Diner Reviews
  • "Shady Lane salad great. Foie Gras so so. Golden tile fish outstanding. Branzino ok. Bacon wrapped rabbit outstanding. I asked for the lamb rib eye to be cooked medium. It arrived raw, hardly edible. It takes only one bad dish to ruin one's memories of an otherwise fine experience. I loved the elegant, quiet setting, attentive servers."

  • "We came here for Restaurant Week 2014 Dinner to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. Vidalia added a personal touch of printing "Happy 3rd Anniversary!" on our menus. All of the food was delicious and the service was excellent. The noise level was low so you could hear the other person speak at your table without shouting. We will definitely dine here again."

  • "The selections were inconsistent in their quality. Most enjoyed was the beef ribs. There was nothing for us to rave about after such great expectations. although the service itself is tobe commended."

  • "We can see why they receive the Distinguished Service awards. Our server was knowledgeable, informative and attentive. Excellent wine and very good food."

  • "I have a soft spot for this place. It was the very first restaurant I ate at when I moved to DC. I didn't know this was one of the best restaurants in DC at the time. I had just moved into my friends place 30 minutes before hand. I was sweaty and I was in jeans and t-shirt. Yet the service is wonderful - they didn't blink an eye and treated me like their usual classy clients. The food was simply amazing. Classic, refined southern cooking. Always with fresh ingredients and always with a nice twist. There's a reason why I go back at least 2-3 times a year since I moved to DC."

  • "Vidalia provides very good food and excellent service, but best of all, Vidalia is a quiet restaurant, where one can relax and have a peaceful meal."

  • "The wait staff was very kind, but seemed entirely untrained in waiting at a nice restaurant. I had to make a special request for a glass of wine after my food was served. They did not clear our plates until they had sat quite awhile and the time between courses was uncomfortable, yet the wait staff never gave us any assurances. The guests seated next to us ordered a special side dish and the waiter told them they couldn't have it because it would take 15 minutes and they would be done by then! Those same guests were still seated when we left 45 minutes later. We were seated in a side room, and there was no mood music, so we ended up hearing the conversations of the parties near us. The food itself was decent."

  • "Dined during restaurant week with husband and 3 children for my birthday. Was a bit concerned that the service and food might not be at their best as it was restaurant week, but it was a wonderful dinner. Late Friday night seating, table was ready in a cozy alcove. Service was impeccable. Server provided drink samples to children prior to ordering. We ordered a wide range of dishes including: heirloom tomatoes, pork fritter, crabmeat gazpacho, ribs, quail, pork chop, shrimp and grits, roasted onion, mac-n-cheese, and steak. Everything was good. Even my picky eater 5 and 9 year olds really enjoyed the food. Admittedly expensive dinner for children but well worth it! I will return as the full menu has even more amazing offerings."

  • "We ate at Vidalia during restaurant week. The menu offered a wide selection of excellent dishes. The service was impeccable. A great time!"

  • "Was expecting good meal for restaurant week and wasn't disappointed. All the dishes were terrific and wine suggestion was spot on! Service was excellent and we never felt rushed to finish and turn over a table. A totally satisfying experience."

  • "My husband and I went for restaurant week and were immediately impressed by the number of options on the menu. The peach gazpacho was extremely flavorful and their vidalia onions in oxtails are not to be missed. The shrimp and grits did leave me wanting, but my husband and I agreed that we would come back of regular dinner service in the near future."

  • "We were disappointed. I asked about the the seafood and was advised that it was all frozen. The shrimp in the shrimp and grits had a rubbery feeling. The duck breast also frozen was extremely tough. Would not return."

  • "This was one of the best restaurant week experiences I've ever had. I thoroughly enjoyed everything I ate. For a starter, I had the crab cake--full of crab atop a peach/veggie type of mix. For an entree, I had shrimp and grits and the shrimp were huge! For dessert I had the peach cobbler/crumble type of dessert. Excuse my lack of description but just know that it was good. The menu was available online which was another selling point. They offered tons of choices and everything was ah-may-zing."

  • "With a delightful Restaurant Week menu and a commitment to great service and food presentation, Vidalia is always a crowd pleaser!"

  • "While everything that we had was good food; pasole, fritter, short ribs and chess pie, the entree and pasole needed salt and the lemon chess could be more tart. Now, the crab cakes were very good. No filler and had a great acidity. They may be small, but worth it."

  • "Three of us arrived for lunch during Restaurant Week. While the restaurant was full and busy, this had no impact on the ambiance or the quality of service. A slightly more salty duck confit than expected, but the other courses (and my friends' meals) were quite fine. Have a church lemonade!"

  • "went rest. week and found after arriving before 7 p.m. that no happy hour prices during rest. week which was not mentioned on the web sight. BOO. food was good as well as the service."

  • "The food was excellent! Enjoyed every bite. The entire party did. Service was super too. And two of us who are light drinkers enjoyed the "taste" option. Nice to be able to get a smaller glass of wine vs. not having any at all."

  • "This is normally such a good restaurant with well prepared food. It was disappointing the other night when one of our table mates had to send the almost completely raw swordfish back to the kitchen, only to have the next piece come out a bit more done, but too tough to eat. Management never came by the table, but did comp half her meal cost. Again, normally this is a very good restaurant, which is why the other night was such a disappointment."

  • "The Videlia Restaurant Week Lunch menu was outstanding. Many restaurants don't give you such a wide selection and the food was wonderful. The only problem was quite slow service. An hour and a half for lunch is a stretch."

