A word from Viaggio Ristorante and Lounge
Viaggio in Italian translates to "journey" and this ristorante intends to take their guests on a culinary journey of the regions of Italy, while incorporating the familiarity of American dining. Executive Chef Victor Purdue moved from Vic's on Main to open this new Italian-American casual dining restaurant with “fresh” being the key component to his concept. Purdue is delivering on his promise to bring fresh authentic Italian cuisine to Madison street, a few blocks from the United Center. Inspired by his love for Southern Italian culture and over thirty years of cooking in Italian restaurants, Purdue has very specific requirements for his food and cooking methods at Viaggio. "Using simple, fresh and high quality ingredients are the most important components to the dishes I create," says Purdue. Making everything to order, Purdue concentrates on perfecting each dish. "I change the water for each pasta order. I don’t cut an eggplant until it’s ordered.Continued

  • "Our meal was spectacular. Some of the best Italian food in the city."

  • "We went after my graduation and it was a perfect spot in the West Loop. A few blocks from United Center and far enough away to have a neighborhood atmosphere. Food was DELICIOUS and the staff was WONDERFUL!!"

  • "Friendly staff and excellent, rustic and authentic Italian. From the bread and peppers and oil served as you sit down, to the wine selection, it is like you are in someone's home - just an easy relaxed evening with great food!"

  • "Went to Viaggio before Blackhawks game. Seated promptly then completely ignored until my husband arrived. Ordered quickly then waited and waited and waited, 40 minutes in total. Realized whole room was waiting and game time was nearing. This is a place that specializes in pregame meals! Waiter mostly avoided the situation, finally said he would comp drinks. Food came at the last minute only to have my husband's whitefish badly over cooked! Waiter then "forgot" to comp drinks. Don't know if cook quit or what, mgt was short on reasons, just said it was a rough night!"

  • "We were just there before Game 5 of Hawks playoff game. Was entertaining clients, Had a 5:30 reservation, and immediately put our order in. No app's or food had arrived by 6, nothing at 6:15, told the waiter and he said "any minute". Well 6:40 came and no one in the whole restaurant got any food, and they finally admitted that there was a problem in the kitchen (which I suspected but they denied 30 minutes earlier). My clients and I ended up grabbing a lousy hot dog at the game, so not a strong performance from Viaggio. Very disappointing as I give them tons of business. I need to re-evaluate now. Worst part was they denied the kitchen problem till it was too late - we could have had time to eat somewhere else. "

  • "The food was excellent and our waiter was very as well and he was juggling a number of tables. Left some leftovers at the restaurant to pick up after a show at the United Center only to find the restaurant closed. The only gripe I would have as the food was that good."

  • "Viaggio is a gem in the West Loop! The food is delicious, fresh and authentic. The meatball salad is outstanding as is the eggplant stack appetizer. Entrees are beautifully executed and specials are just that, special and delicious. Service is warm, friendly and most attentive. Great for small and large groups. Viaggio is also kid friendly. We love Viaggio and will be back again, soon."

  • "My wife and I took my parents to Viaggio's for dinner and it was wonderful. We got the meatball salad, eggplant parm, and pork parm. The meatball salad was our favorite. Viaggio's is one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago and has by far the best Italian food in Chicago. The waiter was extremely nice and provided us a lot of good recommendations for dinner. He also was very nice and gave us a Limoncello drink at the conclusion of dinner at no extra cost. My wife and I will definitely be coming back and we have already told a number of our friends of this great restaurant."

  • "Pre Game Dinner - Viaggio still is good, but a small step backwards from prior visits. Service is excellent, but butterfly prok chop was overdone and tough. Other dishes didn't receive the rave reviews from my customers which I had grown uised to hearing in the past."
    Dined on 4/29/2014
  • "Close proximity of other tables caused us to be subjected to everyone else's conversations, while we could barely hear each other. The food was fine as was the service, but I really didn't need to hear the woman next to us discussing her ugly divorce for over an hour...in great detail."

  • "My wife and I lived just a few blocks away from Viaggio for three years and didn't go there until one of our last weekends living in the city. Huge mistake. We should have gone to this place much, much sooner. Now we make a monthly trip into the city to grab dinner here. Top flight food, great atmosphere, and slightly expensive, but still very reasonable considering the quality of food. If you go, do yourself a favor and try the Meatball salad. Unreal!"

  • "Love this place for Chicago-style Italian. We visited twice already and the service is really good, particularly from Matt. Food-wise, what stands out is the freshness of all of their preparations, especially the seafood. Some of the freshest shrimp we have ever eaten. You know how really fresh tasting shrimp, perfectly cooked, has that "snap" when you bite it? Yep...right here in their Linguine Diavalo with Shrimp & Squid. And as the others have said, the meatballs in the meatball salad are probably the best ones in all of Chicago....and we've had them everywhere so I feel comfortable in exclaiming that! Also remarkable was their dessert of apple-raisin bread pudding. Man, what flavor. Hope you enjoy this place as much as we do!!"

