Having been a long-standing Vidalia fan, I was disappointed in the revised preparation of one of my favorite appetizers, an oyster stew. What was once a fresh oyster preparation in a savory creamy broth was now prepared with fried oysters in an over-salted base. I have heard similar feedback on disappointing changes in the shrimp and grits entree....one of the outstanding staples that put Vidalia "on the map".

A friend and I went to Vidalia, and we both selected the five course $80 tasting menu. One of the things that I LOVED about it was we were each able to select our own courses rather than having to select ones for the table. This enabled us to try ten menu items rather than only five. Additionally, our server was extremely knowledgeable and offered suggestions for wine pairings for each course. Rather than suggesting the most expensive options on the menu, she gave us options across the price ranges. The meal itself was one of the best I've had in Washington, and I especially recommend the tartare and the carmel cake.

The restaurant is billed as Southern, but it is actually more sophisticated than that, although there are some nods to Southern specialties such as fried oysters, cornbread and pecan pie. The atmosphere is classy (although noise from the popular bar can sometimes be a problem). We also enjoyed the well-crafted cocktails.

This is a very nice restaurant for civilized dining. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The noise level was moderate. We could converse easily. Our server, Jill, was attentive without being overly intrusive. None of us had been to Vidalia for years but were delighted to see that it holds up and has moved forward with the times.

We have dined at Vidalia twice in the past month, both on Sunday evenings. The staff (Jill, the wonder waitress) is great and friendly; the food is fantastic; the seating can be very intimate in wonderful curved booths, or more formal in tables. A few more visits and it will be our favorite place.

Went with a party of 6 to celebrate a milestone birthday. We were seated very promptly in a room off the main dining room which was nice because it offered a bit of privacy. Our waiter and all of the staff at the restaurant were professional and friendly. Service was always prompt and unobtrusive, a difficult balance to achieve. Food was excellent with no complaints from anyone in our party about the dishes they chose. Standouts were the foie gras and the lamb. We ended up being at the restaurant for about 3 hours; we never felt rushed and we never felt we were waiting too long for anything. All in all, it was a wonderful evening and we'd definitely go back.

My husband and I went to Vidalia for a joint birthday celebration. The atmosphere was very nice - quiet, a romantic sort of subdued. Nice lighting and decor - although part of the reason it's so quiet is because it's underground. The waitstaff is very professional - attentive but not intrusive, and I appreciated that all of them were wearing suits and ties - even the women! I also very much appreciated that they were willing to work with me on avoiding pork - they were able to take out the pork in those dishes where it was a side element or flavor. As for the food - some of what we had was outstanding, some good and unfortunately, some not so good at all. The outstanding elements were all the extras - the mac&cheese and brussels sprouts, the lemon chess pie for dessert (heavenly!), the bread basket (corn bread and focaccia pieces especially!), and the lovely cocktails and wine. The good were the appetizers - shrimp and grits for me (one of their signature dishes, and the shrimp was loaded with yummy butter), and the salad of bibb lettuce, radishes and more for my husband. Unfortunately, the not-so-good included my husband's very expensive NY strip, which he said lacked any real flavor, and my Arctic char dish, where the char was excellent, but the turnips were undercooked, and the sauce didn't add anything at all. All in all, I might stick to this place for lunch, or for a less fancy occasion.

I needed to book a lunch to discuss some business alternatives, and the only place in the Golden Triangle area I felt comfortable doing so was Vidalia. I can always count on their excellent food and professional service - but it was important that the noise level at lunchtime be such that we could have a reasonable conversation. Home run on all fronts. Thank you.

Upscale southern cuisine. Unique crab cake and fried oysters for appetizers. Excellent portion size. 4 types of bread served and the 2nd helping of onion bread arrived quickly. Pork tenderloin on a bed of greens and blackened peas tasted sweet and my wife's shrimp and grits included shrimp with the heads attached. The night was topped off with Peach martinis made to perfection. Will definitely dine at Vidalia again!

Vidalia is by now an institution in Washington. We've been here many times over the years. The food is always fantastic, the ambiance elegant and the decor beautiful. This time I was a little disappointed in the menu offerings, which all seemed kind of odd...and some of the ingredients were unfamiliar. We had a very long wait between the appetizer and the main course. The shared charcuterie was great. My duck breast was very fatty and whatever was under it seemed hard and overcooked. We did have a fantastic waiter whose wine-pouring was impeccable and counsel wise. His quiet, distinguished presence was most appreciated.

