  • "If you are tired of the "lets go to a Steakhouse" for business dinners, Vidalia is a great choice. A very interesting menu, it advertises to be Up Scale Southern American, but I think it's much more. The portions are wells sized but if you hungry add a an appetizer. Specials are always interesting and worth trying. Prices are reasonable for DC. I would recommend reservations after 8 even on a weeknight because it can get busy. Well worth a visit."

  • "I was visiting DC and looking for a place for dinner close to my hotel and came upon Vidalia on OpenTable. It was within walking distance and when I arrived, I was immediately seated. The server was very polite and friendly. I had the crab cake for an appetizer (available as an entrée) and it was wonderful. Mostly crab meat with a little bit of binder. For the main dish, I had the goat. It sounds strange but it was quite good. It was a nice sized medallion, extremely tender, and the flavor was very delicate; not gamy at all. I didn't have room for dessert but I'm sure they are fabulous. Overall, a very good experience, though it certainly is not an inexpensive experience."

  • "We waited over an hour for our food to arrive. The food was ok, not over the top. We asked the waiter if it typically takes that long for food to arrive and he said no, but didn't offer to comp anything on the bill, even though our question was obvious that we were not happy with the service. The duck was a little fatty, and the fish I had a rubbery texture. Might have been an off night for them?"

  • "The food was delicious although the entrees took a very long time to arrive (over 30 minutes after we had finished our appetizers). The lemon chess pie was one of the best desserts I have ever tasted, and the shrimp and grits was perfect. All in all, it was well worth the trip even with the long wait and the generally high prices."

  • "If you are tired at dining in large restaurants that are nothing more than upscale cafeterias and where you cannot hear the person sitting 5 inches away from speak and you are sitting in the lap of the neighboring table, go back to Vidalia and be treated like an adult. Service is very good, without being "formal" or over-bearing (unlike Marcel's), food is well prepared and to order (and delicious) and, best of all, you can carry on a conversation without screaming at each other. Tables are set well and far enough from one another so you are not enjoying your neighbor's meal or conversation! Enjoy a real dining experience for a change!"

  • "My sister and I dined here when I was visiting her in D.C. Everything was delicious! The bread was amazing, the shrimp and grits had a ton of flavor, and the dessert was so tasty! We were really thirsty from sightseeing all day and our water glasses stayed full all evening. I thought the server was a little pretentious, but the hostesses were very friendly. Overall, it was a wonderful night!"

Winners included beet salad starter, oyster roast, frogmore stew. Over-priced wines were available by glass or bottle."

I recently had an extremely good entree, Frogmore Stew, which was outstanding but not enough for an appetizer, no less a main course. At $30+, the value was questionable."

  • "It's a trendy and attractive ambiance that has kept up with the changing demands of consumers for over twenty years. The night we visited Vidalia we were heading to a show, so we had the first time slot available for the evening. We started at the bar with cocktails and moved to the dinning room when our table was ready. For an appetizer, we started with country ham board that had a variety of mustard and pickled vegetables, along with two different types of ham. We ordered two entrees; crab cakes and the wagyu ribeye. For dessert, the pecan pie. Every course was more than enough. I can guarantee that no one has ever left this restaurant and said, "I'm still hungry"."

Our meal--and we ordered appetizers, main courses, and desserts--was simply superb. Made with the very best ingredients, each dish amazed us with its flavor, its depth, and its visual beauty. Together with dreamily efficient and friendly service, a beautiful dining room, and an attentive and knowledgeable host, the entire night was the kind of dining experience one always hopes for but rarely achieves. It feels like the restaurant is coasting - a number of dishes have been on the menu for years through multiple chefs and the kitchen is just going through the motions. Dull, flavorless food with no spark. The place was crowded with business people on a Friday afternoon, but that is probably the result of so many other places in the area closing, such that there are very few non-steak fine dining options. It's a shame - I really used to like this place."

  • "This lovely restaurant would have been outstanding if the food had been hot, not warm. The crab cakes were outstanding. The special appetizer of skate cheeks were executed superbly but ever so slightly not fresh with a slight ammonia taste. The server did offer to take it off the bill, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. The goat three ways was outstanding but again, not hot. There was a big party that evening and the servers were running at top speed. But should not have been a problem for a restaurant of this caliber. I'm sure it was an exception as service was professional and friendly. Will definitely go back on our next visit."

  • "What a perfect evening we had at Vadalia to celebrate my husband's 60th bday ~The ambience was excellent, food exceptional and service stellar. From Jill (we think that was her name) to the wine sommelier, they doted on him but balanced the service beautifully by giving us time alone. We were seated in what we coined the "bday" corner with two other couples celebrating bdays so the energy was fun. Vadalia is a long time favorite of ours and we will be back!"