  • "Excellent food. This was my fourth trip there and again quality of food and service is very good. Great spot before a Hawks or Bulls game. "
    Dined on 4/15/2014
  • "Excellent food and service, very impressed. Unfortunately the chicken parm (delicious) is probably the most expensive in the city. Single breast at $25? Come on!"

  • "I have been to Viaggio's multiple times and every time I go, the always out do themselves. Hard for me to find anything to change or fix. Best Italian restaurant I have been too!"

  • "Consistently excellent Italian fare is served at this West Madison location. This is the perfect place for business lunch, offering a variety of well priced dishes that were deliciously prepared and excellently presented. The service was attentive and not disruptive to the "over lunch" discussions. I have previously dined there for dinner and was equally pleased."

  • "The service was great, Matt really took care of us. The food was excellent, the meatball salad is a must. It was a quite night, no Blackhawks, Bulls or concert that night."

  • "This was my first visit to the restaurant. The atmosphere was casual, the service was excellent. The waiter was informative, friendly and very engaging. I really liked the menu. The portions were very generous and the appetizers were outstanding."

  • "This place is awesome! The Service is excellent and so is the food! I love the fact that the Chef came out to see how my meal was! Can't go wrong!"

  • "Service is great.. They understand your heading to the United Center and your in and out with great meal.. not much more you can ask for!!"

  • "So close to United center, and great food. Entire staff friendly and helpful"

  • "We took our friends, and we knew that we would like it, but didn't know what they would think. They loved it - as did we. We had enough food to have left-overs, and they were just as good the next day. We needed to be done at a certain time as we had symphony tickets, but there was no problem, even though there was a Bulls game that night. This is definitely a great Italian restaurant."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "I'm always looking for a good place to try before a United Center event, and decided to try Viaggio's. On the plus side, they got us in and out really fast - almost too fast - we were definitely rushed. On the minus side, my red snapper was dry and tough. Good, cold, crisp cesar salad. But, I'm going to take Viaggio's off my list - fast food at the UC would be a better experience."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "Always solid food and service. Perfect for Bulls or Hawks games as they get you your meals quickly as they know you're going to game. Try meatball salad, it's the best in the city."

  • "Viaggio is our go to place before a Hawks or Bulls game. Service is great ---Food is outstanding! They know how to get you out of there before the start of the game. ---- Let's Go Hawks"

  • "Everything was very good, creative and service was attentive. Our waiter was knowledgeable and made good suggestions. The only downside was the salads were served with the entree - and were eaten at the same time. I prefer when the salads are served before the entree."

  • "Went on a Friday night. Busy but not crazy. Our waiter had our table of 2 and two large tables. We were ignored in favor of the bigger tables. Dinner tasted great but bread pudding came out cold and our waiter took 15 min to come to the table and check on us. Would never go back. I do not understand how so many review state great service."

  • "We love the food at this place. Meatball salad is the first thing to order everytime. Special this week - sea bass was tasty, hot, and more than enough per person. Definitely recommend!"

  • "Great place for good old school Italian food. We are always treated great when we dine there. We will be back."

  • "We came into the city for a weekend getaway. Our friends recommended we meet at Viaggio. It was a wonderful night! From the minute we walked in our server took great care of us. He suggested delicious cocktails, appetizers and dinner specials that were all outstanding. His service was tops - funny yet professional. (I wish I could remember his name!) We were there for hours - it was such a warm and inviting place to catch up and linger over the drinks and dessert. I cannot recommend it highly enough!"

  • "I have dined at Viaggio several times now and each time the food and service have been terrific. Do not miss the meatball salad which is a delicious blend of marina sauce, perfectly cooked meatballs (as an Italian, I am picky about my meatballs), leaf lettuce and red onion, oil and vinegar! Perfetto! The pasta is outstanding as well. We had paparadelle and fettucine which were both exquisite..The restaurant can get busy on event nights at the United Center but if you have tickets to an event, it works out well as they do have event parking.. the wine list is fairly extensive..lots of California and Italian wines..I highly recommend Viaggio."

  • "Our second vist, this time before a Bulls game. Great rustic Italian. The rigatoni with Sunday pork gravy is to die for and you won't find it anywhere else. Unbelievable garlic mash potatoes. Will be back."

  • "Live in the neighborhood and am kicking myself for not coming here sooner. The food is fabulous....why go somewhere more trendy when I can walk here. very generous portions of food and wine"

  • "Typically I give Viaggio 5 stars for food. This time I have to knock it down one. That is because we ordered the mussels and a few of them had some sand in them. What make it bad is the first one my wife ate had sand. That may have stayed with her as she ate others. So maybe only one had sand. However, that can happen from time to time. The sauce they were in was great. As was everything else we ate. I had the veal chop milanese. Outstanding. My wife had a special ravioli dish with mushrooms. Also outstanding. Love the peppers served with bread. And we had bread pudding for dessert. Also very good. We wil be back again. The one small glitch in the dinner can happen when ordering mussels. Service was also great, as it always is."