Had dinner at Vidalia's on 10/28/2014. What a wonderful meal. Apple Cart was dangerously tasty. Ham's Plate appetizer was an adventure in ham and a great start to the meal. I had the shrimp and grits. The portion was perfect and the flavors made the dish truly memorable. Jill, our server, made some great recommendations for our meal and for our wine selections. The dessert sampler is definitely the way to go, a little taste of a number of things. I will definitely be looking forward to my next visit to DC and my next chance to try more of Vidalia's menu. Keep up the good work, guys!

Chef Hamilton Johnson's dynamic culinary creativity is on full display every week for Vidalia's 3-course lunch. This week features Espelette Chili-Charred Scallop so plump, fresh, and aromatic with smoky pepper and a Skate Wing Schnitzel abundant with pure delicate taste lightly fried to a divinely tender texture. The scallop comes out in the form of a carpaccio with an eye-pleasing deconstructed Bloody Mary accompaniment--the most exciting bivalve we had in ages--while the skate comes with black peppery spaetzle, garlicky roasted grapes, and parsnip puree--easily the best skate wing we ever enjoyed! With a generous, diversely delicious tic-tac-toe board of a Cookie Plate, Vidalia added a festive touch to our celebration lunch!

My husband and I returned after a great initial meal that he had had at Vidalia…once again he was not disappointed, and neither was I. We ordered a variety of offerings from both the regular and chef's special menu via the tasting ordering/price. We enjoyed sensational presentations and appropriately sized portions for the 5 courses: cold appetizer, hot appetizer, fish entree, meat entree, and dessert. All were preceded by the chef's amuse bouche. No complaints in the food department. No complaints in the service department either: our server was attentive and knowledgeable, explaining the menu well and what we received. It was a pricey meal, but definitely high class all round.

My husband and I came for dinner on a Saturday for my birthday, and we had the 5 course/$80 menu, so hard to choose, everything on the menu sounded amazing, but once we finally had everything picked out, and got our wine, the evening flowed very nicely. Jill was an amazing server, very nice and knowledgeable. Not only are the dishes tasty, but they look beautiful too. the plate ups have a lot of thought behind them, and they aren't just putting ingredients onto a huge plate with sauces that mean nothing. Everything about the foie gras plate up is perfection. And the chx fried sweetbreads over waffles and bacon fondue, hands down, the best dish of the night. Loved the birthday petit fours plate. Like the Southern root vegetable for which it was named, Vidalia was a sweet experience on many levels. The food and the service was better than any I have experienced in the Metro Washington area, and while not cheap, did not cost as dearly as some that are better known. The food was done to perfection, with seasoning that was complex and thoughtful, combining the best of Southern traditions and flavors. My duck was full flavored, succulent and tender. My partner believed that her pork tenderloin was the best she had ever had. Service was attentive without being intrusive, helpful without being snobbish. The manager went out of his way to make sure that we were happy. All in all the all dining experience could not have been better.

First, the rye/maple cocktail was delicious and perfect for fall. The sweetbreads on waffles were very good, but the presentation was completely brown and not that appealing. That appetizer was substantial enough to serve as a light dinner. My partner enjoyed his Shady Lane salad. The lamb ribeye was surrounded by delicious dumplings and broth, but the meat itself was rarer than ordered and so tough and sinewy that it was almost inedible. My partner enjoyed his shrimp and grits. Service started out very attentive, but seemed to peter out after 9pm...to the point where we had to ask for more water. Our server disappeared for long stretches throughout the evening.

A BAD start. I tried to enter the glass door; I struggled greatly as door is heavy and I have arthritis issues. 3 'staff' men (not waiters/busboys) in area by hostess were standing there; I know 2 of them watched me as I struggled!! They didn't move! I spoke to manager, one of the 3, about this. Ambiance looks SOOOO dated in every way, almost grim; fake/silk flowers dreadful. (We have dined at Vidalia over many years). Food was very fine with exception of fairly tough steak. Service and demeanor of our server were expert, warm and attentive. I will not return because of problems I mention but do appreciate one of the earlier 'onlookers' standing with the door open for me as we exited.