  • "Tasting menu is the way to go if you're hungry. 5 courses and you get to choose a dish from each section of the menu, they just give you smaller portions. Their craft cocktails are delicious, and for the most part are extremely complimentary to the food. The cornbread they give you is made to order and crazy good. Bethany, our waitress, was very nice and helpful, and was great at explaining our food and beverage options, and also at making sure we didn't feel rushed over the meal. Would happily come back for a second go around in the future."

The pairings were spot on, the food was spectacular and the service was beyond compare, better than The Inn at Little Washington! While the restaurant seemed small, there was no chairs or tables being bumped by wait staff or other guests-this can really get annoying if your table is close to a busy spot as ours was (the steps)."

  • "I make a point to bring clients to Vidalia when I'm in Washington. It's a little unusual--the entrance is easy to miss, and the restaurant itself is down a flight of stairs. This gives a sort of "hidden gem" impression, although it's actually quite well known. Once you're in, the food is unique and spectacular and the service is great. I have several favorites on the regular menu, but tend to get drawn in by the list of specials, which is typically as long as the menu. I'm generally not a very adventurous eater, but Vidalia draws me out and I've never been disappointed. Expect to have a great, very distinctive meal (and pay for it)!"

I would keep the nutmeg out of the macaroni and cheese though. The chef sent out complimentary one spoon appetizers which was a really sweet gesture.   • "Should have opted for the $19.90 menu as going off the lunch menu with. $48 bottle of wine resulted in a $150 bill before tip. Onion soup was neither oniony nor anything-y really. They should spend less time on presentation and more time on infusing this signature dish with flavor. Shrimp and grits were fine, although slender portions. Asked for extra onion bread and got 2 pieces and no butter - seemed stingy. Desserts were probably the best thing about our lunch. Excellent ocean pie and solid lemon chess pie. Have eaten here numerous times but this time was a real let down and I can't see going back unless I do the set menu. On a positive note, the waitress was chirpy and competent."

  • "Went for a business lunch and was really wowed. I ordered an appetizer of lamb wrapped in bacon. I almost never order lamb as I don't like the taste, but I thought I'd give it a try with the bacon. It was really, really good. I wish I had ordered it as a main it was so good. The rockfish main was good, but paled in comparison to the appetizer. Dessert was also a fantastic chocolate wedge that made me want more. With a pre-fixe lunch menu of 19.90 this is a fantastic bargain! Service was attentive without being obsequious. Although the restaurant is located below ground, so no natural light comes in, it is well lit and I didn't feel it took away from the atmosphere. Overall, a great dining experience, I'd go again outside of business."

  • "We ordered the 1990 three course lunch. First Course- Both of us ordered theOnion Soup with pieces of Duck, and beans. It was very good and well presented. Second Course- Rockfish with grits and ham, fish was cooked well, but the dish was pretty underwhelming, fish lacked seasoning and the really did not help. Just not a very good dish, not really bad, but would not order again and and not at all worth a few 2.00 supplement. Lamb Ragout, it was good, again a bit under seasoned. Third Course- Desserts, Goat Cheese Panna Cotta, this was more of a cheese course then a true dessert, topped with tart cherry and with a bit of sweet syrup on the plate. It was really a bit big given the savory aspect. Flourless Chocolate cake, was good."

  • "This was our second visit to Vidalia and we were not disappointed. We started with cocktails and then split salads, main courses, and dessert. The wine steward helped us out on picking a great bottle of California red we were not familiar with. The wait staff was very helpful and food was nicely paced. All the dishes were well prepared, with good temperature and taste. Note that this restaurant is "downstairs", meaning no street level views or above. That's no problem for us, due to dining quality, but if you are looking for a view, you will not get it here. Otherwise, highly recommended!"

  • "Hard to find a place in DC that is not off the scales on noise level. Vidalia is always a reliable option for a great meal where you can actually have a great dinner conversation. I am from Charleston SC and frequently crave some of my southern favorite dishes. Vidalia serves them with and interesting twist. I am constantly on the hunt for a great grilled smoked pork chop. Even tho Vidalia's is not smoked...its' pork chop is great...sauced with a slightly sweet glazes topped with 3 fried oysters was fabulous. It sat on a bed of greens and fiield peas. This is btw a perfect New Year's day dinner...where you have to have pork, collards, and hoppin john to ensure good luck for the next year. Great service...and a little good luck to boot!"

  • "I don't even like southern cooking, but I loved this place. There was a lot of attention to detail, such as refolding your napkin if you got up to use the restroom. Presentation was excellent. I highly recommend the Espresso Creme Brulee."
