A word from Viaggio Ristorante and Lounge
Viaggio in Italian translates to "journey" and this ristorante intends to take their guests on a culinary journey of the regions of Italy, while incorporating the familiarity of American dining. Executive Chef Victor Purdue moved from Vic's on Main to open this new Italian-American casual dining restaurant with “fresh” being the key component to his concept. Purdue is delivering on his promise to bring fresh authentic Italian cuisine to Madison street, a few blocks from the United Center. Inspired by his love for Southern Italian culture and over thirty years of cooking in Italian restaurants, Purdue has very specific requirements for his food and cooking methods at Viaggio. "Using simple, fresh and high quality ingredients are the most important components to the dishes I create," says Purdue. Making everything to order, Purdue concentrates on perfecting each dish. "I change the water for each pasta order. I don’t cut an eggplant until it’s ordered.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent food and service, very impressed. Unfortunately the chicken parm (delicious) is probably the most expensive in the city. Single breast at $25? Come on!"

  • "I have been to Viaggio's multiple times and every time I go, the always out do themselves. Hard for me to find anything to change or fix. Best Italian restaurant I have been too!"

  • "Consistently excellent Italian fare is served at this West Madison location. This is the perfect place for business lunch, offering a variety of well priced dishes that were deliciously prepared and excellently presented. The service was attentive and not disruptive to the "over lunch" discussions. I have previously dined there for dinner and was equally pleased."

  • "The service was great, Matt really took care of us. The food was excellent, the meatball salad is a must. It was a quite night, no Blackhawks, Bulls or concert that night."

  • "This was my first visit to the restaurant. The atmosphere was casual, the service was excellent. The waiter was informative, friendly and very engaging. I really liked the menu. The portions were very generous and the appetizers were outstanding."

  • "This place is awesome! The Service is excellent and so is the food! I love the fact that the Chef came out to see how my meal was! Can't go wrong!"

  • "Service is great.. They understand your heading to the United Center and your in and out with great meal.. not much more you can ask for!!"

  • "So close to United center, and great food. Entire staff friendly and helpful"

  • "We took our friends, and we knew that we would like it, but didn't know what they would think. They loved it - as did we. We had enough food to have left-overs, and they were just as good the next day. We needed to be done at a certain time as we had symphony tickets, but there was no problem, even though there was a Bulls game that night. This is definitely a great Italian restaurant."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "I'm always looking for a good place to try before a United Center event, and decided to try Viaggio's. On the plus side, they got us in and out really fast - almost too fast - we were definitely rushed. On the minus side, my red snapper was dry and tough. Good, cold, crisp cesar salad. But, I'm going to take Viaggio's off my list - fast food at the UC would be a better experience."

  • "Always solid food and service. Perfect for Bulls or Hawks games as they get you your meals quickly as they know you're going to game. Try meatball salad, it's the best in the city."

  • "Viaggio is our go to place before a Hawks or Bulls game. Service is great ---Food is outstanding! They know how to get you out of there before the start of the game. ---- Let's Go Hawks"

  • "Everything was very good, creative and service was attentive. Our waiter was knowledgeable and made good suggestions. The only downside was the salads were served with the entree - and were eaten at the same time. I prefer when the salads are served before the entree."

  • "Went on a Friday night. Busy but not crazy. Our waiter had our table of 2 and two large tables. We were ignored in favor of the bigger tables. Dinner tasted great but bread pudding came out cold and our waiter took 15 min to come to the table and check on us. Would never go back. I do not understand how so many review state great service."

  • "We love the food at this place. Meatball salad is the first thing to order everytime. Special this week - sea bass was tasty, hot, and more than enough per person. Definitely recommend!"

  • "We came into the city for a weekend getaway. Our friends recommended we meet at Viaggio. It was a wonderful night! From the minute we walked in our server took great care of us. He suggested delicious cocktails, appetizers and dinner specials that were all outstanding. His service was tops - funny yet professional. (I wish I could remember his name!) We were there for hours - it was such a warm and inviting place to catch up and linger over the drinks and dessert. I cannot recommend it highly enough!"

  • "I have dined at Viaggio several times now and each time the food and service have been terrific. Do not miss the meatball salad which is a delicious blend of marina sauce, perfectly cooked meatballs (as an Italian, I am picky about my meatballs), leaf lettuce and red onion, oil and vinegar! Perfetto! The pasta is outstanding as well. We had paparadelle and fettucine which were both exquisite..The restaurant can get busy on event nights at the United Center but if you have tickets to an event, it works out well as they do have event parking.. the wine list is fairly extensive..lots of California and Italian wines..I highly recommend Viaggio."

  • "Our second vist, this time before a Bulls game. Great rustic Italian. The rigatoni with Sunday pork gravy is to die for and you won't find it anywhere else. Unbelievable garlic mash potatoes. Will be back."

  • "Live in the neighborhood and am kicking myself for not coming here sooner. The food is fabulous....why go somewhere more trendy when I can walk here. very generous portions of food and wine"

  • "Typically I give Viaggio 5 stars for food. This time I have to knock it down one. That is because we ordered the mussels and a few of them had some sand in them. What make it bad is the first one my wife ate had sand. That may have stayed with her as she ate others. So maybe only one had sand. However, that can happen from time to time. The sauce they were in was great. As was everything else we ate. I had the veal chop milanese. Outstanding. My wife had a special ravioli dish with mushrooms. Also outstanding. Love the peppers served with bread. And we had bread pudding for dessert. Also very good. We wil be back again. The one small glitch in the dinner can happen when ordering mussels. Service was also great, as it always is."

