose which items you would like in your tasting from their entire menu. There were three of us dining and we all chose different items which made the tasting really unique and wonderful. I would highly recommend!!!

Shady Lane salad great. Foie Gras so so. Golden tile fish outstanding. Branzino ok. Bacon wrapped rabbit outstanding. I asked for the lamb rib eye to be cooked medium. It arrived raw, hardly edible. It takes only one bad dish to ruin one's memories of an otherwise fine experience. I loved the elegant, quiet setting, attentive servers.

All of the food was delicious and the service was excellent. The noise level was low so you could hear the other person speak at your table without shouting. We will definitely dine here again.

The first thing that turned me off is where the host seated us. He seated us at a table that was very close to two other tables on both sides. There was plenty of other seating in the restaurant that could accomodate us. We eventually were reseated to something more intimate. We ordered the shady lane salad. It was sparse with barely any onions, radishes, peaches, and pecans and the goat cheese was a smear on the plate. I attempted to order the tile fish; they were out of it. I ordered the braised ribs and my husband ordered the salmon. His salmon was cooked improperly twice and he finally settled on duck which was decent. The peach crisp was cold and barely palleable. I will not return to this establishment.

I have a soft spot for this place. It was the very first restaurant I ate at when I moved to DC. I didn't know this was one of the best restaurants in DC at the time. I had just moved into my friends place 30 minutes before hand. I was sweaty and I was in jeans and t-shirt. Yet the service is wonderful - they didn't blink an eye and treated me like their usual classy clients. The food was simply amazing. Classic, refined southern cooking. Always with fresh ingredients and always with a nice twist. There's a reason why I go back at least 2-3 times a year since I moved to DC.

The wait staff was very kind, but seemed entirely untrained in waiting at a nice restaurant. I had to make a special request for a glass of wine after my food was served. They did not clear our plates until they had sat quite awhile and the time between courses was uncomfortable, yet the wait staff never gave us any assurances. The guests seated next to us ordered a special side dish and the waiter told them they couldn't have it because it would take 15 minutes and they would be done by then! Those same guests were still seated when we left 45 minutes later. We were seated in a side room, and there was no mood music, so we ended up hearing the conversations of the parties near us. The food itself was decent.

Dined during restaurant week with husband and 3 children for my birthday. Was a bit concerned that the service and food might not be at their best as it was restaurant week, but it was a wonderful dinner. Late Friday night seating, table was ready in a cozy alcove. Service was impeccable. Server provided drink samples to children prior to ordering. We ordered a wide range of dishes including: heirloom tomatoes, pork fritter, crabmeat gazpacho, ribs, quail, pork chop, shrimp and grits, roasted onion, mac-n-cheese, and steak. Everything was good. Even my picky eater 5 and 9 year olds really enjoyed the food. Admittedly expensive dinner for children but well worth it! I will return as the full menu has even more amazing offerings.

My husband and I went for restaurant week and were immediately impressed by the number of options on the menu. The peach gazpacho was extremely flavorful and their vidalia onions in oxtails are not to be missed. The shrimp and grits did leave me wanting, but my husband and I agreed that we would come back of regular dinner service in the near future.

This was one of the best restaurant week experiences I've ever had. I thoroughly enjoyed everything I ate. For a starter, I had the crab cake--full of crab atop a peach/veggie type of mix. For an entree, I had shrimp and grits and the shrimp were huge! For dessert I had the peach cobbler/crumble type of dessert. Excuse my lack of description but just know that it was good. The menu was available online which was another selling point. They offered tons of choices and everything was ah-may-zing.

While everything that we had was good food; pasole, fritter, short ribs and chess pie, the entree and pasole needed salt and the lemon chess could be more tart. Now, the crab cakes were very good. No filler and had a great acidity. They may be small, but worth it.

This is normally such a good restaurant with well prepared food. It was disappointing the other night when one of our table mates had to send the almost completely raw swordfish back to the kitchen, only to have the next piece come out a bit more done, but too tough to eat. Management never came by the table, but did comp half her meal cost. Again, normally this is a very good restaurant, which is why the other night was such a disappointment.

Many hi-end D.C. restaurants cut back or cut corners during Washington Restaurant Week. Not Vidalia. Year-to-year, the best WRW value for lunch, even dinner. Shrimp and Grits and Pecan Pie get better each year. How do they do that? BTW: best waitress I've encountered since Vermillion 4 years ago. She earned every penny of her 25%. Advice = set your calendar to February and book your Vidalia lunch for sure.

The food was amazing, but if you're looking for a treat out during the work day, you might want to go somewhere else. Went with a group of coworkers (there were 5 of us) and had a 12:15 reservation. Both the first and main courses came out really slowly. By 1:40, we were just getting dessert menus. Ended up asking for dessert to go and raced out as soon as we were done paying our bill. Again, the food itself was delicious (as always), just surprising that a downtown restaurant would be so slow getting food out at lunchtime where everyone is coming from work.