  • "Many hi-end D.C. restaurants cut back or cut corners during Washington Restaurant Week. Not Vidalia. Year-to-year, the best WRW value for lunch, even dinner. Shrimp and Grits and Pecan Pie get better each year. How do they do that? BTW: best waitress I've encountered since Vermillion 4 years ago. She earned every penny of her 25%. Advice = set your calendar to February and book your Vidalia lunch for sure."

  • "The food was amazing, but if you're looking for a treat out during the work day, you might want to go somewhere else. Went with a group of coworkers (there were 5 of us) and had a 12:15 reservation. Both the first and main courses came out really slowly. By 1:40, we were just getting dessert menus. Ended up asking for dessert to go and raced out as soon as we were done paying our bill. Again, the food itself was delicious (as always), just surprising that a downtown restaurant would be so slow getting food out at lunchtime where everyone is coming from work."

  • "Dined for restaurant week. Started off with the Pork Fritter. Flavor was ok. Enjoyed the fried green tomatoes more. Shrimp and grits was delicious. Peach dessert would have been more enjoyable with more crust. Front staff were having conversations that should take place in a break room not in front of guests."

  • "Vidalia remains a classic in the Washington DC dining scene. Vidalia has the absolutely best lunch menu in DC filled with regularly updated fresh ingredient offerings. The most recent treat was a peach gazpacho which was truly heavenly. Service is top notch without being intrusive, provided by wait staff that know their menu inside out. Don't miss an opportunity to enjoy Vidalia."

  • "I was excited to try their shrimp and grits as the server said it was their signature dish. It was just ok. Not very flavorful, the shrimp were not seasoned. Quite a disappointment if this is what they are known for. The center of the restaurant is quite nice, but we sat in the side room which was bland at best. After clearing the table after appetizers, they brought out the dessert menu, not even noticing we have not had our main yet. This is supposed to be a fine dining experience, right? Dessert... what a disappointment and it could have been so good! Cold cobbler and pies with ice cream?? Cold peach cobbler? If this is a southern fine dining experience, you should know better; it should be warm! All in all, just ok."

  • "Decided to try Vidalia for restaurant week. It was my first visit, and I was pleased to see a VERY robust Restaurant Week menu. I dined with a friend and between the two of us we ordered the Steak Tartar and Smoked Salmon appetizers. Both were tasty, but neither "wowed" us. However for our main course we shared the Porkbelly and Salmon entrees, which were both absolutely delicous. The best part to the meal by far was our dessert, the Pecan Pie, which was absolutely the best I've ever had. The peach crumble was tasty, but didn't hold a candle to the pie. Our server was excellent and made great suggestions. I would definitely go back outside of restaurant week."

  • "I visited Vidalia during restaurant week and it's a fabulous value. Our server extrodinaire, Larry was great and made wonderful recommendations. The macaroni and cheese, succotash (lima beans/corn), collard greens, crab-watermelon gazpacho (I know, right) were spot on. My colleagues enjoyed their entrees but there were 2 dishes that just didn't' make it. The short ribs while tender were bland. Not even the nice sauce could help them. And the dessert, the country peach crisp tasted like a healthy version of what one really desire. Despite those 2 dishes, the pork chops, flourless chocolate cake, crabcake appetizer and the salmon were all divine. Would I come again - you bet!! But, I'd steer clear of the short ribs and that dessert."

  • "I had a bad experience at Vidalia many years ago and hadn't been back since. But some friends wanted to go there for Restaurant Week, so I decided to give it another try, and was very glad I did. The service was excellent and the food was wonderful. I would certainly return again."

  • "I'm so glad Vidalia participates in DC Restaurant week...my two colleagues and I all had lunch here, and they made their entire menu available to us for our 3-course luncheon. The food was fabulous (only complaint was that the catfish filet was a little small), beautiful presentation, service was great, and we all plan to return with our sig others to share this fabulous find! Thanks so much!"

  • "Excellent as always! We have been coming for 15 years and the food, service and attention to detail have never wavered. The shrimp and grits is a perennial favorite. The cocktails in the bar were very nice due to the fact that it was not overly loud or crowded. True to character, the wait staff brought us a beautiful cookie tray gratis when they found out we had a wedding in the near future."

  • "We celebrated a birthday at Vidalia's.... the waiter was wonderful. We had the five course tasting meals which were each unique and delicious. I have an allergy to cow's milk and the waiter/staff did an excellent job making sure that my food was perfect. It is so enjoyable to have a meal and not have to worry about a problem. I am looking forward to returning again... The summer truffles were excellent!"

  • "The food is excellent. My group was very happy to be able to carry on a coversation without having to raise our voices to be heard. The service was some what indifferent and the manner of the servers was too casual for this restaruant. When I make a request of the server I expect to hear "yes (or no) Ma'am" not "no problem." Same for the busboys."

  • "Visiting DC, Vidalia was recommended by a family member. We had an early dinner with with our hosts. Happy hour cocktails at the very nicely appointed bar in comfy sofas were followed by a fabulous meal. All of the selections were outstanding. The crab cakes were perfect with appetizer or entree size plates. The oyster pan roast appetizer was melt in the mouth perfection, as was the lamb ribeye entree. The ahi tuna entree was also excellent. Our service was gracious, knowledgeable, and spot-on with wine recommendations. Prices were moderate to upper moderate for a DC restaurant. An elegant treat for anyone with a curious and discerning palate."