  • "I am so happy that we decided to go to Viaggios for Valentines dinner! The service was PERFECT, the wine was FABULOUS,and the food was PHENOMENAL! The staff was just really attentive and really knowledgeable. The seafood medley pasta that I had was LOADED with seafood. No skimping there. I have been dreaming of it since. I would recommend this place to ANYONE looking for an awesome Italian food spot. I just really have absolutely nothing to critique. I cant wait to go back!"

  • "One of our favorite italian dining spots in the city. Anthony took care of all the details for our special occasion and Nico our waiter did the rest. Must get the meatball salad and calamari. Main entree's to get are the linguine and clams, ny strip steak Italiano, and pappardelle with shrimp and broccoli. For desserts you need to try the spumoni bomb, lava cake and tiramisu."

  • "We came in on a Saturday afternoon, after an event at the United Center. Our waiter was Luis and he was very attentive. In fact we had some amazing conversations about food. His years of experience in the kitchen & on the floor with customers gives him an edge over most servers in customer service. We were also able to meet the Chef Jared. He was a really nice guy and we had some great conversations. The service and attention to detail are amazing here. If I had to pick one dish to recommend it would be the sausage and peppers on the appetizer list. It was so good plus it's there own recipe."

  • "Viaggio has been my "Go To" Italian restaurant in the city. So it was an easy call for my birthday with the family. Huge disappointment. Our waiter was absolutely terrible (which is rare here). Our table leaf was broken and never fixed. Food was solid as usual, but everything else about the evening was subpar. Not even a candle in the birthday cannoli! Too bad. I try to eat here every month or so and take customers here regularly. Looks like it might be time to find my next favorite Italian place for client and family get-togethers. Great thing about Open Table is it allows me to vote with my dining dollars, which I do four or five times a week."

  • "My daughter and I met in the city for the day to celebrate her 20th birthday. We both love Italian food and found Viaggio's online. We both completely enjoyed our lunch and the service was fantastic. We completely took our time and never felt rushed. They brought my daughter a delicious piece of tiramisu with a candle. We both agreed we would go back."

  • "Viaggio never disappoints! Food, service and ambience are all excellent. If you are a Bulls or Blackhawks fan, this is THE place to eat before the game."

  • "This was a quiet night as it was ridiculously cold out. It is usually packed. But on a quiet night like this, we really could appreciate how great everything is. From the superb and friendly service, terrific wine, and outstanding food, everything just shines about this small gem on Madison. A spiral which was a simple salad of roasted Brussels sprouts might be the best vegetable dish I have ever had. Addictive. You just can't beat this place for a great Italan meal."

  • "The food was fantastic. The meatball salad is literally to die for. One salad is plenty for 2 people. We went before a Bulls game. The service was quick but not rushed. There were many specials and all 4 of our entrees were outstanding. I would highly recommend this Italian resturant to anyone wanted good food!"

  • "Went on a friends recommendation. I can't wait to take others. The place is small and friendly, not overwhelming. We had reservations and were seated and served immediately. Server was exceptional and there were so many delicious sounding entrees and specials it was difficult to choose. Food was fantastic!"

  • "I planned a surprise for my boyfriend's birthday. The staff made it super easy and made us feel more than accommodated for. The food was AMAZING. Quite possibly the best Italian food I've had in Chicago. This restaurant is truly a hidden gem. If you're looking for a place to dine before a United Center event or anytime, go here!"

  • "Informed host and server we were celebrating a birthday, no acknowledgement made by the restaurant to say happy birthday. Host did not sign us in under Open Table...had to contact Open Table to receive the points. Dissatisfied customer."

  • "Good choice before an event at the United Center. Food was fine - but not memorable - service fine - not memorable. Next time we will eat in the stadium!"

  • "Good prices and good food. The service was a bit off though. We were constantly flagging down our server. Also, he dropped off our appetizer, baked garlic, which required some doing to remove the pods, but he did not instruct how to best do it. Therefore, one person at our table did his best removing the pods and it got quite messy, which made him very frustrated. It was a Bulls game night, but our reservation was after the rush, so I'm not certain why service was so unattentive."

  • "The food at Viaggio never disappoints and New Year's Eve was no exception. We thoroughly enjoyed the very fresh Caprese salad, the crab-crusted Chilean sea bass, and the farfalle and shrimp special. Dessert was also divine - bread pudding and chocolate lava cake with vanilla gelato. We didn't give this experience a full 5 star rating because our server disappeared after a hasty dessert order and never offered us any coffee or additional drinks (which we would have happily ordered!). Though we didn't see him for a long period of time, he had been very knowledgeable and friendly and made sure to thank us on our way out, as did the manager and host and several other servers."

  • "We nicknamed our waiter "flash". He was running around like a maniac. Very seldom asked if we needed anything -we barely would get our words out and he was gone. To be fair, have eaten here on slower nights and it was much better. Stick with the Italian food - the sea bass - which was suppose to be " lightly breaded - had a 1/4 inch of pasty breading - steak was sliced on a bed of gloppy box potatoes. Had the salad and meatballs on a previous visit, and they were great. So if you stick to the red gravy Italian dishes, that's what they do best. Wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again."
